The lunch special sign outside Thai Basil caught my eye today as I was strolling down Haddon Ave. For 8.95, the lunch special includes a soup, an appetizer and an entree. I decided to stop in for lunch with my mom and was pleasantly surprised by the classy decor inside. There is plenty of seating, including booths for more private dining. Service was extremely prompt and we were seated immediately. The lunch menu actually has a lot of options. I decided on the Tom Kha Gai soup as I was looking to try something new. This was awesome- a totally unique flavor experience as it was creamy and tart but still savory. The main flavors of the broth are coconut and citrus and the soup is filled with chicken and mushrooms. I highly recommend this! I then had a vegetable spring roll which was good as well-the dipping sauce for it was delightful. The serving size of both the soup and spring roll were pretty small, but it was actually the perfect amount as a starter for lunch. For my entree I decided on the drunken noodles. These were so good! The noodles were chopped so it was much easier to eat than pad Thai. The flavors here were pretty complex as well--the recipe is printed on the walls of the restaurant and I was surprised to see how many different ingredients this recipe has. The portion of this was perfect for lunch, and combined with the starters, very filling. We came in fairly late for a Saturday evening but were happily greeted and seated quickly. Started with spring rolls and boy are they good. Crisp outside and overloaded with veggies inside. No complaints here. For the main dish, I ordered the Pad See Ew. I loved the noodles and the veggies were very fresh. My wife ordered the Thai red curry. I tried a bit of it and the curry was out of this world. A bit sweeter than I expected but delicious nonetheless. I totally forgot what our guests ordered because I was so concentrated on my own meal. Once I was done stuffing my face I realized we were all part of the "clean plate club." The only thing that I MIGHT take off a single star for was the dessert. Two of our guests got the special which included dessert to which they ordered the double chocolate cake and baklava. Now, I'm not taking off a star because I don't go to Thai restaurants looking for desserts so I wasn't expecting much and neither really delivered anything of substance. Thai basil is DA BOMB DOT COM. Talk about treating your taste buds. I've been a number of times, and have yet to find something to complain about. The roti is a must buy. Flaky and crispy, it resembles the encasing of a pot pie, and is accompanied by a mouth-watering peanut based sauce. Our table had to put in another couple orders last night so everyone could have 2nds (or in my case, 5ths). The vegetable dumplings were also worth ordering. For entrees, I generally stick to the pad Thai and drunken noodles. They give a pretty good portion and cook it as good as I've ever had it. Tried the mock duck and was pleasantly surprised. My husband and I went to Thai Basil in cute Collingswood last night. We were in the mood for Italian, but two restaurants were full and only seating those with reservations. So, we stopped in here. It wasn't too busy at all and the Thai Red Curry chicken was the best that I've ever had. Now, we don't eat Thai food often, but I do love Thai Red Curry Chicken. It was excellent! The staff was also really nice. It's a BYOB. We each had a glass of the Thai Tea -- delicious. My husband had the Yom Tom shrimp, with was tasty, but not what he thought he was ordering (not really there fault). The service was excellent. They were quick and very friendly. The decor is cool and the place has a nice vibe/atmosphere... it is initmate, yet modern. I really enjoyed it... it was a pleasant surprise and we are very happy that we found them. When you go, you gotta have the Thai Red Curry Chicken!!!!! Oh, we also had Tiramisu for dessert. Seating/Service= Overall it's simple and somewhat modern. There could be a few areas in the seating that could be tweaked, for instance the next table over is close enough to chair bump you. The service comes with a smile and the food was out in a flash. I did notice a lot of people coming in for pick up so while at times they seem dead, they still have people checking them out. My meal = I've been to Thai Basil 3 times and hey, this is the place I went to the first time I had Thai so if you're like me, try the Thai Basil Treasure appetizer for a variety. It is $15 and is good for a newbie. The Treasure are little snacks (2 each) chicken satay, veggie spring roll, bangkok shu mai, and (my favorite) thai chicken curry puff. Along with the Treasure are 3 minimal dipping sauces that will serve for 2 people or as 1 small lady-like entree (lady-like, as in not enough for a grown man!). Thai Basil skimps on the dipping sauces for this appetizer and in 1 of my 3 visits found that the bangkik shu mai was overcooked. Regardless, the other bites were tasty and the chicken was perfect. On my 3rd visit I upgraded my newbie status to the Massaman Curry: Masaman curry paste, potato, onion, carrot and cashews in creamy coconut milk. It is served with jasmine rice and has a choice of meat, I went with chicken. Believe it or not, I liked this better reheated 2 days later. That's not to say the dish was bad, it was actually pretty good...a simple 3 stars. It was a decent serving, worth the 11.95 since I did have leftovers but it the coconut milk that drowned the flavor. I definately will be back to Thai Basil but I'll try a different dish because I think they have more potential. read more

