My dad and I have been going to this place since we moved to Des Moines back in 2019 (more or less). We love it here! The staff are so sweet and so is the owner! Small sweet authentic Japanese restaurant! Great service, food was good, and pricing was affordable for sushi! Small space, a little dark, and deco was a mix of Asian and American influence. I wouldn't recommend the chicken katsu because it was dry and the edamame didn't have flavor. Everything else we had was great and sushi was ! Younger waiter helped us and he was new at making drinks. He made our first ones too weak, so the owner was okay with him making new drinks for us and the second ones were better. From outside you don't think much of it. We were on our way to another location near by but then decided sushi sounded so good. This was our first visit, but you can tell who the regulars are by the love the staff gives them. What a great choice. We were luckily seated right away on a WED, which is 10.99 for specialty rolls night. In indulged in Miso soup which hit the spot. If you've ever had Miso its very simple and cant really get it wrong. I cant remember the name of the rolls we got, but I know if I saw the names again I would get them in a heart beat. They were delicious and artistically put together. They are so beautiful you almost don't want to eat them. Here are the beautiful rolls for your eye candy. Sakura Sushi is quickly becoming my favorite sushi spot in all of Des Moines. It's tucked into a small strip mall near the Hy-Vee in the Valley Junction neighborhood. It's a little cozy, which I like since it never seems too crowded. The sushi is rolled almost to perfection. I feel it's rolled so well that it never falls apart before taking a bite. A lot of places in town have loosely rolled sushi which can make it fall apart easily. Everything I've had is great. From their salmon roe to their sea urchin. I especially love their hand rolls. I believe they have daily specials too so make sure to check that out. I highly recommend this place. read more

Service was about the only redeeming this about this place. The waiter was attentive. Other than that the sodas were flat, the rolls were pretty much inedible. Private and cozy little hideaway with awesome sushi! The servers, especially La-La, are attentive and welcoming. They set up the saki bombs and count along before the saki drops. Makes for an interactive and fun experience. We started with crab rangoons and spicy edamame. We ordered a second round of crab rangoons because they were so delicious. We ordered the Dragon roll, Philly roll (raw with soy paper), and Superwoman roll. The dragon roll was the best. I always try Philly everywhere I go and there's was good. The Superwoman wasn't as good as we expected. In addition to the regular mochi we always get, we had their fried ice cream which was awesome! We also had the cheesecake... amazing! This place is so incredibly tasty! Went in on Monday around 4pm to try out their all you can eat deal. We didn't have to wait at all but I suspect it's because we came before dinner. Our waitress was very nice and the sushi was absolutely wonderful. You are only allowed 5 rolls, which I was hesitant about, but I only could get through 3 and my partner through 4 before being so stuffed we couldn't even think about eating any more. Total bill for the two of us was $52 or so ($21.99 AYCE per person + $8 automatically added tip + tax). Not something we can do every week but still a great deal! We will be back. read more

Never had such horrible service before. Our waitress put menus on the table and walked away without saying anything to us. We had to flag her down as she never came over to check on us after taking our initial order and we were paying for the all you can eat. When we finally were able to order our second round of rolls she left it sitting on the bar for over 15 minutes after the sushi chiefs finished making it. In the time it sat there 7 other plates where made, put on the bar and taken to tables all while our sushi just sat there. The beer was warm. Rolls were bland except for 1 that was decent. Although the sign for their all you can eat advertises nigiri its NOT actually included but cost extra. read more

My son and I have stopped here several times before or after our haircuts at Signature Platinum Barbershop that is just down the street. Every time we have come here the food is fantastic! The flavors are amazing, the sushi is to die for, the service is exceptional and the drinks are excellent. I would highly recommend their bento box for lunch. Perfect little sushi place on the west side! Located in the strip mall near the HyVee on Grand this place is pretty unassuming, but the sushi was fantastic! They have some great lunch specials too if you ever find yourself on the West Side at lunch time. Since we were there for lunch we did not have any mixed drinks, but looks like they had a pretty great menu for that. The sushi was fresh and came out fast - the staff was courteous and friendly! After a couple visits, I am still impressed! We found this spot randomly during a visit to Des Moines. When we pulled up, I was hesitant purely because of its location, in a strip-mall set up. My husband and I love this spot: though small, and not crazy fancy or flashy, their food is fantastic! The rolls I remember getting are the Super Crunchy and the dynamite roll: both are cooked and fried, and full of flavor! Seriously, they're amazing! I wasn't a huge fan of their take on crab rangoons, and their ginger salad dressing is more of a purée than some of my favorite spots back home, but still offers a good flavor! Overall, I recommend this spot for a quick lunch stop or casual dinner! read more

We stopped in for lunch on a weekday, and were seated right away. The place was very clean, cozy, and the staff seemed nice as well. It's very small, so it wouldn't be a good option for a large group but is great for groups of 4 or less. I LOVE sushi and typically order nigiri (raw fish on top of rice) when going out for lunch, as it's much more affordable than at dinner time. I did the same here, and it was...okay. The fish was very bland with almost no flavor at all. The miso soup that came with it was good, and I did have some pork gyoza that a coworker ordered and those were very good. For me, this ranks lowest on my list in terms of sushi quality out of the places in the metro I have tried (Wasabi Chi/Tao, Sukari, among others). I'm sure their stylized rolls are good, but pass on getting nigiri here and head to Wasabi if that's the route you want to go. read more

I went for the all you can eat special and had an insane amount of avocado. Really good stuff

