Banh Trang tron and banh hoi. Rice paper salad and woven vermicelli with crispy pork belly
    Linda N.

When walking up to this place, you're first greeted by the wafting smell of deliciousness. If you weren't hungry before, you're starving now. You walk in and it's a typical mom and pop Asian restaurant. It's crowded with almost every table full at 1pm. The front is staffed with 2 workers going as fast as they can. I was amazed at the variety of Vietnamese dishes this place served. It went far beyond your bowl of pho and grilled pork on rice. They had hot pot and family style fried fish, caramelized catfish, and sweet and sour soup to go with a bowl of rice. The server was friendly and the food came out fast once we placed our order. We started with the spring rolls which had a good amount of shrimp and pork paired with a peanut sauce. Pretty satisfied with this appetizer. We then had the banh hoi or woven vermicelli with crispy pork belly. This was swerved with a plate of mint, cilantro, lettuce, and a couple of other greens that I don't know the names of. The pork was perfect and crisp. Noodles were warm and when wrapped with the pork veggies and dipped in nuoc Cham(dipping sauce), every bite had you going back for more. I love an interactive dish that takes some assembly. Next was the rice paper salad, which wasn't on the menu, but I showed them a picture from Yelp, and he said they had it! This was my first time trying this dish and it was a plateful of so many savory flavors. Every flavor meshed so well together as well as the textures. Highly recommend this one. Finally the banh uot was a classic that I can't seem to find at most places. Like the previous dishes, it did not disappoint. The pork was seasoned and grilled to perfection lined with sides of cucumber, pickled daikon and carrots, and lettuce. Nuoc Cham was perfectly mixed as well. Overall, one of the better Vietnamese places I've tried in the US. Probably the best in the Midwest. Would come here every day if I lived in the area. I was highly satisfied.

    Phô!

Delish! We got a couple of noodle soup dishes as it was a cold day in Iowa. Phô was awesome, as was the chicken soup. We also got the Vietnamese spring rolls. They were also really good and the sauce it came with was good too. Decent service, need to pay at the counter afterwards. NBD!

TNT Vietnamese Restaurant is an oldie but a goodie. I used to frequent here a lot, but a few owner changes left me dining elsewhere instead. However, in more recent times it seems to have made a comeback. Not like before but different in an ok way. My beloved bun mam was good, not mindblownly delicious by any means. Bun mam is a very pungent flavor, largely created off shrimp paste, seafoods and crispy pork. It's a unique taste for sure, often referred to on menus as "seafood gumbo". It is not for the sensitive eater, FYI. I, however, LOVE this dish and if I see it on a Vietnamese restaurant menu, it's my automatic go to. This one could have been "more stinky" (for those that know what I mean, ya know what I mean) but it was still good. Fried tofu here is always fried hot with a great dipping sauce. Simple appetizer, always a crowd pleaser. The wings here are normally good but today it was busy for lunch and they failed to sauté the vegetables like they normally do. Wings were still good, just not their usual tastiness. All good, we still ate them. Egg rolls are standardly good, LOVE me some fish sauce and Sriracha to dip them in. Special Fried Rice was spectacular as always, love the sweet Chinese sausage in this dish. And yes, I dumped fish sauce and sriracha on this too. Judge me all you want, I don't comment when I see people dip their sushi in sweet & sour sauce ‍ Always in my Asian food rotation but I do miss the old bun mam recipe

Kids pho - love that they have this option since most pho places here don't.

We had a very, very bad experience here. The cleanliness of the establishment was the issue, not the food. We used to love going to this place until this happened. Just make sure you check your surroundings. Also, it was the way the management or employee handled the situation that was also appalling. Will not go back unless we know there's either new owners or a complete overhaul of the establishment and a thorough cleaning and inspection.

    An empty bowl of satisfaction!

Absolutely amazing. Take recommendations from the cooks, they are there to help. Number 45 is authentic, I've been to Vietnam in the mid 90's in support of UN program for children. This dish is from a certain city and it was very rememberable.

    Egg rolls, Wonton soup

We've driven by this joint for years- and finally pulled in to try it out...Delicious! The Vietnamese egg rolls are very different/better than what you are used to! Crispy/meaty/fantastic. I had wonton soup with 4 large Noodles and very tasty broth. I ordered Pad Kao Pao with beef. It comes with rice and heat level 1-5. I stepped up to a "4"....and our waiter wisely suggested "3". Great call! Delicious meal served with mushrooms, carrots, basil and snow peas & topped with a fried egg!!My wife had Phö and has more to take home! We'll be back!

Roasted pork belly sandwich is da best!

We like to come here to get Pho and Vietnamese sandwiches. Considering my GF is Vietnamese and we both love Vietnamese food, you can safely assume that we frequently visit this type of restaurants. This place looks like most small Asian restaurants. Kind of ugly, with terrible bathroom, meaning the food is probably pretty good, which it is. The Pho is great most of the time, but a miss on rare occasion. Other soups and solid foods are good but nothing special. Where this place really shines is their sandwiches. It is hands down the best Vietnamese sandwich place in Iowa or best I've had anywhere including big cities. Their bread is warm and crispy. The vegetables inside are fresh and crunchy with just the right amount of sauce. And then the meat, and especially the roasted pork is absolutely amazing. And the best part is these sandwiches are $3. These sandwiches would be $9 at a normal restaurant because they are that well made. It's an absolute steal. We driving from Waukee, which is 20-25 min away just to get sandwiches to go. And we eat them in the car while making moaning noises like we are having the best food sex of our lives. If I was to rate this place on sandwiches alone, I would easily give it full 5 stars. But all the other food is just good and nothing special so I have to go with 4. In either case, you will enjoy your meal at this little hole in the wall.