This food is way better than it has any business being for the prices they charge here. I've eaten at far more expensive Thai places that don't even compare with Thai Basil. I love that they offer mock chicken and mock duck in addition to tofu (all of which are delicious!); a lot of places only offer tofu for vegetarians. The menu ingredients are clearly labeled, so vegetarians won't accidently order something with fish in the sauce. The veg section of the menu is pretty extensive. If you get the chance, definitely check out their lunch specials. This is a very affordable spot for going out to eat with coworkers. read more

Thai food is one of my favorites; however I almost always just get green curry. Today I tried something different: drunken noodles and...yum! Even when I was full (and it's a good sized portion), I kept eating because I loved the taste in my mouth. *This is why I'm far from beach ready*. First, it is a BYOB. The environment is nice. Not too loud, a bit romantic almost. I'm a fan of their decoration. The staffs are very nice. I let them order my food every time. Plus, I have never had anything I don't like there. Here are some recommendations: Appetizer: Kung Hom Pa (Shrimp wrapped in noodles are fried to crispy) Main dish: Basil Fried Rice (It's my favorite dish on the menu) Drinks: Coconut water (For some reason, their coconut water is more refreshing. Plus, they actually put coconut in there) The only downside I can see is the limited options on the menu. I understand it's a small restaurant but I would love to see some new dishes/specials soon. My sister wanted to come her for her birthday dinner. I had never been before, but was excited to try some local Thai food. This district is BYOB, but of course we dropped the ball and forgot to bring a bottle with us. It was fine. I was more worried about eating the Tom Kha soup. The menu was quite extensive. But, all I got was a double serving of the soup... which was amazing! it tasted just as it should have. My mother ordered some duck, and was very pleased with her entree. My sister had some sort of seafood, she said that was "different". My father had crab pad thai which he surprisingly loved. I saw green tea tiramisu on the menu and I was sooo excited to try it. The presentation of it on the plate was nice. I took my first bite, and it was the most disgusting thing i had ever tasted. It had such a weird taste to it. It didn't taste like green tea at all. I am not sure how to even really explain what it tasted like, but i was disappointed. Now upon billing, out total was 89 dollars. My dad had gotten a gift card for Christmas for $100. He gave that to the staff to use to cover the bill. They came back and said that it was declined. He had to end up using another card. When he got home he called the bank that the gift card was associated with, and asked why the card was declined. The establishment ran to card for $101 dollars, instead of just the $89... very shady! so just be careful around billing time. Idk if this was a misunderstanding, or just fraud! read more

