Big Grove Brewery was one of our favorite places to grab a bite and unwind while exploring Des Moines! The atmosphere is upbeat and welcoming, making it a great place to meet up with friends, enjoy a date night, or simply take a break after a day of exploring. The food was great, and they had a lot of beverage options. The food menu is on the smaller side, but they have a good variety. Obviously they have several beer selections, but they also have seltzers, win, liquor, and THC infused sparkling water. We didn't realize the kitchen closed an hour before the actual closing time. We walked in a minute before the kitchen closed and they were really great about making sure we still got to put in a food order. The staff were very welcoming. There are a ton of seating options. They have a decent inside with several little areas that are semi closed which would make this a good place for group functions. The patio outside is pretty big. There is a variety of table sizes, so large parties can be accommodated. They also have several fire pit areas for groups. The inside has 2 large bar seating options. There are plenty of TVs inside and outside in case you are looking for a place to watch sports. read more

Great experience getting a late night dinner here! I'd heard so much about Big Grove and was excited to check it out. AMBIANCE It's a very large space, with great mood lighting all around. There's some more structured dining space on one side with a bar, and more tables and booths in a more spread out casual side. DRINK They have their own beers, but also offer cocktails and mocktails too. I had a great mocktail here and my family enjoyed their beers! FOOD I got a smashburger with a GF bun that was great, and my family enjoyed the fried chicken sandwich and reuben sandwich. We loved the fries too - very crispy! Great ranch. SERVICE Service was efficient and kind but didn't linger - looked like she was working with some understaffing surrounding the holidays. A small group decided to go to Big Grove for dinner and were seated inside. We loved the indoor/outdoor feel, with a variety of ambient lights, real plants, and baseball field-feel of the bar. We ordered the big pretzel as an appetizer and loved the stone ground mustard. The cheese was a bit runny and not super flavorful. I appreciated the wait staff allows you to try some of their beers before ordering, as they brew everything themselves. Out of what we tried, the Summer Jam was the favorite. Everyone's meal was 5/5 stars, we had the Tuna Poke Bowl, strawberry feta salad, and chicken fried BBQ Mac & Cheese were bursting with flavors and delicious in their own right. I was particularly impressed by the chicken, the breading was thin and crispy, and the meat was perfectly tender. We will certainly make a point to be back next time we are in town! read more

My favorite part of this place was the vibe inside. It's huge with a large outdoor patio too. The vibe was just so cute! I got a cocktail (can't remember the name!) that was a spiked raspberry iced tea which was really yummy. I ordered the Cubano, per our server's recommendation, and it was alright. Not my favorite cuban i've ever had. Honestly I enjoyed the fries more than the sandwich. My friend got the mac and cheese and we both liked that more than the Cubano. I would be back, but probably wouldn't order the Cubano again, a bit of a let down. read more

