Small sweet authentic Japanese restaurant! Great service, food was good, and pricing was affordable for sushi! Small space, a little dark, and deco was a mix of Asian and American influence. I wouldn't recommend the chicken katsu because it was dry and the edamame didn't have flavor. Everything else we had was great and sushi was ! Younger waiter helped us and he was new at making drinks. He made our first ones too weak, so the owner was okay with him making new drinks for us and the second ones were better. Plan on visiting again to try other dishes!
Best sushi in Des Moines!! Do not hesitate to visit... I am not just saying this! I have lived on the East coast, we travel a lot... and this place is top tier! Amazing quality sushi, beautifully presented, great flavor! You have to try!
Very friendly staff! I came in after my nail appointment and I took some rolls to go. It was so delicious and fresh I loved all of my choices. I got a spicy tuna roll, California roll and NJ roll. All made to perfection. Highly recommend any sushi lover to try this place. Will be coming back more often.
From outside you don't think much of it. We were on our way to another location near by but then decided sushi sounded so good. This was our first visit, but you can tell who the regulars are by the love the staff gives them. What a great choice. We were luckily seated right away on a WED, which is 10.99 for specialty rolls night. In indulged in Miso soup which hit the spot. If you've ever had Miso its very simple and cant really get it wrong. I cant remember the name of the rolls we got, but I know if I saw the names again I would get them in a heart beat. They were delicious and artistically put together. They are so beautiful you almost don't want to eat them. Here are the beautiful rolls for your eye candy. Hands down would go here again if given the opportunity.
Went in on a Friday around 6:30 and were seated right away. Got an order of Crab Rangoons that were good! A little overwhelmed by the amount of options on the menu but settled on the Crazy Tuna, Ninja Roll, Ichiban, and Mountain Roll. Amazing!
This was an excellent midweek lunch. The service was great and the food was some of the best. Service was quick and accommodating without being rushed or pushy. This is a hole in the wall that is a must stop!
Private and cozy little hideaway with awesome sushi! The servers, especially La-La, are attentive and welcoming. They set up the saki bombs and count along before the saki drops. Makes for an interactive and fun experience. We started with crab rangoons and spicy edamame. We ordered a second round of crab rangoons because they were so delicious. We ordered the Dragon roll, Philly roll (raw with soy paper), and Superwoman roll. The dragon roll was the best. I always try Philly everywhere I go and there's was good. The Superwoman wasn't as good as we expected. In addition to the regular mochi we always get, we had their fried ice cream which was awesome! We also had the cheesecake... amazing! Definitely will be back. They are open on Sundays which is another bonus.
Service was about the only redeeming this about this place. The waiter was attentive. Other than that the sodas were flat, the rolls were pretty much inedible. We were seated next to a light that kept flickering which was incredibly annoying. Overall I will not be back and do not recommend.
This place is so incredibly tasty! Went in on Monday around 4pm to try out their all you can eat deal. We didn't have to wait at all but I suspect it's because we came before dinner. Our waitress was very nice and the sushi was absolutely wonderful. You are only allowed 5 rolls, which I was hesitant about, but I only could get through 3 and my partner through 4 before being so stuffed we couldn't even think about eating any more. Total bill for the two of us was $52 or so ($21.99 AYCE per person + $8 automatically added tip + tax). Not something we can do every week but still a great deal! We will be back.
Never had such horrible service before. Our waitress put menus on the table and walked away without saying anything to us. We had to flag her down as she never came over to check on us after taking our initial order and we were paying for the all you can eat. When we finally were able to order our second round of rolls she left it sitting on the bar for over 15 minutes after the sushi chiefs finished making it. In the time it sat there 7 other plates where made, put on the bar and taken to tables all while our sushi just sat there. The beer was warm. Rolls were bland except for 1 that was decent. Although the sign for their all you can eat advertises nigiri its NOT actually included but cost extra.
Im no sushi expert, but i know that this place has the best sushi in des moines. The kobe roll was so good i couldnt stop thinking about it for a week. The crab rangoons were absolutely spectacular.

