I was really looking forward to the curry and the mango sticky rice. The curry tasted more like soup and didn't have much flavor. And the sticky rice that was supposed to go with the mango was hard almost as a hockey puck. I was so sad. I wish i could attach the video of me banging the rice but i can only upload pictures :/. I've been to Thai 55 quite a few times, so I figured it was time to write a review. I've had a variety of their appetizers and noodle dishes, especially the pad wun-sen and pad see-ew. The food usually is decent. The portions are a reasonable size, enough for one person to take some leftovers home. I have dropped by on multiple occasions to take some bubble tea to go. They didn't have a clear cash-only policy labeled anywhere so during my first few times, I ended up ordering and then having no cash to pay with, so they would take my card with visible frustration. They don't have the most polite staff or service unless you come with a group for a sit-down meal. One time we came in with about 15 minutes before closing time to get some bubble tea, and they already said they were closed. Needless to say, I've experienced much better service from the other restaurants on that street, and I avoid coming to Thai 55 when I can. read more

Note: I had this when Thai 55 came to my office building to serve food via Fooda. Not good at all. I had yellow curry and the flavor just wasn't tasty. Potatoes were not fully cooked. And near the end of the dish I bit into a weird-textured piece of chicken that made me gag outloud (with all my coworkers listening, who had a good laugh.) No more Thai 55 for me. read more

A favorite from years ago when I lived in Hyde Park. My husband and I recently returned for a meal, after visiting the Museum of Science and Industry. Just a short walk and worth the trip! We order Pad Thai and Bangkok Vegetables since we're vegetarian. The vegetables can now be ordered mild or spicy. Ample portions for reasonable prices; friendly and prompt customer service; delicious food. We've eaten at three other Thai places in the west suburbs ... and nothing is as delicious as this one! Yesterday I tried Thai 55 for lunch via the Fooda set-up in my office building downtown. Never heard of the restaurant until then however decided to give them a try! Besides, who doesn't like Thai food, right?! WELL, I'm no longer a fan of the food (well perhaps until my stomach gets better) I order the bangkok chicken with fried rice and it was horrible! I had one bite of the "chicken" and one spoon of the rice and I was done. The bread around the chicken was soggy and the "chicken" inside was gooey! The fried rice was undercooked and just didn't taste good. I took the dish home so my daughters could try it (perhaps my taste buds were off for the day) however they didn't like it either... We all have been in and out of the bathroom since. It has been 24hrs later and I still feel like crap. Never going again! Once I monster up the energy, we'll be at the ER. Also the two young ladies could have been a little friendly. I mean it wouldn't hurt to greet your customers. read more

The white rice was under-cooked. I had to add water to the containers and put them in the microwave (Chef Mike) and steam the rice the rest of the way. The Pangang Curry was, meh at best. It was sweet and had decent flavor but the setup of zucchini and cabbage to the mix was a bit to crowded and there wasn't enough chicken in the dish. read more

This was one of my favorite restaurant for years. A few months ago I was over charged on an online order. I received a 10 dollar coupon from Thai 55 for my online response describing my displeasure with being over charged. Today I called in an order and explained that I had a 10 dollar coupon. When picking up my order they would not except their coupon that they emailed to me. Lots of ridiculous excuses why they couldn't except their own coupon. I paid for my order! I ordered on grubhub. When I received my items they were hot and packaged well. I ordered crab Rangoon and it lacked filling. It was barely in filling In there. I was disappointed. I've ordered take-out from here several times because it is close to my workplace. So, I can't comment on the service in the storefront, but I can safely say that deliveries are timely. We often do group orders (~20 entrees) and have not had any issues with orders. What I love about Thai 55 is that the portions are huge. I usually order my go-to (pad Thai), eat to my heart's content, and then I have enough to eat to fill me up for two more full meals. Crazy. Is it absolutely incredible and flavorful? No. On fact, as far as pad Thai goes, I found it to be fairly bland. I'm not a big fan of spice, but I felt that this dish could have used a little kick. I appreciate that Thai 55 doesn't overcook the tofu, a complaint I've had of other Thai restaurants. Speaking of that tofu, they do not skimp. The tofu to noodle ratio is pretty darn good. However, I would be more of a fan of those place of there were more of the other toppings. Despite some complaints, Thai 55 is my favorite Thai food in Hyde Park. So if I'm craving Thai, I'll know where to go. I certainly won't go hungry! read more

