Didn't snap a pick of the apps/main courses but he got a dumpling app, Tom Kha, pad see ew. I got the ginger duck and mango stick rice to-go (pictured). I really wanted to like this spot more, I really did. But certain items are hit-and-miss. The dumplings were good, but the sauce for the Ginger Duck was very salty, like licking a salt cube. The duck itself was cooked well and was tender, and the rice that came with it was good too. My favorite thai in Ithaca and this region. If you go in early enough for dinner my experience has been there is plenty of seating. I couldn't be more thrilled to recommend this establishment. Always clean and wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. They have vegan options and seem willing to accommodate for dietary restrictions. In the grand scheme of Ithaca's food scene, Thai Basil has always been fine... but it doesn't really offer anything exciting. I recently ordered from Thai Basil again (I've had it plenty of times over the years, but it's never been a favorite) because I needed somewhere different (besides Taste of Thai Express in Ithaca or Thai Elephant in Watkins Glen) for Thai food while I worked from home during this pandemic... and I'm really trying to support local restaurants as best I can. I'm boosting this rating from a 2/5 to a 3/5 because the delivery of my order through Ithaca To Go was actually quite speedy. If it wasn't for the promptness of the restaurant though in coordinating delivery via ITG, this would definitely be a 2/5 rating. Upon receiving my order today, I was reminded why I stopped really ordering from or going to Thai Basil... it's because I always feel like I have to doctor everything up, because everything really lacks in flavor. It's Thai food! How does it lack in flavor?! On top of that, there was very little beef in my pad thai. Just a couple of fairly small pieces. I had actually asked for both a bit of extra egg and a bit of extra ground peanuts in my pad thai, so I paid for extra meat while ordering online to help cover that cost (since there are no other "extra..." options to choose from). I added a note on my order to specify what I was doing, but that I still wanted beef in my pad thai. That said, I don't feel like I even got a normal helping of beef added to my order. *sigh* TL;DR I'm trying to support local restaurants during this pandemic, so opted to switch up where I ordered my Thai food from when going through Ithaca To Go. Unfortunately, Thai Basil really lacks flavor in their dishes, and I was reminded why I haven't visited or ordered from them for delivery recently. Good service, yes , although it was a bit strange to be told that we had to tip in cash (we did).... But when the food is this good I overlook the quirks. I got the basil duck- it was crispy and the vegetables cooked perfectly. Stir fry always makes stuff limp - like beans - not here. The restuarant is located in the old location of Asiatic gardens, my fav sport growing up here. But the decor and food is not old school - it's possibly the best restaurant ithaca .... I don't know who these people are that gave it a 1, you must have bad karma The only negative - if I am honest - is that we ordered the spring rolls (the fresh ones, not fried) and they were tiny. The guy working there today not only didn't honor the request but assumed it was because I wanted extra Thai iced tea. Horrific experience. Restaurant is closed today because chef is issing. That's not the issue. THEY DID NOT UPDATE THIS ON GOOGLE, UBER EATS, NOR THEIR OWN WEBSITE. Great Thai spot in Ithaca, just off of the Commons. The indoor ambience was comfortable and the lighting just right. The food might be the best Thai I've eaten since living in Bangkok. We ordered Pad Kee Mao with chicken and w Basil Fried Rice. So. GOOD. The portion size was decent but not large, and the price was a bit high for Thai food but it was worth every penny. Came here on a Monday afternoon as a group of 4. We were seated right away and had our food within 10 minutes of ordering. The Thai iced coffee was tasty and I highly recommend. I got the Pad See Aew with beef and it was wonderful. Came with plenty of beef and noodles!! One of my friends got the Paddon Curry with tofu and said it was good with a hint of spice. The only critique was that there wasn't a lot of tofu in the dish. One of my friends got the pad Thai with chicken. The noodles looked similar to normal spaghetti noodles but was very happy with the dish. (Plenty of chicken in the dish!!) Extensive menu with multiple specials to boot - settled on the Spring Roll to start ($6), Duck Over Rice ($19) and a glass of local red ($8). Starter is enough for two people to share; tightly packed veggies paired alongside a hearty peanut sauce. Entree is a large portion of marinated