Since it was Happy Hour pricing (app. 1/3 off the items we checked), the Value bumps to a 5* for this trip. All things considered, I like Barn Town Brewing and really like a few of their beers - not to mention, they are close to home. Because we were here for a Happy Hour review, we ordered only from their Happy Hour menu (all of which have pictures included below). My wife started with an amber Core beer, while I chose the Featured Flight - since it included several of their beers that I hadn't yet sampled. For our meal, we ordered the Bavarian Pretzels (see picture), Crab Rangoon Flatbread (see picture) and Wings, split between Buffalo & Honey Hot (see picture). The Pretzels are just what you would expect and the combination of mustard and cheese dipping sauces were a great complement. The wings were also tasty, although several admittedly appeared to come from a pretty deformed chicken. The flatbread would be the only thing I wouldn't order again. I expect very thin to cracker type crusts for flatbread and this was more of a thick / deep dish pizza type of crust (the picture shows it, about 1/2" thick). Good service and creative beers, especially in the sour and sugary spectrum. The unfortunate part is that some of those beers are TOO sugary that it doesn't taste/feel like beer anymore. I had experienced Barn Town at a beer festival and researched them before visiting town, so I know the experimental candy-influenced collabs are kind of their thing. The PB and Grape Jelly sour was nice and the Watermelon Sour Batch Buddies was the best of the State Fair themed bunch. Everything else packed too much of a flavor punch for me... to the point of upsetting my stomach which NEVER happens when I drink beer. I would actually go back and try some of their flagship (normal) beer offerings and food specials to get a more well rounded opinion of the brewpub. read more

I stopped in during a recent road trip and I wish I would've had more time to spend here. The interior is pretty big and has table and bar seating. Everything was clean and service was friendly. They have lots of cool merchandise and several to-go beers. They do serve food but I didn't try any. I only had a beer because I wasn't at my final destination but they have a pretty wide variety with lots of different styles. I went with one of their flagship beers-the Neon Hazy IPA. I really enjoyed it and even got some to go so that I could enjoy back in KC. Next time I'm passing through, I'm definitely going to stop and hopefully plan a little better so that I can try more beer and food. read more

We've ate here a total of 5 times since June 2025. My husband has tried the burrito challenge and the cheese was so burnt over the top of it and the potatos that it basically killed the flavor. We thought we would try again another day. My sandwich was now bad and burnt (crab Rangoon chicken) but my husbands sandwich was fine but that time our waitress took our flatbread off the table and there was still half of it left?????? Wtf...... Well we tried again... because 3rd time is a charm.... Now my husband had the Maytag burger and it was smothered for some reason in the blue cheese and completely killed the sandwich and gave my husband the shits....... Unfortunately my mother wanted to give it a try so she took my husband and child and I stayed home. Well my husband tried another sandwich the Brisket sando which he asked without the banana peppers. Well he got it with the banana peppers and could barely choke it down because the waitress wasn't willing to do anything.. place was "too busy" with the 4 tables filled. Now tonight I don't know why we came back but for some reason I wanted to give it one last shot with the food. Shouldn't have. Should have stayed home like my husband asked and grilled out..... the Vampire Killer Burger was not it. My fiancée stopped in here on a Tuesday night and it was decently busy, but we were seated right away. I am a big fan our sours, so I loved getting a flight and trying several of their options. I was a little disappointed because they were out of two that I was really excited to try, but that must just mean they are really good. For an appetizer, my fiancée loves the chips and dip. I was skeptical because how good could they be, but the chips were fresh and the dips were very yummy and unique. We both ordered burgers and loved them. I don't think of this being a burger place, but if you go, I would highly recommend a burger. They all looked so good, and I don't think you could go wrong. I also had a side of mac and cheese that I would order again as an entrée. Restaurant mac and cheese is usually pretty average, but this was so yummy. We came to watch the game during brunch but the food was not good... I think other reviews are pretty misleading. Did we get them at a bad time? Maybe.. The burrito was small and cold, mimosas were mainly syrup, and the skillet had no flavor. I do not recommend this place for brunch. The starters and lunch looks okay, but portions are small considering the price. The wait staff is incredibly nice, and service is good. BTB is such a high energy place to go! It's fun to meet up with family or friends. They keep it clean despite being busy. Servers are always great and I've never had a mixup with my order. The fries here aren't the best but their burgers are definitely top tier. You also can't go wrong with a flight of brews! I personally love the sours and it's fun to be able to taste their new seasonal flavors. Lots of unique and random combinations that are quite delicious! Enjoy everytime we go here. We've had so many different items. Including Brussels Sprouts. Definitely enjoy trying their varieties of beer as well as seasonal items. The service is always very friendly & efficient. I do wish it wasn't so loud there, if it's busy you can not even hear your table. They need some buffers. But that's just a minor thing tons of businesses have. Restrooms are always clean. Breakfast is always a delicious choice. