The worst pho I've ever had in my life. The broth is just so plain. No l Garlic pepper oil. I requested for MSG so that it boost the flavor of my pho a little. But then they said they don't have MSG. The only thing I like is the curry. Curry comes with rice. Therefore, we have two person ordered 2 curry. One rice comes, and they say when you order two, you get one rice for both???? Like huh? Just a thought for the owner ... If your business hours say you're open until 3:00 pm, maybe you should be? Or ... maybe you could adjust them to say "kitchen closes early when they want to." PS ... Not much has changed since my last review of Thai Basil. It's still one of the best Thai restaurants in Chico. The interior walls could definitely use some remideling or at the very least the two wall areas that no longer have paint ought to be painted as well as their signs hanging on the wall look so messy. Let me get this out of the way-- the only reason this is four stars and not five is because of the wait time. I love Thai food. Peanuts, coconuts, little tiny cucumber and shredded carrot salads in rice vinegar-- all are flavors that make me happy. I love the whimsical presentation most Thai places have. Hubby and I wandered in for lunch. There were two or three other tables of 4 to 8 people. Bathroom was clean (Very important! If the bathroom isn't clean in a restaurant, why would one expect the kitchen to be clean?). Granted, the place isn't pretty. Atmosphere isn't their strong suit, but it was fine for lunch, and for the price point. Service was, well, not quick, but friendly enough. Food finally came, and oh, my, oh, my, I gobbled and gobbled. I ordered a peanut and coconut chicken dish with rice. The light, subtle flavoring tickled my taste buds. So much so, that three days later, I had to try my hand at coconut peanut chicken soup. Hubby was happy with whateveritwas that he ordered. I have no idea what it was. I was too busy with my chicken coconut peanut yumminess. So, if you love Thai flavors like I do, and have the time, Thai Basil might suit you just fine. read more

I have visited this Thai restaurant several times and have always had excellent food and service. The restaurant is rather small, but I haven't found it to bee overly loud-even when crowded, which could have been just because it was a quiet crowd. I have had several dishes here, such as stir fried eggplant, stir fried lamb, Thom Kha Gai soup, Thai fried rice and Pad Thai, to name a few. Everything was excellent. The lamb even surprised me because it was so good. Parking can be a challenge depending on what time of day. Bathroom and dining areas were clean. read more

Immediately when I walked in to pick up my order, I was disappointed. When I placed the order they said it would be an hour wait. Ended up waiting 20 minutes past that. I made the mistake of tipping them before the plate was in my hands because as as soon as I walked out, the sauce was leaking through the bag of my unripe papaya salad. Don't come here. Poor customer service, they picked up the phone really quickly, but then put me on hold for a long time. From the beginning till the end of my pickup, there was no smile, no 'thank you' at all. Really small portion, many reviews herein mentioned it, but there was one or two said different, giving me some hope, but now I'm pretty sure that it wasn't worth the price. Came here for the first time two days ago on Thursday and was immediately greeted by a woman with a smile on her face, which was just lovely. :) She asked me if I wanted to order my food for here or to go. I was running low on time, so I opted on ordering my food to go. I ordered the Pad Thai and the Mango Salad. She said it would take 15 minutes so I went and sat in at a table as I waited. While waiting I admired the beautiful decor and felt entranced by the soothing music flowing around the room. I definitely have to eat inside this restaurant next time so I have more time to take in everything. After about 10 minutes she alerted me that my food was ready. I took it, left and found a nice spot where I could eat it before class. The Pad Thai was delicious, it was steaming hot when I got it so I had to blow it off before I ate each bite, but the flavors were all there and I enjoyed it up until the last morsel of chicken was left in the corner of the take-out styrofoam tray. Then I ate the mango salad, which was just okay to me. The shrimp in it was good, but it just didn't click with my taste buds. I found it to be a little too sour, but the Pad Thai alone won me over and I will be back here in the future to try many more dishes and eat more Pad Thai. read more

I used to love going to this place until they refused to honor a gift certificate that was given to us for our wedding. It was just over a year when we tried to use it. I had misplaced it and was joyous once I had found it again. When we went to use it, they said they had a policy of NOT accepting gift certificates over a year old. This is against California law. They were given $50.00 in cash for our benefit and they just decided to keep it. Because of this, I won't be going back to this restaurant. Came in on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch. Service was okay, never got our water refilled. For $9.95+ per lunch special dish, the portion was way small and over seasoned/salted; and trust me, I love flavor but it was even too much for me. The plastic like platter they used to serve the dishes was unattractive and had gray stains on them. Now about the food: The complimentary hot and sour soup tasted like instant mama noodle soup with a few thin slices of lemon grass and teeny tiny blocks of tofu. Very salty, didn't care to finish it. The pad sew ew was so salty and sweet that I was barely even able to finish it even with such a small portion. I got medium spice, but it was way spicier than my husbands hot level spiced dish. My husband's eggplant chicken dish was not bad in flavor, slightly salty, but still very small portion and for being an "eggplant" dish, it only had 3 or 4 small slices of eggplant in it that was overly blanched in oil making the skin a little tough to chew and a hint burnt tasting. The egg roll and dipping sauce that came with the lunch dishes were good. The Thai tea was extremely sweet! And I usually like sweet. I had to take it in a to-go cup and let the ice melt in order to finish it. We only came here because Cocodine was closed, and for some reason Chada wasn't opened. My Thai food cravings were not satisifed with this trip and all in all, we probably won't be returning. Two stars for decent effort. read more