We had a late lunch before a show at Hoyt Sherman Theater. Outside they have a huge deck, fire pit and domes for cold weather. Sitting up on a hill, the views are great. Inside the room is also huge. There is a big bar and dining room off to the side. It felt cozy because of the greenery and various seating options. Our food and cocktails were fantastic. Such a fun spot! They have a huge space here both indoors and outdoors and it's always active. Especially a great spot to watch some games, they were showing an NBA game on a big screen while we were here. I also love their patio set up in the summer! The staff at Big Grove is always friendly, place is clean. You can tell they have fun and like their job. There is always something different on the menu. We ordered the caesar salad and chicken wings. The salad had a great kimchi and caper like condiment that was fantastic. Highly recommend trying the different brews in a flight. We went on a Friday night and even with a lot of parties and private events, we had a great space at the bar. We've taken our dog and we sat outside. She loved what we ordered for her. I'm really impressed! This was my first brewery in Des Moines and recommended to me by a friend. First, the ambiance is absolutely awesome. There's a ton of natural lighting indoor and the outdoor seating is also wonderful - you do not feel trapped at all. The food and drink are good as well. I went with a 7 oz citrus surfer lime and a summer jam sour for my drinks and the special of the day - Yakitori - for my food. We had been here for a group event and had a great time, so we came back in with another couple to have lunch on a pretty busy Saturday. There is ample parking in back, and street parking in the neighborhood, but it can be a bit hectic with cars coming in and out. We got seated right away and of course for drinks they highlight their beverages, but there are also some other cocktail options, albeit a bit limited, which is not uncommon for a brewpub. They are glad to bring samples to help you decide what you want. The food was all great! Two in our group got the chicken sandwich, a thick piece of meat with light breading and a side of fries. Both who had it really enjoyed it. i got a special of the day BBQ burger, that was only $8....but you do have to pay for a side if you want one. My wife got the Taphouse Burger and said it was very good as well! Their bread and butter pickles are killer! Service was excellent, and they do add a 3% service charge, presumably for the credit card. You pay at the table via handheld machine. This spot had some of the best fried chicken and fried cauliflower in the metro! I am obsessed with their fried chicken sandwich, sauced up with the Korean bbq. You can pick other sauces but the Korean bbq is my recommendation! It has a little kick if you're looking for something with some spice! The service is friendly and the space is very pretty indoors! They also have a big patio - it's definitely a large patio. I think this is a great spot for large groups. Even their booths are huge! I'm a non-drinker with an admittedly limited tolerance for brewery culture. That being said, I was really impressed with the food and vibe at Big Grove. The taproom burger was top-notch. The service was decent and seating was comfortable, and the ambience is cool. Parking is a nightmare - the lot is always full no matter what time of day or night. What an outstanding place to eat, gather, drink and chill. It was packed, but it was a Friday night, so that is to be somewhat expected. We made a reservation (recommended). The beer is fantastic (and we are kinda beer snobs, brew beer), fresh and made in house. All of the recipes and sauces are made from scratch as well. We ordered the butchers board to start and then shared the BBQ Korean wings and Mac and cheese.. kept that theme and shared; it was perfect. Service was outstanding and we will be back! read more

This is the pace to be in every season!!! Came here for light food and appetizers. Sat outside by the fire pit on a Friday night after a 5K Pumpkin Run. Tons of people out here but lots of places to sit. Ordered the cauliflower wings and by party all ordered burgers. Excellent food and perfectly portioned. This was my third time here so I noticed there is still not much to eat for dairy free/egg free but at least there were a couple things to pick from or to customize. Definitely not much for vegan options. Beer selection is great but we're were here for the food and company. Nicely located off of Ingersoll. Beautiful building that is eye catching from the street. We sat at some high tables near the bar and it was easy to order and food came out pretty fast. Service was good. I got the French dip sandwich which was good. This review is for 3.5 stars. My husband and I went here for dinner last night with another couple. This was our third time here. The first time we came they seated us outside at a tiny table right next to the building. It wasn't very scenic and there wasn't much to look at but the sidewalk. I can't remember what we ordered but neither of us was wowed by what we ate. We were expecting a little better. We didn't expect to come back any time soon The second time we came it was for a Yelp event and the food and drinks were wonderful, but they were also free. We were impressed and decided to give them another chance and come back another time. Last night we were able to get a seat right away, so we were happy about that. I ordered a White Cheddar Cheesesteak, my husband got the Taphouse Burger, our friends got the Tuna Poke Bowl and the Jerk Chicken Sandwich. We thought all the the food was pretty good but not great enough to warrant the high prices that they charged for each of them. I liked my cheesesteak sandwich but I've had better ones at other places for much less money. I will say the portions are pretty big and I left feeling full. Their fries are also awesome. They were very crispy and crunchy with a good texture. My husband remarked that Big Grove is really a brewery that is serving food to get people to come and eat there so they can sell their beers. I have to agree. I feel like the food is just a little above average. What you're really paying for is the ambience. The place is beautiful and the decor is really nice to look at. They did a great job with the look and feel of the place and it has a fun energy. They have an eye-catching logo and cool logoed merchandise to buy. The place is really big and has a lot of seating for dining inside and outside that it makes you think the emphasis is on the food but it really isn't. One thing that we all noticed was that the water tasted terrible. It had a metallic taste like it was tap water and wasn't filtered. For what they're charging for the food they could at least filter the water. The service was pretty good but we had a bit of a wait for our food. The waitress said the kitchen was backed up. There was also a wedding reception going on in the back room, so that could have contributed to it. Our waitress didn't come check to see if we need our water glasses refilled until we were almost done with our meal. The one thing none of us cared for was that when we got our bills the waitress didn't give us a paper itemized receipt. She put an electronic device in front of us that had our total on it along with three recommendations for tip percentages starting at 20% and going higher from there. What happened to starting with 15%? And I don't know if the tip would be calculated on the subtotal or total. I much prefer a paper receipt so I can check to see if we were charged for what we actually ordered and if there were any mistakes on the receipt. She was going to charge us a service fee before she saw that we were paying with cash and then she took the fee off. I don't see a need for me to come back again but my husband really liked the Citrus Surfer and some of their other beers and he said he might come back just for drinks and not the food. read more

