Prensa Libre. Cuban Sandwich... Shaved Pit Ham, Mojo Marinated Pork, Yellow Mustard, Pickle, and Swiss Cheese on thick sliced yellow bread.
    Dan T.

This has become one of my favorite places to grab lunch! It's not far from my work and the food is really good. Yesterday we were in the middle of an outage and my boss looked at me and said... "You hungry yet?" Lol I ran up to Hot Off The Presses and placed a quick to go order. A Daily News, a Prensa Libre, and two bowls of tomato basil bisque. The Daily News is described on their site as follows: "Shaved pastrami, pickle, and white cheddar cheese with horseradish aioli on sourdough bread." The Prensa Libre: "Our Cuban sandwich... Shaved pit ham, Mojo marinated pork, yellow mustard, pickle, and Swiss cheese on thick sliced yellow bread." The owner (Jed) here is a great guy! Personable and friendly! I was a little frazzled with all that was going on at work and he struck up a conversation with me and I kind of forgot what was going on for a moment...until I was in my car and back on my way back to work. Turns out I used to work with his wife at a previous employer. I remember her and her sister well! Lots of memories. Good coworkers and fun people! Hot Off The Presses is one of those success stories where the business originally started as a food truck and moved to a brick and mortar location. The restaurant opened in December of 2024. It's a smaller space in a strip of businesses. Plenty of parking and a few low top tables and chairs for dine in seating. Order and pay at the front counter. Cash or card. There is an online ordering system available and they have a rewards program. The wait for our food was a short one and I was back on my way. Usually I try to take decent pictures to accompany a review, but these really don't do Hot Off The Presses justice. It's hard to capture quality or flavor in a photo... And I think HOTP excels in both of these areas... I guess I did capture the physical business itself, the deep color of the hearty tomato basil bisque and the epic cheese pull that is typical of a HOTP sandwich... I'll have to give them a redo on a less hurried and stressful day. Hot Off The Presses is really a great lunch spot! Especially if you grew up with grilled cheese and tomato soup as comfort food... This is next level of course! But it can evoke the same feelings. Just two kids, a pile of grilled cheese, and some soup when life was much simpler. If you haven't already... You should stop in and check them out. https://www.hotoffthepressesdsm.com/ https://www.facebook.com/HotOffThePressesDSM/

The thing is, it's so simple. It's grilled cheese sandwiches with extra stuff. Sometimes simple is sublime. Let's start with the place. It's still very simple. You go up, put in your order, get your drinks and sit down. It's very plain. Who cares, the food more than makes up for any lack of visual delight. Lizzie had the Prensa Libre, their version of a Cuban, and the Tomato Bisque soup. If the sandwich had been just the ham and other toppings, it would have been good. The marinated pork takes it to a whole new level. It is as good as any pulled pork I have had in the best BBQ joints in town. It is rich and seasoned amazingly. Just brilliant. The Tomato Bisque is creamy and smooth and thick and so tasty. It's comfort in a bowl. I had the Big Cheese. Once again, so simple. Massive amounts of gooey cheese, with some lovely grill burns on the edges here and there. Three slices of thick cut bread. A lot of thick cut bacon. That's it. And it's perfect. The bread is grilled perfectly, the cheese is incredibly tasty, and the bacon takes it to the top. We will go back again. This place is incredible.

We really liked the Fiesta Turkey Wraps and the Street Corn Soup. Very nicely seasoned and the veggies in the wrap were fresh and tasty. Great Job! We (and our puppies) will be back.

I have been to their food truck, so was excited to try the restaurant. My dinner partner and I decided to try them out on a Friday night. We got there about 7pm, they close at 8. About half of the tables were full. We had no idea what to get. The woman working the counter greeted us. We were both debating what to get. We asked her what her favorite was. She offered us suggestions. My dinning companion got the soup of the day (french onion) and the Daily News sandwhich. I got the Prensa Libre (recommendation of the worker.) I tried his Daily news. The meat had a nice flavor and was moist (sometimes pastrami cut like that is dry.) I didn't try his soup. He said it was ok. I had the Prensa Libre, a cuban sandwhich. The worker told me the cooked the ham in house. The sandwhich had great flavor. I think there was a little too much mustard for my liking......so I scraped some off. The worker had told us about the grilled cheese bread bowls, but we both wanted sandwhiches. Definitely want to go back and try some soup in one of these bread bowls.