I've been here twice for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it both times; would like to try their dinner menu at some point. Haven't had their Thai tea yet but my fellow lunch goers didn't complain about theirs. I ordered the red curry and was pleasantly surprised at the light flavor compared to some Thai restaurants. I have my favorite dishes at each Thai restaurant in town and as of now I think their red curry has my heart. I thought it was just the right combo of sweet, spicy and creamy. Not watery or weak but not too strong, heavy or thick either. Service wasn't bad: the waitress was sort of bare minimum, not necessarily rude, but the bus boy(?) was very nice and made up for it. My one real complaint was the portions. It was slightly stingy for me, I'm a tiny person and my current pregnancy appetite is not at it's full capacity right now and I still didn't leave 100% full. I would even pay another buck to increase the portion, something to consider. Who knows, it could've been the particular dish that I ordered. Either way, I'll be back. read more

Pad Thai is good, PAd see ew is decent, curry is decent, their papaya salad isn't that great, fried rice dishes aren't bad. I have frequented Thai Basil restaurants in Sacramento and Roseville so was excited to find one on Chico. When I walked in during the lunch hour I was surprised to see the place almost empty. The hostess seated me without saying a word, I ordered my regular favorite lunch special and was surprised at the tiny portion compared to the other locations. The garlic eggplant lunch special included two thin slices of eggplant and six tiny pieces of chicken, what a disappointment based on experience dining at the Sacramento area locations. The food here is amazing, but that's not why I'm giving it 5 stars. I've had manymany Thai experiences, and I couldn't say this one tops my list. But it's a combination of multiple factors that I will recommend Thai Basil to all of my friends.... I love stopping here for grub when I'm downtown. It's cozy, and I love sitting by the window (if it's available) so I can catch a glimpse of the hustle and bustle. The servers are always pleasant, and because I stop in quite frequently they usually have my order memorized. The food is always very timely so I could come in famished and never have to worry about waiting forever for my meal. The prices are very reasonable for yummy, fresh, homemade dishes. I usually get the Pad See Ew, but sometimes I'll switch it up and get the Pumpkin Curry or the KangDang Curry (all with tofu). Nothing has ever failed to impress me. Plus, even though I'm vegetarian there are soooo many things to choose from. They will easily substitute items for me. The only downfall are the times they're open. I always seem to crave Thai Basil on Sundays when they're closed, but they are open on Mondays which is nice :) read more

A small little spot that could be easy to over look. Came in at at 1pm and you could tell they get hit hard for lunch. They quickly cleared a table and sat us down. The staff was polite and nice. I ordered the red curry with beef spicy. The food came out quicker than I expected which was nice. The spice doesn't disappoint. The only thing I'm taking a star away for is that it's a little watery for my taste and it was a little skimpy on the beef side. The vegetables were very fresh and it was very tasty. I took my elderly mother to this horrible place today - NEVER again! The "waitress" was so rude, inappropriate and unprofessional, that we literally got up and walked out. Never in my life have I felt compelled to leave a restaurant PRIOR to eating. What a piece of work. Makes me wonder what this server would do to the food...if given the chance. This was my first time to this restaurant. I ordered a large Tom Yum soup with chicken at a cost of $11.75 to go. When I got home I saw that there was a total of six pieces of mushroom not whole mushrooms but six small pieces. After spooning out the chicken into my bowl at home I realized it that there was hardly any chicken in it at all. I called the restaurant to talk about it and I was told that they only put six small pieces of mushroom in a large soup and then was told that I ordered soup which I did but what I didn't order was broth. I counted and I got a total of 11 spoonfuls of food that is it for $11.75. The gal that answered the phone was extremely rude and I will never ever go back to that restaurant again and I suggest you do the same. read more

Usually this place is great but it was terrible today. Service was slow and awkward as I brought clients there for lunch. We had to constantly as for water refills, the waiter, who looked and acted like a gang member, was just doing his own thing. At the end myself and one other person at the table started feeling nausea. I do plan on going back again, I think it was more of a bad staff day then the actual restaurant. We walked in around 7:45 on a Thursday and I asked for a table for 13. The woman working barely looked around the room and said that she could not seat us together. She made no effort to accommodate us even though they only had about 4 tables occupied. Had she made an effort or even pretended to want to serve us, we would have stayed. The dishes were good, the family-style portions were appropriate size, and the service was timely, but EVERYTHING was in styrofoam and plastic.
