This was my husband and my first time at the China Café in Johnston. Our server attended to us right away and was very pleasant. The food was excellent as you can see by the photo. The café itself was very clean and nicely decorated. We will definitely be back.

Returned for another visit and no problems with the rice. Also asked for spicier, which was fulfilled. All prior comments stand; see below for further details.

We've ordered takeout from here several times during COVID-19. Every time the food has been fresh, delivered hot, and has great flavor! Egg drop soup, egg rolls, crab Rangoon, Mongolian beef, chicken fried rice, orange chicken, it's all sooooo good! The staff is always very friendly too! Photo is of my chicken fried rice after I had a serving and there was still a ton left! I would've taken photos of everything else but I was too late and it was gone

Wonderful place to come eat. They make your food fresh when you order it. The menu selection is huge!! Very friendly staff, willing to make your dining experience as nice as they can. We have eaten here on three separate occasions and they are consistently very, very good. Tonight we got the Chicken Fried Rice and the Vegetable Fried Rice. Both come with Soup and Egg Roll or Crab Rangoon. We also got an order of Pot Stickers. All for $23.00. Now that is a great deal!

It has good pho and fresh spring rolls. Small place but seems to have a decent lunch crowd.

Not great service at all. Ordered moo shu and it came with tortillas like you eat with tacos instead of the traditional wrapping.

No true wow factor but also wasn't terrible. I guess it was satisfying in its unique right. $15-$17 a bowl. Add $4 for gluten free. Ramen noodles are made of egg so I opted for the gluten free glass noodles in my tom yum. My bowl came to $21.50. I did not really enjoy my ramen. It was not the flavors I wanted. The texture of the noodles didn't belong in a tom yum soup. I had a taste of Mr W's tonkatsu and I felt it was overpowered with a bamboo and charred pork flavor. Extremely salty as well. He enjoyed it ok but also agreed it was very rich. We all shared spicy edemame and crab rangoons. I did not like the edemame it was seasoned with a sweet and sour finishing glaze with red pepper flakes. Not the right flavor for me. Service was ok. Food arrived quickly and great presentation. Restaurant was busy for a Thursday night. Restaurant was decorated beautifully in Japanese theme decor. Quaint and fun. All in all...it was ok but not my favorite. It was nice to try a different ramen place in the Des Moines area with our ramen crazy friends.

Hawker Kitchen brings authentic Malaysian street food flavors right into the heart of Des Moines,…read moreand it's a spot that feels both comforting and exciting if you're craving Southeast Asian dishes. Char Kueh Teow This dish stood out immediately which has a smoky wok hei flavor (the "breath of the wok") coated the flat rice noodles, giving them that deep caramelized edge that's hard to find outside of Malaysia. The prawns were plump and juicy, and the mix of soy, garlic, and chili gave just the right balance of savory and spicy. Fresh cucumbers and pickled vegetables on the side added a refreshing crunch, making each bite balanced and addictive. Laksa Rich, creamy, and fragrant, the laksa broth was a highlight. The curry coconut base carried layers of spice without being overwhelming, and every sip warmed you from the inside out. The noodles were cooked just right, with toppings that tied it together from seafood to herbs. It's the kind of bowl that makes you pause between spoonfuls just to savor the aroma. Satay The chicken satay had a lovely turmeric and lemongrass marinade, grilled to a slight char that locked in the smoky flavor. Tender on the inside with crispy edges, it paired perfectly with the bold, nutty, and slightly spicy peanut dipping sauce. The cucumber slices on the side helped cut through the richness, just like you'd get back at a hawker stall in Malaysia. Overall Hawker Kitchen is a gem for anyone looking for authentic Malaysian comfort food in Des Moines. Portions are generous, flavors are bold and true to their roots, and the variety on the menu makes it worth repeat visits. If you're new to Malaysian cuisine, start with the satay and char kueh teow; if you're a fan already, the laksa will feel like home.
