Five Hours on the River + Cheba Hut = Damn Near Perfect Went back to Cheba Hut and yep -- still love this place. We came in after about a five-hour float down Beaver Creek, grabbed some drinks, hung out at the bar and demolished an AK-47 French Dip and a Thai Stick. After five hours on the water, it absolutely hit the spot. The bartender was fun, easy to talk to, and added to what we already like about this place -- it just has that laid-back, fun vibe. Good food, good drinks and good conversation. Prices are pretty typical, but if you get there after 8, happy hour kicks in and the bar gets downright cheap. Definitely worth knowing. The AK-47 was hot, cheesy and perfect with the au jus, and the Thai Stick was a great mix of chicken, pineapple, pickles and everything else packed into it. Both sandwiches were loaded and exactly what we needed after being out on the river all day. Cheba Hut has become one of those places we know we can walk into, grab a seat at the bar, relax, eat well and have a good time. Go. We'll be back again and again. read more

Sandwiches are my favorite thing to eat--seriously, I could give Joey Tribiani a real run for his money. The sandwich I had at Cheeba Hut last night is easily one of the top three sandwiches I've ever had. I'd give this place tens across the board--food, service, atmosphere, everything. Can't wait for our next visit. read more

have been ordering my Cali mist for over a year. always delicious! always friendly staff. the website ordering is awesome. I walk in, grab my sandwich and go. I wish I could eat that every day! read more

Finally made it out for a sammie and it was great. You order when you walk in and they bring it to you when it's done. There's also a drive-through available. Many, many options to choose from. It was hard to decide. I went with the Mediterranean Greek one and the flavor combo was fantastic. My husband went with a roast beef one. He liked it, but wants to try others. The decor is fun and they have great names for the food. There's also a bar you can sit at and order alcoholic drinks. We will be back. read more

I had this delivered, so I can't attest to service or ambiance. I ordered the La Canna (Italian) added banana peppers. Along with French onion soup. Wrapped in foil, which I feel kept my toasty sandwich warm. French onion soup had a lid on it AND was fully wrapped in foil, I'm assuming this was a "just in case" measure. Best sub I've ever had and I did have a favorite regular place, which is still delicious, but Cheba Hut takes it up a notch! Plenty of fillings and sauce on my sub and the soup was so flavorful! I can't wait to drive over and check out the interior of this establishment! Thank you for the excellent food! read more

Cheba Hut has been on my list for a bit and I finally had time to check it out after work yesterday afternoon. I placed an order for two sandwiches online. The process was easy and the pick-up time was going to be 18 min out. I was driving from Clive to Johnston so that was actually about what I needed. They have apps in Google Play and the App Store. If you're into rewards programs they have that too. I'm surprised not a lot of people have mentioned the seating and the patio this place has. Sure the decor is eclectic, but I'm not big on the 420 culture. Not against it and not a huge proponent of recreational use of it. Just was never my thing... Honestly though...I don't really care what someone hangs on their walls or calls something on their menu... As long as the food tastes good! Their patio is beautiful and the seating is classic. I'm not sure what I expected, but it wasn't what I walked into. Maybe I thought it would be more like a head shop than a standard fast casual environment? My bad. Seating ranges from a classic bar and stools, high top tables and chairs, half booths (with padded backs) with low top tables and chairs. Ordering is done at the front counter or online. Their menu board at the front counter and online menu are easy to navigate. The two sandwiches I ordered: 5-0 (All the pig baby!!): Blunt (12"), garlic herb bread, salami, ham, cheddar cheese, bacon, pepperoni, prosciutto, giardiniera peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, house dressing (oil & vinegar), Cheba shake (parmesan & oregano). Add jalapeno peppers and banana peppers. Pacific Blue (tuna melt): Blunt (12"), garlic herb bread, tuna, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, house dressing (oil & vinegar), Cheba shake (parmesan & oregano). Add jalapeno peppers, banana peppers, mayo, and dijon mustard. The staff tonight was great. The two young ladies behind the bar said hello as I walked in. The other two young ladies and the gentleman behind the front counter did the same as I approached them. I let them know my name and they handed my bag over to me. My arms literally dipped... A smile rolled across my face. It's like when the staff at Tasty Tacos hands you your order...and it's heavy. You know what I mean. If it's light... Not as good of a night. These two sandwiches had to weigh close to three pounds (plus or minus). I got home. Unwrapped them. Snapped a few pictures and dug in. Fantastic! I wasn't unhappy with anything... Some of the combinations are a little different than other sandwich spots. Shredded cheddar cheese? I didn't know I liked it on a sub. I do now. Ballpark... You're probably looking at an average of $14 for a 12" sandwich (blunt). $11 for an 8" (pinner) and $7 for a 4" sandwich (nug). And you have to browse their munchies and Kool Aid selection...! I consider myself a big eater. A footlong from Subway... Not even a challenge to put down. Well over half of my order from Cheba Hut is wrapped up and in my fridge (for lunch today). A little pricey for some...maybe. But you do get what you pay for here... A great overall experience, fun staff, and good food! Worth checking out. . https://chebahut.com/locations/johnston-merlehay/ read more

