Everything for my first experience was just OK. Cannot say anything negative or overtly positive. The food was OK but not the best Thai I've had. My favorite is another Thai place near by. To be fair to this place i will not name it:) The prices seemed a little high for that area considering there are 2 other Thai places near by. Pineapple fried rice (my favorite Thai food) is around $18 whereas I can get it at another place for around $10. The service was good and the food was decent. I think the lunch special applies on the weekend as well so you may want to go during those hours as the prices seem $3 to $4 less per entree. read more

Just came from college tour and a long drive and we were starving. We stopped at this place to get food and ordered coconut soup, and we were told about the specials, a salmon dish and pad thai. The coconut soup came and the chicken was extremely dry and the mushrooms were barely cooked. Then our meals came out. The pad thai had a very strange taste and the fish was horrible. We ate rice and vegetables, but couldn't even eat the pad thai noodles. We ordered the specials and couldn't finish our meal after coming in ravenous. I have gone to Thai 55 multiple times for lunch since it's right down the road from my office. I'm never disappointed with the food. Sometimes the service is hit or miss but it's a small place there gets packed so it seems they do the best they can. I always get a lunch special which runs around $8.95 and includes a salad or soup and an entree. The entree is a nice sized portion and I usually leave there filled up. I really enjoy the Chicken Red Curry or Shrimp Pad Thai. They are both extremely flavorful. If you want a fairly inexpensive lunch that's usually fairly quick, check out Thai 55. read more

This place is conveniently located right on 55, just past the intersection of 54 and 55. I decided to try some takeout here and the food has been pretty average. It's not bad and it's not amazing. My first impression from Thai 55 is that they're possibly putting out good food, but you really have to pick and choose to find the best options. Our table ordered the volcano pot of coconut chicken soup which I thought was very sub-par. Not bad, but just okay. We also ordered the green papaya salad, which was my favorite part of the meal. It was a great balance of spicy and sour and I loved that it was served with sticky rice and chicken satay. I'd return for that meal again and again. Finally, we ordered the pad thai, because who can go wrong with that? But, while the meal was good, it wasn't something I'd recommend or order again, a little off on the sweet-spicy-sour balance and a little too sweet for my tastes. It also could've used a side of limes. I thought the menu was very diverse and I'd love to return to try more of their dishes and service was very attentive even with a busy restaurant. Came here for the first time tonight and the place was packed. That's a good sign. But it should've been an indication of the slow service that was about to come... or should I say, not come. The food was good, although nothing I will be craving. I would avoid the crab angels, as they were too crunchy. Their portions are pretty decent for the price. I was excited to try this place based on the five star reviews, but it's clear that the reviews were written by friends and family. We ordered chicken satay, green curry, and fried rice with shrimp. The satay was decent but the cucumber in the sauce was old and the sauce tasted off. The green curry was just wrong. It had zero flavor. I ate half of it trying to figure out what was missing and finally just added some salt but it didn't help. I ordered the 2 pepper spice level because my in experience at other Thai restaurants that's pretty spicy. This was bland and not spicy at all. The chicken was super dry and chewy. The shrimp fried rice was also off. It was mushy, the tomatoes were old, there was a scant amount of egg, and the seasoning was just wrong. On top of everything else, the drink menu was pitiful. They have not yet secured their liquor license, so there wasn't even beer or wine available. On the plus side, the waitstaff was friendly and attentive. They could tell that we were unsatisfied and asked us what was wrong. However, they made no attempt to offer another dish or otherwise make our experience better. Quiet, unassuming strip mall joint, at a location which has seen in the past a few attempts to establish various kinds of cuisines. This one however is a winner in my opinion. Ingredients are good and fresh. Not exactly inexpensive, but worth it. Cooking style is proper Thai, and not watered-down by Chinese-American influences. Go eat. A little weird writing this review - so we love the food at this place and have always had excellent service with the waitress there. This last time, we went and there was a new waiter there. We have never been treated so rudely by anyone before! He sat us down, then asked us to get up and move to the bar. When we politely asked him why, he raised his voice, told us we could leave if we want and that he would not seat us at a table (restaurant only had two tables occupied at this time). We've never been spoken to that way by anyone and were a little shocked as he continued to raise his voice, ignore us and told us "you never have to come back here if you didn't like the service". The food is good here but I'm not willing to put up with that kind of rudeness for it. We will not be going back with that waiter around ever again. read more