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Menu is varied and fun, even while it's limited in some ways to specials on certain days. Drinks are ridiculously fun, especially the GF sours. DELISH. I have multiple food allergies and I've never had issues. We are here on a fairly regular basis and we love it! Only reason I can't do 5 stars is I'd love to see better GF indicators on the menu, and I really, really want to have a GF mac and cheese option. We enjoyed Barn Town recently. We enjoyed ourselves, although there were some blips. We arrived around 6:00, and were told it would be about a 20 minute wait. They were pretty spot on. Tip: We waited in our car and had a nice conversation. They text you. This was perfect, because the table next to us was LOUD. Clearly, they enjoyed the beer.... I had the roast beef flatbread. It had a lot of flavor, but I wish the horseradish was more prominent. That would have given the dish a nice extra kick. My wife enjoyed a burger. She thought it was cooked well, and she enjoyed the flavor of the bacon jam. She thought the whole burger was well-balanced and worth the money. Our server was simply awesome. He was knowledgeable, funny, and "on" all night. I can't believe I've forgotten his name because he has a really funny story about it. A good experience. Just, the place is loud. Today's experience was definitely better than my first visit. I tried the Bacon and Brie Burger and LOVED it!!!! The combination accentuated by the balsamic reduction and the pretzel bun was impressive. Service was so good on this visit. My only negative remark is how cold the interior is during the winter. I've had their beers at a few places around town (mainly The Hall), so I thought I'd stop back in and give them another chance. I'm glad I've gone back in, because every experience has been better than my initial visit... The sours are amazing! On Sunday, I had the HawaiIowan Punch and the Peach Pie Drips. The punch tasted just like the stuff your mom used to serve your after-school friends. You couldn't taste the alcohol, which is both good and bad. With all the praise I'm heaping on this particular beer it was outshined by the Peach Pie Drips. This beer had the perfect balance of graham cracker, vanilla, cinnamon, and peach flavor. I bought a 4-pack of it to take home with me. I gave one to a friend (begrudgingly) because he drove on a business trip. He was equally impressed. I'm sad that apparently I had the last beer out of the keg. I hope they just meant they needed to brew more--and not that its disappearing. Incredibly amazing sours, we come for the flights and stay for the seasonal burgers and desserts!!! Eagerly awaiting their s'mores desserts return. They're always staying up to date with trends rn as they have Dubai chocolate treats rn as I post! The service has been AMAZING. Everytime we've been here, they're incredibly patient, answer all the questions for on draft beers and the service is speedy to have food arriving at our tables. All of the food comes out hot and amazing and you'll for certain have food to take home!! A must whenever I am in or even near Des Moines. This has been my go to brewery in this city for years and for good reasons. They have solid core beers and a huge selection of rotating brews that have playful touches. As a huge connoisseur of PB&Js, I have to admit that their recent line of PB&J sours were wonderful. We love the variety of beer on tap. Always up for a great stout. Currently they have their cicada killer on tap. They also have the one with adjunct. This time around it had hazelnut, coffee and chocolate. Talk about flavor. I got the one with adjuncts and my companion got the regular one. It did need a few minutes to open up once I got mine. It was delicious. Right now they have "pre-picked" flights. One was iPad and one was "fair selection" of sours. You can still also create your own flight. I've heard lots of talk about barntown and I finally got the chance to eat here. I ordered the braised brisket sando with sweet potatoes and ranch. The portions are big here so I definitely had leftovers. The service here is also friendly. The restaurant is in an open space so you can hear a lot of conversations wherever you're sitting or standing. Location: this is in a strip mall looking area. There aren't any stores though, just restaurants from what I can tell. And the parking lot is usually packed. When I entered we did have a wait. If you're a drinker you're more than open to purchase one of their speciality drinks or beers at the bar. I think we waited maybe 20-ish minutes for a table for 2 people. I hadn't been to Barn Town in a while, but a old co-worker and I decided to get together a few nights ago and Barn Town is near where he lives in Waukee. We arrived at about 400 PM. The menu had completely changed since the last time I'd sat at one of their tables. I ordered the bulgogi cheesesteak with over roasted brussel sprouts and an iced tea, My friend ordered the crab rangoon flatbread and an iced tea. Service was great! We got seated right away, our drinks came fast and were refilled regularly. Our server checked on us throughout the meal. The food hit the table after a relatively short wait. I had questioned to myself if a comfort food centric place like Barn Town should be serving a Korean fusion dish like a bulgogi beef cheesesteak with kimchi... Isn't that a little outside of their wheelhouse? Maybe... Was it absolutely delicous? YES! It was. One of the better sandwiches I've had