Great friendly service, not your typical Asian buffet is how I would describe this experience. I expected lines of food options in a massive buffet layout. How the China Moon displayed their options was just having a few popular menu items out to choose from. The buffet comes with a choice of soup, appetizers, main dishes and desserts. Beverages were water, Pepsi products, teas, coffee or mango drink on the buffet (it was really good). Another table even asked if they could have white rice vs the fried rice, the server noted this will be right out. The food wasn't bland at all, had good flavor. I would go back as it was delicious, I just wished I could have tried their shrimp item, but it had mushrooms and I wasn't going to test my allergies. I also need to ask what is all on the dessert table as I wasn't able to eat the one cookie. It was a double wammy for me in the allergy department of coconut and almonds. This place was pretty bad. The service was ok I guess which was the highlight unfortunately. We arrived and ordered then went to wash our hands and by the time we returned our food arrived. Way too quick to be freshly made. That was confirmed when we dug in, it was clear the food was already prepped and I'm guessing microwaved. The flavor was decent but texture was soggy. The peas in the tasteless fried rice looked sickly. To top it all off there's a 3% charge for paying with a card. I'm guessing the guy walking around looking like the penguin was the owner? Friday night supper - first time here. Seated quickly (only 1 other table in the restaurant). Drinks and apps (crab rangoons) came super fast. Meals were SO good! Littlest one (a Panda fan) ordered lo mein noodles - plain - and orange chicken. She said it was almost as good as her fav place. Sesame chicken, Mongolian beef, and combo lo mein were also a hit. China Moon has been an Ankeny staple for as long as I've lived here, which is 14 years. We went consistently for many years, it dropped off our radar for a long time and then during the stay at home time of Covid, we went back. We started getting lunches, which are a fantastic value. My lunch was a full sized entree, plus soup, an egg roll, crab rangoon AND a chicken wing...for under $10. The food has always been hot and fresh and served by friendly people. Our dinner takeout was just as good and just as economically priced. All you do is look them up online, give them a call and have it delivered or go pick it up. Nothing like a Chinese restaurant owned by a local business. I came here on a Thanksgiving evening and it was rather empty. I ordered the sesame chicken, wonton soup, orange chicken, crab rangoon, and chicken lo-mein. They were all A-OK. The service was A-OK, and I had to ask for more bowls of rice numerous times, and the amount they gave us (party of 8) was not enough. But overall, the staff was nice and accommodated our table's needs well. You won't necessarily find authentic Chinese food here, but there's nothing wrong with americanized Chinese food, thus I give this place an A-OK rating. BATHROOM REVIEW: Located past a long corrider near the front entrance, the bathroom featured a urinal and stall. IN the stall is where they kept several cleaning items, like several vacuums. He stated that I used the same groupon for several orders (complete lie I was in Mexico one of the dates he stated) because he does not update printed groupons used and that he was losing money on groupons and to take my business elsewhere andI always tipped 20+% on carry out. My server was very professional and provided service that I'd expect at a far more expensive restaurant. Courteous and kind throughout; he also ensured I received what I needed in an expeditious manner. Food is plated in a high standard as well. On this trip, I ordered hot and sour soup, twice cooked pork, and egg rolls in the hopes that spicier food would help drain my nostrils and rid me of my cold. Two minor gripes: The twice cooked pork wasn't the "BBQ pork" I'm used to in the dish, but the normal pork used in other dishes, such as pork with broccoli. My fault for not asking! The dish was still seasoned well and had an appropriate balance between meat/veggies/sauce. Egg rolls seemed slightly underdone as well. Hot and sour soup was actually that and appears to be actual soup made in the restaurant--not the cheaper stuff you see on most buffet lines. Me and my brothers egg rolls tasted under cooked and cold. My general tso's chicken sauce was almost chalky to the point I couldn't finish it. My brother complained that the skin on his sweet and sour chicken was the only good thing about his plate. I was a former cook and even in my first week i made better fried rice than this, and i burned it. My whole order was a giant waste and would recommend to a raccoon, or a dog with no tongue, giving this anyone would be committing the worst sin known to God. The worst food i have had. read more

It was my time eating here today after driving by almost daily. I have eaten take out and delivery from this restaurant in the past at a family member's house and was not very impressed. The food was average at best, not really something I was looking forward to. When I found out they had a buffet I decided to see what they had to offer. The inside was a very calming atmosphere, it is the best I can describe it. There were other patrons eating here and everyone was very quiet. Even the staff was speaking to us in a whispered tone when they serviced us. Honestly, I enjoyed the calm setting. The buffet is set up like a catering party, limited food dishes in the middle of the restaurant. The food selection was very limited, but a descent amount of their dishes were good. Now here comes the kicker, they had King Crab legs! I was surprised, and they were very tasty. Their servers were very friendly and were on top of their game. Overall I had a great experience. It looks like they only have buffets for lunch on Sundays. Price was not bad at all, especially for getting crab legs. Quality of food is excellent. Most places don't realize that many of their orders are from hotels