Recommend this place! What I really like are their home style and speciality dishes. Went today and had a lovely meal with shrimp cream cheese rolls, spring rolls and banh Trang tron (rice paper salad) service is nice and you get a good amount for your money. Would recommend!

#36 - Bun Cha Gio Tom Thit Nuong - Vermicelli bowl with pork and egg rolls
    Kurt F.

I love this place! You likely have driven right by TNT and simply didn't notice it. It's quite non descript, tucked away at the far northern end of the Harding Hills strip mall. The inside is fairly understated as well. There's no big collection of knick knacks strewn about. Just 11 tables, a counter, and the hall to the kitchen and bathrooms. The food here is what shines. The egg rolls were fantastic. They were crispy and flavorful without being overly greasy. They are served with lightly pickled carrots and lettuce. The fried squid is delicious. Ours was perfectly cooked. It comes with slices of deep fried jalapeno mixed in for a little kick, as well. We also had to try the #60 - Com Bo La Lot. They were delicious and the fire roasting really comes through in the flavor of the wrapper. I highly recommend them. I ate the #36 Vermicelli bowl as well. It was wonderful. I included a picture on the Yelp page for TNT. The pork, much like the Com Bo La Lot, had a delightful fire roasted note to it. I'm a fan of dumping my lemon sauce directly into the bowl, and the resulting taste did not disappoint. The #5 Cha Gio Viet Nam egg rolls were also great. They were nice and crispy and the filling is delicious. Gratuitous use of the lemon sauce is also advised, because lemon sauce on egg rolls is amazing. The servers were polite and extremely attentive. I never found myself waiting for more than a minute or two for a water refill, and they asked us before we even had a chance to ask them. I highly recommend TNT Vietnamese. Their food is top notch, their service is amazing, and the atmosphere is pleasant. Go eat delicious Vietnamese food!

    Rice with Rotisserie Quail
    Nam T.

Stopped here for lunch with the family. I ordered the rice dish with Rotisserie Quail. Flavor was very good. It's a sweet and salty sauce or marinade. I would definitely order it again next time. My son wanted a boba drink. He got the strawberry with whip cream. Tasted really good. Not too sweet or too icy. Service is ok. But that's what you would expect at these places.

    Braised pork and egg stew
    Joey L.

Have been to TNT a few times and have not been disappointed as of yet. They are the only restaurant in Des Moines that I know of that serves traditional braised pork and egg stew dish (#119 on the menu). Everything is reasonably priced so you can definitely get a good meal on the cheap here. The bahn mi sandwich was only $2.99, for example, which is the cheapest I've seen it anywhere. Spring rolls here are good as well. Very nice staff. Hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant so cleanliness can seem a little questionable. But don't let looks fool you, this place is a great option for authentic Vietnamese food.

Biggest disappointment was that while alcohol options showed on the menu, they were unable to serve any alcohol - claiming that their liquor license had not yet been renewed. I was craving a spring roll with peanut sauce, so to start things off, we ordered #90 Bo Bia steamed spring rolls with shredded shrimp, carrots and sausage served with plum sauce (see picture). While the wrap was thicker than the 'paper' wraps that I'm used to, they were very good - and I really liked the plum sauce. My wife was undecided and our very helpful waiter Archie, suggested #69 Com Ga Chien Xa Ot (chicken breast fried with spicy lemon grass - see picture). It was good, but both of us would have preferred a bit more spice, as we ended up adding Siracha at the table. I was considering #99 Banh Xeo Vietnamese style crispy pancake stuffed with shrimp, pork & veggies based on the menu picture, but Archie talked me into #97 Banh Tam Bi Xiu Mai udon noodles with shredded pork, steamed pork meatballs and veggies instead (see picture). I was impressed with the coconut milk and lemon sauce that he poured over it when served with the instructions to stir it all together - very tasty combination of savory, sweet and tart, with a very slight spiciness. Was a warming experiencing hearing patrons throw a few traditional Lunar New Year greetings at each other and the owners. It's a small mom and pop shop, so much so, pop was the sole soldier working the entire front of the house. As such, don't expect super fast service, but good service nonetheless. We started with the fresh spring rolls, which were good, and their fried egg rolls, which I probably won't order again. The egg rolls were pretty much veggies, loosely filled, and served with a sweet and sour type dipping sauce. It was more of an Americanized Chinese style egg roll, not a Vietnamese cha gio with nouc cham. I ordered the pho dac biet and it was VERY good. The large is HUGE. Most places back home have suffered from shrink-flation and large bowls are tiny now. Not this place, I struggled to finish the bowl. My friends got the seafood pho, and another got the pho ga (chicken). I of course did not slide my chopsticks in theirs and swipe a bite, but they said they enjoyed theirs. I would definitely come back here again and maybe try some of their other dishes.
