A couple friends and I decided to try this little place out. It's located amidst a couple other places in a small strip "mall" type area. The outside was pretty cool with their signage and decor. Once inside, it was bigger than it appeared from outside. There were several tables both low and high top with lots of room to move. Many were playing card and board games while enjoying a beer. It was close to the end of the night on a Friday and they had a guy walking around with some pizza for sale right on site. Good deal! We tried 4 different beers and they were all pretty dang tasty. My personal favorite was the Greenbelt Trail Mile #4 (Hazy IPA). It had a lot of flavor and perfect for a hazy. I'd definitely visit 515 Brewing again when I'm in the neighborhood for a tasty beverage! read more

I really enjoy and try to patronize small local brewpubs. I live 2 blocks from 515 and so badly wanted it to be my local beer hangout. I've given up. First gripe: they have on tap tonight literally 8 different IPAs. 8! But not one single lager or pilsener. Their brewmaster is too busy trying to come up with the next triple hopped asparagus chocolate IPA. Can they make just one easy drinking beer? Next gripe: 25 -30 people here. A one hole bathroom for men. 4 guys in line at any time. Last gripe: one lady working the counter. 515 brewing is a welcome oasis of fun and refreshment on the Greenbelt bike trail. They always have a great selection of fresh, local beers. The best part is it's just a few steps off of the bike trail or just off University Ave in Clive. I was really surprised to fine a comfortable patio, plus lots of couches and other comfy seating. I was expecting the typical restaurant style seating, but this was a nice change. So is the huge selection of board games provided by the company "Dealt Hand". There must be 50 different board games here, many are kid friendly. I recommend 515 to anyone looking for a fun afternoon or evening out with friends and family alike - especially if you like to hit the bike trail. read more

I had always wanted to stop here but for some reason I hadn't? That was a mistake. 515 is great place for a beer right on the bike trail on the edge of Windsor Heights. Upon walking in the large board of beers was a little overwhelming to me.....however the gal working there quickly asked if she could help me. We came here for beer and got an exciting sports experience as well! Now to the beer! 515 Brewing Company is exactly what the name says! It's all local all the time! They have 6 of their own beers on tap at any given moment. Then the thing that surprised me, was they fill the extra taps with other local craft beers from around the area! HOW COOL IS THAT! That a local brewery would share it tap space with competitors! SHOWING THE LOCAL LOVE IS what CRAFT BEER is all about! 515 Brewery has a wide range of styles from the Lil Tart (which zings your mouth with flavor) to the OJ IPA which has a nice hoppy bite! The Stout they make is a very high alcohal brew that is perfectly dark and smooth! I suggest getting a Flight to try all the beers the first time you are here! As for the brewery environment! It's nice and open with big screen projector playing the games! The brew master was even out doing some test on things so I went over and asked a few questions! I am not one to hype a place on my own, but I have told all my friends and co-workers in the Des Moines area about this place ever since I went for the first time a few days ago. I've since been back twice, and I've been met with the same 5-star level of service. The OJ IPA and Hopititus C are great beers. To be honest, the only beer I've tried that I didn't absolutely love was the sour but I'm not a huge fan of those anywhere. I think even non-beer drinkers can have a good time; they have a pretty good cider on tap and Peace Tree root beer as well. My favorite part about this spot is how comfortable it is. From the owners' pictures on the wall to the mustache shaped light and wood everywhere, concrete floors, and leather couches, this is the bar you come to just hang out and have a great time. It doesn't try to pretend it's more than it is; it's a great find with great beers. I highly recommend going and doing a beer flight. read more

