Solid three stars. There's a nice assortment out for lunch--I think they change a few things up daily, as a couple of dishes present today weren't on the line about two weeks ago. Beverages are self-serve; they do have teacups and Asian teabags available. Other dishes available today, but not pictured include veggie mei fun, chicken and broccoli, a crab stick entree, and peanut chicken. Most items I tried were flavorful...I'd avoid the peanut chicken. Chewy mess. But for a buffet, most items are decent. Don't quite understand the low average--if you want customizable dishes, go to Sam's on the south side. If you want fancy, go to PF Chang's. I would say the service can be hit or miss depending on the day or time you come. They have always been polite and made sure our table was cleared, and taken care of if we had questions or wanted something made fresh it it looked like it had been out for a bit. Which brings me to most of the time the flavor of the food is great. The freshness of the food is OK, but truly depends on when you get there for lunch and dinner. After covid, I don't know what happened to this place. This place was a go-to after Sunday Church, and it's one of the worst buffets now. The last few times I came here are awful. This local buffet is a staple here in Ankeny and I, raised in Ankeny, have utilized for years. The food is pretty decent for the price, which is only $8.99 per person on weekday lunch before 3pm-ish and goes up to $11.99 at nights when they roll out higher-priced fare like salmon, roasts, scallops, and fancier sushi. (Drink always included.) With that price, you get access to a decent buffet featuring some typical, some more uncommon fare. All the locals know when it comes to a relatively-cheap, filling, all-you-can-eat place, this is where to come. The fare typically includes all variety of asian cuisine including sushi, salad bar, dessert bar, and ice cream station. Personally, while the selection is fewer items than Des Moines Metro-based Hibachi Grill & Supreme Buffet, the price and food quality is typically better if you compare both with freshly-cooked selections. read more

I don't know if this was because of COVID-19 or to save money, but styrofoam plates and cups and plastic utensils? Really? The food was cold, the broccoli in the chicken and broccoli was mushy, and some of the other dishes eith had no taste or were on the verge of going bad. I don't hold particularly high expectations of Chinese buffets these days, but this one manages to go one or two steps below the others. AVOID! read more

Only ever been here for lunch. It's usually pretty consistent. I like to get there 30 minutes to an hour after opening. That way the sushi is always out. The last time some of the dishes weren't hot for some reason, but that's not normal. Overall this place is usually above average. read more

I'm convinced that the reviews of this place aren't better because people are trying to hide this GEM. I'm sad I didn't try it sooner! The location is convenient with plenty of parking. Staff were friendly and you pay before sitting down (which I prefer because then you can enjoy your food and leave whenever you're ready). Normal buffet prices. The options were extensive and included several kid friendly/picky-friend friendly dishes to accommodate all. I was pleased with absolutely everything I put on my plate. Everything was hot and fresh! On the day we went, there was no wonton soup on the buffet which is one of my favorite things so that made me sad but I imagine it's just a rotating dish for them. Two words.... Chinese Buffet. Enough said. But seriously, this place is alright. It has quite a selection, if you go during "prime" hours for lunch/dinner the food is hot and generally filled. They offer a sushi bar, hot bar, cold bar and "hard-serve" ice cream. I would not recommend going to this place mid-afternoon or 1-2 hours before closing. The dishes are OK - the prices are a bit high. Overall, if you are in the mood and in the area, it's not terrible as long as you have low expectation for this place. Now if you want quality Chinese food in the Ankeny area, check out Lucky Bamboo which is almost across the street from China Buffet, the food there is much better but not a buffet. Just make sure to have cash or visit an ATM before going, because they do not take credit card. read more

Comparing to other Chinese buffets, this was great. Just ate there last week, early March 2021. Food was hot and tasty and price was good.

Don't go there. DON'T EAT HERE IF YOU HAVE AN ALLERGY! I had to call the health department. The food was good at best, I went here for lunch with my children went to grab dessert some pudding looking thing, took a bite and was surprised it had nuts in it. I spit it out, Took the rest away from my daughter. I actually went back to the tray to check and if it had a warning sign or something. Nope, so I got a waitress and asked her what type of nuts were in the pudding. She said none, nothing and kept walking away. I had to follow her around to be able to speak to her. Finally after I told her I wanted a manager she said "there's not nuts in the pudding but there's almond cookies in the pudding." Then I told her I wanted to speak to her manager she response? "I don't speak English" and she walks away getting the manager. Then I'm told by the manager that it's my fault that I ate the pudding because I should have informed them ahead of time that I had an allergy to nuts and they could have pointed out what not to eat. Um how exactly you pay first before you even sit down and get your own drinks. I told them there should minimally be a sign saying there's nuts in something, he told "That's not possible and eat something else" I was not told sorry, I was offered a refund, I was dismissed when I tried to speak to them. I ended up leaving and calling the health department and I intend of following up with them. read more

I probably go here a couple times a month, with a guy I work with, for lunch. It's a pretty good place to go when you don't want to settle on one thing to eat. The prices are pretty good and the place is usually clean. The staff is friendly and pretty quick to clear away dirty plates. I've also brought the family here a couple times as well. The mini-yelper likes it because the usually have some type of pizza out so she can have that if she's not up for the noodles she likes.