Stopped in on recommendation from a couple friends. The vibe was perfect for us. We were welcomed warmly. The menu is up above the counter and a little overwhelming but I didn't shy away. I went right up to the counter and asked the women at the counter what her favorite is. Then my husband asked her what the last thing she ate was. This has always worked out for us. She put together the best sandwich for us. After we put in our orders we took our number and made our way out to sit on the patio. It didn't take very long and our sandwiches came out. She had told me the Kali Mist (Spicy Club) was popular. Its roasted turkey breast, bacon, chipotle mayo, jalapeno, avocado, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle. She let me take off the extra jalapeno because she said it was the perfect heat without it. Normally I am not one to go for turkey for a sub, but this was perfect. Really hit the spot. I don't remember the combo that she got for my husband but his was good too. We shared some chips and enjoyed the beautiful Iowa weather and the meal. We will be back. read more

Stopped into Cheba Hut quickly today! Ordered the Five-O which is all things pork on a sandwich. All the meats were well cured and plentiful on the sandwich. The sandwich was well toasted but had a sauce that wasn't my favorite. Vibes were chill, but nobody was at the bar. read more

I really want to like this restaurant because I love toasted subs and I like that they have a good selection of vegetarian subs. However, the veggie subs have been disappointing and sad. The 1st time I ordered from here I ordered the Magic Mushroom and it literally had 2 mushrooms on the whole sandwich. It was all bread and no teriyaki flavor. The 2nd time (this time) I ordered the Mushroom marinara and asked for no green peppers and extra mushrooms and sauce. I received green peppers and just a few mushrooms and sauce. I took a picture to show. So sad. To be fair, my husband who ordered the Italian, his sandwich was full of meat and veggies and he said was delicious! Just dont order the veggie subs, you'll be disappointed. read more

Have been wanting to try this and finally got the chance- was worth the wait! Fun vibe inside and great patio outside where we ate. Lively music sounded on the patio so if you don't like music or are meeting for conversation be aware. It was fine for my husband and I. There is a bar with craft beer but yesterday was a soda pop day- diet mt dew on tap which is rare in restaurants. Nice variety of sandwiches that can be customized and available in sizes 4, 8 or 12 inches. With a chips and drink combo I only needed half of my 8 inch sandwich (pictured). The seasoning sprinkled on top adds a nice flavor. Bread choices: garlic (husband highly recommends), wheat or white. Toasted to perfection and served after a short 5-minute wait. Meats were legit but they also have. Vegetarian options. The sauces (mine dijonnaise mustard and my husband's chipotle ranch) were perfectly added to add flavor but did not make sandwich soggy. I did see people asking for additional sauce but for me it was the perfect amount. Meal combos include choice of drink with chips or dessert. The fruit loop bar was a clear favorite by patrons! Give this a try- we will be back! read more

Cheba Hut "Toasted" Subs - Midwest Best and Turkey & Roast Beef 8-inch sandwiches - Sandwiches Near Me - Johnston, Iowa

This place is amazing, from the vibe to the staff to the delicious munchies! We ordered multiple sandwiches which were all delicious as well as a couple of different rice crispy treats. The three different staff members that we had interactions with were all very helpful and friendly, you could feel that they enjoyed working there. After we finished, we ordered a few more sandwiches to take home. I actually filled out an inquiry to get my own franchise while waiting for our to go order. read more

Delicious food. Set apart from your standard "sub shop". Unique menu and overall high quality flavors!! Our first visit was great and the employees were helpful, happy and hospitable. They seemed genuinely happy to be there. No issues whatsoever with service. The theme/atmosphere is similar to zombie burger if we're comparing. Sort of grungy, laid back, cozy and clean. The bar offers a different setting if you're after that experience. My wife and I moved from Phoenix and loved Cheba hut so we were very excited to see it here (and pleasantly surprised). The OG location in AZ is awesome but this felt refreshing and updated. Disclaimer: this is a marijuana themed sub shop with not-so subtle innuendos and references to theme. We, personally, do not allow this to deter us from frequenting. We are perfectly comfortable bringing our 3.5 and 1.5 yr old here. It's certainly welcoming to families equipped with boosters and kids meals but it's worth noting what to expect. read more