Love how Sakura Sushi has remained consistent in quality and service! They keep it quality, yet affordable. This time I was able to be in town for their Monday Specials 'All you can eat rolls for $7.99' in house. Their list is pretty comprehensive, and I ordered some extras as my favorites too. Also, I love their new decorating. It's bright yet private and comfy, great ambiance for a relaxed affair. read more

My dad and I have been going to this place since we moved to Des Moines back in 2019 (more or less). We love it here! The staff are so sweet and so is the owner! They remodeled their restaurant not too long ago, and it looks so clean and beautiful in there. The food is amazing as well!! My dad always gets the Mouth Watering roll, he always loves it! The Crab Rangoons are a must try as well! Those are always so good!! (Some photos I've taken from previous trips) read more

Best Ramen I've ever had! Amazing service, very attentive servers. I've been going there for 2-3 years, everything from the sushi and appetizers to the ramen always tastes as good every single time! I've tried many other ramen restaurants around Iowa and Chicago and nothing beats this one. I always recommend to family and friends and they've all loved it! I Highly recommend! Perfect little sushi place on the west side! Located in the strip mall near the HyVee on Grand this place is pretty unassuming, but the sushi was fantastic! They have some great lunch specials too if you ever find yourself on the West Side at lunch time. Since we were there for lunch we did not have any mixed drinks, but looks like they had a pretty great menu for that. The sushi was fresh and came out fast - the staff was courteous and friendly! We'll definitely be back for a sushi lunch date soon. read more
Sushi is subpar but for $20 all you can eat on Monday's really is not a bad deal. Try to come early to get a table. The staff seem to know each other as friends so they do help each other a lot. I would do this maybe once every 6 months read more

After a couple visits, I am still impressed! We found this spot randomly during a visit to Des Moines. When we pulled up, I was hesitant purely because of its location, in a strip-mall set up. My husband and I love this spot: though small, and not crazy fancy or flashy, their food is fantastic! The rolls I remember getting are the Super Crunchy and the dynamite roll: both are cooked and fried, and full of flavor! Seriously, they're amazing! I wasn't a huge fan of their take on crab rangoons, and their ginger salad dressing is more of a purée than some of my favorite spots back home, but still offers a good flavor! Overall, I recommend this spot for a quick lunch stop or casual dinner! read more

For lunch great value, quick service, excellent sushi. The all-you-can eat sushi is Mondays only. We got 3 rolls for $12.95 which is a great deal. The fancier rolls are not on the list of 3 but for lunch it's just fine. You get a salad OR soup with lunch as well. The iceberg salad had 2 cherry tomatoes, couple cucumbers and carrots, which were nice adds. read more

We stopped in for lunch on a weekday, and were seated right away. The place was very clean, cozy, and the staff seemed nice as well. It's very small, so it wouldn't be a good option for a large group but is great for groups of 4 or less. I LOVE sushi and typically order nigiri (raw fish on top of rice) when going out for lunch, as it's much more affordable than at dinner time. I did the same here, and it was...okay. The fish was very bland with almost no flavor at all. The miso soup that came with it was good, and I did have some pork gyoza that a coworker ordered and those were very good. For me, this ranks lowest on my list in terms of sushi quality out of the places in the metro I have tried (Wasabi Chi/Tao, Sukari, among others). I'm sure their stylized rolls are good, but pass on getting nigiri here and head to Wasabi if that's the route you want to go. read more
At first glance, I was feeling a bit apprehensive. I mean, strip mall restaurant, and sushi specifically. The inside is small, maybe 6 booths, two table/ booth combos, and seating at the bar. The place is a bit untidy as well, not dirty, just cluttered looking. So, 2 out of five for ambiance and curb appeal. The miso soup blew my mind, maybe it's cause it's so flipping cold outside or maybe it's cause it's really that good. It was just more flavorful than many misos I've had in the past. The sushi was fresh. There were pieces that were like butter, so smooth and soft and subtle. 5 out 5 for food. Service was friendly and attentive but sooooooo sloooooowwwwww. Sloth slow. I think its a time management issue. There were at least 4 chefs/ apprentices behind the sushi bar, but most of them were prepping. I think it would have been a little better if they had temporarily set aside the prep tasks for the future to address the current orders. So, 3 out of 5 for timeliness and service. This gives an overall 3.33 stars, but I'm going to round up to 4 cause I will probably go back. It's really all about freshness when it comes to sushi. read more