Been here 3 times now I keep forgetting how not very good it is but this time I'm reviewing so I'll read my own review and keep walking! Disappointed with the meal. Had tempura appetizer which was tasteless and then Pad Thai which was greasy, over sticky noodles, served luke warm and was altogether bland. There are several other places one in river north just off state street and another by Ashland and Fullerton whos pad Thai is really exceptional so I'm not going back to this place again. read more

I had Thai 55 today via the Fooda stand in my office building downtown. I got the chicken pad thai and an assortment of apps for $9! The portion size of the pad thai was insanely generous and it was flavorful. The only slight complaint I have is that it felt like it was all noodles, I kept stirring it hoping to find some chicken but the chicken was scarce. Perhaps this is because it was Fooda so hopefully I'll make it to the restaurant sometime soon. Either way it was great! read more

I ordered Chicken Pad Thai, which was mediocre at first sight to say the least. Badly garnished with an old lime slice , cabbage and carrots. They give you a large portion which, I guess is supposed to make up for the lack of flavor. As if that wasn't bas enough, they put SOUR CHICKEN in my food. They better pray I don't end up with food poisoning! Will never order from here again!!! I had to give one star to post but would like to be able to rate them a negative number!!! read more

The Pad Thai is super delicious! There are so many vegetarian options, and the tofu is cooked pretty decently. It is BYOB! The bubble tea and thai teas are also delicious! As are the crab rangoons (which are vegetarian)!! Everything is reasonably priced with huge portions....though the service can at times be slightly rude (depending on your server), they are always prompt. read more

This is one of our low key date spots, but also in our regular take out rotation. While the menu doesn't offer some items that I'd normally order at other Thai restaurants, I've become a fan of their drunken noodles with chcken. I'd recommend getting it dine-in, as the take out isn't really mixed together well. It's just noodles on the bottom and everything else on the top. BUT! If you do eat in, and you find the dish too spicy, take your leftovers home and eat them the next day. The spiciness will have mellowed a bit, and they'll be much better One weird thing? I gave this place one star here are the reasons why: 1. the salmon red curry was tasty but over cooked. 2. The service from the Asian waitress was so awful I wanted to scream at her and say learn some manners of professionalism. 3. Their pad Thai was overly dressed with the sauce they used. After seeing that Thai 55 was 4 stars from Google, I decided to give it a try. Well, I should've checked yelp as well. After recommendations of pad thai and their pad thai, I decided to give the tofu pad thai and bubble milk tea a try. Thai is absolutely my favorite food, however their thai was not authentic. It seemed like very Americanized thai. First off, they say that their pad thai is made with "Pad Thai sauce" and usually it's tamarind sauce. Their pad thai is drenched in what tastes like syrup. It's really sweet and the smell is so strong I want to gag. Traditional pad thai is supposed to be a neutral contrast between sweet and sour, their pad thai was overly sweet and didn't even have the sourness of the tamarind sauce. The only thing okay was the tofu in it. Their bubble milk tea is nothing too memorable, just that the bubbles were not as fresh as it could've been. Service of the place was definitely below my standards after reading what others claimed. My friends and I walked in and only after a minute did they seat us. Not really a big deal, but fine. We were seated at a booth and the male waiter kind of threw the menus on the table. After ordering, no one came to check on us until we asked for the check. The waitress was seated at the table next to us eating her lunch; not seeing the waiter in sight, I asked the waitress if we could have the check. She turned my way and totally ignored me. Twice. Suddenly the waiter pops out of nowhere and hands us the check. As soon as we put the money down, the bill was snatched away from us. I definitely would not come back, I'll definitely stick to my usual Thai places. read more