duck on top of a bed of steamed rice. Tender meat that wasn't too fatty and flowed into the rice well. Assorted greens didn't add much. Service started off well, then waned towards the end of the night. The food was prepared and served within 10 minutes, which is extremely efficient in my opinion. The taste was flavorful, but the portion size was somewhat okay. We also ordered the Mango Sticky Rice and salad. The sticky rice was warm and the mangoes well complemented it. The salad was served with an interesting sauce. Overall, this is a great Thai restaurant in the Commons. It is somewhat far from Cornell, but it is worth the effort in making an occasional visit to try the different options. A solid Thai restaurant one block off the Commons in downtown Ithaca - and one of the nicest Thai restaurants I've ever been in, with a lovely décor featuring shimmering gold wall sculptures and an inviting feel where new meets traditional. I had the chicken ka-prow, my favorite Thai dish, and this one didn't disappoint. The flavor was quite good, and I liked that their recipe included string beans, giving the dish a nice crunch. I also ordered my dish extra-spicy (five on the one-to-five scale), and the dish was indeed spicy but more American-spicy than Thai-spicy, so be sure to specify if you want your dish on the "traditionally fiery" side. I wish there was more chicken in the dish but, all in all, a solid dish. The service here is friendly and efficient, and the kitchen works fast, so if you're in a rush, you can be in-and-out quickly. A lot of carry-out orders were being carried out, a good sign that Thai Basil is popular amongst the folks living in downtown Ithaca. They're definitely worth a visit. read more

This is one of the best thai restaurants I've been to overall, not just in Ithaca. The food is very flavorful, spicy enough to add to the flavor but not overwhelming. I loved that they have not only traditional green curry and pad thai, but items that I've never seen before at other restaurants. I ordered Khao Soy, which according to the menu is from the north Thai cuisine. It was very warming and quite flavorful. I loved the noodles with vegetables and thick gravy. For dessert we got something we also never saw at other places - coconut cakes. It was not too sweet but very flavorful. Apparently because it's hard to make very few restaurants actually make these. I almost wonder if all of the folks familiar with Thai food in the kitchen were out with COVID? Or if they had an ingredient shortage? Tom kha gai - coconut milk soup - was overly sweet and lemony and watery Mango sticky rice - rice was crispy when it should be gooey We also got peanut sauce chicken that was good, but way sweeter than normal. Thai Basil has a very cute and quirky interior that makes the dine in experience very fun. The staff are all very friendly but our food took quite a bit of time to come out! I really love thai iced tea and their drink did not disappoint! I personally really liked both dishes that we ordered. Our first night in Ithaca, we were scoping out a place for a nice birthday dinner for my girlfriend. The first place we checked out was closed, so we ubered into town and luckily stumbled into Thai Basil. My girlfriend and I recently were in Thailand, and we can be picky about the Thai food we eat in the US. A lot of restaurants serve all the same items that taste just like each other without the freshness that Thai food is known and appreciated for. We ordered a bottle of wine. They offer a nice variety for a very decent price (most around $32). The pinot noir was great and smooth, especially for the cheap price tag. We ordered all of our favorites. We got the Royale Tom Yum which I had never heard of and was basically a creamier Tom Yum. It was delicious and my only regret was not ordering the larger size. The seafood inside was all perfectly cooked and not overdone. Second, we got the som tum. The papaya was crisp and fresh, and it had the right amount of heat. The salty, sweet, sour balance was perfect. For main courses, we couldn't decide so we ordered the soft shell crab pad phong karee (perfectly crispy friend soft shell crab covered in amazing karee sauce), green curry with duck (perfected, fresh, and the duck was still crispy and delicious in the curry) and the pad see aew with pork (amazingly done, nicely chewy noodles and fresh vegetables to go with it). We got to talking with the owner and discovered that his wife is from Thailand. He was extremely friendly and kind, and offered us a few recommendations around town when he found out we weren't Ithaca locals. Which is a shame, because this is my new favorite Thai restaurant I've been to in the US. I may have to venture back out to Ithaca at some point, mostly to be able to eat here again.
