    California Roll

Stopped by this place for a quick bite before attending a show at the Civic Center. We walked in the place was quiet inside, but there were 3 people at the sushi bar and we waited and no one greeted us for several minutes before I spoke up and asked if they were open. A lady swung around from the bar and said "oh I didn't see you." Turns out she was the hostess. Food was ok, a bit pricey in my option. We ordered very basic rolls California and shrimp tempura rolls those were $6 and $9. I was with my teen daughter and she only like California rolls. So it was fine. I've had better sushi ironically in Ankeny. For a quick bite this was fine- but I wasn't overwhelmed by it. Service was ok. Food came out fast but was well paced with the appetizer we ordered first. However our server wasn't overly friendly and seemed like she didn't want to be there at all.

For the Midwest this is a great sushi place!! Service was excellent and prices are fair for sure! Nice atmosphere and the rolls are large and delicious! The spicy edamame was excellent and the crab Rangoon was a great appetizer! Definitely a must hit in downtown Des Moines.

Late Saturday lunch, only a couple of tables were occupied, so service was very fast. Tempura appetizer was good, shumai was room temperature, maybe it was already sitting out? The rolls were delicious, we liked the crazy roll better than the Italian stallion. Both rolls were larger in size than I'm used to.

Great drinks and outstanding service. They always treat us well here. Recommend sitting at the bar for a wonderful experience.

I was craving some sushi and wanted to try this place since I see it all of the time. I went in on a Thursday, early evening and no one else was there yet. The mood inside was nice, it was a little dark but since I sat by the window I was able to get additional light. The server was great, she was very attentive and ensured I always had water in my glass. The food was delivered to my table within 10 minutes. I tried a starter and two sushi rolls, all were delicious. They do have a happy hour special that includes sushi rolls! Definitely check them out if you're in the area. 5/5

This was the solice and nourishment I needed while traveling solo for a conference. I was staying nearby at the Savery (highly recommend), and wandered into W-Tao after leaving a foodie hotspot nearby that was just way to loud for me that night. If plans don't work out, I feel like you can't really go wrong with fancy sushi. (Well, you can go wrong with sushi, but that's a review for another time). I could tell this was gonna be quality sushi, and W-Tao left me pleasantly pleased with the quality of food, the service, and the ambiance was busy but cheery, calm and inviting. The employees were extremely attentive. If it wasn't your server filling your glass, someone else was. The team worked together very well to keep service flowing. I noticed a lot of young diners. Possibly college-age, young professionals. I felt right at home and even had a little conversation with my neighbors about their awesome pickings. A check in on Yelp rewarded me with free edamame! I also ordered a couple of rolls. They were huge! Irish Temple Roll ($17) - tuna, salmon, white tuna, snow crab, asparagus & cilantro wrapped in soy nori w. avocado, jalapeño, tobiko, scallion, crunch & sweet spicy sauce. The Irish roll was literally amazing. I LOVE cilantro and to be able to enjoy white tuna, crab, avocado, cilantro, all these things all together. Yum. The avocado was so smooth, the jalapeno added a little heat. I took some off. Surf and Turf Roll ($17.60) - spicy tuna, salmon tempura, cream cheese, lettuce & asparagus wrapped in soy nori w. seared sichimi NY Strip, deep-fried potato , scallion, tobiko, unagi sauce & spicy miso sauce. This was a pretty good roll. I am typically not one to get two speciality rolls but the NY strip and potatoes were speaking to this Midwesterners heart. I'll admit, the chunky, rare, cold beef on top of the pieces was tough to chew through but it was delicious. I loved the fried potato. A very unique roll. After packing away my leftovers, I also ordered a small dish of green tea ice cream. This was something I enjoyed in Lincoln at a haunt that's long closed so I decided to treat myself. It's a wonderful as I remember. Highly recommend W-Tao!

Had few things, and reasons to find this place 3 stars instead of 5. The place is cold, they have space heaters but still had to keep coat on. Spicy edamame portion seemed small. Not a fan of the seaweed salad having lettuce underneath it. I liked them them having 3-4 vegan/vegetarian sushi options on the menu. I gave the restaurant 3 out of five, I'll go again if I'm nearby but not making a trip

One of the best sushi places I've tried downtown! Their specialty rolls are very filling (I felt pretty satisfied after a miso soup + the entire roll) and tastes pretty fresh. The service was very nice and speedy too. I definitely recommend it if you're in a sushi mood!

