We had high hopes for this restaurant. It was pretty busy, which is usually a good sign. Unfortunately, our experience was not positive. We ordered two appetizers--egg rolls and pot stickers, which were good. The egg drop soup was decent as well, so we were excited to get our entrees--broccoli beef and vegetable lo mein. The dishes LOOKED amazing and fresh, but they smelled like a dirty ashtray. I dont know if the wok was dirty or if something had been burnt, but it tasted terrible. We left both meals on the table after one bite. I'd like to think this was a one-off, but given how bad the food was, we won't be giving Lucky Bamboo another chance. read more

This place has been a staple for my boyfriend and I ever since we discovered it. Their Mongolian beef is my favorite in the area. My boyfriend is a big fan of the Szechuan beef and general tso's chicken. The crab rangoons aren't our favorite but the meal and the delicious soup that your meal comes with makes up for it. If you are looking for some of the best Asian food in Ankeny look no further than the Lucky Bamboo. The hardest decision you will make is to eat in, take out or have it delivered. If you are eating in or doing carry out watch out for the constant flow of traffic in and out of the restaurant and the cramped parking lot. The spaces are too small and everyone seems to park like.... Regardless of the sketchy parking situation we love this place and the food is consistently delicious and as fresh as it can be. Sadly I always seem to forget pictures because my mouth is watering and I forget myself! The restaurant itself is inviting if not a little small. It is always clean and always bustling with the walk in traffic. The staff are quick to acknowledge you and even faster to get your order ready to go! The order g is done at the counter and you server yourself food and drinks. I love the Kung Pao stir fry and all of the variations are fantastic. Kim likes the Ginger Chicken or the Sesamee Chicken Special. The Crab Rangoon are mouthwatering and crispy while the spring rolls are flaky and delightful. Even take home the appetizers are fresh! My last meal was the Empress Shrimp Special, good and bad, the flavors were spot on and the shrimp was snappy and fresh, but the breading was completely soggy, I would not render that to go again. Pro tip: if you order a dish with spice levels be careful as I really enjoy a spicy dish, but this is no joke here. 5 star heat is a 10+. Scorching and hot , in fact Just while writing this review I began sweating at the memory! Spice Level 3 maybe 4 are right if you like to sweat but still want to taste tour food. It was a positive first visit that will bring us back to Lucky Bamboo. The combination of good pricing, great customer service, and tasty Pacific Rim food options made it a winning combination. Situated in a Delaware Avenue strip mall, this restaurant has plenty of parking, lots of interior table seating, offers takeout, and has a casual overall tone. Sadness I think today it was not even just okay, I have been here and it was good but not today they get two stars one for their crab Ragu, and one for their teriyaki, I usually get Chinese here but based on cold hot and sour soup and icky egg flower and messed up beef king poa I won't waste my time. Or money $50 for bad food is ridiculous. I need flavor in my food, I like my soup hot and flavorful, not cold better and tasting undercooked and I need my beef. Kung pow cooked not raw beef. By the way, the staff saw we did not eat any of our soup even though egg flour which we paid extra for and they did not even comment or ask. Hands down the best Chinese food in Ankeny without a doubt. My family goes nowhere else. Service is always good the food is hot and they make it very quick. Hubby got the Teriyaki Bowl but dove in before I could take a picture. He said that it was as good as the JC Mall teriyaki. Man this was my favorite go to spot for my Asian food fix in Ankeny. Let me start with the positive, crab ragoons were on point and delicious. We ordered cashew chicken, which we order every time, what happened? No flavor, very bland. Ordered fried rice which was $12.99 by the way. Best Asian food in Ankeny or perhaps the Des Moines metro area! Consistently great food, always busy but that's a good sign!

I took some time before posting this review. I wanted a clear head and to be rational. We ordered our food online. No issue. Picked up our food. No issue. We arrived home and opened the food. The cashew chicken had a very pungent smell. I cannot even explain the odor. The moo goo chicken didn't look appetizing at all. We called the restaurant immediately to explain that we are very leery about this food. I have had cashew chicken several times in my life and it has never smelled like this. The moo goo chicken and the quality of ingredients seemed subpar, with vegetables appearing wilted. It had clearly rested for sometime. As noted earlier, we called immediately and spoke with the manager regarding our concerns. We stated that there was a very pungent odor coming off the cashew chicken. No. It wasn't the spice or the sauce. This was a spoiled smell. We even offered to bring the food back as we have not touched it, nor had any plans to do so. We wanted them to take a look at it. We were met with a very snarky response and bizarre questions about "where do you normally eat?" What the heck kind of question is that? We have been to several restaurants and I always get the cashew chicken. This one did not smell right at all. I'm not going to eat anything that smelled that bad. We wanted them to be aware that there could be something potentially wrong with their chicken but instead we're treated as the problem. If this is their management, I would strong caution patronage there. We were truly taken aback by not only the dismissal but the attitude. We were completely dismissed. For us, we this was the first and last time we will step foot into Lucky Bamboo. This visit was marred by an poor food quality and concerning management issues that significantly impacted the overall experience. A quick side note... at a store down the road we struck up a conversation with a stranger and apologized that were kind of in a confused state at the experience we just had at Lucky Bamboo. As fate would have it, she recently had a similar experience. She even stated how rude the staff was. We did feel a bit validated by this. We thought maybe we did something wrong but neither of us wanted to be sick. Not sure what is going on with this establishment but would advise you to think twice before going. read more

