This is my favorite place to get soup when we are feeling blah. I know the lady who answers the phone thinks I am nuts but we get quarts of the hot and sour, wonton egg drop and house special soup and lots of extra orders of the crispy noodles for the soup. This is your average take-out Chinese place! You walk in, order, pay, wait for your food and go! There are places to sit and dine-in but I noticed that the majority of their customers were take-outs. I did like the fact that they were open later than most places around the area. They deliver as well! The service was fine and the food was fast and piping hot! If I could give them half stars then I would definitely go with 3-1/2 stars. The Food here is good! But I wouldn't go out of my way just to come here. If I were in the area and it was late night, then this would definitely be an option! The Food: 3 Flavors Chicken (General's, Sweet & Sour, Chicken & Broccoli) - 3/5 *The General's Chicken wasn't bad at all. The best in town though? No. (That's what is stated on their menu. If I could give a negative star right now, I would. My boyfriend was so sick from their trash ass lo mein that taste really good, but was absolutely cursed by the devil himself. He was sick for over two weeks on the toilet with tears in his eyes and misery for days. Y'all but for real though, they just had an inspection and it was SO BAD. Please do not go to this place. I'm in Des Moines for the first time and had all these places I wanted to try but freakishly enough they were all closed. Then a freak rainstorm came and I just got lazy and decided to order in. So my choices were pizza, pizza, pizza , and this place. My hotel front desk said the portions are large, it comes hot and stays hot, and it's about 50 minutes from order time to delivery. All true! For some reason I completely forgot there was a Chinese fast-food restaurant here, I'm glad this suggestion popped up on my screen when I was looking for a place to eat. At first I was surprised with the location because Tsing Tsao is right down the street a few blocks, and they are also a Chinese fast-food restaurant. This creates some serious competition between the two I would assume. This is an order-at-the-counter eatery, so walk up to the counter to order and they will bring your order to your table. There was only a couple of people eating in, because a fast-food eatery, there were many many many people coming in to order out or picking up their order they ordered on the phone. We were one of the few people who wanted to enjoy the full experience of eating in. We ordered the House Special fried rice and the Shrimp in Lobster sauce, with an order of Chicken Wings for an appetizer. The fried chicken wings were okay, not the best I've had, but not bad. The House Special fried rice was very good! Lots of chicken, pork, and shrimp! Great flavors and a good amount! The Shrimp in Lobster sauce was great! Great flavors, texture, and they did not skimp on the shrimp, there was a good size amount! I would definitely order food from here again! The food was ready very quick and the prices are great! You receive rather large portions but you don't receive the typical side dishes during the dinner hour. You have to order the soup, spring rolls separate. In addition if you want fried rice other than white rice there is an additional charge. We ordered the beef & broccoli, the brown sauce was rather flavorful and nice ratio of meat to broccoli. Cashew chicken had plenty of cashews. Lot of chicken, however you need to be very careful we found bones in the chicken in this dish and in the chicken lo mein! We got takeout for Sunday lunch when we were in the neighborhood. I had a craving for egg drop soup, and a quart was a fantastic item to be able to order. It really hit the spot. I agree with the other reviews, China House has some of the best Chinese food I have had in Des Moines! I have only had delivery from China House and it is usually extremely quick. The tip when ordering is to look at their online menu and order with the numbers. I haven't had any issues with incorrect orders since ordering this way. When I ordered the food from my hotel room the lady was very short and not very pleasant. I ordered my food and told them no onions. When the food arrived it had onions in it. When I called to try to get it right she argued with me on my order and told me " All I get is sorry!" So I told her she didn't have to worry about me calling back in the future. Why wife and I made our first carry out trip here tonight and it was AMAZING!! We were crazy Sesame Chicken and General Taso Chicken and neither disappointed! In fact, we have been let down in the Sesame Chicken department by so many other Chinese places around town. This Sesame Chicken is what dreams are made of! The egg rolls were fresh and so tasty! The rice was sticky yet not dry and ate perfect with chopsticks. This is our new go to place! In fact we called in 30 min before close and our food was ready and fresh in the 10 min promised. I really miss this place since I moved off of the east side of DeMo. I haven't found anything better on my new side of town that compairs. I think these guys are the best Chinese is town and their General Tso is the best in town. Crispy pieces of chicken in a tasty brown sticky sauce with just the right amount of broccoli. It is usually enough for two meals. I've tried most item of the menu and I personally stick with chicken dishes. IWith one exception, their Boneless spare ribs are the bomb some times I just order them with a side of rice. This was the "go to place" for my mom to get her quart of hot and sour soup! Delish! While this is a little "hole in the wall" Chinese restaurant, their food is delicious and we've tried quite a variety; Sweet & Sour Chicken, Steam & Fried Dumplings, Chicken with Pea Pods, Chicken with Broccoli, Mongolian Chicken, Chicken with Curry Sauce and Chicken with Garlic Sauce. The portions are quite large, especially compared to the price! China House delivers their own orders and their orders are correct and complete with the specified sides and sauces. If a man takes your order, he is kind and understands. If a woman takes your order, she is hard to understand and can appear rude. In ordering many times from this business, I believe it is somewhat difficult for her to speak and have others understand and she gets frustrated which can appear rude. She really is trying and we've dealt with her many times. They are also extremely busy with a huge carry out and delivery business; I have yet to call and not be asked to hold.
