Love Taki... Not quite as much as I love Ohana's...but that might be more sentimental than anything! Taki is a standard Japanese Steakhouse. Like Tokyo in Ankeny they offer teppanyaki style dining with a tableside show at the grill... Or standard dining at a table where you can order the same items off a menu that are offered grillside. Taki is in a strip of businesses so parking isn't an issue. It's got a large lot. We were greeted immediately as we walked in and seated in a booth at the front of the restaurant. We were just hungry and didn't need the show. It was a little chilly inside, but that's Iowa weather and they has just opened the doors for dinner. In hindsight it might have been warmer by a grill. Lol Our server was fantastic. Personable and attentive. Along with fountain drinks we both ordered the New York strip & shrimp, fried rice, soup, salad (ginger dressing), and vegetables off the teppanyaki menu. One medium and one medium rare. The food was excellent as always! Make sure you try their yum yum sauce...! We left full and smiling... Another great visit to Taki! read more

Tried Taki for the first time and had a good time! We went on a Saturday evening and it was busy, so we had some wait time before our chef arrived. Our hibachi chef was hilarious, engaging, and kept us entertained the entire time! He definitely made our experience more enjoyable. As for the food, the vegetables and shrimp were good and flavorful. However, the fried rice wasn't my favorite. The texture was a bit gummy. The grill area is a little small and very tight! The chairs feel packed in to fit everyone around the table. A little more space would be nice. On the bright side, there was plenty of parking! read more

We ordered the fresh chicken and shrimp teppanyaki, and everything was absolutely delicious! Our chef was very talented, funny, and kept our whole group laughing the entire time! The fire show was a great touch and added to the fun atmosphere. Portions were generous, flavors were excellent, and the overall ambiance made the evening feel special. I'm already looking forward to coming back soon to try the sushi! read more

Staff is very friendly, food is good, but the place is filthy. I feel like at one point, it was a great experience, but now the condition of the restaurant have declined, unsure why this is. I really like a good Japanese steakhouse and I feel like this place has a lot of potential but the ambience inside is just plain filthy and it has a look to the Place like they just let it go. It's dark things look outdated and I feel like just the way it looks and feels inside one could say that the quality of the food could be perceived as less than satisfactory. I had a great experience, my family had a great experience, but the place just looks rundown and Filthy read more

Sat right away on a Friday night. Service was great, no complaints. Meal was fast fresh & delicious like always. I got the chicken tapenyaki & my girl got the ny strip & shrimp. I've been here several times and sat in the booths and hibachi grill area. The food is consistent and always good and cooked how you ordered. The hibachi chefs are entertaining and funny. I always come here exclusively for the sushi because they're perfectly made every time (not too much rice, just enough fish, etc.) and they're reasonably priced. If you're not sure what to get, let the sushi chefs know what you do/n't like and they'll try their best to make something you'll enjoy. Highly recommend this place for sushi! read more

Went here for lunch to try the Ramen and it did not disappoint! Had the shrimp tempura roll which didn't have too much rice and the tempura batter was delicious. I look forward to trying the hibachi next! Great service and experience! read more

Went with beloved friends for hibachi. So good! Steak and shrimp or just steak seemed to be the choices of the evening. Our waiter was great. Glasses were never empty, atmosphere is fun and the entire atmosphere is one of celebration. Love it! read more

The worst food service I've ever experienced. They forgot to serve our table of vegetarians for 2 hours and claimed that they didn't think we wanted dinner? Even though when we arrived I directly gave our tables order to the manager - just vegetables and rice. It should have been the easiest hibachi they made all day. Instead, our group had a miserable experience watching every other table that came in after us eat hibachi with a show while we sat there with no dinner. To add insult to injury, the incompetent staff at the restaurant messed up nearly every check we had and had the nerve to charge gratuity despite their abysmal service. Avoid at all costs, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A VEGETARIAN! read more

I originally visited this restaurant almost three years ago when I first moved to the area. I had been told that "Taki has the best sushi." Well, after two visits, three years apart, I still do not agree to that statement. Is their sushi bad? No, but it is not great either. The service was not very fast and they had to come back and clarify what one of us at the table had ordered. My husband and I had Happy Days, Dynamite, Kelburn and Kiwi Delight. The Kelburn probably had the best flavor but fell apart very easily. The middle would just drop out. The Happy Days was also not wrapped very tightly. The Dynamite came out with warm crab on the top which was very strange to me. The plus about here is that they have a very large selection of sushi so something for everyone. They always seem busy so expect a wait if you go. read more