recently in the metro. The patio is much quieter than the inside. Nicely shaded too but still hot with the weather we had. Glad we chose the patio though as it was a better place for conversation. Staff were very busy but maintained great hospitality and attention. This is probably the best wedge salad I've ever had. Loved the fixings! They told us it would be a half hour wait and that was about how long it was before we got a table. I ordered the Bulgogi cheesesteak sandwich with fries and my husband got the pastrami sandwich with fries. I liked my sandwich a lot and the kimchi in it was pretty good. My husband didn't care for his sandwich and thought the slaw didn't add much flavor to the sandwich. I tasted his sandwich and agree that it wasn't the best. The pastrami had a lot of fat on it and had a flavor that tasted kind of funny to me. The fries weren't very crispy but tasted ok. The food came out pretty quickly and we were pleased about that. The noise level is very loud in the restaurant. It's your typical bar type of setting with TVs around the room and loud music playing. There were some smaller tables and some larger tables that people just shared. It was very lively and very busy. They don't have printed menus and you need to scan the QR code on the table to see the menu. When we got our bill they overcharged us $.50 for my sandwich but we didn't tell the waitress because we didn't want to argue over $.50. My food was decent but not outstanding. Solid menu of interesting burger options. I was in town for work and someone mentioned a cinnamon roll with chili, so when I saw a Pork belly cinnamon roll burger with chili on the menu, I had to try it! I have to say though, I was disappointed that it was a pork belly roll done like a cinnamon roll and there was no delicious dough with icing. Otherwise it was very good and paired well with the brussel sprouts and a flight. Very fast and friendly service, and I appreciated that you can order one burger patty instead of two. We telephoned ahead for a 5PM reservation for nine people on Monday, June 8, 2026. The table was crammed into the SE right angle corner of the dining room with the overhead door contraption @ the east end. Our seating was configured with a bench row of seating and then only four chairs across from that. We moved the table about 10 inches to give one guest some elbow room of the corner & to allow 5 guests to be seated on the bench and around the corner at the other end of the table. Three more small two tops were positioned in a row along the same bench as ours. Before our food arrived but after we had our drinks and appetizers, the self-appointed "house captain" was selected to approach our table and ask us to move the table back into the corner so the neighboring three two-top tables could be used to seat guests. About 1/2 way through finishing our meal, the center of those Two top tables was put into use. If accommodating a table of 9 guests to the tune of nearly $300.00 isn't important to your bottom line, I suggest you take a stern thrashing to the waiter involved. Or perhaps someone on staff is in need of a craniotorectal inversion procedure to be performed. Our waitress was very pleasant and served us in a respectable manner. The environment is very very loud~ it wasn't even half full and I couldn't hear my partner across the table from me. It was our first time coming here and I really don't think we will be back. The drinks were tasty (strawberry moscato punch and a pbj beer) and the service was okay. I ordered the skillet mac and cheese and it was honestly kind of gross. It was very bland and mostly tasted like milk with a strange herbal aftertaste (no amount of salt or pepper could save it). The Neon hazy IPA at 6.5% is probably my favorite beer, although the barrel aged cicada killer at 13.1% is solid if you can handle it. This place is crazy popular. Friends meeting up on a Friday evening. 20 minute wait. They have igloos out front you can rent. We weren't there for that. Had to try and stay out of the way as the place is packed and not really good for room for waiting when it's cold outside. Got seated in about the right time frame. Waitress was on it. Got the cheeseball and crab ragoon bread for appetizer. My girlfriend loves the cheese balls and I love the dipping sauce they come with. Tonight's food choice was suggested by the waitress. This was my fiancé's and I's first time coming to barn town. At first I was pretty excited after seeing the vibe of the restaurant, it gave a pretty classic small town bar and grill with the half truck body behind the bar and road/beer signs all over the walls. We both ordered drinks, I got the PB&Blackberry IPA which was good and my fiancé got the strawberry moscato punch which they also thought was good. But that's where the good stopped. I got the bbq burger and my fiancé got the Mac and cheese. My burger was certainly a burger but that's it, there was not a lot of flavor and it was very bland. There was maybe 2 dollops of bbq sauce on it in total and the most flavorful part was the thick cut bacon. For almost 17$ Then my fiancé's mac and cheese... bland is an understatement, it tasted like it was just noodles in cream. No cheese, no salt, no pepper, no flavor. We aren't from Iowa so we've gotten acquainted to bringing our own chili flake to places we go out to but even a little bit of pep could not save that pasta. Lastly the service. I was a bit confused by it, we were served by at least 2 different servers throughout our lunch. But aside from that, the service was great. Both servers were nice. They were attentive for the most part and we had check ins every 10 mins or so. All in all I'd stop in for an appetizer and a drink but not much more than that read more