This place started a a truck and man I was a loyal follower. He makes the very best grilled cheese in the land! Plus the owner is a very kind and authentic person... Today was my 1st time in the new storefront and I will be back frequently. I enjoy nothing more than supporting local especially good people! They are working on artwork for the walls so I expect next time I am there it will be complete! They will be serving 2 soups each day. Always tomato basil and one other. I tried a new Sammie tonight and had the Hot Hammin... it had great flavor and I would recommend it . My mother had my personal favorite 'Fancy'. 4 different cheeses on sourdough. No funky cheese like blue cheese and it make my very happy ... lol This place will not disappoint...plus you can order online and pick up to take home to eat in front of the tv in your pjs...

Someone said in the reviews here that simple is sublime. And I can tell you the band sublime couldn't even make this place even more sublime. Amazing lunch spot, delicious food, good price. You will love it

Ambience and customer service were just... there. Nothing offensive, nothing memorable. It's giving "get your order and go," which honestly works if the food's this good. If you're in it for the sandwich game, don't let the dry vibe throw you off -- the flavor makes up for the rest.

The sandwiches were absolutely incredible--honestly some of the best I've ever had, no question…read more But the wait was beyond frustrating. We were driving through from Colorado back to Minnesota and did everything right: ordered online a full 30 minutes ahead so we could just swing in and pick up. We arrive, my sister (who also ordered ahead online) is already walking out with her food. My brother orders in-person right when we get there, and his sandwich--plus two other walk-in customers' orders--come out before ours even starts being made. We ended up waiting over another 30 minutes. More than an hour total from when we placed the order. What is the point of online ordering if the system doesn't hold your spot in line and just lets in-store orders and later arrivals jump ahead of you? It completely defeats the whole purpose. Still... those sandwiches really were exceptional. Almost worth the headache.

TLDR: Solid all you can eat KBBQ…read more Who can say no Korean barbecue? I certainly can't. It's wonderful to see more diverse food like this pop up in the Des Moines area. Quality of meat is what you would expect for and all you can eat type of place. That being said there's a huge variety, including things like beef, tongue, short rib, and also a lot of different seafood options. I was very impressed by the size of the menu, also ordering food is very easy as it's done via tablet, so no waiting for your waiter to take another order. Overall, I thought it was a great deal, the food is very solid, and would highly recommend it!

Fun place to go for a date or out with friends. Maybe not a good pick for family dinner though…read more We went for my husnads birthday, they gave him a slice of cheese cake ! We did hot pot, atthe discount lunch time. Totally worth it there was only like 2 or 3 things that were dinner only! There was barely anyone there compared to saturday when we came by and the wait time was an hour and a half. I got the herbal broth and a lot of veggies and some quail egg and sweet potato noodle. I wasnt sure about it at the first bite but after a few minutes it grew on me, and I ended up really enjoying it. My husband did the spicy seafood broth and filled it with one of every meat and some noodles. My toddler ate all the fruit from the buffet and not much else . My son picked the tomato hot pot but.... it was kind of gross I wouldnt get that. Nobody at the table liked it and we asked them to just remove it. He ate a little grilled meat but said it was bland by itself, except the garlic shrimp. The seafood tofu broth was still tomato-y but better than the pure tomato for sure, though personally I didnt like either. I think I would stick with the herbal one or mushroom if I went again. My son knocked a half cup of pineapple juice on the floor. I asked for a rag and offered to clean it myself but nobody came back. I asked another person who also never came back. Finally at the end of the meal someone came and mopped it up as we were leaving. It was a little stressful with the kids I dont think i would go again with them, but would with just adults. I could see it being a fun friend outing spot or date night place, more than family dinner. I also felt like it was a little confusing for first time hot pot people, they didnt really explain how anything worked or the sauce station. The drink menu looked fun althougb we didjt geg any. The music was really good and just the right volume.