Very, very bad service, awful and mean. I gave one star because I cannot post a zero. With such "service", I don't care what kind of food I get. I will never step into this restaurant ever again into life. The waitress had been extremely impatient since we walked in. We had had four people but one of us decided to leave. So she kept asking us impatiently and repetitively, " three or four?! Are u sure?!" Are we that idiotic that we don't know how many people we have?? Then I asked her to place my order. She looked at me, said nothing, and went on with her lunch. A few minutes later, I asked her again, and her majesty responded:"JUST WAIT TWO MINUTES." No excuse me, no please. I don't know how I pissed her off and why she gave me the face. If such conduct can be called "service", it should be "minus service" because it brought me nothing but anger and nausea. read more

After visiting the Museum of Science and Industry, and walking back to the train station, we decided we needed something yummy to drink. We stopped in here to grab some bubble teas. I had the passion fruit and my daughter had the kiwi. Both were delicious. We didn't have any food but it looked good. Maybe next time we'll try the food along with some more bubble teas. read more

This place is nice and good to come with your date :-) I like Bangkok Shrimp even though this menu doesn't exist in Thailand. (FYI Rama chicken is also "Thai food made in the U.S. cooked for Americans" don't bother to find it in Bangkok or anywhere else in Thailand :-) But we do have American fried rice in Thailand instead (of course some Thai people think it is a real american dish LOL) Ok about this place Smoothies are good. There are three Thai restaurants on 55th St within a block from each other. Why? I have no idea. I've eaten here a few times throughout my time at the UofC, and I would say that you're probably better off at either Siam or The Snail. Thai 55 is okay, but just... okay. Their pad thai is all right. Their curry is all right. Their bubble tea, however, is atrocious. The tapioca is consistently limp to the bite and almost unnervingly soft. Sometimes you end up asking about half of their drink menu before hitting a type that they actually have available. I once got a watermelon bubble tea; at any other place in Chicago this is a refreshing, fruity concoction made with fresh watermelon chunks. Thai 55 gave me a milky-pink, frothy drink that tasted something like strawberry milk. I guess if you're walking from campus and you're REALLY cold and the extra block it takes to get to any of the other restaurants is just too unbearably far that Thai 55 will suffice. And if you're fiendishly craving any sort of creamy tapioca-infused beverage, then maybe Thai 55 will get you your fix. Otherwise, though, you can do better. Even if it's 2 degrees outside, you're stuck in your dorm, you've given up on life... remember that the other two Thai establishments are no more expensive, and that even if the University has already vanquished your soul, your stomach deserves better. read more

I'm being generous here: a lot of food for the main dish, clean and bright environment, prompt service, decent prices. As for the appetizers, we ordered the crab rangoon (very tasty, light shell) and the spring rolls. The spring rolls were so small you needed a magnifying glass to see them. My seafood entree was good and the seafood was really fresh. The other two members of our party got a generous amount of food, but my husband ordered a chicken dish. He expected the chicken to be cut up in chunks with his noodles, but it appeared to have been ground, then fried. He wasn't crazy about the texture, and there seemed to be very little chicken. Also, not too many veggies. It's also annoying when the server is ON THE PHONE while serving you. Maybe it was someone placing a carry-out order and no one in the back picked up, but some on. Very unprofessional. This is on the same block with two other Asian restaurants (and I'm not counting the Middle Eastern restaurant, which I guess is technically Asian)--there's a Korean place and a Japanese establishment. If you're in the mood for Asian food, this is your destination, but you might want to try one of the other places first. read more

