Stopped for lunch in their new location and it was great! The lunch special is a very good deal: $10 gets you a soda and a piece of pizza and either a second piece of pizza or a salad. We opted to go for the salads. I had some hot honey dressing on the side and it was awesome! There were six or seven choices of slices of pizza and I chose one that had bacon and hot honey and again it was awesome! The crust is thin. Friend ordered a sausage and liked it. If our hubbies had been along, they would probably want to order the two pieces of pizza with their sodas. The waitress was friendly and helpful. The interior is a lot of fun. Go there you'll like it. PS. Parking lot is great to have.
Lots of hype and big build up. I stopped in just for a drink. Heard great things. Sat at the bar. The bartender could not have been more disinterested in serving me. Drink was so bad I couldn't finish it. No mugs! Disappointing visit. Loved the decor.
My husband and I hadn't been to Fong's for probably 15 years and we couldn't remember if we enjoyed their pizza the last time we went so we thought we'd try them again. We were excited about their new location in the old Peace Tree Brewing location. Unfortunately, we thought their food was boring and underwhelming. We got an East 4th Street Special pizza and it just tasted like there was nothing special about it. My brother-in-law has pizza nights at his house every so often where everyone brings their own toppings and we make pizzas at his house. This pizza reminded me a lot of that. It had a homemade taste. Definitely not restaurant quality. I think it was the crust. It was just very bland and boring. The toppings were also nothing special like what we love at other pizza places. We always get the same toppings on our pizza wherever we go just for the sake of comparison and other places have done it better. It's too bad because the outdoor patio is great and the inside looks really fun. They did a great job redecorating it to fit the Fong's Asian theme. You can't see any traces of Peace Tree's former presence there. I don't see any need to come back when there are so many other great pizza places in town.

We had the opportunity to do so with our son, daughter-in-law and grandson and enjoyed the experience. Pizza is generally a good value for a family and on that note, Fong's does well - as we each had a beer and still kept our total bill just under $22/person. Next on the above average list was the food itself, as other than a blackended spot on each pizza (a hot spot in the ovens?), the food was good. Where I found Fong's to be no better than average though is with the atmosphere and service. Starting with crowded and awkward seating spaces inside and then having to wait for water glass refills and other requests. For our meal, we started with an order of Thai Sticks, which other than the one spot that was charred, this was the favorite part of my meal. The peanut sauce, bacon and honey made this sweet, savory and delicious! We then ordered 2 small pizzas to share - a General Tso's Chicken (see picture) and a Loaded Potato with Garlic Butter (see picture). Each was burned black in one spot, but the rest of each pizza tasted good and although there was more bare crust around the circumference than I prefer, the center portion was good enough to make up for that. This was my first time in Fong's new location and it is beautiful and much better suited for their volume. Their food is great as always. We enjoyed some cocktails this time as well as some of their apps, all of which were great. The star of the show was definitely the Thai chicken pizza which had an amazing peanut sauce on it. Love coming to Fong's and enjoying their unique fusion!
I was in town for only 24 hours and someone told me to go to Fong's pizza. I am so glad they did and that they recommended it because this is one of the most different pizza experiences that I have ever had! It's Asian infused pizza, plus their cocktails are Tiki style. So it's like a two in one win! The Decor is really cool as well. It's half Asian and half tiki vibe. I loved it and I have never seen anything like that! Our bartender/waitress was amazing! Not only did she have great customer service, but she was super funny and really entertaining as well! We ordered the crab Rangoon pizza, and some other pizza that I can't remember. Also, the tiki cocktail that comes in the kitty and the one in the peacock and both were super delicious! We also ordered another cocktail that we didn't realize was a shot and when they give it to you they give you a helmet to wear while you do the shot. I thought that was so unique and so funny! I definitely want to come back here! This place is a must if you are ever in Des Moines, Iowa!
Overall the pepperoni pizza was good but I got the November special and it wasn't anything to write home about. If you're interested in it just get the small. Seems like this is a fusion restaurant but mainly does pizza. Had to wait longer than expected. Not busy when I walked in.
We ate here once years ago and it made such an impression on us that we had to drive a little out of our way to stop for lunch on our way home from Minnesota. I knew before we walked in that I was getting that crab Rangoon pizza! My husband got the meats pizza. Both were just as we remembered. Service was fine, nothing to write home about, but the decor is fun and lively. A lot of Asian flare reflecting their fusion menu. Wish we could franchise this back home in Tulsa!
Decent pizza from a midwestern state being from the tri-state area on the east coast. Walked in and were able to sit right away. Waitress was friendly and answered our questions. The inside had Asian flare and the tiki bar was cool. The crab Rangoon pizza is rated their best pizza but I preferred their honey and garlic pizza. Their cheese sticks were also an interesting take on mozzarella sticks.
The crab ragoon pizza was delicious. The big grove ipa was excellent. I recommend this place. I'll be returning soon
There is a reason people flock to Fong's, especially late at night. But, if you are looking to compare Fong's to pizza in NYC, you're totally missing the plot. Sure, I could complain about the slightly uneven distribution of peas on my orange chicken pizza, but I'm the one who sought out Chinese-Italian fusion. The crab Rangoon pizza is notorious and the orange chicken pizza is spicy and delicious. If you're looking for an evening where the long term consequences of your actions are irrelevant, Fong's is the perfect place for a late night dinner.
A very well laid out dining experience. I love the cultural aspects of this. A wide variety of appetizers and pizzas. Parking is a little tight if it depending on whether it's busy or not but well worth the wait if you need to little bit small but dining area. If you like that Asian cultural look, the ambience is perfect. The smaller pizza might not be enough for one person. I almost decided to order three pizzas one for each of us and one of us to share..
This is an amaaaaazzzing spot. They have my two favorite things, pizza and tiki drinks. You will find a decent-sized private parking lot here and a walk-up pick-up window for people who placed to-go orders online. There is also free street parking available. There is a decent-sized dining area and a very nice outdoor patio as well. It was a nice day during my visit, so I sat on the patio. The staff there was very friendly. Their menu has traditional pizzas such as sausage, pepperoni, and meatzilla. They also have some unique Asian inspired creations like Tai Chicken, Mac and Cheese, General Tso's Chicken, Iowan, Crab Ragoon, and Korean Beef Chicken pizzas. They also have soups and salads, and Chinese food entrees like Beef and Broccoli, Stir-Fry Chicken, Sesame Chicken, Orange Chicken, and Chili Garlic Shrimp. And yes, they have some of the best tiki drinks and mocktails around. I ordered a Painkiller and a Waving Cat to go with my Bang Bang Chicken Pizza. It took them about 12 minutes to prepare my pie. It was fresh and hot. It was also so good. I have never had a pizza like that before. It was very flavorful and tasty. It was so good, I even forgot to take a picture of it because I just jumped right in. My drinks came out much sooner, and they were also really, really good. The staff there was very friendly and attentive. My service was first class. I am so glad I found this spot and got to experience it. I highly recommend this place, and I definitely will be back very soon. read more