I stopped at taki on a cold Friday evening with high expectations. I enjoyed the salad and the Maki roll thst we ordered was great. A California roll is pretty easy to make, but they did a great job with it. I wss less impressed with the grill food. The steak was pretty bland, and the rice was meh. I think I'll try a few more rolls the next time I stop by. read more

Sushi and martini Wednesday! This place was packed and the music was cranked up. I suppose I could have done with a more attentive waiter and less volume on the pop music. I still love the sushi here and our party of 5 stuffed. A couple for themselves meals but all our orders came with soup and salad. We.pigged. Out. Yum. I got the yummy roll and the Kelburn. The Kelburn was new to me and I pushed that one up to a 10. Yum!- The regular rolls and martinis are discounted a little on Wednesdays. I'll go ahead ava stop talking and past the mouth watering pictures now. read more

My wife and I eat at Taki all the time. Actually we were more than your average goers. There was a time where the service was good and the people who own the establishment was nice. The wife who is one of the owners has flipped her wig and has become one of the biggest b**ches on the planet. So one day we go into the establishment to eat. We noticed that our food was rushed and they didn't apply the normal sauce on our chicken. The waitress at the time told us she wanted to redo our food after we told her that it was ok. She went to wife and mentioned that we were not happy with our meal. She told her employee to take the food from us so she could give it to someone else. This was after we had it in our possession for about 20 min and had eaten out of it. The waitress explained that it wasn't right for her to do that and told us to eat what we could while waiting on our other order because were paying for it. We swore that we weren't going back to the restaurant ever again. But, it's my wife's favorite place and thought to give it another try. COVID-19 came along and the next time we had to order our food. Because we had the bad experience from last time, we decided to check our food before purchasing it. We asked the guy who helped us if we could check the food first. She looked over being nosy and asked us what's going on. I told her I'm checking my food just to make sure it came out the way we like it. She catches an immediate attitude and says don't touch it I'll touch the food. As I'm looking at this crazy lady. She's telling me that if we didn't want the food she was going to give it to someone else. Umm... what ??? Lol. I find it strange that the food isn't prepared fresh and that you might be eating recycled food, after someone else has coughed and breathed all on the food. Our last and final time which currently happened. We walked in after meeting our daughter and her boyfriend there. We arrived possibly 4 minutes after them. As we walked in the owner/manager met us at the door, asking how many. We told her two and asked for a booth. She asked if we had a reservation. When we told her no she said we had to have one to sit in a booth. There was 4 booths open at the time and they just opened. I didn't think about it and she walked us to a standard table. When we approached the table we noticed our daughter sitting in a booth with her boyfriend. As she walked away my wife asked how she was able to get a booth without a reservation. Miss nosy walks back not knowing that she's our daughter and says they arrived early. LIES!!! she completely lost our trust after that and we won't be returning. This lady is very rude, lies, has no professionalism. I also believe she's racist. The rest of her staff as been helpful and said she's greedy and always rude. I recommend that you don't eat there if you want a great experience go to Ohana Steakhouse. Checkout my latest post about Takai on Guilty One and there's bad reviews on Simply Revoked podcast about the owner and how she's serving old food after reheating it. read more

Great Sushi! We ate in the dining room rather than a Hibachi table, ordered an array of sushi to share and all of them were good. We had the Dragon Role, Absolute Fish Roll, D Rock Special, Yummy Roll, and Volcano Role. My personal favorite was the Yummy Role! D Rock special was the least favorite of the table because it was a little bland, but add some sauce to it and it tasted fine. D Rock Role is a great option for someone that's not a big Sushi Fan (its simple and no raw). The Absolute fish Role was very light and would make a good lunch option. We ordered 5 rolls for 3 people and barely had anything left. Dragon, Absolute, and Yummy Rolls are big portions. Volcano and D Rock rolls are smaller portions. read more

