Sweet ... everything was sweet even the two entrees. Pot stickers were over done to the point of being crispy. Egg rolls and egg drop soup was good. Egg foo young patty was breaded in some way then covered in sauce meat mushrooms and vegetables unpalatable and sweet. Since I have moved back to Iowa, I have had Hy-Vee's Chinese twice but today decided to use the Yelp app and found China Cafe. The crab Rangoon was the staple of the meal. It may have been one of the better crab ragoons I have ever had and it alone will make me go back. The egg drop soup was ok, the fried rice wasn't very good at all and the generals chicken was pretty good. Overall I'll rate it a 4. China Cafe in Johnston has been going through many changes in the last few years. Initially there was a well established restaurant with the same ownership for many years, that was a good place to have oriental food locally. They then sold to an proprietor that called it, Cafe (still Oriental) and the quality dropped. We now have China Cafe back in Johnston and it is better than ever. If you miss the very popular GREAT CHINA that was in Urbandale, you would not be disappointed coming to the new, China Cafe. The quality and flavors are back, near by. We have had Pot Stickers, various chicken and beef dishes and all were solid in flavor, quality, and portion size. They also serve very good Vietnamese Pho that is of equal quality of other places that are much farther in the near downtown area. They have other Vietnamese dishes too, however I have not tried them. The reason I did not give the review 5 stars is not due the food at all, it is because of the limited servers. The night we went there was only 1 person. He did an outstanding job but it appeared he was running around to accommodate the entire floor. The wait overall was not bad with respectful timing just that we had to ask for items that if not so rushed, should have come to us without a request.
