I came in on a slow weeknight where there was only 1 other patron there, which made for a relatively quiet dining experience. It does have a darker and more intimate atmosphere, which I thought would be a good for dates. The menu was typical Thai cuisine and we started off with the Papaya Salad with peanuts, followed by the Tom Yum soup. The main course consisted of the Kang Phed Ped Duck and Pineapple Fried Rice. The meal was certainly filling and while good, I can't say it was anything that I couldn't taste or get from other Thai restaurants. Perhaps I need to try other dishes. Overall however, this is a decent Thai restaurant to try with friends or a date. It's probably one of the better restaurant choices in this area. It was okay, so I said I would come back and dine in because the restaurant looked nice when I went and picked up my food. Second visit. I went for dinner and parking was very difficult to find so I ended up parking across the street in the Wawa lot hoping my car didn't get towed. The place was pretty empty for dinner. You could tell they do a lot of takeout business. Waitress/Service was good, The food portions are small. The food itself is not flavorful. It's just enough not to be bland. I came during lunch and it was dead! Surprising cause it is in collingswood. I pushed forward and tried it anyways. Service was great, I was the only customer for the first half of my meal, then they got another family and that was it. Everything was clean and quick. Parking is street parking and super cheap for the meter, $1 for 2 hours. The venue itself is larger than it looks, clean bathrooms. Cute seating arrangements. Food: I got the lunch special which is you get to select soup/salad, appetizer, entree. Hard to beat this deal which again was surprising why I was the only one in the restaurant. I got the tom kha soup which was salty! Oh boy, SOO salty, but good amount of protein and peppers, etc. it was not as spicy as I wanted but they have to cater to the general public. The fried tofu was cooked well but the sweet sauce should've been a peanut sauce (my personal suggestion.) would've been more Thai and more appetizer friendly, the current sauce makes it overly sweet like a dessert. The crab meat drunken noodles from the dinner specials of the day menu were the perfect level of spicy! There was enough noodles to split between two people and since we had an appetizer, we had some noodles leftover. The fried vegetable dumplings had a similar flavor to scallion pancakes which I loved! The outer layer was excellently crisped but there was a doughy layer just beneath. My mom and I came back to Thai Basil for a second time and loved it just as much as the first time. We were the first ones in, as we came just as they opened, but it filled up very quickly. Came here this past Saturday with two friends around 6:30PM and there was no wait for dine-in. A lot of people were waiting for their take out orders. They practiced social distancing well-- the tables were spaced out. They have straws available if you do not feel comfortable drinking straight from the glass cup. We ordered the red Penang chicken curry, beef drunken noodles, and shrimp pad Thai. Best pad thai I've had in a while! It has a light sweetness to it. I normally don't like peanuts in my food, but it worked really well in their pad thai dish. The drunken noodles were delicious. If you have a low spice tolerance- I would not recommend this dish. I enjoyed the red penang curry as well. It is a thin soup consistency, but has a creamy flavor. My friends did not like that the curry sauce was thin because they prefer thicker style curries. I prefer thick curry as well, but the flavor of this curry was on point! Portions here are smaller compared to other restaurants I've eaten at, but it was the perfect amount for one meal. This place is great!!! Im pretty picky with Thai food because where I am from theres really good Thai options and have not found the same in the Philly area. The entrees here were amazing!! The Pad thai was on point!! The spices and the sauce of the noodles was amazing. We liked it so much we ordered one to go for lunch the next day. The pineapple fried rice was also very good - and spices done right. Panang curry was also amazing. The spot itself is very cute as well and the service was great. Im giving one less star due to the Apps - I did not find them as great especially the chicken sataay and felt like it was missing something. Decided to try some take out from here. I told my husband I had a taste for some Tom Kha soup. Apparently not all Tom Kha soups are equal in taste, served in abundance or at least by the container full. This one seemed to be very sweet which I didn't like and the container wasn't even full. I also got the house salad with peanut dressing.....didn't like that either. My husband and I split an order of the street noodles. They didn't taste bad, but they were very dry. Celebrated a family birthday here so we had lots of different taste and diet preferences. Food was excellent and server