I had a craving for Chicago-style pizza. I found this Giordano's restaurant fairly close to the hotel where I was staying. I decided to have lunch here after being a tourist in the morning on my final full day stateside last month. After having lunch here, I'd make the drive back to Bloomington. This eatery looked fairly new from the outside. I had no problem backing into a parking spot. There was plenty of parking in front of the restaurant. I then made my way inside. I was greeted by a nice woman. I got a comfortable booth, and had a good view of the football game between the Vikings and Dolphins on one of many screens. My server was Amanda. She talked a mile a minute. She pointed out that I could get any pizza as an individual-sized deep dish or thin crust pizza. It was like she had read my mind. This size is not listed on the restaurant menu. I went with the special as an individual pizza. I was told that deep dish pizzas take 45 minutes to bake. I was good with it. I wasn't in a hurry. I also got a Diet Pepsi. My drink came out. It was refreshing and yummy. You get refills here. There is free wifi. It allowed me to upload my photos on Yelp, read messages, and keep me content browsing various sites. Watching the Vikings win was also great. Sure enough, my pizza came to me in 45 minutes. It looked good. The special consists of sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, and onions. The crust was sturdy. I could hold my slice safely without dumping the filling on me or onto the table. It was a cheesy slice, but yummy with all the toppings. I was perhaps halfway through eating my pizza when my server came over with a box. I gave her quite the puzzled stare. It was mighty presumptuous of her to assume that I couldn't down an individual pizza with four slices. How about asking me whether I needed a box? I told her politely to take the box back. One word: sheesh! If I had ordered a large pizza for me, I'd be fine with a box. It wasn't the case. I also didn't like the rush while I was halfway eating lunch. I got the bill with the box. Perhaps I should have sent the bill away with the box. I paid with a credit card. I got the paper bill. I signed it and tipped. Before doing a mini road trip northbound, I visited the women's washroom. It was at the back and I had to walk past a table of seventeen people to get there. The washroom was clean. No complaints there. I loved the food and drink. I didn't like the rush, which seemed odd considering that baking deep dish pizzas here can't be rushed. There were several different beers on tap at a separate bar area and ours were served cold. For our meal, we ordered The Special as a thin crust (see picture). The toppings seemed fresh, veggies had a little crunch left to them and the crust was very good. This was one of the better pizzas we've had in the area, so would recommend a stop to try it out for yourself. My husband and I had dinner here - first time trying it. It was SO GOOD. Atmosphere is great, server was super friendly. My husband got a Deep Dish More Meats and I got the Thin Crust Super Veggie. I'm a little biased, as I frequently go to Chicago and eat their deep dish pizza. The Des Moines location was a little different than Chicago--hard to explain, maybe the pizza didn't seem as deep/packed--but the salad and service were on point. The salad is probably my favorite things here...shhhhh, don't tell anyone. It's like a perfect mix of salad, tomatoes, Parmesan, and a tangy lemon vinaigrette. I even asked if the dressing is available solo but it's not due to no preservatives. I order it anytime I go to Gios. Our server was also great. Warned us about the extended deep dish cooking time, kept drinks refilled, cleared plates quickly and frequently checked on our experience. My wife has been talking about this pizza place for years. (She had a boss that raved about it) But the closest one to our home is about an hour away. So while we were in Iowa over the weekend, Giordano's was less than a mile from our hotel. We finally decided to try it out. I have to say, this pizza was one of the best I've ever had. Like top 5 of all pizza places regardless of the state. I was amazed how delicious it was. Though it takes 45 minutes for a deep dish, it was absolutely worth the wait. Even the cheese pizza my daughter ordered; she thought; was the best cheese pizza she's ever had. And that is saying a lot for a 12yo who has only had cheese pizza. She never finishes a small pizza, but she did this time. The restaurant building itself looked to be very new. The seating capacity was huge and there were floor to ceiling windows around two sides of the dining area. (I really should have taken a picture). It was a beautiful dining area. Service and our server were great, no complaints there. We were there at noon on a Friday, and we were 1 of about 4 other tables there. I was pretty surprised at how empty it was. Then the food came. Mozzarella triangles were definitely frozen and completely flavorless, as was the dipping sauce. The pizza was ok, thin crust, but again, seriously lacking flavor. If you like bland food you will love it here. This was our second time here, we were not impressed the first time we were there about 4 years ago with the deep dish. This place is great I have been here a few times. The first time I had a Deep Dish Chicago pizza and it was amazing! Flavorful and filling. The the second time around I had the thin crust pizza and it was just as great! Today I had the Chicago beef sandwich and it is so filling that if you wat anything else you have a problem. The sandwich was just great! The bread was crunchy and lightly toasted. The cheese was fully melted and it would stretch after every bite. The meat was very well season and it was not salty or spicy. The peppers were on the side so you don't have to worry about the veggies if you are not a veggie person. The sauce was a great bonus to dip the sandwich into. It added an additional flavor that it is hard to explain. The service is great, friendly and very efficient. My only time that I had to wait a but longer than normal, was my second time as they were changing their shift. The new staff were coming in and replacing the staff. That created a bit of lag on my service but the food was still very well done and the staff was very pleasant. One last thing, they only have 1 dessert item and it is a cookie with ice cream and IT IS TO DIE FOR!! We had a great experience at this new Giordano's tonight! We arrived around 5:45pm on a Monday. The parking lot was very full so I expected to be told there'd be a long wait. We must have arrived just right as we got the last table in the bar area. Otherwise, it'd have been a 45 min wait. Our waitress, (also the bartender) came over and asked if we'd ever been to a Giordano's. I have, many times, so we knew what we were in for. Since this is a new location, I assumed it'd be a bit longer than normal on baking the pizza. We did have our two kids, ages 5 and 2, with us and were hoping they'd not get too stir crazy. Luckily, they do some great things for the kids! They brought them dough to "play" with, a kids menu with crayons to draw on, and there's a wall of windows to watch the kitchen. The kids were thoroughly entertained! We ordered a starter of cheese curds with a small deep dish Meat and More Meat pizza. The cheese curds were hot and crispy and came with ranch and marinara. The kids liked them too! Our pizza came out in the expected amount of time and it was just as expected. Hot, cheesy, and loaded with meat. All four of us enjoyed it and took a slice home. I did have a free sample of sangria and decided to order a glass. My husband had beer and the kids split a milk (the waitress even brought us an extra cup). Our waitress/bartender did a great job all night and it was nice she also acknowledged and catered to our kids. Another note I always make...both restrooms have changing tables!! After a long day of adventure, we preordered our small pizza. yet, we walked into tables of dirty dishes, a bathroom filled with paper on the floor and SNL re-runs on the TV.