My husband and I had a sushi craving tonight and just wanted to pick up sushi from somewhere close by! We were excited to hear that this restaurant just opened up near our house and we were pleasantly satisfied with the level of service and yummy sushi that we got! I love this place! I was craving Thai for awhile upon moving to the Raleigh area and came here with my husband. We got the spring rolls, which were great. I ordered a Pad Thai (Medium) while my husband ordered a Pad Thai (Spicy). The male server ended up switching our meals, which wasn't the best thing to happen. I ended up with the Spicy Pad Thai, which proved to be amazing with a lot of kick to it. Unfortunately, it was too spicy to stay in my stomach for the next two days, which is why I give this restaurant 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise, the meals were delicious. Incredible food - a little pricey, but completely worth it! I got the fried rice w/ beef and will easily make 2 meals out of it. Fantastic service, as well. We came in a while after peak hour and we were the only people there, and all the staff were truly exceptional. Would highly recommend to anybody looking for a more upscale-than-average Durham meal! Basil shrimp was perfectly seasoned, hot, and flavorful, but a very small portion (5 shrimp for the price of $11+). And I'm not in the habit of counting shrimp, mind you! This is not the worst Chinese place I have ever been to, but it could be the worst Thai. I decided to go with the Lunch menu. They rate degrees of spice with one to four (Thai Hot) asterisks. There are no four asterisk dishes on the menu. I generally evaluate Thai places by Tom Yum Goong soup and a curry dish. They do not have Tom Yum. I was told hot and sour is the same thing. It is not! The Spicy Coconut Soup is offered with the lunch menu. I'll try it. It was totally void of flavor. The coconut broth seemed watery and tasted old. There was no spice. I did find a couple of small tofu dices. The was a red sheen floating on top that must have been chili oil. I opted for one of the three asterisk dishes, "Pad Prik Prok." I think they mean Pork. Every recipe I find for this dish is stir fried pork and green beans with chili paste or curry paste. Their description is "Lean pork, bell peppers, garlic and pepper sauce." Not mentioned was the sliced white onion and a very heavy hand with sodium (likely msg). The sauce/broth was watery. The whole thing looked like a poorly executed American Chinese dish. The was no evidence of stir fry, rather a stewed tough thin sliced pork. I have to say there was a touch of spice. Not three asterisks hot. To me, the best Asian food is well spiced with multiple layers of flavor. Salt, sweet, sour, bitter and spicy are the flavors of Thai food. The over riding sense is fresh, bright flavors. The lunch menu descriptions list lime juice and cilantro exactly once each. I previously reviewed the menu without trying the food. I have now tried the food. It didn't improve my opinion. I really had high hopes for a solid Thai restaurant. This place isn't solid, it isn't Thai and it isn't worth a second trip. Edit to add-There were ants on my table. Rip off!! After having frequented Thai 55 at least twice a month for the past year , today is the last time I will go there. I visited Thai 55 with a colleague for lunch today.The food was good, as usual. When the time came to pay the check, I noticed an 18% gratuity added to my check. Thinking it was a mistake , I enquired about it to our server and he said that they were automatically applying it to all checks. Now mind you, this was for a group of two, not a large group. I told him I did not want to pay the 18% gratuity and I would leave a tip instead. He told me that because they weren't tipped enough last year , they are applying the 18% gratuity to require patrons to pay a tip. ( totally defeats the concept of a tip which is intended to recognize and appreciate good service) . To top it all, they have recommended tip amounts at the bottom of the check; these recommendations are based off your total including the 18% gratuity! So with their recommendation for a 15% tip, you are effective paying over 35% in tips; 18% of which you may not have realized that your are paying. While I was having this conversation with the server, a group of men at the table next to me started looking at their checks and noticed the gratuity too. These men had added in an extra tip because they hadn't noticed the 18% gratuity added in. Thai 55 is scamming its customers! I finally said to our server - we will not be returning here. He said - Don't. I kid you not. Me and my colleagues, typically a group of 4-6 , visit Thai 55 at least twice a month. I can guarantee that they have lost our business. I will not recommend Thai 55 to anyone based on my experience here today. read more

