My boss and I went out to lunch today. He'd picked 7 Stone with a friend of his and his friend's kids. I was just along for the ride... Lol I took at look at their menu online and it's not a big menu... Build your own 7-Stone crust (thick) and artisan crust (thin) along with six different specialty pizzas. Big into appetizers? Don't plan on it here. They have cheesebread and side salads. They offer a couple different items for lunch specials (Wednesday - Friday 11am to 2pm)...toasted hoagies and a half pizza combo. It's order and pay at the counter. Pepsi self serve fountain drinks. Plates, utensils, napkins, and pizza spatulas are beside the fountain drink station. Parmesan and red pepper are on the tables. Seat yourself. The seating is a combination of booths and low top tables and chairs. There's a small counter with seating as well. The business itself is in a strip so there is lots of parking available. There was one gal behind the counter taking orders as well as cooking and serving pizzas. Two younger ladies came in a bit later, but it was hard to tell if they were actual staff or daughters there to hang out with their mom (or maybe both). Staff was friendly enough. Our party ordered: 1x large House7 on 7-Stone crust 1x large buffalo chicken on artisan crust 2x small pepperoni pizzas on artisan crust 1x large cheesebread 1x side salad 7x fountain drinks It was a short wait for everything to get cooked and served. The thicker 7 Stone crust takes about 20 min. The artisan...probably half that. The 7 Stone crust vaguely reminds me of when Pizza Hut still cooked in cast iron. The toasted crust with cheese burnt like little vertical stalagmite (that's the cave formations that form from the floor up)... That was something neat to see. I haven't had a crust like that in a long time. The artisan crust is thinner of course, but perfect for folding. You like a little char? This gives you that in some bubbling aound the edges, but the bottom of the pizza crust is not burnt. I really enjoyed the buffalo chicken pizza! I'm not sure what it was but for me there was something off about the red sauce... It wasn't "bad" but just tasted off. At first I thought it might be a residual taste from the black olives from the House7, but the red sauce on the pepperoni pizzas had the same taste. Maybe it was the plum tomatos they use v. roma or another more traditional variety? Bang for the buck... To me it seemed a little pricey. $22 for a small cheese pizza on 7-Stone. $20 for a small cheese on artisan. $33 for a large specialty on 7-Stone. $31 for a large speciality pizza on artisan. But that might just be me... The company was buying for the two of us today so... The cost is sort of irrelevant outside of mentioning the noted pricing in general. When the company is buying I really don't care. But I'm kind of glad they were paying for it... Lol But no one walked away hungry that's for sure...! And the leftovers I took home will get eaten as long as it warms up anywhere near the same (follow up edit: it did). This is a tough one for me... It's kind of like Gusto. I had a ton of friends who loved the place. I just never cared for it. And there was no particular reason... Is this some place I would return to? Maybe if invited again... Stopped for lunch during spring break with three little kids. I was disappointed there wasn't some kind of lunch special. We easily found seats and ordered two large pizzas. We got three sodas and water for the kids. Our bill was $60. The person who took our order wanted to make sure we knew that we were ordering a lot of pizza and ask how many people we had coming. That was very nice of her. The ingredients tasted really fresh, and the crust was tasty in the wood fire oven. I can't believe I have slept on this place this long. Super convenient from where I live. We walked in. It's counter service. We got up to the counter. We were clueless. The young gal at the counter could tell. She asked us if it was our first time. She very patiently explained the menu. She also explained that it was not extra to add items to the "set pizzas" She offered us to do two different ones. We asked her what was her favorite. We ended up going half vodka and added sausage (her suggestions) and the other half taco. The slices are huge! The taco was one of the best I have had in a long time. The vodka has peas on it. I questioned this. We loved it. The peas have a nice pip and a little sweetness. The staff was very friendly. They delivered the pizza to our table. On th way out you go back to the counter to pay. It is self services as far as pop/water/dishes and silverware. There was parmasean and crushed red peppers on the table. The pop and water is ok with me being that way. I would have liked the dishes and silverware delivered, but that is personal preference. Would definitely go back. SERVICE: PLEASE KNOW THAT 7 STONE DOES NOT BAKE PIZZAS IN THE ORDER RECEIVED. We were six people (3 couples) ordering 3 large artisan pizzas and eating there. Two pizzas came within 10 minutes. The third was not received within 20 minutes so I went back to the counter and inquired. It was sitting in a rack and had not even been placed in the oven. I asked why and was given some song and dance about the three were not reported as being together in a group. Silly me, I didn't know I was supposed to report that my order was with the other two. IF YOU EAT IN AT 7 STONE PIZZA BE SURE TO EXPLICITLY TELL THEM IF YOU HAVE A GROUP AND ORDER MORE THAN ONE PIZZA. I had ordered second and the first and third orders were promptly processed and baked. Why mine was set aside on a rack for some reason I do not know. We got our pizza 20 minutes after the other two were received and the other couples were almost done with their pizzas. We will eat the pizza tomorrow at home. In defense of the place, a lady came to our table and apologized. She offered to give us a gift certificate. I said I appreciated the apology and didn't want another pizza at some other time and declined the gift certificate. An apology was enough. FOOD: The pizza was delicious but would have been better hot out of the oven rather than the next day at home. AMBIANCE: Ambiance is OK but be prepared for a heavy dose of smokiness. The crust was well done but not burnt, sauce had great flavor, and great portions of cheese and toppings. And the pizza was a great temperature when it was delivered to our table. I really didn't want to even write a review after eating here because I was pretty disappointed. The reviews seem