Big portions, a ton of options, but not the best subs we've ever had. Service though was the best we've ever had. So attentive, so helpful. Definitely the best part of our lunch here. Ambiance was cute lol read more

Absolutely delicious, and definitely would be even better while not sober. They have such a seemingly random selection of goodies for anyone to enjoy, but their sandwiches are top notch. They're helpful and understanding if you've never been before. The cleanliness when I went was iffy, but they were also fairly busy. I will definitely be back to try more sandwiches and treats. read more

Amazing food, atmosphere, and customer service. Everyone's always friendly and having fun. And the sandwiches are so yummy!

Driving through the area and had to make a stop at my favorite spot in the area Cheba Hut. As always an amazing experience. They were busy with a line to the door most of the time we were here. But they got through the line quickly, we got our order in a super fast time frame. Staff was hustling. Food was AWESOME as always. Can't wait to dig into dessert next. Had to order extra for the road trip so good and as always the vibes were immaculate. Great staff, clean and fun! Thanks for yet another great Cheba visit. read more

Alright, you glorious ba*tards, strap in, because I'm about to take you on a fu*king ride through the smoky, sticky, sauce-dripping world of Chēba Hut, a joint that reeks of stoner genius and day-drinking swagger. Picture me, hunched over a table, grease on my chin, half a hard-on from the sheer audacity of this Acapulco Gold BBQ Chicken sandwich grilled chicken breast slathered in BBQ so filthy-sweet it could make a nun blush, topped with a gooey slab of Swiss that's melting faster than a trust fund kid's dignity. Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle yeah, the usual suspects, but they're just there to play backup to the real stars that Shake & House dressing, a tangy, sloppy wet dream of a sauce that ties this whole chaotic mess together like a dominatrix wielding a whip. This thing hit my tongue like a freight train of flavor, and I mean that in the best go*damn way. It's a fu*kin' symphony of smoke and spice, the kind of sandwich you'd j*rk off to if you could figure out how to fu*k bread without looking like a total psycho. I'd shove this beauty down my gullet again in a heartbeat, no question though, Je*us Ch*ist on a pogo stick, the price tag made me wince harder than when I accidentally sat on my own b*lls. Worth it? Maybe if you're baked out of your skull, which, let's be real, is the target demo here. You can smell the reefer in the walls (joking), the kind of place where a stoner would crawl in, pupils dilated, and worship this sandwich like it's the second coming of Bob Marley. And the vibe? Oh, fu*k me sideways, it's a full-on day-drinking paradise. It's got that hazy, laid-back charm where you can sip a whiskey, munch this BBQ beast, and watch the world go to shit outside while you're safe in a cloud of munchies and bad decisions. Chēba Hut's the kind of spot where you'd shove a pickle up your a*s just to see if it pairs with the vibe and hell, it probably would. Unhinged? Sure. Delicious? Abso-fu*king-lutely. Pricey? Yeah, but so's a good ho*ker, and this sandwich fu*ks you way better. read more

We walked in and were immediately greated. We followed the wall toward the counter. It wasn't busy so we moved more toward the menu boards. An employee noticed we looked confused, she asked if we had been there before. We said no. She came out from behind the counter to talk to us. She told us the most popular sandwhiches as well as suggesting the garlic bread. 5-0 and the ak-47. We got our drinks. My dinning partner was super excited over the Kool-aid. Our food was delivered pretty quickly. I love that they have 3 different sizes of sandwhiches. I can never finish a meal so I loved that I could get a 4 inch sandwhich and my dining partner got an 8 in. The sandwhiches were both filled with a good portion of meat. My ak-47 came hot au jus. The resturant seemed clean. The employees were all friendly. Even the gentleman that came around and cleared our baskets. Definitely will come back and try more sandwhiches. read more

Really disappointed in today's visit. They let a door dasher take my $86 order. Not too packed but still active. The woman who took our order was very polite and patient when we were deciding what we wanted. He got the white widow (chicken bacon ranch) on garlic and I got the sticky icky (peanut butter and jelly). We also got a cookie and a rice crispy, both homemade. Our sandwiches were AMAZING and toasted to perfection. They filled us up and we saved our treats for later. We left very happy and so did our pockets. Definitely recommend Cheba hut!! read more