Came in on a Saturday night for a night out with friends at their recommendation. I was surprised at how small the place was with only about 6 booths and two tables (one table could seat up to 8) and a bar overlooking the sushi station. We had reservations and were seated within 5 minutes of arriving. Drink orders were taken promptly, but my boyfriend ordered a corona with lime that never came during our meal.we ordered the crab rangoons and we were disappointed. They were okay, but packed much crab or cream cheese filling. They had a few sushi specialty rolls on special for the night and we decided to try one along with two other specialty rolls. The specialty roll was the Super Star Roll (tempura lobster, mango, avocado, cream cheese topped with snow crab, crunchy flakes and fish eggs), the Crunchy 2 in 1 (shrimp tempura, avocado, cream cheese topped with spicy crabmeat and crunch flakes), and the Snow Man (shrimp tempura, cream cheese, mango inside, topped with crab meat and chef special coconut sauce). All of the specialty rolls were phenomenal. My favorite was the Super Star roll. It was absolutely delicious. The other two were great as well. The coconut in the snow man roll was a nice touch to complement the mango. The spicy crab meat on the 2 in 1 crunchy roll really made the flavors pop. The presentation of the sushi was creative and eye catching, something I have not experienced at any other sushi restaurant. I would recommend stopping by if you're in the area. This has now made my top 2 list of sushi restaurants in Des Moines. read more
My niece and I had a wonderful meal... Not the worst inland sushi I have ever eaten but not the best. The staff were adorable and very attentive. We did find the noise one place a little difficult to overcome. There was a table of 6 seated across from us as we came in and it was almost as if there were 60 of them. We could almost hear their conversation better than ours. And the windbag at the counter was not only torturing the couple sitting several seats from him but us as well. read more

Awesome hidden Japanese jem! Small shop with booth and sushi bar seating. Upon walking in we were immediately greeted and seated. We both ordered ramen. My H and I have been on the hunt for delicious ramen so this was a mission to accomplish. I ordered a standard chicken ramen and my H ordered the spicy beef ramen. Quick service for a Thursday night 7:00pm. Every booth and spot at the bar was filled. Didn't feel busy but it was a good pace of customers. Shop plays regular American music from the radio and sports on their two tvs. (Ha! Not very Japanese atmosphere-but whatever!) Had the crab rangoons for appetizers. They serve 5 in your order. Served hot and tasty; right amount of cream cheese and crunch. The ramen bowls were great. It had its own flavor, very different from other competitors. I would say the standard broth was bland compared to other places. They only use one broth for the "chicken" or "beef" option. I found the soup needed the "spicy" to it, so omitting it was making it bland. It was medium spicy, and I'm a person who likes mild. Comparable but more mild to the "99" at Krunkwich. My husband liked it. I found I liked the broth to enjoy the whole bowl. $11.95 per bowl. Pricy. Big bowl but they give you a lot of ramen and dressings. Found out they make their own ramen noodles in house. A++ for that. If you're looking to fix a ramen craving on the west side of town this is a good place! I'll be trying sushi next visit. read more

This review is going to focus on the All-you-can-eat special that is offered here on Mondays. I believe this is the only establishment in the Des Moines area that offers an All-you-can-eat sushi option. (I'm talking about real sushi, not the ones offered in buffets, because those are not qualified to be called sushi) The All-you-can-eat option is basically $20 per person for all regular rolls and they also created around 8 or 10 "semi-special" rolls that is available as well. Here is something I want to clarify because I was confused at first but asked for clarification. The All-you-can-eat menu you receive is split in half with the bottom half saying "For $10 a roll you can order these", then there's a sticker on the menu that says "Everything is included". Basically, on the pink All-you-can-eat menu they give you, everything is included! Now the sushi itself, yes it tasted good, but nothing extraordinary. One thing I suspected they would do, which they did, is pack extra rice on the rolls to get you full quicker. The more we ordered, the more I noticed this. I mean, I can't be mad at them because this is obviously a safety feature for them to not lose money, I hear that. Obviously we can't pick the rice off because they will comment on wasting which according to other reviewers, they take seriously; we just ate what we were given. On the menu it states any left over sushi will be charged to the patron $1 per piece. (You can take those pieces to go). I feel this could be implemented if there was an excessive amount wasted, but with other reviewers stating there is zero-tolerance, we were nervous about it and just ate everything we ordered. I'll try to remember everything we ordered, Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon, Yellowtail, Golden Spider, Eel avocado, Eel Cucumber, and a couple deep fried rolls which I forgot the names of. One thing I would also like to mention, there is an automatic gratuity fee charged if you choose the All-you-can-eat option. I believe it was 18% gratuity charged automatically, it was not stated on the menu, but they told us when we got our bill. I would probably not do the All-you-can-eat again, it was interesting to try once here. I will just stick to the ones offered in Minnesota, where you can get everything off the menu and even Sashimi. read more
