Even the napkin dispensers are dirty

Really wanted to like this place. The woman at the cashier seemed polite but it was all downhill from there. Walking to my table I noticed that my shoes were sticking to the floor. Then I saw the community spoons and chopsticks on the table and they were filthy. The food came and my hot and sour soup had no mushrooms or bamboo shoots (ironic for the name of this restaurant) but it did have celery. The tofu was actually ok in this soup. I ordered the Szechuan chicken and it was doused in what the cashier told me was a "homemade brown sauce", but to me it was simply liquid brown sugar. No spice whatsoever, the chicken wasn't seasoned, and the only good part about this main dish were the carrots. I told the cashier about my concerns and she said, "that's too bad, I hope you come back." She didn't offer me a replacement meal or a partial refund. I paid $20 for this experience so you don't have to. I won't ever return.

    What I ordered (Mongolian chicken)

I ordered Mongolian Chicken, and General Chicken. We also ordered sesame balls, hot and sour soup and springs rolls. We placed our order for pick up since the service fees are CRAZY when you order delivery (almost 25%). I went to pick it up, and it was all crammed into one bag to where I had to buckle it in because it was not packaged for being in a car. No big deal. Got home, and we had no clue what we had been given. The pics attached show what I ordered vs what I was given for the Mongolian Chicken I ordered. I tried to call the restaurant, and it goes to voicemail like its someone's personal phone, and they never called me back. I left a message wanting to confirm what I had been given because it was not savory or spicy, and the vegetables were overcooked and mushy. Nothing even remotely what you would expect with Mongolian. The sauce was flavorless. The Hot and Sour Soup has ZERO sour to it. Its a boring broth with no depth or flavor. Super disappointing. The general chicken was ok, my husband ate it without complaint, but it had some decent heat when he had requested no spice. Sesame balls were good. Spring rolls are clearly purchased frozen and just fried. They taste likes ones you get from Sysco. I have raved about this place before when we ate in the first time. The last 2 times have been awful. Their restaurant is empty when I stop in, so I wonder if its becoming a common thing. I think my biggest irritation is that I called and no one answered the phone nor returned my call, but I clearly did not get what I ordered. There are WAY too many places to order Asian food to keep ordering from this place...

    Vietnamese Grilled Pork Vermicelli Special

Ordered takeout from Bamboo House last weekend and had a great experience. The staff were friendly and had our order in ready about 20 mins. Both the Vietnamese Vermicelli special and Beef & Broccoli were delicious and packaged well. Also had the steamed dumplings and they hit the spot. A welcome addition to this area of West Des Moines!

Food Tasted Spoiled, as if it contained urine. We could not eat our carry out order. Due yourself a favor and make some La Choy at home.

Food is flavorless yet smothered with sauce, rice is probably a day old. Spicy means there is no spicy.

Was promptly seated and didn't have to wait long to get my order in or receive my food. Now I was in early so I could see how it could get busy as service picks up because seating can be a little limited. The restaurant was clean and decorated well enough. The location doesn't do it many favors but the food is good so I'll likely come back. I requested the New Delhi-Style Noodles because I enjoy yellow curry dishes and was needless to say I was impressed. The vermicelli noodles were great dipped into the accompanying fish sauce with curried chicken bites in between. The portion was solid for lunch and I didn't feel like I needed more to get me through until dinner. Only gripe is maybe the price is a little high for anything other than chicken but that's life right now. I'll likely stop back in to try a few more dishes when I'm back in the area.

Potstickers were just okay. The dipping sauce didn't do them any favors--this felt like an easy upgrade they're missing. Imperial Egg Rolls were the biggest letdown. At $17 for three, I expected something memorable...they just weren't. Pad Thai landed squarely in "average." Grilled Honey Roast Chicken Egg Noodles was a mixed bag. The chicken itself was delicious, but the noodles were pretty bland--and oddly, they didn't really work together. Royal Fried Rice was a win. The combo of BBQ pork, sweet sausage, and shrimp came together really well. Seafood Noodle dish was unfortunately pretty bland. All in all, a few bright spots, but not a place we're rushing back to--though I'd reorder those wings without hesitation.

My husband enjoyed his hot and sour soup as well as his sushi. I enjoyed my corn and egg drop soup as well as my beef bulgogi. My only complaint is that my beef bulgogi was served on lettuce, which I hate. It was easy to pick out, but I wish it wasn't there. Prices were very reasonable for the amount of food provided. We haven't gotten her further down the rabbit hole just yet. Lol Mandarin Grill & Sushi Bar is located in a small strip pretty much across 128th from the Walgreens there on University. Parking is mainly in a small lot in front of the restaurant with additional parking nearby. Seating is a combination of tables and chairs and booths. As always we were greeted right away when we walked in and seated immediately. Our drink orders were taken a minute or two later and we were given time to look over the menu. I've never had a bad experience here! The food and service is ALWAYS on point! We ordered the following: 1x Firecracker roll (Right) - Cream cheese, kani, jalapeno, cilantro on the inside. Tempura battered and fried. Spicy mayo, crunchies, unagi sauce and spicy tuna on the outside. 1x Unicorn roll (Left) - Tempura shrimp and avocado on the inside. Spicy tuna, soy paper, raspberry and a house sauce on the outside 1x Shrimp tempura roll (middle) The sushi rolls hit the table after a short wait. We both loved the Firecracker roll! The Unicorn roll was very good too. I don't think I've ever had a raspberry sauce on a sushi roll before... Nice! I was strangely impressed by the shrimp tempura roll... While this is a basic standard roll at most places the shrimp was more heavily breaded... The crunch factor on this one was fantastic! It's that contrasting texture thing I guess... If you're not into sushi the other menu items here are great too! The menu is extensive and covers a lot of items we normally associate with Chinese food along with Korean dishes as well. If you haven't been here it's worth the stop! If you just haven't been here in a minute... It's time to go back! Pro-tip. I have two soups I consider kryptonite to a cold. One is Brenda's Spicy Noodle soup at the Vietnam Cafe in Merle Hay Mall... The other is here! Their Hot & Sour soup with shrimp. Add rice, a side of kimchi and extra chiles. The food was actually pretty good. The restaurant could use some new chairs and booths, but the service was short and to the point. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall establishment. Food: Korean menu Tangsooyook (Korean Sweet and Sour Pork) 4/5- the dish didn't come out looking that appetizing because it was drenched in sauce but it was actually good and tasted as it should taste. They also have a chicken version of this. Mapo Tofu 3.5/5 - this was Korean-style. It was pretty tasty as well and had a hint of gochujang in it. Chinese menu Lunch Shrimp Lo Mein 3/5- this was okay. I probably wouldn't get it again as it was mostly veggies and hardly any noodles. Flavor wasn't bad at all. Lunch General's Chicken 4/5- this was delicious and chicken was crispy. This tasted more like the generals chicken from the Panda restaurant that used to be at Kaleidoscope. All-in-all, we would definitely try the other dishes, especially from the Korean menu.

The wait time is too long with service not as customer forward as in the past. Customers rely on consistency for a good return on their money and taste fulfillment being primary at a time when small food businesses are losing customers due to cost and food quality. The inside is well worn with decor especially the floor needing a deep cleaning which makes one spend less time in the environment. As times change businesses must maintain good quality control to retain repeat customers.