Noooo! Worst thing when you're craving a specific cuisine and you're further away from the place you trust will deliver on flavor. Ordered chicken pad Thai and steamed chicken dumplings for takeout. This was my first and last time trying this place unfortunately. Both dishes were very bland and light on substance. Dumplings weren't too bad but not good enough to save a disappointing take out meal. Noodles were completely broken into tiny pieces and over cooked. I went in for lunch and got their lunch special. I got their vegetable tom yum soup and fried wontons to start. I haven't had tom yum in forever and this one was super good, lots of lemongrass flavor! Wontons were Friday and filled with chicken. If you love flat rice noodles, get their drunken noodle. It has a sweet soy sauce taste to it and I love that! It has a spice but it wasn't spicy enough for me so I had to ask for the chili sauce to compensate. Get their Thai iced.. it is bombbbbb! Came here for a late dinner with the parents. Aesthetics wise, this place isn't for me. The restaurant was dimly lit. I never took an issue at other dimly lit restaurants but I had to strain my eyes and my mother was really struggling here. We were in the back corner and that one candle did not help! At one point I had to pull out my phone to make sure we were reading the menus correctly. As expected when the food arrived I couldn't really see my food to the degree I wanted to. I can make out the shape but I wanted to see the texture. My mom commented that if she actually saw her plate it would've tasted better. I can't complain about my pad see ew though, it was okay. Portion size, slightly below average. It also didn't help that with all of this hassle we were told we had to switch tables to accommodate a larger crowd who just made a reservation. read more

This restaurant is close to where I work and the only Thai place in town so I decided to give it a shot. Last week, I ordered the chicken pad Thai to-go at lunch time. The dish was all right but nothing to write home about. Why I returned for seconds after not being impressed the first time, I'm not sure. It was kind of like one of those first dates that go okay, but the cocktails make you think you enjoyed the evening more than you really did and you agree to go out again. You then spend the whole second date wondering why you didn't trust your instincts while simultaneously planning your exit strategy. Such was the same with my vegetable pad Thai at lunch today. As soon as I took my first bite I knew I just wasn't that into it. To its credit, the veggie pad Thai spared me from corny jokes and emergency phone calls to friends from the bathroom. I went to Thai Basil on a Saturday night. I give them props for being the only Thai place in the area. Dessert was wonderful (I believe it was coconut custard. It was not too coconutty, served warm in three small bowls-yummy.) My spring roll appetizer was also good. I got standard pad thai for dinner. It was fine-nothing amazing. Boy was disappointed in the heat factor of his dinner. Apparently there were 2 peppers next to his choice on the menu, but his food really was not very spicy. So if you like your Thai food hot, you probably should specify this to them. There were a few bizarre things about this restaurant. 1. They have this awkward music (popular songs done in music box style) playing just a bit too loud. 2. The service was slow. It took way too long for them to even take our order, but the place was not even full. Thankfully, I was with good company. Well when I ordered on grub-hub, I ordered 6 different dishes - 2 of which I had specific requirements for - 1 being no egg and the other being mild instead of spicy. I really liked it here- it's byob, located on Haddon Avenue in Collingswood. We came in on a Sunday night and while the take out was bustling the restaurant was pretty quiet. Servers were quick and efficient. I started with Tom Yum soup with tofu which was sour and well spiced. My girlfriend and I split the chicken curry puffs as an appetizer they were good but the cucumber salsa served as a dipping sauce was not my favorite. We ordered chicken pad thai and the massaman curry with chicken as entrees. I did not really like the pad thai, I thought it was sort of bland and would prefer a more spicy dish. I really enjoyed the massaman curry and practically licked the bowl. Mid-meal we ran out of rice and we were quickly given more. This review is for takeout. I ordered from here last Friday. They said to give them 20 minutes. I went over and got there around 22 minutes after I placed the order. I had to wait another 10 minutes while they actually got my order together. At one point one waitress did ask whether I wanted some water, but I said no. I ordered lemongrass soup(small), 2 vegetable spring rolls, and thai green curry with chicken. The total was 22 bucks with tax. I was thinking, man this better be good for that. Alas, it was not. The soup was disappointing, though the vegetables in it were very nice. But it didn't have much flavor. The vegetable spring rolls were decent, and the dipping sauce was both spicy and sweet. The green curry chicken tasted good, but there was not a lot of chicken and vegetables and a lot of sauce(It looked very soupy and was soupy). Oh yeah and they skimped on the rice. Really? Authentic doesn't come to mind when I think of the 3 different dishes I've tried from Thai Basil (2 separate occasions, both takeout). It would've been one thing if the food wasn't authentic but actually tasted good, but (at least the dishes I tried: vegetable pad thai, roti and curry (the curry was served as a dip -- maybe 2 tbsp, at most!), and somtum (who makes somtum with cabbage and calls it authentic?)) fail on both counts. I really wanted to like Thai Basil bc I was very excited a Thai restaurant had opened so close to my house, but after two failed attempts, I'll probably continue trekking over to Philly when a craving for Thai food hits (unless there's some update to the menu). That said, the takeout service was speedy, and while I didn't dine in, I did see that the interior was very nicely appointed - new, clean, tasteful - and would have been a great place to dine. read more