Service was quick and attentive, vibe was great and fun. Food was outstanding as well. Although it's a little pricey, my girlfriend and I really enjoyed celebrating our anniversary here.

We try one new restaurant each month just to keep things fresh, so this time I suggested Fawn's. I'm really glad we did. I had heard so many great things about the food so I was excited to try it. When I saw the menu, though, I was a little nervous because they serve Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Laotian food. In my experience, restaurants that try to serve all kinds of Asian food rarely do one or all of them well. I ordered Pad Thai and my husband got Evil Jungle Prince. I was very pleased. It was the best Pad Thai I've ever eaten. It was SO good! My husband loved his dish, too. It had chicken and vegetables with a spicy sauce made with red curry and coconut milk. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were huge. We each got two meals out of our dinners. I love it when that happens. The place isn't fancy. It's in a small strip mall and doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside it's very clean and well-kept. There's not much for ambience besides two flat screen TVs. It doesn't matter because it's the food that really stands out. The service was excellent, too. My husband had his iced tea refilled twice without even asking. Great affordable food and good service. What more can you ask for? If you love Asian food, give them a try. I can't wait to go back and try more of their dishes.

Char Kueh Teow This dish stood out immediately which has a smoky wok hei flavor (the "breath of the wok") coated the flat rice noodles, giving them that deep caramelized edge that's hard to find outside of Malaysia. The prawns were plump and juicy, and the mix of soy, garlic, and chili gave just the right balance of savory and spicy. Fresh cucumbers and pickled vegetables on the side added a refreshing crunch, making each bite balanced and addictive. Laksa Rich, creamy, and fragrant, the laksa broth was a highlight. The curry coconut base carried layers of spice without being overwhelming, and every sip warmed you from the inside out. The noodles were cooked just right, with toppings that tied it together from seafood to herbs. It's the kind of bowl that makes you pause between spoonfuls just to savor the aroma. Satay The chicken satay had a lovely turmeric and lemongrass marinade, grilled to a slight char that locked in the smoky flavor. Tender on the inside with crispy edges, it paired perfectly with the bold, nutty, and slightly spicy peanut dipping sauce. The cucumber slices on the side helped cut through the richness, just like you'd get back at a hawker stall in Malaysia. Overall Hawker Kitchen is a gem for anyone looking for authentic Malaysian comfort food in Des Moines. Portions are generous, flavors are bold and true to their roots, and the variety on the menu makes it worth repeat visits. If you're new to Malaysian cuisine, start with the satay and char kueh teow; if you're a fan already, the laksa will feel like home.

Potstickers were just okay. The dipping sauce didn't do them any favors--this felt like an easy upgrade they're missing. Imperial Egg Rolls were the biggest letdown. At $17 for three, I expected something memorable...they just weren't. Pad Thai landed squarely in "average." Grilled Honey Roast Chicken Egg Noodles was a mixed bag. The chicken itself was delicious, but the noodles were pretty bland--and oddly, they didn't really work together. Royal Fried Rice was a win. The combo of BBQ pork, sweet sausage, and shrimp came together really well. Seafood Noodle dish was unfortunately pretty bland. There is limited table service, as many amenities are self-serve. As an Asian, this was great: let me eat in peace :D. Nonetheless, the employees were pleasant and came to check on us to clear our table. We seldom dine at mixed/fusion Thai in California, so expectations were low upon seeing the menu. They have a small menu, but enough varieties for everyone. We ordered Khao poon with tofu, after-school fried rice (what we call pineapple fried rice), and eggrolls (not pictured). The soup was great: enough spiced, fragrance, and heat -- added extra chili flakes for my preference. However, the only disappointment was the tofu, as they were not cooked in the broth, simply added prior to serving. Would have loved them lightly fried for texture and flavor. Then again, it is the Midwest, so I didn't expect many tofu lovers for them to go through the trouble. Still rate it 5/5. The fried rice was delicious: Requested level 3 spiciness, which was too spicy for my uncle, but he managed to enjoy it. He would order it again, but at level 2 spiciness. The dumplings had a great texture, and while the filling was bland, the dipping sauce made up for it and was delicious and complemented the dish perfectly. The Lao sausage was sweet and garlicky, but the sticky rice was a little dry. The Pad Thai was just how I like it with fresh vegetables and not overly saucy. Parking is hard to find, and it is on a busy street. So plan accordingly. It took us about 15 minutes to find decent parking that was half a block away. We didn't mind the walking, but we thought there would be a designated parking lot. But there is not unfortunately.