I have to give this place 5 stars for everything! 5 stars for the space 5 stars for the food And a thousand stars for my lovely waiter!!!! Food was great. The Yummy Roll was literally YUMMMMY. I think it's the best roll here. I'm kinda picky when it comes to sushi and rolls but this one really deserves the credit. The Spider Roll was ok, not so special but good enough. The Tunaaaaaa. Well it's supposed to be Tuna Salad, but I'm not really a fan of vegetables and healthy stuff so I just ask them to prepare me just tuna, no salad needed. I love the fact that they gave me exactly what I wanted, not to mention that the tuna was super super goooooood! It's really really fresh. Believe me, you will feel it when you taste it. I came at lunch time so the restaurant was not very busy. Maybe that's why the waiter took care of me sooooo well. To be honest he is what I love most about the place read more

I've always liked Taki but last night kind of left me a little unhappy. It appears that if you go and sit on the dining side versus the grill side, the quality of the food decreases drastically. This is not food cooked at the grill and brought out to you, I believe it's just cooked up in the back with minimal cooking efforts but they're still charging you grill prices. I paid almost 40$ for a meal that fell incredibly short. I ordered steak and shrimp and received tiny little shrimp that were nothing like the bigger shrimp you get at the grill, my steak had zero flavor and the food overall was not very hot or fresh. I could understand the change in quality if you were paying a reduced price for dining side versus the grill as you get no show, etc but why charge the same if the food is going to be prepared in a subpar manner? This just seems unethical and ruins the dining experience, completely. Just let it be known as a warning that if you desire fresh, TRUE hibachi from here, just wait for a spot at the grill. Unfortunate but lesson learned! read more

This is the place for good Sushi but that's it. All the drinks were really good but I was disappointed with the rest of the food. Chicken and and steak were way over cooked. The scallops had sand on them so they obviously didn't wash them before cooking. We weren't actually able to watch them cook the food at the hibachi grill. This may have made it more enjoyable but I'm sure the food would have tasted the same. read more

I haven't been back here in about ten years so my husband and I decided to try this place out for lunch. My husband had never been here so he was excited to see that they had tonkatsu-don on the menu. But when he got the meal, he was not impressed at all. Quite disappointed actually but you know what made up for it? The Service. Our server was really nice and accommodating. So thank you to him. The Service: 4/5 At first it took awhile to actually place our order because they only had two servers but once we had our orders in, everything started getting better service wise. The Food: Nam # Ate- 3/5 Hubby wanted to order this because it had his name in it. It wasn't the best sushi but it was better than some other places we've tried. But for Iowa, that doesn't say much. Tonkatsu-don(Pork Katsu Don)- 0/5 why the zero? My husband grew up with a Japanese step-father. He knows what this is supposed to taste like. Also, hubby is from Hawaii where this is basically served everywhere. Everywhere. With that being said, this dish they served was wayyyy too salty and was served on a plate. Donburis are served in bowls typically. But either way plate or bowl, it was so salty that hubby couldn't even dig in to try the tonkatsu itself. The portion was huge, but that was the only plus. Anyway, our server noticed we didn't like it and asked if there was anything he could change it out with. We were okay with not changing it out but our son wanted more tempura shrimp, so we just exchanged it for an appetizer order of tempura shrimp. Teppenyaki NY Steak lunch- 3/5 it wasn't bad but wasn't the best. The portion was big. Tempura Shrimp Bento- 3/5 Our Son liked it. Nothing different from your typical bento. Everything came with soup and salad. We probably wouldn't come back here unless it was for an event for someone but at least now we know! And remember, everyone's tastes are different! read more

I have had several visits here over the past few years. I have always had great food and service. It is one of my favorite places to visit. I normally sit in the general seating area or at the sushi bar. I do see lots of people ordering carry out food and that would be an excellent choice. Lots of options even for the non sushi loving person. I still get sushi rolls that are cooked as I have not grown the taste of raw sushi yet. I highly recommend anything with the spicy mayo sauce. (I think that that's what I crave every time) read more

I have only eaten here once and did so after being told by multiple people how good it is. I was not disappointed, their food quality was great and staff friendly. The location itself is very nicely decorated and provided a relaxing eating experience for us. There were hardly any other customers when we ate, we came in during lunch hours. Parking was convenient due to the large lot. Not only were their sushi options good, their appetizers were amazing as well. I would come back again mainly for their appetizers. Their sushi is good, but so are mainly other sushi restaurants I live closer to. read more