Beer: IPA's, Stouts, Porters, Saisons, Pale ales, Lagers, Belgians....with some seasonals mixed in. My favorite seasonal is the Basil Protocol saison, and core beer would have to the Passe` pale ale. Taproom: Great set up with low top and high top tables, and some comfy couches and chairs. They have a small patio if one wants to get some fresh air! I love the vibe. Everyone is happy to be there! Customer Service: Best in the city. All of the beertenders are friendly and happy to chat about the beers or anything in general. Joe, Matt, and Whitney are top notch! I have some mixed feelings about this place but leaning to the top end of the scale here. I want to love their full selections of beer but honestly, the beer isn't totally my style. I like a strong, hoppy, tart, or terribly unique beer. Their beers are good and some venture on unique, but I'm just not completely wowed. I'm ok with that because beer places that are small like this should be experimental to a degree and see what fan favorites emerge. I don't represent the usual client, likely, so I respect what they're producing. It just isn't totally for me. But I haven't had an opportunity to try all the beers they offer throughout a given year and I will definitely be back. The staff is excellent and they have a pride in their beers. I'd heard so many great things about 515 that when the little lady and I decided to do a craft brew tour on our bikes this stop was a no brainier. It was right on our path home. We weren't really greeted very well, but it was 6 on a Saturday afternoon and who knows how many people passed thru on a Saturday afternoon. Her knowledge on 515 beers was unremarkable especially after her nonexistent greeting. Even seemed irritated that I would ask questions about their beers. I order a DSM Pils being a fan of Pilsner on hot days I hoped this would be a great start. Nope, the beer fell a little flat. Not in anyway reminding me of the Pilsners I've drank in the past, German or American. The wife ordered the Mexican Spring, while she drank hers slowly I finished mine and went back inside to order a Wired Heifer. This beer was ok, but not what I was looking for on a hot afternoon. The wife refuse to finish hers, I didn't try it, probably should have I might have like this selection. Have I taken them off my radar, no. I'll stop back in on a bike ride and try another couple in the future and keep you updated. After my initial visit however I won't be expecting much. read more