so don't expect utensils or plates. Our first experience with this restaurant was tonight's meal we had delivered to our daughter's home. The meal arrived to us somewhat late as the delivery driver got lost and ended up on the wrong side of town, but arrived shortly after calling for directions. The food was still warm. Lots of yummy sauce in both the mushroom beef and in the cashew shrimp. The fried rice was ok, putting in the sauce from the entree's helped the rice out a lot! I'm sorry but the food is just awful. I travel a bunch and get the craving for Chinese food quite a bit. I have come to expect the not so great Chinese food as I travel. But this is probably the worst I have ever had. I ordered the pot stickers, bbq ribs and crispy sesame beef. The ribs were very tough and chewy. The flavor was very sweet. The pot stickers were very doughy and chewy. The pot sticker sauce tasted like it was just soy sauce. But the worst was the Sesame Beef. It tasted like bad fish! I've been coming to China Moon for years and now that I live in des moines again I can have my favorite Chinese food! Their fried rice is my FAVORITE but they do every Chinese meal really well. Unfortunately I have to get takeout because of covid right now, but I'm happy to see their adorable interior is exactly the same as it used to be. I love eating inside here, the pink walls, all the cool decor, and I remember them using dry ice to serve you food. They are really nice and aim to please. They put a lot of love into what they do. Its my favorite little Chinese restaurant in the world. Their fried rice has a nice smokey flavor to it and doesn't use any cheap frozen ingredients. Big chunks of moist chicken and green onions and egg - to die for. Make sure to support them now with the corona virus as they seemed slower than usual :( I know I will be. I'm a frequent business traveler and order food to be delivered to my hotel more often than not. Tonight as I looked at the few meager options for delivery in Ankeny, I found China Moon. I don't hold high expectations for ethnic food when I'm not in a big city, but my meal tonight didn't even pass muster for americanized asian food. My order was standard, easy stuff: pot stickers, egg drop soup, and orange chicken. The potstickers were made with a very thick, chewy dough - and while not unflavorful, the flavor was overwhelmed by their chewy massiveness. As well the egg drop soup was reasonably flavored, but was so goopy thick that I could nearly stand my spoon in it. The orange chicken also suffered from thick, heavy breading. Additionally, the sauce looked and smelled good, and lots of chilis were present, but it was weirdly bland with no spice at all. That said, the size of the portions was generous, and the delivery time was incredibly quick. I guess if you're ravenous and need to eat now, but don't have much regard for your tastebuds, that this is a good choice for you. read more

Each time my complete order was ready when expected, always with a friendly and courteous staff at the ready. I would, in particular, like to thank Daniel, one of the owners, for his exceptional skills at being a great restauranteur while proving his great personal service. He was very accommodating and attentive. My food orders were always right on, with the right quantity ,taste, and Chinese ambience. The egg rolls are really delicious as are his soups. I can remember when China Moon, was almost out in the country located on the south side of Ankeny, this little family owned Chinese food spot was almost an island unto itself! Now with Ankeny growing so rapidly China Moon, is pretty much in the middle of town! And that benefits the citizens of Ankeny, cause what we have here is a great restaurant! I love the mixed veggies, and tofu, their sauces have a great flavor and their selections of soups (pho) are fantastic. Every time I have been the staff has been super sweet, whether, you are digging a nicer dinner or just hitting up the lunch buffet. They will always have something for everyone! Placed my order over the phone about 4:30. Was told about 45 mins to 1 hour for delivery. Glad I asked if they accepted credit cards before she hung up! They do but assume cash which was fine! Order was delivered 5:45 but the driver had gotten lost due to my area being do new the gps would not find it. No worries! Driver was super friendly! I even got a calendar with my order for the New Years! Kind of like an adult happy meal prize I guess. Food was warm when it arrived which surprised me because it is frigid cold outside! Sesame chicken was good! They give you a large portion with quite a bit of fried rice. Sui Mai was a little oily but pretty good, especially since it's a little hard to find anywhere. Potstickers were really good, filling was moist, outside was still a little crispy despite this being delivery! Crabrangoon was a bit disappointing it was chewy I need to try it fresh! I literally spit out the chicken from the lo Mein it was probs the worst Chinese I've ever had. The potstickers were okay. The egg rolls and crab rangoons were amazing. We order takeout about once a month and every time the order is messed up. Back in December we ordered 2 orders of sesame chicken. With this you get: rice, egg roll and soup. We ended up getting and PAYING FOR our order of crab rangoon and FOUR orders of sesame chicken that were lacking soups, rice AND egg rolls??? This was at dinner time so they put us down for two free orders of sesame chicken. When we decided to take them up on those two meals they only gave us lunch portions??? RIP OFF. Sounds like someone was trying to line their pockets at Christmastime. Tonight I ordered one order of sesame chicken, an extra soup and an order of crab rangoon. We didn't get our extra soup but thankfully after checking with them, we didn't pay for it. China Moon - - your food is so-so (not a lot to choose from that's actually good [empress chicken is terrible]) but your hot & sour soup is the BEST in Ankeny. Crab Rangoon is also good but I'm starting to think we'll just have to do without Chinese in Ankeny.