My wife and I went midday Tuesday and had two different views of Fong's. Basically, I liked my pizza choices and she didn't like hers. We both took advantage of the lunch pizza slice special. I thought my Polynesian pizza was good, and my full pie of Korean Beef pizza was a great concept that delivered admirably. She got the Korean Chicken slice which was the monthly special which I thought was good. Then came her full Crab Rangoon pizza. I don't eat Crab Rangoon, so I abstained. But her reaction to the taste was poor. We're not the couple that leaves potential leftovers on the table, but suffice to say that the Crab Rangoon pizza was left almost in its entirety at the restaurant. Back to me, I was impressed by their fusion concepts and would be interested to try their traditional Asian dishes in their original form sans pizza dough. read more

The pizza tasted like Chuck E. Cheese pizza, this is not a compliment. The cheese sticks were tasty but the service was horrible. Had to get up six times to ask for what we needed. Party of four. While I was still eating she asked if I was ready for check we said no and she can wan crossed it anyway. Waitress was rude and may as well have said to get out. She pushed us to finish and asked several times for us to pay. We were in town for a week and wanted to check it out since it was recommended. This was a straight disappointment and this lady needs some waitress etiquette k and customer service tips. I highly do not recommend. read more

A colleague and I were recommended this place by some locals and we went for a casual dinner during a recent business trip- what a treat! This place is such a cool mashup between Asian food and flavors and pizza. We loved everything we tried and our server was extremely helpful and attentive. read more

Fongs has a new location and definitely much bigger and open than the previous. Great to see a local business take over the old building! Service was nice. I definitely think this place is better in the evening for their happy hour and late night snacks! read more
I had been to the old downtown location and Ankeny location previously, but wanted to check out the new place. Parking was ok to the side gravel lot. The restaurant more spacious and has more natural light coming in. We were quickly seated and got our order in right away. We ordered the crab Rangoon pizza and orange chicken pizza. Both were good, but my favorite was the orange chicken. Our server was very attentive and offered honey and other sauces which I appreciated. Pretty good value for the quality of pizza. read more

Fongs is a must visit when in Des Moine. They have classic as well as the coolest Asian pizzas. The service was great, the pizza came out quickly, and the drinks were amazing and dangerously smooth! Get the margarita you can't go wrong with it! read more