I like beer...Actually I really like beer...Let me say this again, I LOVE BEER! This is why I like, I mean, I love 515 Brewing Co. They make a lot of different styles, kinds and variations of beers that all seem to make me happy. On our latest outing to their small but welcoming tap house they had 8 of their own brews on tap (the most I have seen since they opened last year). Here is my report in full beer lover form: We ordered a sampler of all 8 beers they had on tap. First we started with one of their newest offering the Cooter Ray IPA. This IPA poured golden to amber in color and had distinct citrus-grapefruit aroma. The grapefruit was present from start to finish and well into the aftertaste. Good beer and I could drink this one all night. Next on the board was the OJ IPA. So this has been the beer that has eluded me all year. Every time we stopped in to 515, they had either just ran out of this beer or it was going to be available in a couple days. This was worth the wait! Beautiful IPA with lots of citrus flavors and smells. It finished clean with no aftertastes and left you wanting more. This is their second best IPA offering. Third we sampled the Mexican Spring, an American wheat beer with agave and lime. This was my wife's favorite beer of the afternoon. Nicely done wheat beer base with just slight hints of agave and lime. A very refreshing beer that I could drink on a hot day at the beach. Up next is the D.A.R.T. Dodger IPA which is a full assault of west coast hops and in my opinion is the best IPA that 515 makes. The color is amber and the aroma is all centennial hops. The taste is citrus and dank with a little biscuit malt. Finishes smooth to round out this high quality beer. Halfway through our beer journey, but ends they IPA portion with Hopititis-C. Compared to the other IPAs we have had this one was a little lacking in flavor. Good presence of bitter flavor yet smooth mouthfeel. The finish left a slight aftertaste and slowed me from taking another quick drink. To start the second half of our 8 beer flight we have the Belgian Mistress. This Belgian tripel was awesome! maybe it is because it is so different from the IPAs we started with but the Belgian funky yeast that left a slight banana ester matched with this subtle sweet base was great. Next we sampled the Castaway Porter which was a coconut porter by their definition. I, on the other hand, thought it was a good porter but completely missed the coconut. I smelled, tasted and repeated numerous times searching for the coconut and never really found it. Other than that it has nice coffee flavor with a deep dark brown color. Lastly we tried their Vanilla Stout dubbed Sweater Weather. I really enjoyed this brew, lots of chocolate, vanilla and coffee flavors in a easy drinking stout. When winter (or sweater weather) rolls back around I will put this in heavy rotation in the beer fridge. I would recommend 515 Brewing Co to anyone looking for some great local brews! Checked them out about a week ago, and I can't wait to go back! Finding their storefront was a little tricky, especially if you're not too familiar with this particular stretch of University Ave (like me). Their beers are not your average microbrews. I'll admit, my standards are usually pretty low when tasting beer from a new microbrewery. But I was truly blown away! The beers were packed with flavor and weren't weak at all. Seating is plentiful, but they filled up very quickly with the after 5 work crowd. I also really enjoyed the high male to female ratio. Great beers brewed in very small batches! I've been here a handful of times now and I must say I haven't been let down at all. First off, much like Confluence Brewery this place is just for the beers. This isn't like Exile, or CABCo, and such where they serve food. So if you're looking for a brewery and kitchen this isn't it. Unlike Confluence however they don't brew to distribute, so you won't see a large kegging operation here. This is a large room inside an older commercial building that was made for beer drinking and socializing and sometimes they have sporting events on the projector from time to time. The beer is what takes center stage however. Because they brew in smaller batches they can brew more variety of beer more often. It's not unusual to see taps here change weekly. I would tell you what is good here but I can't because the beers I drank probably aren't in the rotation. And that's what makes this place interesting. Some breweries in town and very stagnant when it comes to beer varieties and that's not really a bad thing but sometimes it gets a little boring. Full 5 starts for our experience at 515! It started with a friendly and welcome greeting from the staff behind the bar. They had 7 of their beers on tap with a few other guest taps. We wanted a flight of 8 and the bartender gave us a great suggestion of which non-515 taster to go with. I liked the system; order at the bar when you walk in and then choose a table or couch in their spacious tap room to enjoy! There was a small pool table and a couple TVs as well. Each table had a flip book of sorts with a write up on all their beers. There were a couple they were out of or that we had that wasn't added to this yet, but I loved the concept either way. The beer: DELICIOUS! This place definitely ranks with our list of favorite craft beer. They were out of Hopititis C, which we hear is great. We are hoplovers, so that was a bummer but we weren't disappointed by any means. The OJ IPA was our avorite, but all the beers were delicious. They don't serve food but you can bring your own in or have it delivered. Many staff and brewers made frequent trips around the tap room to pick up glasses and chat with some. We had the opportunity to meet a few of the staff, including a couple brewers. They were really friendly and gave us a couple extra samples. It was fun to talk craft beer and brewing in our home state and share stories and information about all the breweries we visit in Colorado. Overall this was everything we look for in a brewery. Most importantly- tasty and unique craft beer, a great atmosphere, and friendly staff that cares about their product and keeping the customers happy! We've been tagging their stickers at the breweries in Colorado and can't wait to visit our next trip to Des Moines! read more

Open and laid back atmosphere in a newer building. When I saw some reviews about different beers I was skeptical but now that I'm here I'm impressed. Having the coffee stout, agave lime wheat, OJ IPA, and another IPA named Hopititus C. All excellent - the OJ IPA and coffee stout really stand out as winners. They do 4oz tasters for 2 dollars each. They also have guest beers on tap, but only from Iowa.. a cool concept. Gives you a chance to experience some other breweries from Iowa if you only have the chance to visit Des Moines.. For me.. it would be hard to drink anything but their beers. They were awesome. Don't bring your growler in here.. they don't fill em and they dont sell em. The beer meister said they don't make big enough batches to fill growlers for people. He said that 515 plans on expanding by the end of summer so maybe this advice will become outdated someday. Within that expansion they plan to open up a new patio outside. There was soccer playing on a large projector and free (local) ice cream sammies in the fridge. BOOM.