Perfect example of how NOT to serve customers. i've eaten here a few times before, food is inconsistent going from mediocre, overcooked and bland to decently made, with the only redeeming quality being price. but after this last experience with their servers flat out telling me that i probably wouldn't like the food they serve when i asked a simple question about a dish, i've decided i'll never again eat here. i'm not all that picky about food, as evident from my repeated patronage here despite the mixed results, but one thing i don't pay for is rude service. never again. if u want good thai food, go a block over to Siam Thai for always great tasting food at a decent price. Just came from ordering Ginger Beef ($8.75) and large white rice ($3.00) and was charged ~$14.70. Seemed a tad high so I asked what the tax rate was, he said, "I think 12%." Ok, even at that rate it shouldn't cost $14.xx. Then he tells me the entree is $9.75. So even at that new price, which isn't advertised anywhere, the total still doesn't compute. When told he should change all the menus to reflect the "new" price or else people will think you're ripping them off he replied, "Oh we should update." Don't see it happening anytime soon as it looks like regular practice with laminated menus on tables showing $8.75. Oh, and the Ginger Beef wasn't all that. Had better for less. Our third year of Super club took us to a small Thai restaurant found in The heart of Hyde Park. Thai 55, was pretty good. It's a nice quant authentic experience. As you know, our Supper Club focuses on finding BYOB restaurants, that we haven't gone to before. After the third year of doing this, you can imagine that it gets hard to find something new. However, I can't believe this place has never been on our radar. We started off with the deluxe appetizer plate. They cut it in half for us to share everything. Nothing was too amazing here, just ok. Then we ordered a smorgasbord of food. A few of the items were the green curry Roasted duck, Bangkok chicken, lobster sauce seafood, shrunken noodles and a rice dish. Please note there were like 8 of us. LOL. We shared everything and were pretty amazed with the duck curry, drunken noodles and lobster sauce seafood. All were items, the waitress suggested. All and all, this place is worth at least one try! You can dine in or carry out. I could imagine it becoming your neighborhood go to place for Thai. read more

I thought I'd check out another restaurant near my work for lunch. Unfortunately the spicy drunken noodles at Thai 55 weren't very good compared to what I've had elsewhere. The sauce seemed like an afterthought. There was plenty of sauce - too much actually - but it wasn't cooked into the tofu chunks and noodles, which seemed watery and bland inside. The green and red peppers were fresh though. My juice-based green tea smoothie seemed suspiciously opaque and creamy. I inquired about the presence of dairy, and the server said she had no idea if the green tea powder included milk and that the container wouldn't have that information. I would think they'd keep the package label or something for an ingredient list, but I guess not. So I didn't drink any of it. I was disappointed by the experience here. There are several other restaurants on the block so I doubt I'd return. read more

I stopped in here after visiting the Museum of Science and Industry. There were several Thai restaurants on this street, but I'm glad we walked into this one. I'm not a Thai food expert. In fact, I haven't tried very much at all. So this review is not comparing this food to any other Thai food. I tried the Bangkok Chicken, which I thought was delicious. The chicken was breaded and fried perfectly. The dish was slightly spicy--pretty hot, but not so hot that I couldn't eat it. Our table shared an order of Crab Rangoon--also very good. read more

We got the drunken noodle and yellow curry shrimp. Since it was takeout I can't comment on the service really. They seem friendly enough. However the food was probably some of the worst Thai I've had. I'm relatively new to Thai, but I've had enough different places to compare. These two dishes were by far the least flavorful and overcooked I've had. The noodles were mushy and the shrimp was barely seasoned, but at least it was somewhat edible unlike the yellow curry. We each had a couple bites, and couldn't even finish it. There was no saving it. Absolutely no flavor at all, and everything was way overcooked. Good news is, if you're looking for a similar place in Hyde Park with a similar price point, I tried Snail Thai Cuisine a couple months back, and was very pleased. This is by all means a b level thai restaurant. I am a creature of habit and panang curry is my go to whenever I'm at a Thai restaurant. I ordered my usual, panang curry with tofu, and it was hot and fresh but the curry was watered down and there was a surplus of oddball veggies included in the mix. It is a personal annoyance of mine when a Thai restaurant adds veggies when you order with tofu without letting you know as I prefer the typical bell peppers and bay leaves to a random assortment. The last thing is that they charged extra for rice. I'm sorry but what person eats curry without rice? The price was very reasonable so just increase the base price and give it complementary. It's not a pleasant surprise on your bill when you see it was an additions here. read more