1st time visit to Lucky Bamboo Asian Cuisine in Ankeny this past Saturday, and I'm telling you right now that they earned 5-stars from both of us. You order at the counter, so like many restaurants such as these, I'd suggest looking at the menu online before you get there. SO MANY dishes to choose from, but we opted with one of the "special" dishes, as they all come with soup of day, egg roll, rangoon, and your choice of white or fried rice. I got Cashew Chicken (pic), and my wife got orange Chicken. You seat yourself, and here's a bit of a warning. If it's crowded, which it was on this noon hour, it can be rather noisy due to the low ceilings (not Lucky Bamboo's fault if you ask me.) So, if you go, and if it's crowded, be aware ... the excellent food will make up for it! So, how about the restrooms? If you follow me, you know I checkout the restrooms for my reviews, but in this case I saw that a man had just taken his 2 kids into the men's room, so I thought I'd wait 'til I got home. Next time. The atmosphere alone is impeccable in this place, just stunning! I'm a biiiiig person on cleanliness, especially about where I eat. A huge indicator to me that a place probably isn't cleanly is if their lobby is obviously dirty (ie.. multiple dirty tables, dead bugs on the windows seal, muddy floors, dirty condiment bottles, etc.) but Lucky Bamboo almost instantly put my mind at ease once I stepped foot into the business. Not only are they cleanly, but the food is delicious. I've lived in Iowa for going on 4 years now, and one of the biggest disadvantage I keep running into is poorly made, not appetizing oriental food. I truly only have a handful I would comfortably order takeout from and Lucky Bamboo is one of them! The service is quick too. I came in last time during a lunch rush hour at around 12:30-1 pm and all I had time to do was pick a seat, wash my hands, and then BOOM my plate of food was dropped in front of me. I love this place. It's weird but my favorite dish is their sweet and sour chicken. It's standard and no frills but always good. I love being able to get the chicken and corn soup with my food along with 2 crab rangoons. The place is always very clean and inviting. The staff is fairly friendly but always efficient. Best Chinese food in Ankeny hands down. The decor is simple. A fast casual type atmosphere. Love the large fish aquarium. The menu has a nice a variety with the standard Americanized Chinese dishes like General Tso's chicken, lo mein, and Mongolian Beef, a Vietnamese Pho, and a "Japanese" teriyaki chicken. They have a nice lunch combo that has soup, egg roll, crab Rangoon, and a main course. All for a very reasonable price. In addition to the menu variety, the food quality of very good for the price. Was up in the Ankeny area and got the craving for Chinese. Thanks to yelp and someone hearing our conversation we headed over. The lunch rush was just ending. Someone had called ahead and was picking up their meal. I know that is handy and located in a strip mall area it's helpful to keep them busy. The inside of the restaurant was very up to date and the screens displaying the menu were very nice and flashy. Everything was very clean and bright. The menus are easy to follow and we ordered easily. Sat down and waited for our food. The soup came out first and was egg drop and pretty good. When our food came out we had to ask again for the hot tea we ordered. The person who took our orders was very friendly but the person delivering them have off the feeling he wished he was somewhere else. I have no complaints on the meal. It was good sized helping and tasty. I did happen to bit into the crab Rangoon with little to none cream cheese filling. I think I've been more impressed with other places. Perhaps I picked the wrong thing. I don't venture up to Ankeny a lot but my dining partner said that she would rather go elsewhere. While several other users have raved about Lucky Bamboo, I would suggest that discerning palates look elsewhere for your Chinese food fix in Ankeny. The quick order counter was efficient enough in taking our order, while virtually ignoring any pleasantries such as "hello". I ordered General Tso, my old standby. My vegetarian friend asked which vegetables came in a couple different dishes, and this was adequately explained. He asked about tofu and was told any dish could be made with tofu, upon which he ordered General Tso's Tofu. The specials come with soup, an egg roll and a crab rangoon plus fried rice. Not a bad deal! My friend considered an order of fried wontons before I clued him in that they had meat (typically a small bit of pork in the center of fried wontons), and we confirmed with staff that they did in fact have meat. A richly yellow chicken based egg drop soup was brought to the table. My poor friend, alas what can one do. Just a few minutes later the soup was joined by our dishes. My friend's General Tso was actually General Tso's chicken, plus tofu. He didn't want to make a fuss and is not as strict of a vegetarian, so he pushed the chicken bits to the side for me and ate the rest. The chicken was cut a bit too large for easy consumption and was slightly rubbery, indicating it was overcooked. Despite all the cooking, the chicken was battered in something that did not crisp at all, rather was a soft blobby mess soaked in an over-thickened, innocuously sweet General Tso sauce. Some of the bell pepper was undercooked as well. Egg rolls were crispy, one of the few satisfactory items in the meal, and the cream cheese rangoon, was requisitely creamy, if not exactly flavorful. All in all we left disappointed and in absolutely no hurry to give the Lucky Bamboo a second chance. I guess the luck ran out. read more