While I would have liked to give Thai 55 four stars, the wait time at lunch was just unacceptable, way too long for lunch. A group that came after us got all their meals before us. The server did apologize several times and came over with the check early thinking we were in a rush getting back to the office, so I appreciate that (although would have appreciated a discount on the check more). I would consider giving it another chance as the food is pretty good, we had the Pad Thai with tofu and the eggplant dish with noodles and salmon in red curry sauce. The sauce was very good and it's a big portion. I almost didn't finish it, but then I did. It's actually a very good deal at lunch for just 7.95. This includes your choice of coconut soup or salad with ginger dressing on top. The coconut soup has some tofu and mushrooms in it, a decent portion for complimentary soup, although somewhat watered down. Basically Tom Kha Kai, but with minimal ingredients. The interior is kind of low key and simple, so think this is a good spot for lunch rather than dinner date nights. read more

I've ordered delivery from this restaurant before but since I had ordered an hour before they closed I figured I'd just go and pick up from them myself to save the delivery driver from driving all the way to my house. When I got there, there was a sign to call. So I called to let them know that I was there and that I knew I was early, what was the protocol for picking up. The person who answered told me to wait 10 minutes and then come inside to pick up. After about 12 minutes I called again since I didn't see anyone approach the table in front of the window that I can see. He rudely yelled on the phone "we are working on your order and I don't know when it'll be ready" and proceeds to hang up on me. I didn't want to walk inside unless it was necessary but I was upset at the way he talked to me and hung up on me. I went in to just get a refund since it seemed like the kitchen was slammed. He comes with my order before I could say anything, plops it down in front of me and said, "Here, have a good night" and walks off. I was livid by then so I asked for a refund. He turns around all smiles now and shushes me and says that the kitchen was fighting and that he's so sorry but what can he do when the kitchen is upset. How dare he shush me! I told him there was no reason to be so rude to a paying customer when all I was doing was checking in to see if I was looking at the wrong table for my order. He just proceeds to wink and smile and say good night. NEVER EVER ordering from this place again. read more

I really wanted this place to be good as its close to me and Thai food is top of my list of comfort food. Since I moved to this side of the town I haven't been able to find anything as great. I walked in to order some take out at 7 pm and the place was packed which is always a good sign. Between me and my husband we ordered Green Papaya salad as recommended in Rose L.'s review, Thai sausage, Pineapple Fried Rice and Spicy Cashewnut chicken. As expected Green Papaya salad was great and Pineapple Fried rice did not disappoint but the I wasn't thrilled with Thai Sausage maybe since I didn't know what to expect. I have definitely had better Cashew Chicken before and their version clearly did not thrill me. Although it could one of those days and one of those dishes they don't do extremely well so I would definitely go back and try some more mainstream dishes. This was my first time trying Thai 55. I placed a takeout order for the Thai BBQ chicken and egg rolls. The locations looked okay. It's the old KFC store. I wanted for a long time before I could place my order and waitress wasn't very friendly. I saw she was waiting tables and handling takeout. I waited outside for about 15 minutes and my order still wasn't ready. The chicken was a 1/2 with fried rice. The chicken was okay, better the next day. The fried rice wasn't good at all. It was very sweet. It tasted like they just scooped some of sweet n sour sauce and just stirred it in. The egg rolls were like Japanese spring rolls. The sauce was good but they were way overpriced. I don't think I'll be back. I don't feel that the food was a good value for what was received. It was average. read more
