    Tasty bruschetta

It is a terrific place, combining great pizza and fantastic customer service. We met staffers Jill and Karen on-site a week ago after their restaurant had just closed, and they encouraged us to return. I'm so glad we did because the food is outstanding, and the restaurant and pub have a great vibe. We enjoyed some yummy bruschetta as we waited for their signature pizza, The Flying Tomato, a homemade pan-style option. It was amazing! Truly delicious. Their customer service is superb, as they are genuine in their positive spirit and display a cohesive way about the whole staff. Thanks to Brooke, Jill, and Karen for a great night.

Always a great choice! Mac and Cheese is a must, not just for kids! Pizza has a excellent tangy tomato sauce. Servers are fast and polite, as well as check on your needs. Pleasant accommodation, with TVs in the appropriate location to catch the score!

Part of the menu I'm looking at.

I was really pleased with this stop in. We had a great greeting from the hostess that quickly led us to our seats. I was really digging the ambiance on this place. We had a great server that was obviously busy, so we cut her some slack. Great food, good prices, good experience. Pizza was our pick for the night but some other tables had sandwiches that left me with FOMO. So ill have to come back to try them.

The flying tomato pizza is great. I know it takes extra time to cook but I enjoy a Strong bow hard cider to pass the time.

Tucked in a small strip mall. We've passed this place a few times over the years, but tonight was the night. Saturday evening at 5:30 we met up with another couple who also had not been here. We got seated by an enthusiastic hostess. I could tell the crowd had just started to pick up with a couple of tables still having menus at the table. Our waitress came by shortly for our drinks. After bringing back our drinks, we put in our order. We ordered the onion rings to share and a flying tomato style pizza. We got the East Sider. When we ordered the pizza, our waitress, Emily , told us pizza was about an hour wait. I appreciate that she gave us the heads up. We didn't have anywhere to be, so we went ahead with the pizza order. Again. Being told ahead of time was very, very appreciated. The onion rings came out hot. They were the thin, stringy onion rings. Served with ranch tasted good. We burned through those quick, and Emily kept the drinks coming. The pizzas finally came, hot and delicious. I really enjoyed the flying tomato style. The crust was flaky like a pot pie. I can see why it takes so long to make and bake. There was even an ad on the table that you have, then make and bake a pizza halfway. Then you take it home and finish the bake. It was a nice family restaurant automosphere. Football up on the screens. The staff was busy, and you can tell they were busy. Overall, this was a good experience, and I would like to come back and try some of the other sandwiches and sides.

02/05/2023 My wife was hungry for chicken wings and found an article stating that Wig and Pen had some of the best, so we came back to try their wings while in the area. We started with a Bloody Mary (see picture) since it was on special for the day and really enjoyed it - good flavor and not to spicy or salty. For an appetizer, we ordered Breaded Mushrooms (see picture) - a solid offering if you like them but nothing super special. For the meal, we ordered Wing Zings (see picture) with Big Ben sauce. The Big Ben sauce was good, but we found the wings to be awfully salty with a very thick, crunchy breading / crust. For us, they were again solid, but not what we would put in the upper echelon of wings that we've eaten. If you are hungry for wings I wouldn't pick this place first, but if you are looking for deep-dish, really cheesy pizza, this is still one of my favorites!

Highly recommend! My team & I were able to order 3 pizzas from their signature items & they were all INCREDIBLE. The pizza was a hit & we asked for 3 different types/styles of pizzas & were able to enjoy all of them. I have been inside of Wig & Pen quite a few times and also agree the service has always been amazing, the lighting is a little darker for mood setting but wonderful environment all around.

Among my top five pizza places in the metro! Tons of toppings and the crust isn't excessively thick and doughy. Pro tip. If you order the flying tomato crust and don't like tomatoes... Ask for it without the tomato slices.

    Wig & Pen Patio date!

Pro tip. Phone ahead ... order your deep dish Chicago style pizza ahead of time, and request to be seated in the patio section. This way you get cold/fresh drinks and can share a salad upon arrival then 5-8 minutes later your steaming hot pizza appears in front of you! It's away from the hustle and is the best way to enjoy Wig & Pen! And don't forget to pickup up your official Wig & Pen pint mugs on your way out, for only $5 each!

Ate dinner here and tried the Flying Tomato-style pizza. Thicker than a thin crust, but not as thick as a Chicago style. I was impressed. Very tasty! Service was good and I enjoyed sitting at the bar afterwards. If in the area, try it out!

    Flying Tomato Pizza

Stopped in for some pizza on a work trip to Ankeny. The deep dish looked really delicious, but I didn't want to wait an hour to eat so I decided on the Flying Tomato pizza...let me tell you, if you love cheese, this is the way to go!! 5/5 stars on the taste....but I will say they were a little light on the toppings (I ordered ham and pineapple, which is underneath the cheese). I'm not complaining though, the cheese more than made up for it. Even though I was by myself, the server was great and very attentive. She didn't even bat an eye when I asked her to split up my check for my expense report! Will definitely be back to try the deep dish the next time I'm in town!

The pizza is delicious and the service was great. We had a nasty dirty glass but they took cause of it immediately. I recommend.

Friday Night At the Angry Gold Fish…read more This is usually a solid place to get a burger, but came up short. We arrived around 7:30 and it was busy. I asked for the corner table which was large and there were two of us. I chose it because it was quiet and it was so loud. The waitress seamed super annoyed. I am deaf in one ear and this was the best place so I could hear and actually enjoy the place. I didn't feel her attitude was justified. If she would have kept pushing the point it was going to get pushed to the manager as I have several disabilities and I don't use them, but I do choose certain places to sit to help manage them. My expectation is for the waitress to be kind and shouldn't matter if it's two people, four people, or six people. Should be glad to have a customer and business. My wife and I got a Knob Creek on the rocks to start off. We also each got the old fashion, one with tots and one with fries. The burgers have really good flavor, but wasn't even hot. The bun was super dry and I wound up leaving the bun and eating the burger. The tots were really good, but also not hot. My wife's was the same. The French fries were good, but not hot. I didn't say anything to the waitress because based on her attitude it was just going to make the night worse and I was out to have a nice evening. I have been here several times and this is my first bad experience here and I hope it's not a sign that the restaurant is going downhill. This is one of my go to spots in Des Moines to get a great burger and it should be fire on a Friday night. Fresh and delicious, not cold and dry, is the new requirement, an angry waitress to complete the Angry Goldfish vibe?