At first glance, I was feeling a bit apprehensive. I mean, strip mall restaurant, and sushi specifically. The inside is small, maybe 6 booths, two table/ booth combos, and seating at the bar. The place is a bit untidy as well, not dirty, just cluttered looking. So, 2 out of five for ambiance and curb appeal. The miso soup blew my mind, maybe it's cause it's so flipping cold outside or maybe it's cause it's really that good. It was just more flavorful than many misos I've had in the past. The sushi was fresh. There were pieces that were like butter, so smooth and soft and subtle. 5 out 5 for food. Service was friendly and attentive but sooooooo sloooooowwwwww. Sloth slow. I think its a time management issue. There were at least 4 chefs/ apprentices behind the sushi bar, but most of them were prepping. I think it would have been a little better if they had temporarily set aside the prep tasks for the future to address the current orders. So, 3 out of 5 for timeliness and service. This gives an overall 3.33 stars, but I'm going to round up to 4 cause I will probably go back. It's really all about freshness when it comes to sushi. read more

Came in on a Saturday night for a night out with friends at their recommendation.  I was surprised at how small the place was with only about 6 booths and two tables (one table could seat up to 8) and a bar overlooking the sushi station. We had reservations and were seated within 5 minutes of arriving. Drink orders were taken promptly, but my boyfriend ordered a corona with lime that never came during our meal.we ordered the crab rangoons and we were disappointed. They were okay, but packed much crab or cream cheese filling. They had a few sushi specialty rolls on special for the night and we decided to try one along with two other specialty rolls. The specialty roll was the Super Star Roll (tempura lobster, mango, avocado, cream cheese topped with snow crab, crunchy flakes and fish eggs), the Crunchy 2 in 1 (shrimp tempura, avocado, cream cheese topped with spicy crabmeat and crunch flakes), and the Snow Man (shrimp tempura, cream cheese, mango inside, topped with crab meat and chef special coconut sauce). All of the specialty rolls were phenomenal. My favorite was the Super Star roll. It was absolutely delicious. The other two were great as well. The coconut in the snow man roll was a nice touch to complement the mango. The spicy crab meat on the 2 in 1 crunchy roll really made the flavors pop.  The presentation of the sushi was creative and eye catching, something I have not experienced at any other sushi restaurant. I would recommend stopping by if you're in the area. This has now made my top 2 list of sushi restaurants in Des Moines. read more

My niece and I had a wonderful meal... Not the worst inland sushi I have ever eaten but not the best. The staff were adorable and very attentive. We did find the noise one place a little difficult to overcome. There was a table of 6 seated across from us as we came in and it was almost as if there were 60 of them. The service was decent and the waitress nice, but definitely not authentic. I ordered 2 pieces each of the tuna, yellow tail, shrimp and a large sake (they have a very limited selection). The fish is edible, the rice is below average, but this is middle 'merica so don't expect much...again, "sake bomb" sushi. What was funny was when I asked how much the toro was (as it said m/p), the waitress answered, "what is that?". A solid pick but nothing outstanding. We stopped in tonight after our gym visit since it's practially next door. The place was busy, but we were lucky to find a seat at the bar immediately. We noticed the strong fried fish smell as we walked in; we eventually became accustomed to this. We were surprised to see a Monday all you can eat special for $19.99. This menu included many options for sushi rolls, including some more creative vegetarian options that I noticed after ordering. So many times, places only have a couple of options, so this was a pleasant surprise. As this was our first visit, I went with two classics: Sweet potato and the AAC roll aka avocado, asparagus, and cucumber. Both were solid, and my husband enjoyed his two rolls as well (the Hawaii and another roll with shrimp). We also ordered the spicy edameme, which was quite different than others we've had. The shells were sauceless, making this version feel healthier and with less of a kick unless you got a piece with the spice sprinkled on it. In the end, the meal was satisfying and a fair price. The biggest drawback was the slow pace. Our server was attentive and personable, but our sushi took 45 minutes to arrive. While this may have been due to the Monday night special, it certainly influenced our experience and likely means we'll avoid Monday visits here. read more

My H and I have been on the hunt for delicious ramen so this was a mission to accomplish. I ordered a standard chicken ramen and my H ordered the spicy beef ramen. Quick service for a Thursday night 7:00pm. Every booth and spot at the bar was filled. Didn't feel busy but it was a good pace of customers. Shop plays regular American music from the radio and sports on their two tvs. (Ha! Not very Japanese atmosphere-but whatever!) Had the crab rangoons for appetizers. They serve 5 in your order. Served hot and tasty; right amount of cream cheese and crunch. The ramen bowls were great. It had its own flavor, very different from other competitors. I would say the standard broth was bland compared to other places. They only use one broth for the "chicken" or "beef" option. I found the soup needed the "spicy" to it, so omitting it was making it bland. It was medium spicy, and I'm a person who likes mild. Comparable but more mild to the "99" at Krunkwich. My husband liked it. I found I liked the broth to enjoy the whole bowl. $11.95 per bowl. Pricy. Big bowl but they give you a lot of ramen and dressings. Found out they make their own ramen noodles in house. A++ for that. If you're looking to fix a ramen craving on the west side of town this is a good place! I'll be trying sushi next visit. read more

Sushi was ok, not the best in Des Moines but decent. The customer service was terrible. From the moment we walked in, the staff acted as if they'd rather be anywhere else but serving us. We were rushed through our order and quickly brought out our check, not asked if we needed anything else. Restaurant is tiny and can't accommodate groups larger than 4, the booths are also really squished together. I saw a lot of people ordering to-go and maybe that's the way to do it. We have been here many times and always loved the food but when we went a few weeks ago and ordered the usual rolls what they gave us was a much smaller portion than we have gotten in the past. The even laid some of the rolls out flat so it filled up the plate better. Same price, less food. Disappointed. read more