Plenty of TVs to catch your favorite game. The beer selection will surely offer something for everyone, and they also have cocktails available. We were at Big Grove for a Yelp Event last night and decided to hang out a bit longer and give the take out version their offering to see how well the foods traveled home to Ankeny and we were not disappointed. We snagged the Brussels, sweet potato fries, Mac and cheese, Korean wings, and tuna poke. First is the fact that they use nice sized containers food was not stuffed into a container in an unappealing way. It looked fabulous. The portion sizes were excellent and the containers were environmentally friendly. The food was still warm when we got back to Ankeny. And like anyone that goes we had to snag a nice four pack of their fabulous beverages to take home. Make sure you give this hot spot a shot. read more

I attended our 2023 Yelpie awards at Big Grove last night! The last time I was in this building was to look at a Corvette that was sitting in the showroom (fka Crescent Chevrolet). That was in the early to mid-90s. I was living at 17th and Pleasant in Sherman Hill and working for Younkers Downtown (my first job after getting out of the US Navy and moving to the Des Moines metro...). I was selling china, crystal, and silver in the Metro. Making a couple bucks above minimum wage and driving a 1982 Ford Granada station wagon. Needless to say I couldn't afford the Corvette and just waved off the salesman who tried to approach me. No sense in wasting his time... Lol A couple of years after that I moved to the Western suburbs and don't get downtown often. I'm just not a downtown guy. I hate the traffic...trying to figure out parking, etc. That being said I was very happy when I found the large free parking lot and available free street parking just to the North of Big Grove. I was greeted immediately upon arrival and a host showed me back to the private room where our event was being held in the Crescent room. The event itself... Stellar! Big Grove was a wonderful host. Being an event our menu differed a little from the normal offerings, but most were small plates or variations on their normal menu items. We were served gyro kebabs, bao buns with what I assume was a Korean fried chicken, poke bowl bites, and a dessert pretzel (sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar with a drizzle of frosting). All the food served was all really good! I tried a couple of the sours. Double Blackberry and Fruitfully Just. As far as a casual drink the Double Blackberry would be my go to out of the two, but the Fruitfully Just paired fabulously with the gyro kebabs. Yeah...I know when you think pairing it's normally a wine thing, but it can really apply to any beverage food combination where one accentuates the taste of the other. The Big Grove staff filled us in on their history as far as where they started and where they are now, their other locations (Solon, Iowa City, and Cedar Rapids), and their brewing as well as their partnerships and retail opportunities. They offered tours to those wanting to see the on site brewing facilities as well. Once again a big shout out to Taylor and the Big Grove team! Now that I've ventured out to Big Grove I can definitely see myself stopping by both Big Grove and the adjacent Homegrown again in the future! read more
