Wasabi was a fantastic place three years ago but has gone down hill since. Menu has changed up and is not as good as it was. Spicy tuna rolls my wife and I had were not good. The spicy tuna looked like it had food coloring in it and was of a paste consistency. Like it was squeezed out of a container. Plus some of the other pieces of tuna in another roll were very strong fish tasting and very dark almost blue'ish in color. Management has some improving to due in food quality, taste, and value before we go back now. There are better places in Clive and Des Moines which are worth the drive over Ankeny Wasabi. read more

I constantly have issues when order through door dash. My last order was inedible. My mochi was unsafe to eat and old. The outer mochi layer was chewy and falling off the ice cream, the ice cream had melted and been refrozen (you can tell when it's grainy and has ice crystals in it), and it actually tasted like sand. My spring rolls were cold and soggy in the middle and my sushi was a simple avocado roll and the avocado wasn't ripe it was still hard. I have been in person, the service is better but I've had things float in my drink. I want to like it because they have tofu and not a ton of Asian restaurants around here do but it's just lack of attention to detail. read more

I must admit, this was our 2nd choice as the initial place we had planned to dine was closed on Sundays. So, we were thankful that they were open and didn't serve pizza or bbq. I should also mention that I do not care for sushi, so this review may not matter to you. We tried the spring rolls and shrimp ragoon. The spring rolls were perfectly crisp, not greasy and a good flavor. The shrimp ragoon was just ok. The dipping sauce helped a lot. Our server mentioned "they used shrimp instead of imitation crab like everyone else", honestly, I didn't feel they tasted anything different than apparently imitation crab. The portion sizes were great and this was the lunch hour. I had veggie fried rice which had TONs of large vegetables and a variety of them as well. Quite impressive. The downside...saltiness. I just couldn't finish my dish. All in all, it was ok. Oh, the booths were interesting. At first I thought uncomfortable, but then realized they made you sit up straight and are good for you. Wasabi Chi is my favorite sushi restaurant. It took awhile and the right day to try their sister restaurant in Ankeny. The atmosphere is nice. It was busy and the tables did feel like they are arranged in an awkward way. This lead this to be an open atmosphere and not a romantic one. The hostess was efficient but not very friendly. Our server was lovely. The menu is different than Wasabi Chi and it was fun to decide what to get. The appetizer we chose was grilled calamari. It was fresh and so nice to have a full calamari option. We did not care for the red season that was sprinkled all over the top. It tasted odd, overpowered the delicate flavor and left the ponzu sauce flavorless as it was so strong. It was not too spicy or salt or sweet, to us it tasted metallic. I would not order this again unless it was without the sseasoning. The quality if the calamari was excellent. We always have to get the sashimi and it was wonderful and fresh. The sashiimi vomes with real waasabii while the sushi comes with the regular powdered wasabi. So we always steal the wasabi from the sashimi plate. We ordered threee rolls and they were all three delicious. Marilyn Monroll, chefs roll and dang, I forgot the third on but its the one on the menu with truffle oil. The truffle oil gave it a unique flavor. I actually look forward to trying the ramen and would go back. The menu included some nice meals that may even tempt me away from sushi. read more

Very attentive and gave great recommendations!! Our water was never empty! We started with the crispy Rangoon's. So good!! A shrimp filled version of the crab Rangoon with a light sweet cream cheese filling and a tangy sweet and sour! Delicious!! My husband and I split the chicken yakisoba (they gave us the option of having it split onto 2 plates so we could try a bit if everything without trying to awkwardly pass things! Super awesome! It was delicious! Super full of flavor and perfectly cooked chicken! We also split the grand mariner tiger shrimp, they are served with rice and toasted walnuts! Delicious and somewhat sweet but overall a great balance of savory too and perfectly cooked! Plus the prawns are massive! We finished our indulgence with the Chocolate mousse cake! Wow! I would highly recommend this to any chocolate lover! Super rich but not overly sweet! The restaurant itself is beautiful! Kaitlyn was our server tonight and she did a great job for having all the tables at the end of the night. We got the salmon roll, tuna/avocado roll, angry dragon, crouching tiger and 2 orders of sashimi. They were all very good!! My only problem is that the manager, Micheal, sat at the bar the entire time during our dinner and did nothing to help Kaitlyn out. Our food sat up at the front sushi bar for 8 minutes as he made eye contact us with several times and then at the food. I guess as a manager you should lead by example and sitting at the bar starring at your phone while someone's sushi order sits up there is not doing just that. read more

I was so excited to see this place go in and after two visits have been pretty underwhelmed. First, I want to say how terrible the entry light is... I am not sure how the District let that one pass! But that aside, inside the ambiance is nice and feels upscale and intimate. I've been once with a group of 4 at a high top table and once with my husband, sitting at the bar. We had good service both times. Really there is not much "wrong" with our visits, but given the price of the sushi, we are unlikely to be frequent customers. We love sushi, but Hy-Vee Wednesday sushi night has spoiled us! The grilled shishito peppers were good, I would order them again. The spicy garlic edamame was also very good. We had quite a few rolls between the two visits, and all were good and fresh, but if you like sushi, I would not recommend the Crouching Tiger Roll. The truffle oil just felt weird. We walked in for dinner and excited to try the new sushi spot. There was 4 other tables with people eating. The sushi chef welcomed us. The host was sweeping and just looked at us. After awkwardly standing for about a minute the host came over and greeted us. He sat us. We sat for about 10 minutes where no one acknowledged us. Three different waitresses walked by us, the host walked by us several times, a busser cleaned two tables right next to us, the waiters walked by us again. We made eye contact with everyone. I saw the host who was sitting with two other off-duty people One of them looked at us walked to the back of the kitchen and spoke to the cook who was white. She looked at us like she was annoyed by our presence of being there. I told my hubby what I noticed and we walked out before we ordered in fear they might contaminant our food. We spent a large sum of money there the first time with drinks, appetizers, and meals. I will not spend my money somewhere where silent segregation is still practiced. I hope the owner sees this! We were on a business trip to Ankeny and decided to try Wasabi out since it had great reviews on Yelp. Best decision! We were happy with the surroundings, the service, and of course the food!