Definitely my favorite Thai in Hyde Park. Of course, there are the two other Thai places within the same block, but this one rocks the others' socks off. I nearly always get the Thai Iced Tea, which is a not *amazing*, but it definitely makes the experience better. Favorite dishes are the green & yellow curries, panang curry, drunken noodles (just spicy enough not to burn a hole through your tongue), and pad thai. I especially like to pair the pad thai with one of the spicier dishes because it is really sweet here. Unfortunately, you can't get the pad thai if you plan on reheating it tomorrow...it's not gonna work out all that well for you. Anyway, great place. Typical Hyde Park atmosphere. Casual dress. Wow, are these other yelpers on crack? Sometimes a man has got to eat - in this case had to eat closer to school in Hyde Park. I'd been to The Snail for Thai down the street and that was acceptable, but it was closed this evening, so between Thai 55 and Siam, in we went. My friend said his Tom Yum soup tasted like sweet and sour w/some tofu. My dish, red curry with chicken was very, very ordinary. Service (unless they were waiting for my buddies to finish their appetizers) was slow considering we were the only ones there not already eating. The staff was friendly enough and it was fairly cheap. But this place ain't 4-star worthy folks, unless you've only lived on 55th St your entire life. read more

Wow, this was hands down some of the best Thai Food I've had in Chicago. I'm simultaneously upset at myself and anyone I know who has lived in Hyde Park for not telling/realizing this place existed. So the not so great first, we got here at 1PM and there was one waiter for the entire restaurant. My wife's thai coffee came in at the end of the meal and it was strong enough to be diesel. Maybe it's always that strong but the late delivery disappointed us. On to the good, the pad thai and the drunken noodles were amazing. I'm not sure why we ordered pad thai as we usually think it's a boring choice but we did and it was the best pad thai I've ever had. The drunken noodles were outstanding as well but a bit greasy. I also ordered a passionfruit bubble green tea and it was amazing. I saw several people just order bubble teas and walk out and I can see why. If I was anywhere near this place I would do the same. Spring rolls are rolls you should skip. Though not in my neighborhood we'll be back and I urge anyone taking a trip to Hyde Park to consider a visit. read more

I would realistically give this place a 3.8 star rating. It's not the greatest place in the world for Thai food (being from LA and there just more and better variety there) but being in Hyde Park, you kind of have to settle with the options available to you. I prefer Thai 55 to the other Thai restaurants mainly because the service is great and the food is decent. My friends and I are regulars there so the waitress is pretty nice to us. I always get the spiciest curry there, the Green Curry, with chicken along with an order of rice. It's nice and creamy with a generous amount of vegetables, just the way I like it. The only thing I hate about the place is that you have to order rice separate from your curry instead of having it included in the order (are we SUPPOSE to eat curry by itself?!?!) Their pad thai is alright, nothing special. Their milk tea drinks are mediocre and being a boba snob from the west coast, I was very disappointed with how terrible their boba (or "pearls) were. They were over-boiled and mushy and the texture just wasn't right. However, their thai iced tea is pretty good. Just make sure to tell them to not add too much ice or else half your order is more ice than iced tea. read more

Usually my boyfriend and I go here for mango smoothies, they're the best! Last night we got food for the first time, to go. I got pad thai because I'm a vegetarian and gluten free. It was the best pad thai I've ever had, just the right amount of tamarind. My boyfriend got something spicy and with duck. He really liked and it and wants to go back. I'm saving the last star for when we eat there and experience their waitstaff. Things were a little crazy last night with some of the pick up orders but not sure why. read more

So I've been recovering from a stomach infection and this place is a gem. The food is fresh made and cooked to order. The chicken cashew chicken, Bangkok shrimp, and potstickers have saved my life this week. I look forward to being a frequent visitor even though I no longer live in Hyde Park. read more
