We got spicy egg drop soups with our lunch and it had an interesting flavor. It wasnt really spicy. I can't really describe it but it was what you would expect if you ordered egg drop soup at a BBQ joint. Not terrible, but not sure I enjoyed it. The salmon avocado and shrimp tempura we ordered were good. The chicken was edible but tasted like they grabbed some precooked chicken from Costco fridge and put it on top of some grilled onions. My boyfriend and I stopped in here on a Friday night around 5:30. We were seated right away, but this place definitely gets busy as the night goes on. We arrived during happy hour and ordered of that menu. They have a great happy hour. We started with a green salad and pork dumplings. Both were delicious and we would order again. I love the ginger dressing it is so light and refreshing. The dumplings were cooked perfectly and were soft with that light crisp/crunch. It comes with 6, but I forgot to get a picture before we dug in. We ordered two rolls the Angry Dragon and Marilyn Monroll. Both were good, not my favorite, but I'm looking forward to trying more of their rolls. The service was good, but nothing crazy. I have been here multiple times and never had an issue - but what a disappointment to book for a first date night with a sitter. We had a 5:30 reservation & major disappointment from the kitchen & arrival of food. We waited 41 minutes for our appetizers to arrive. My sushi wasn't cold - which made me feel like it was waiting out for a moment. I will say outside of that my husbands Mongolian beef was delightful. We never received the appetizer we ordered. I ordered the Marilyn Monroe & angry dragon - I would recommend both. To give an example of their timeline - the table next to us got their appetizer within being seated 11 minutes into their arrival & those to the right of us got their entire at the 20 minute mark (average server timeline). The reason given that our order was taking time, was they behind a lot of to go orders. Again, not devastated but for sure not recommending to any friends anytime soon. Also when compensated for this - they didn't charge us for the appetizer we didn't receive (thank goodness?). And then discounted a drink & sake bomb. Honestly as someone who's served for 11+ year an entree at any other location would've been the appropriate gesture. We got our drinks and then were reminded that the happy hour ends at 6:00 so we got a good deal on our appetizers and sushi. I tried the edamame and pork potstickers, they were the usual. I then ordered the California rolls and crunchy crab rolls, both were very good. I also tried the rock and roll rolls and those were very good too! The restaurant while having an upscale look, is comfortable and welcoming. We started with the fried pork dumplings, crispy flavorful, and the Angry Dragon Rolls, super fresh tuna. For the main we had the Pad Thai and Kimchi Fried Rice. First time for the Kimchi Fried Rice with Beef and I was pleasantly surprised. The beef was tender and cooked to perfect temperature. Our waitress was attentive, without being overbearing. If I had to find a criticism of Wasabi, I would have to say parking availability. We ordered 2 more rolls that we really enjoyed - but the app made the meal! Well, like I said, cars outside are within a stones throw so parking is like being a Rock Star!! A group of us were staying in the area for a conference. Wasabi was within walking distance of our hotel - yay! We walked in around 5:45 and the restaurant was just starting to get busy. We were seated right away. Our waitress was nice, but not overly friendly. When I asked about tax exemption she didn't know what I was talking about and needed to ask the owner. She asked the owner, who called is accountant, and 'no,' we couldn't have the tax removed from our bill (despite the fact that I was paying with a personal company purchasing card and our tax exempt number was printed right on it). This seemed odd to me, as a restaurant paying federal taxes should be able to accommodate this. Being that Ankeny is pretty much Des Moines, I find it kinda hard to believe that other state and federal employees don't ever patronize the restaurant trying o do the same. After that interaction, the waitresses attitude seemed to change a little. Everyone enjoyed their meals (spicy salmon roll for me) and I like my mixed drink. It was a drink special, their 'Mulberry Mule' or something like that. My co-worker didn't care for his drink. Two cocktails were $30 including tip, so I definitely wouldn't reorder those. My salmon roll was good, but not the best I've ever had. Ambiance was super dark and the red/black decor really seemed to date the restaurant. The place was packed by the time we left. Lots of families with kids. Definitely recommend if you're in the DMACC area and have a sushi craving. Though I can't say it will blow you away. read more