All the rave and it was just OK to me. Had to try the "Legendary Crab Rangoon Pizza" and the sauce was too much for me. Couldn't really taste anything but the sauce. The Mac & Cheese pizza was actually better if you like Mac and cheese and we love Mac and cheese. The place was also just OK. A regular chinese looking restaurant with asian decorations that serves pizza. Our server Cadin was probably the best part of the dinner. 3.5 on food, 2 on the restaurant's decoration but 4 stars for service. I would check it out if you love pizza and chinese food fusion. And quite a unique pizza you can't get anywhere else. read more

Lucked out with parking as their gravel lot was nearly full. The crab Rangoon pizza was just ok. The Asiago cheese overpowered everything including the sweet Thai chili sauce on it. It really didn't remind me of eating crab Rangoons. It's missing the creaminess and mild cheesy flavor of Philadelphia cream cheese. Generous amount of fried wonton skins. I could hardly taste the fake crab which was a scant amount. $16 for a 10" pie is way too much. The tiki drinks were strong but my painkiller tasted off; it had a little onion flavor to it. This place lives off novelty fusion pizzas and its kitschy decor but their signature pizza was underwhelming. They could use more Polynesian decorations if they're serving tiki drinks. Service was standard. FYI the daily specials on their prior menus is gone now. Happy hour is from 3-6 pm, M-F. Not sure if the pizza slice is of your choice. read more

I travel covering my territory as the Account Manager and had seen this restaurant as an option before while in Des Moines. Today was the day to give this place a try. What a concept right? Asian inspired pizza options, wait, that's two cultures clashing, this mustn't work at all. Wrong, it was freaking fantastic, I ordered the General Tso's Chicken pizza and loved everything about it. Water chestnut slices and the little baby corn you see in stir fry along with bell peppers and the fried chicken bites. This was great with the cheese and crust thrown in. I don't even know where to begin with the raspberry cheesecake egg rolls with a chocolate dipping sauce. I may be back tomorrow night for dinner trying the Crab Rangoon pizza. read more

Saw this place on tik tok reels about Des Moines Iowa. I had to check it out due to the uniqueness of their pizza. I had the waving kitty drink which was amazing. The crab Rangoon was ok. It was worth a try but I probably won't get it again. Next time, I'll try the garlic honey pizza based on local recommendations. read more
Really enjoyed Fong's. I went in with a sole purpose of getting the Crab Rangoon Pizza. I got it and it was exactly what I hoped it would be. Crispy and sweet and savory and crispy again. I recommend this! There is also so many other pizzas on their menu. I saw some at the restaurant and now I want them also. read more
We got into Des Moines late in the evening on a Thursday night and immediately got carry out from Fong's! In my research of Des Moines, this was somewhere people really recommended for a quirky little meal and that's exactly how I'd describe Fong's! This used to be a Chinese restaurant, one of the oldest in all of Des Moines and when that restaurant closed and new owners finally came in and opened up Fong's Pizza, they decided to keep all the original decor and incorporate this identity into the menu. Fong's Pizza is half pizza restaurant and half tiki bar so what you have now is what properly looks like the inside of a Chinese restaurant, just with a bar and a very unique menu of food and drink! What everyone talks about in relation to the food is the crab rangoon pizza. I love crab rangoon and I love pizza, so I knew I had to try it. The result? It really did taste like crab rangoon! I would say that the novelty of this restaurant is a large part of the appeal and that the food, overall, isn't all that great. The pizzas aren't the best quality, they don't reheat well either if you're eating leftovers, and generally they have a really sad looking air about them with their sad pizza dough, pale, thin crusts. We also got the mac and cheese pizza (similar pizza appearance), cauliflower wings (delicious and overpoweringly sauced/sweet), Chinese cheese sticks (mozzarella sticks in spring roll wrappers - mozz was delish, spring roll wrappers were a little too thick, bready, and tough), and ended with the raspberry cheesecake egg rolls (perfect, no notes!). So as you can see, the food was relatively hit or miss, but overall we appreciated the experience of trying out the menu at Fong's and trying out one of the more iconic restaurants in this city. If you're interested in good food, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this spot, but if you're looking for a glimpse into Des Moines culture, definitely check it out! read more

I really wish I could get this pizza back home! You've got to try this Asian fusion pizza--trust me, it won't disappoint! If you love crab Rangoon, you're gonna love this!! The service is solid, and the vibe is super chill. I'm craving this pizza so much right now! I finished it all by myself, so it is a perfect size. You'll leave full. read more
Pizza was perfect size and super tasty. Had the crab Rangoon just because is was something different it did not disappoint. Paired it the kitty drink and I'm taking home the cat mug. Alex was my server she was spot on! She check on me, to see if I needed anything and gave recommendation. Thanks Alex! Ambiance was perfect.