Just got take out (Cashew Chicken + Thai Iced Tea = $15) on a Saturday night around 830pm. I was immediately greeted by a friendly hostess/waitress who made some excellent suggestions on the menu. The restaurant has modern decorum and the ambiance is very nice - I'll be returning for a sit down dinner for sure. Overall I thought the food was excellent but the portion size could be a bit bigger. The turn around time between ordering and leaving was less than 15 minutes - can't beat that! read more

After first tastings you can tell who ever's in the kitchen is probably Thai, as the flavor and essence is very authentic. In fact the entire food experience was very good. Not the best I've ever had, but very good for the south jersey scene. I've tried this restaurant several times over the past two years and have noticed that the cooking has gotten better from when they first opened, however it still seems the chef or owner is holding back and offering only the staples of mildly spiced Thai cooking. Give us some "POW"!!! My favorites (for now) are the Thai classics like Spicy Thai Basil and the Red or Green curry. The restaurant is nicely decorated and has good atmosphere, adding tablecloths would be a nice touch. The service lacks a little, not because the staff wasn't trying but because they are usually short staffed. Seems they don't expect many customers to walk in the door, which is the wrong approach , as Thai fans are always looking for new restaurants and are willing to travel! Finally, bring us some daily specials containing some spicy exotic dishes or appetizers. With some attention to detail, this could be a 4-star place. read more

The meal was alright. We ordered spring rolls, coconut soup, pad Thai, and drunken noodles. The food was all hot (temperature). Felt like there wasn't enough liquid to keep the noodles wet. Finally tried this place for the first time. The decor was nice, but reminded me of a friend's living room and it smelled like a gift shop. Ordered the lemongrass soup, which was really good, just not as delicious as other more flavorful versions I've tried at other places. For dinner I had the red curry shrimp with white rice, which was delicious. You really can't get any better than this, would definitely order again. For dessert had little rice pudding cups, which were tiny, but good. There was some green, sweet sauce drizzled on the plate, which was delicious. Would have liked to see that as a side, not wasted as a drizzle. We guessed kiwi, but still have no idea. I would probably try another dessert next time. Ok, so first off this place gets at least three stars for being the only Thai place in the area. The food was good and the prices were reasonable. I ordered take out for lunch and when I went in to pick it up the pace was empty but looked nice and clean. I ordered the Pad Him-Ma Pan Chicken which was decent. The chicken was a bit over cooked but there was a good portion. Also had the Trio Crap Dumplings which were excellent. I heart THAI food! After painting at All Fired Up we strolled around this area which is rich with yummy looking restaurants! We settled on Thai Basil and what a good choice it was! The place is small but quaint. Service was prompt and friendly :) I was excited to see that they had Rama (peanut sauce dish) on the menu! Many Thai restaurants do not offer this and it is one my favorites! The sauce was a little thinner than what I am used to but did not disappoint. Very flavorful and fulfilling! The portions are well proportioned and I left feeling full and satisfied without feeling glutinous. For me the only down side is that they do not serve alcohol It is, however, a BYOB. read more

If you have any experience with authentic Thai food you will automatically know that Thai basil is not where it's at. I had soup with a terrible aftertaste and dumplings that tasted like they were straight out of the freezer of the H Mart with some super salty sauce poured over it. My wife had some traditional noodles with vegetables and chicken in it that tasted like you could get it at any cheap Asian restaurant around the corner. I have eaten at at least 10 Thai restaurants in different states and Thai basil was by far the worst. To their credit -the place was cute & clean with nice Decour and the waitstaff was pleasant.