informed us that most menu items can be made vegan. Lots of vegan protein options as well (mock duck, mock chicken, tofu). The omnivores loved their meat and the veg heads loved their vegan meals. We got take out. I had the "Speciality" shrimp. Small portion, very blah taste and cost almost $20. I would have given it at best a 2 but the other, non "specialty" food was fine. Avoid the specials and go with plain old pad thai or drunken noodles. And yeah ... not rushing back! 24 hours later....3 out of the 6 who ate this food had gastro--intestinal issues today. I'd say the food here at Thai Basil is decent. I'm always on the lookout for a good Khao soi (or as it is on their menu, kaow soi), and I came here to give it a try. For an appetizer I had the chicken curry puffs, which were excellent (although I wish there was more of the onion garnish on the side). The khao soi was okay. The flavors were alright, but the noodles were definitely undercooked, which was disappointing. I took the meal to go, and in all honesty, it was better the second day because after a few minutes in the microwave I no longer had to worry about undercooked noodles. If I could, I'd rate it a 3.5, as the curry puffs were excellent. If the noodles had been properly cooked in the khao soi it would be a four. Not the best, but not the worst either. read more

Foodie friends from California are in town for a week, so we have been indulging in some fun eats in and around Philly and South Jersey. Last night we had torrential rains and got shut out of at least two restaurants in a row - once closed early, the second ran out of food. We were drenched and hungry and we saw Thai Basil lit up in the darkness like a beacon in the night. We ordered soups and different curries and everything was delicious. Nothing was left on our plates. I tried the silver noodle soup. Lovely and light, though I wish the carrots were less crunchy and more tender and that there was lots more noodles. It was a quiet Tuesday night when I stopped in for dinner around 6:30. I was seeing a show nearby and wanted something quick that wasn't pizza. It was freeeeeeezing and Thai Basil answered the call with something to warm me up. Inside it's cute and there are some big poofy booths for large groups. Service was a little disjointed; I think just one person was working the front of the house. There is a $30 fixed price menu that's not super exciting if you're dining solo, but definitely worth a look if you can share the appetizer and dessert. I went with a spring roll (a little bland, but crispy and not too greasy at least) and Indonesian noodles. Rice noodles were not on my mind this night, and the "lo mein" ish noodles in this dish really hit the spot. Good chew, not too mushy, and really coated with sauce. There were a lot of different components that worked well together - crispy stir fried veggies, sauteed chicken (I wish pork had been an option), and spicy/tangy sauce. I hate to write this, but something has changed at Thai Basil. It was my favorite Thai restaurant in the area and I ordered from it liberally during the pandemic. We even chose to dine in there for a family event this spring. But the last couple times we've eaten there, something is off. It feels like they have a different chef. The food is not very flavorful anymore, the meat is tough and the portions are smaller. The noodle dishes in particular have seriously gone down hill. Hopefully they can get the chef back that they had before. Otherwise, we'll be looking for a new go-to Thai restaurant. read more

The lunch special sign outside Thai Basil caught my eye today as I was strolling down Haddon Ave. For 8.95, the lunch special includes a soup, an appetizer and an entree. I decided to stop in for lunch with my mom and was pleasantly surprised by the classy decor inside. There is plenty of seating, including booths for more private dining. Service was extremely prompt and we were seated immediately. The lunch menu actually has a lot of options. I decided on the Tom Kha Gai soup as I was looking to try something new. This was awesome- a totally unique flavor experience as it was creamy and tart but still savory. The main flavors of the broth are coconut and citrus and the soup is filled with chicken and mushrooms. I highly recommend this! I then had a vegetable spring roll which was good as well-the dipping sauce for it was delightful. The serving size of both the soup and spring roll were pretty small, but it was actually the perfect amount as a starter for lunch. For my entree I decided on the drunken noodles. These were so good! The noodles were chopped so it was much easier to eat than pad Thai. The flavors here were pretty complex as well--the recipe is printed on the walls of the restaurant and I was surprised to see how many different ingredients this recipe has. The portion of this was perfect for lunch, and combined with the starters, very filling. The lunch special at Thai Basil is definitely something to check out if you want to try something new at a very reasonable price! read more
