    Sesame chicken and fried rice

I really wanted to like Bamboo House, but honestly, I left disappointed with the quality of the food overall. Starting with the egg rolls, when I took a bite, they were still frozen in the middle, and the wrapper inside wasn't even fully cooked. I did call the restaurant to let them know, and to their credit, they offered to remake them, which I do appreciate. However, things didn't improve much from there. I paid extra to substitute fried rice instead of steamed rice, but what I received was essentially just steamed rice with a slight tint. There were no vegetables, no eggs, and no real flavor. Charging extra for that level of quality is frustrating. The sesame chicken was also underwhelming. It tasted like plain battered chicken tossed in a sauce that had little to no flavor. I actually had to try to doctor it up at home just to make it enjoyable. The crab rangoons were okay, but nothing special. For a $30 meal, I expected much better quality and flavor. I hate to say this, especially since they've just opened, but based on this experience, it didn't feel worth the money.

We try one new restaurant each month just to keep things fresh, so this time I suggested Fawn's. I'm really glad we did. I had heard so many great things about the food so I was excited to try it. When I saw the menu, though, I was a little nervous because they serve Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Laotian food. In my experience, restaurants that try to serve all kinds of Asian food rarely do one or all of them well. I ordered Pad Thai and my husband got Evil Jungle Prince. I was very pleased. It was the best Pad Thai I've ever eaten. It was SO good! My husband loved his dish, too. It had chicken and vegetables with a spicy sauce made with red curry and coconut milk. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were huge. We each got two meals out of our dinners. I love it when that happens. The place isn't fancy. It's in a small strip mall and doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside it's very clean and well-kept. There's not much for ambience besides two flat screen TVs. It doesn't matter because it's the food that really stands out. The service was excellent, too. My husband had his iced tea refilled twice without even asking. Great affordable food and good service. What more can you ask for? If you love Asian food, give them a try. I can't wait to go back and try more of their dishes.

I had asked her twice if they could turn the music down, which she did ask the guy behind the bar, I don't know if he was a bartender or a cook, but I heard him say what do they want, I've turned it down four times. Well, yes, I did overhear that I was sitting very clause to the bar. It was very rude of him, and I had been very kind and requested that the music be turned down some. The food was pretty good, I had the fig and creamy goat cheese flatbread. Overall, it might be a very good place for other people, rudeness is not acceptable.

While a bit of a hidden gem off of 86th Street, the building is modern, chic and inviting - with a large covered patio area connected to the north side of the building. The one negative is that the temperature is kept very cold inside, so consider bringing a sweater or light jacket to stay comfortable. Unfortunately, tonight was a bit cold outside, so it was a coinflip on which was better - we opted for the patio seating and the wind settled down during our visit to get quite comfortable. We started with a Cuban Martini and Sojito (see picture) along with an order of Bang Bang Shrimp (see picture) for an appetizer. We enjoyed the drinks and the Bang Bang Shrimp with the drizzled Yum Yum-type sauce was delicious! For our main courses, my wife ordered the Thai Pasta (see picture) and I opted for the Fig, Avocado and Goat Cheese Salad (see picture). As is our custom, we both shared bites from each of our plates and liked both of them very much - although the Thai Pasta definitely had a bit more 'kick'. We ordered the Tres Leches for dessert (remembering it from our last visit), but unfortunately found that they were sold out, so had to leave without dessert. If you are looking for a modern, unique, Asian fusion type restaurant in the Johnston area, Roots 95 won't disappoint. Potstickers were just okay. The dipping sauce didn't do them any favors--this felt like an easy upgrade they're missing. Imperial Egg Rolls were the biggest letdown. At $17 for three, I expected something memorable...they just weren't. Pad Thai landed squarely in "average." Grilled Honey Roast Chicken Egg Noodles was a mixed bag. The chicken itself was delicious, but the noodles were pretty bland--and oddly, they didn't really work together. Royal Fried Rice was a win. The combo of BBQ pork, sweet sausage, and shrimp came together really well. Seafood Noodle dish was unfortunately pretty bland. All in all, a few bright spots, but not a place we're rushing back to--though I'd reorder those wings without hesitation.

They need to stock up for millennials and the genzeers who want options. The total vibe was very peaceful and it allowed you to sit and think.

There is limited table service, as many amenities are self-serve. As an Asian, this was great: let me eat in peace :D. Nonetheless, the employees were pleasant and came to check on us to clear our table. We seldom dine at mixed/fusion Thai in California, so expectations were low upon seeing the menu. They have a small menu, but enough varieties for everyone. We ordered Khao poon with tofu, after-school fried rice (what we call pineapple fried rice), and eggrolls (not pictured). The soup was great: enough spiced, fragrance, and heat -- added extra chili flakes for my preference. However, the only disappointment was the tofu, as they were not cooked in the broth, simply added prior to serving. Would have loved them lightly fried for texture and flavor. Then again, it is the Midwest, so I didn't expect many tofu lovers for them to go through the trouble. Still rate it 5/5. The fried rice was delicious: Requested level 3 spiciness, which was too spicy for my uncle, but he managed to enjoy it. He would order it again, but at level 2 spiciness. The portion size is big enough for two more meals, so he was happy about that. We would dine here again next time we visit Des Moines.

The atmosphere was fun and modern without feeling overdone. I was happy to see that the Thai tea could be made with oat milk. We ordered the Pad Thai with chicken, Lao sausage, Dala dumplings, and Nam Khao with sour pork. The Nam Khao at spice level 3 was milder than expected but still enjoyable. The dumplings had a great texture, and while the filling was bland, the dipping sauce made up for it and was delicious and complemented the dish perfectly. The Lao sausage was sweet and garlicky, but the sticky rice was a little dry. The Pad Thai was just how I like it with fresh vegetables and not overly saucy. Parking is hard to find, and it is on a busy street. So plan accordingly. It took us about 15 minutes to find decent parking that was half a block away. We didn't mind the walking, but we thought there would be a designated parking lot. But there is not unfortunately. Overall, we had a good experience and would recommend this spot if you are looking for Lao and Thai flavors.