I've called and gotten take out. I do love their rolls but I have come to find I am addicted to the Baked Seafood roll. I want it each time I come here. It's it a must for me know. Great addition to Prairie Trail! The location is nice, the outside and inside both are very nice and the decor is pretty. We had reservations but showed up early and were sat with a friendly smile. They weren't busy at 6pm but the weather was not great. I ordered chicken yakisoba and a sweet potato roll. I enjoyed both! The noodles and chicken both had great flavor and were perfectly cooked. Not sure what roll my husband had but he enjoyed it. We had the chocolate cake for dessert as well. It was pretty tasty. I enjoyed the atmosphere and our server was friendly and attentive. It's National margarita day so of course you're going out for sushi, or at least I am. This is much more than that though. This is a pre-surgery celebration of a much improved life to come. Wasabi in Ankeny is located in the "District", an up and coming collection of bars, restaurants and overpriced lofts. I feel old when I come to this part of town but also wise because I know that despite my rather expensive recreational pharmaceutical addictions, I am no where even close to being as much in debt as the people wandering around this area. I understand though. You gotta look the part right. She was given the choice of surf or turf. She chose surf. Good thing I didn't make any bets because I would of wagered my one remaining testicle that she'd choose turf. So I knelt there at the Delta at the Alpha, the Omega, at the cradle where the river meets the sees, and like a blessing come from heaven for something like a second I was healed and my heart was at ease". "How is it?" "That is amazing. That is so good I'd dip my genitals in it" He gives me a knowing look and takes our order right before bringing out the shrimp rangoon he convinced me to buy earlier. She orders the Angry Dragon and the Rock n Roll. I go with the Spicy Mexico and the Marilyn Monroll. Win number 2. Shrimp Rangoon with homemade cream cheese. Did I hear that right. Doesn't matter because they are delicious and the sauce they are served with is sublime. The sushi itself didn't blow me away. It was good, make no mistake about that but it was on the level of most of the other sushi joints in town. Nothing really set it apart. Everything surrounding the sushi does stand out which is why I am giving Wasabi 5 stars. The service, the atmosphere, the drink and the appetizer shown so brightly that we were already hooked by the time the sushi arrived. She was full and announced it as such. I really like how spaced out it is in side. Of coarse they have outside seating as well if you would like. They do have a few beers on tap and some bottled as well. Staff was helpful and friendly. When we went at 530 we were seated right away and had food within 20 mins. I call this excellent service and get bonus points from me. The baked seafood roll is amazing and one of my new favorites. I have enjoyed eating at the various Wasabi locations in Des Moines so I was really excited when I heard they would open an Ankeny location. After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, the location opened but we could make it until last night. The wait was absolutely worth it. The location itself is very fun and modern looking. Since it is October the inside entry was decorated elegantly with pumpkins and other fall colors and items. Once I got inside the restaurant, I thought "Wow!!" They really went all out. Each Des Moines Wasabi restaurant has its own feel and most are your typical Midwestern sushi restaurant. A few decorations, a sushi bar, and a bar. This place felt more modern yet traditional. The light sconces were beautiful. The purple lighting was fun but not overwhelming. The tables were a mix of high tops and tables. I just loved it. The food and service lived up to and actually exceeded my expectations. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. She checked on us just the right amount of time and cleared the dishes pretty quickly. We started out with a spicy squid salad appetizer. While it was spicy, the cucumbers and greens helped to balance it out. The Angry dragon roll and Triple tuna roll were really fresh tasting and the sushi rice was perfectly made. I couldn't help thinking that these three dishes were the best combination that I've had at a sushi restaurant in a very long time. I can't wait to come back again and again. read more

I LOVE the Wasabi chain around town! From service to ambience to seafood quality- they always knock my expectations out the park! The Wasabi-Ankeny is no exception! Big windows, blue ambient lighting, a huge bar and gorgeous lotus flower lights- this place transfers you to somewhere else! The service was great- our waitress was attentive and knowledgeable. We made it JUST in time for happy hour so there was plenty of wine and mules to choose from! I got the lychee mule and it wasn't bad- a little too sweet for my taste but that may also be because they mix it with raspberry vodka. Fun flavor combo- just not for me. My friend got the cucumber mule and that was fantastic! We ordered a couple apps to share- the shishito peppers and the Brussels sprouts. Both were VERY good! LOVE the vinegar based dressing on the sprouts! I ordered the tonkatsu ramen (I LOVE tonkatsu and definitely appreciate the work that goes into making the broth) and I thought it was good! Personally, I was missing something sharp or fresh to cut how rich and umami the broth was, whether it be corn, pickled bamboo, etc. Otherwise- I will definitely be back and I will tell my friends too! read more

What can I say?!! As all their other Wasabi restaurants, this one is just as amazing. We were there for the soft opening and it is beautiful. I'm absolutely in love with the lotus lamps! The atmosphere is vibrant and fun. Our server, wish I could remember her name, was very nice. We always get excellent service and excellent food and every single Wasabi. Here's some advise: Forget all other sushi places in the Des Moines and surrounding areas, hubby and I have tried them all and NOTHING compares to the food and service you will get at ANY of the Wasabi locations. We have been to the Wasabi location in Ankeny several times now and cannot get enough! On our most recent visit we split the veggie egg rolls (the order comes with 4, but we were hungry so only two pictured). I got the shrimp fried rice --yum!! and my boyfriend got the black garlic tonkotsu ramen - also delicious and pretty much his standard order now. We have also had the spicy seafood ramen and several of their sushi rolls. Everything is delicious and we always look forward to dinners or happy hour at Wasabi! I really enjoy all the Wasabi locations. This is my first time to Ankeny. I had the sashimi and brussel sprouts. My mom had the spicy shrimp soup and pot stickers. I have nothing but good to say about all the food. The brussel sprouts were fried with soy, mint and lemon. I couldn't taste the soy but not much mint or lemon. The whole table enjoyed them. The shrimp soup was not spicy and had a wonderful light tomato flavor but still creamy. read more