very mixed on Yelp, so I thought I'd write about my experience. The service (6/10): This place is super casual and definitely wasn't anything like I was expecting. You order your food at the counter where people are also picking up their takeout orders and then you just sit wherever you want and they'll scream out your name when it's done. You also self serve yourself for everything but still expected to tip. It's also very noisy in there between the kids running around and kitchens pots and pans banging around in the background so it wasn't very enjoyable to sit inside for roughly 45 minutes. The food (6.5/10): First off, get the cheese bread because it's actually amazing. Cheese bread itself gets a 8.2 and would come here simply for just that. It's crispy and cheesy and has a nice blend of herbs and spices that gives it a dynamic flavor profile. The pizza however gets a rookie 6.0 because the pizza was rookie itself. The conception of the pizza has everything you'd want, brick oven, no flop, crispy, air bubbles, however not airy because it's pretty dense. This is where things go down hill because the taste was pretty bad. The sauce was more on the bitter side and on top of the pizza so it's the flavor you get with every bite. The crust also tasted pretty bad even though it had the structure of a crust I'd typically love. Overall(6/10): I'd suggest coming for the cheese bread, I'm sure the stone style crust is better as well since it looked similar to the cheese breads crust which was crunchy and airy. Also some pizzagate going on here with none of the slices of my pizza being the same size. Maybe they inherited their pizza skills from Chuck-e-cheese? read more

My wife and I (both retired) selected this pizzaria on a Friday evening hoping we would not have to contend with a date night crowd. We were there early enough that the crowd arrived as we were checking out. We loved the brick oven pizza. Arguably "Des Moines Best Pizza"!!! We are officially blown away. Delicious brick oven pizza, bubbly, slightly charred crust.. We tried a cheese and the House 7 which is loaded with veggies and Grazianos Sausage ... Yumm!! While eating we watched several deep dish pizzas roll out and are excited to come back. I was told 30 mins, showed up exactly 30 mins and it was ready and waiting. Paid via Apple Pay (nice they support it). In and out no problems. Pizza was great! Did the thin crust, perfectly cooked. This place is one of the best in the metro in my humble opinion. I've dined in a few times and taken carry out once. Dining in allows you to enjoy watching the pizza making process, while allowing you to enjoy a beer, wine or pop plus catch a football game if you'd like. The menu offers 2 types of crust. I always go with the thicker crust because it reminds me of the crust of Pizza Hut circa 1990, that of my childhood dreams. It is buttery, thick and has the perfect crunch. Ooh, how have we lived near this place for years and not tried it until this week? Delicious, sinful, cheesy deep dish and perfect thin crust options. The young adults that waited in us when we signed in were friendly and prompt. And they have beer (local beer to boot; double points). We tried the cheesy bread appetizer which is huge- a small pizza sized bread. A deep dish vodka pie (yum, yum, yum), Grazianos Italian sausage thin crust (I so appreciate they use locally made sausage), a veggie lovers thin crust, and taco thin crust. All were outstanding, and (no surprise here), we had plenty of leftovers to take home. While we were there they had a water leakage issue and had to close early but let us keep eating the dining room as they cleaned up. The staff was entirely gracious and kind about it. We ordered a so-called derp dish and a thin crust pizza for take out. Worst pizza in Iowa. The deep dish is just really thick dough covered by an extremely thin layer of cheese and other ingredients. Same story for the thin crust pizza - lots of dough, and that's about it. All for $40! Came here before seeing a movie with my cousin. Super simple dining area & menu, which works. We ordered the 10" cheese bread & a 12" deep dish cheese pizza. They were somewhat busy, but our food came out relatively fast. First, the cheese bread was phenomenal. The crust was thick & soft on the inside but crispy on the outside. The marinara was good too, I just wish they had given out a little more of it. Second, the pizza was very good. My only knock against it was that it was just a little over cooked. Not enough that I didn't enjoy it though. It was similar crust to the cheese bread & the sauce and cheese combo was perfect. I loved the zing of the sauce, though it wasn't over powering. Stopped in with a small group for lunch. The place was dead. We were there at 11:30 so you'd expect some business. We sat in an oversized booth and overlooked the menus. You order at the counter but we needed some time to look over the menu. They had a couple of lunch specials. Lunch options aren't all on the menu so be sure to ask what they all have. When we visited, it was a half pizza and salad or a "sandwich" that looked very similar to a calzone. I got the half pizza (pepperoni) with salad. I went with the thin crust after reading the previous reviews. My friends split a pizza and got the thicker crust. My pizza was good and I enjoyed eating it. My friends didn't care for theirs, really at all. Two other booths did fill up but the place still looked dead. I tried 7 Stone Pizza a few weeks ago when I was visiting some friends (and their kiddos) in Waukee. We wanted to get out of the house for dinner, and 7 Stone was incredibly family friendly, offering our friends' young kids some dough to play with while we waited for our food. Our group of four adults and two kids under two shared a medium buffalo chicken pizza and a medium taco pizza. I was pretty impressed with both specialty pizzas and felt they used fresh ingredients. The crust is a little less crispy than what I typically prefer, but the food came out quickly despite the fact that they were pretty busy on a Sunday night. They're set up so you order at the counter and wait for your pizza to be brought to your table, so it's definitely a more casual atmosphere. They do have beer, wine, and soft drinks. I want to come back and try out some more traditional pizzas here for better comparison, but am looking forward to visiting again. read more

When I got there, the man had it all ready and put it in the oven because it's takes only about 2 minutes in their oven.
