A group of us went here to end the night. There are two rooms inside and lots of outside seating. I had a Peace Tree and my wife and I shared the nachos. No actual complaints our 2nd time around. I personally don't like the open model concept where you can sit (or have to in some instances) at shared tables with strangers. It was no issue this time it just isn't my favorite. First time we promptly left as we weren't trying to make new friends. The bartender was great and very efficient and friendly. However no one waited on us again after being at the table. Which if that's how it's supposed to be, no one told us and we saw a waitress wandering at other tables. Drinks were decent. We finally made it down to the Des Moines location of Single Speed Brewery on Sunday - you know, right off the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. The weather was absolutely perfect, feeling like the real start of bike-riding season, and let me tell you, that place was hopping! It seemed like hundreds of people who love biking and good beer all converged there. They were doing serious business that day with their awesome selection of handcrafted beers and some really high-quality gastro-pub food.  Everything we saw being delivered and eaten looked absolutely mouth watering! They've got plenty of seating, both inside and out, so you can choose between sunny spots and shade galore. The staff at the walk-up window were taking and filling orders as fast as humanly possible, while the one waitress we saw was literally running around trying to make people happy! The food runners were just as busy. We actually opted to just enjoy the sights, grab a couple of beers, and see all the numerous friends that we recognized coming and going on their bikes! SingleSpeed Brewing: Service So Bad It Turned Into a Group Bonding Experience I've had bad service before. I've had cold fries, forgotten drinks, and the occasional "oops, we lost your ticket" moment -- but SingleSpeed Brewing managed to redefine bad service in a way that was honestly kind of impressive. We had a party of 11. I know, big group. Tough table. But our server handled it with the enthusiasm of someone being forced to watch paint dry... in the rain... on their day off. Zero personality, zero interest, and a staggering inability to write down an order. Highlight of the evening: one poor guy orders street tacos. Twenty minutes later, he politely asks if they're coming. Meanwhile, another guy orders a Chicago dog, gets it, eats it, and then the server strolls back like it's open mic night and asks, "Were those pork street tacos?" Lady -- if you don't know what food you're bringing to which table 50 minutes later, maybe you're in the wrong line of work. And just when you think it couldn't get any worse, she tops it off by handing us a $300 bill and says, "Can you guys tell me what each of you had?" Oh sure, let's play Restaurant Clue for an hour while you stand there watching. All 11 of us agreed -- we'll never set foot in this place again. Food might've been decent, but it's hard to taste anything through pure, uncut aggravation. Final verdict: 0/5 for the server. 2/5 for the food. And 10/5 for the lifelong group chat jokes this disaster provided. SingleSpeed -- speed up the service or slow down on hiring people who hate people. read more

I loved my sandwich and brussel sprouts here. Ever had a vegetarian Reuben made with beets? Have a friend that's vegetarian and want to grab a drink with them? Get the vegetarian rueben. Literally my favorite sandwich here. And their brussel sprouts are amazing, I lowkey wish I ordered two. I will say their wings aren't all that. But they got a big menu so good variety. Anyway the service was also good, staff was friendly. The ambience is an open space setting. Honestly I recommend eating at the bar area rather than dining. The bar area just seems nicer unless the weather is nice and you can sit outside. read more

A fun restaurant. Inside and outside. Not as scenic as some Des Moines places as the levy blocks the view Of the river Big variety of beers. I tried the raspberry wheat beer. Interesting flavor. They also do something nice, you can get a little taste Of two of their beers for free. Outside the ordering is with a QR code. What we Ordered came super quick and we had lots If attention. Great system. Got the vegetarian Reuben. I liked it but the beets were crunchy. I would have preferred them to be cooked a Little more. But the flavor was good. Drinks great. Sub par food. I got tacos. Dry and skimpy meat. One whole taco was empty. Wife didn't care for her food as well. Patio hospitality charge 3%? We also ordered and paid at our table on our phones without help from a host. For spending a fair amount of money on a meal out with the family, and to have an expensive bad experience is disappointing. My wife and I arrived around noon on a Saturday. Surprisingly it wasn't busy which is ok with me . I have been excited to check this place out! It is a cool layout- two patios (one in front, one in back. The front one looks really cool I can't wait to ride my bike there during patio weather. My wife wants me to mention it was cold in there LOL. We ate in our coats. It was probably lower- mid 60s in there. I get it there's garage doors and brick walls. I sampled the galaxy wide haze- that was really good I just didn't want an 8% at noon. They have very good beers there I wanted to try them all but I settled for a whirl wide hazy- also tasty. We started out with the buffalo chicken salad and switched the chicken to grilled instead of fried. (Pic attached) we chose the ranch- so good! It was like dill which I've never had. Also, we got the bleu cheese dressing ( also recommend) I highly recommend especially if you don't wanna eat to heavy. You could split it too really it's a good portion. Then we ordered the CLT (cucumber lettuce tomato) it came with onion but we just picked that off and added bacon LOL. It also came with a whipped goat cheese spread. Also in the pic are the Brussels that we substituted the fries for. Very glad we did that. They were some of the best - they come with hoisin, little peanuts and cilantro. not too oily like a lot of Brussels come. Once again we over ordered but we finished everything. Much like the set up of their Waterloo location (there's also a Cedar Falls location--the original), there is a formal dining room, beer hall, and great patio space. I can't wait for it to cool off for them to open the big garage doors for an indoor/outdoor space. There is also a pretty neat kid area full of books, toys, and a chalkboard. And yes, they do have a brewery and have exclusive DSM beers. read more

Wanted to like this, but unfortunately, it's a flop, wasn't served water until after requesting a second time after our food was delivered, Mac and cheese was hot in some places and cold in others.. Pros, location, beer, and sharable plates. Cons: poor service, the atmosphere was the same as a waiting room. For an oil change., and the food was a hit or miss. Went to the new Des Moines location. Good atmosphere and LOTS of seating. Service was quick and friendly enough. Beer was alright, I had the cherry cheesecake sour but didn't really taste like cherry or cheesecake. Tasted more like your typical berry sour. My boyfriend got the tricycle and really enjoyed it. We went here on a Wednesday because on their website it said half off wings. However, I guess this was only for the Cedar Rapids location, which it didn't specify unless you clicked to read more info (other events specified the location on the main events page). We got an order of their loaded fries, which were good but anything with fries, bacon, and ranch will be good. We also got an order of the Buffalo wings and the Asian wings, both were very disappointing. The Buffalo had no flavor and weren't saucy at all, the Asian wings had a gritty sauce. The blue cheese dressing was super watery, just not what you expect from that kind of dressing. We would have ordered a different entree, but we thought we were getting a deal on the wings. Lots of flies flying around our food when we were eating inside. Just not worth it, if you're looking for a brewery in Des Moines, I recommend Lua. They have great beers and the food menu is simple but delicious. read more