Went for a family gathering to Taki. Normally good is Great but not this time. We had a party of 11 and all of our steak was not edible ( like leather)You couldn't even chew it. Staff didn't care and surly didn't want to hear and were quickly to dismiss us. Owner did not want to make eye contact just wanted us to leave. Will not return. I was feeling seriously out of sorts. So of course I wanted sushi. The first resturant was closed, like lockbox on the door closed. Second we went to Taki. I haven't been here for 10 years. It was good then but expensive. And it still is. The server was there on the spot and very attentive. Ok he brought Herself a chicken tempura instead if shrimp. But, they fixed it immediately. It was so pretty and she was almost able to finish it. I ordered one of everything and ate half of herself's. It was delicious. We will be back. read more

Usually this is a great place to eat. Never a bad experience until tonight. We waited for our drinks, the drinks barely had any alcohol in them. Our reservation was 645, didn't get our drinks until 715. Portions are all pretty good and I leave full. Not tonight. Small portions of vegetables, small portions of meat. Cook wasn't very friendly, not very talkative or fun. You come to these places and expect a fun experience. Tonight not so much. The waitress was terrible. Slow. And laughed at us when we complained about our mixed drinks. Only good thing is they offered free cheesecake for those of us who had bdays. read more

We came to Taki for sushi on a Friday night. We're able to sit down right away at the sushi bar, the place was relatively busy however. We had 2 rolls each one special and one basic, which got us soup and salad added. We also started with the spicy garlic edamame; I really enjoyed that as they were coated in chili's, if you like spicy get them. As far as the rolls, they were actually really good and I usually get tempura but tonight was mostly raw and I liked all the rolls. The naked roll however was the best by far, I would recommend that for sure. Had a few saki bombs at the bar which was fun. Will definitely be back at some point. read more

Lots of my coastal kids would not trust sushi in the midwest, let alone, Des Moines, but I decided to be the dare devil. Price: Be prepared to spend about $15 - 20 for a simple meal. Rolls are around $13 which is pretty typical. Parking: HUGE lot. Can't miss it. Service: Chill. Nothing special. Drinks & Food: I ordered a roll, the least sauciest I could find because I love the taste of fresh sushi that isn't drenched in mayo and other sauces. Unfortunately, it was still drenched in sauce. If I came next time, I'd probably order something cooked and asked for the sauce on the side. Notes: If I were REALLY craving sushi, I'd come again, otherwise, I can pass. read more

Why is teppanyaki offered for lunch, if we're not able to actually get teppanyaki? You can order it, but can't sit at the grill? Whatever that means. Oh, and it comes covered in some weird gravy sauce, which is nasty. This place was a total disappointment, and pretty gross over all. I ordered a "bento" box. Got served old rice and tough chicken. I mean, who messes up on something as easy as teriyaki chicken? On top of that, we ordered some "sushi" and "mussels" that came out looking identical. By that I mean they both came out with some old frozen imitation crab, and cream cheese mixture globbed on top. It was so unappetizing that I had to cancel out the other 2 sushi rolls I ordered. Overall disappointed. read more

Meet a family member at this place to sit down and have a good meal. However, that was not my experience. 1st time at this place and I will say that the waiter was very polite and apologetic for the unprofessional manager. The food took forever, as we were told that the DoorDash orders were the priority. When I received my shrimp fried rice... it was a huge plate of plain rice with 5 little shrimp on top. Went to Taki last night with a group of 8 for hibachi. Our cook was HAMMERED drunk, was bragging about it to the table, got our orders wrong (still payed for what we ordered even though we didn't get it), he was BRAGGING about how hammered he was, he bragged about how he smokes pot at work, how his moms the boss so he can't get fired, was drinking WHILE COOKING OUR FOOD, Forgot exttra rice, extra veggies, screwed up our eggs three separate times (which is exactly what he isn't supposed to do with those trick things), and forgot one of my friends LOBSTER. Taki is too expensive to be expected to put up with that. A little mind blowing that they would allow that kind of behavior coming from their chef, who cooks food LIVE, and plays around with fire. $100 right down the drain if you ask me. read more
