-Really wish I had read the other yelp reviews before booking our tour :(
-Austin-Fredericksburg Jul 17
-First stop was Cru at 11:00am for brunch/mimosa and check in. This part started great! The food was good, mimosa was strong, ended up seated with a great table of folks who bought rounds for the table. Good times! At no point was I asked to check in, show ID, show my groupon voucher...guess we looked like we belonged on the trip.
-After over an hour here, there was an announcement made by Brian the host that the bus is running late, should be here "soon".
-By 1pm, still no bus. Then we were told they are sending 2 buses as to accomodate the entire group, and that one bus will be here "soon" and the other "20 minutes after that". We wanted to just get going, but Brian (who seemed a bit tipsy already) assured our table that "the second bus is the one I'm going on, it will be great! We'll make up our time on the road!". So. ok! Another round of mimosas for the table. Feeling no pain!
-1:30? Ish? A nice looking bus arrives, most of the group get on. They are headed to stop number 1 - a cute market to pick up snacks and such while on the way to winery # 1.
-1:45-2:00 ish? Bus number 2 arrives...the short bus. The rest of us, and host Brian get on. NO AIR CONDITIONING. There is some air coming thru the vents, but within a few moments EVERYONE on this bus was uncomfortable. Its almost 100 degrees out and everyone is trying to be positive. Meanwhile, Brian hands out wrist bands (still no one has asked who we are, or checked us in, or anything). He is super touchy feely, seems to feel need to touch everyone all the time (arms, shoulders, backs...). I'm no prude but dang. Handsy! By now he's made it very clear he is here to party, he's had a drink in his hand non-stop, and is VERY much focused on a group of young ladies on the tour.
-We skip the first stop, and head straight to winery # 1. Finally headed to "Fredericksburg!". Just kidding. We roll into a winery in Johnson City, and are SO excited to finally have restrooms and an air conditioned winery. Turns out the first bus of our group has been there for some time, after having made a stop at the market, and our section of the group is not allowed inside with the air conditioning until the first group "finishes up". Not even to browse the shop. So we wait outside in the heat :(
-At this point I've stopped keeping track of time - trying to "go with the flow" and embrace the journey. Completely disorganized....no one knew how long to expect to be at each winery, general milling about, waiting to see if Brian would wander towards the buses. Usually I'd expect a host to be a "tour guide" - let us know where we are going, when, what to expect, at least some information on wineries. Nothing. Beginning to think we have a drunk ex-frat boy on our hands.
-Head to the second winery....now I'm thinking yes we MUST be heading into Fredericksburg! Well, sort of. We hit a winery just over the city line...again, disorganized, everyone on bus #2 is melted at this point, and becoming jealous of life on bus #1. Starting to forget what civilized travel feels like. Fantasies are forming about the fabulous air conditioned existence that awaits on bus #1. Discussions of mutiny and storming the other bus are had. At this point Bro-Brian seems HAMMERED. Leaning on people on the bus, slurring, trying to make bad jokes, and hey if you can't find him ,just look for the nearest short skirt and behold! There he is trying to work his magic!
-Checked back in on the time because we started feeling like we were trapped...its now 5:00pm. The tour is supposed to conclude in Austin at 6:00pm. Hmmm.
-Head to 3rd winery, about 2 miles down the road. Still technically Fredericksburg! Yet - not actually "Fredericksburg" :( Super bummed that a tour to Fredericksburg did not actually end up there. This winery actually had the best wine of the 3. However, they did not seem prepared to handle a group of our size (about 50). There was an olive oil tasting that was actually a tupperware of cut up bread (about 50 pieces exactly ha) and some paper plates. Like locusts, the privileged air-conditioned upper class of bus # 1 descended upon the vittels and left none for poor, dehydrated, delirious traumatized bus # 2 passengers (at least at this point, this is all my poor abused brain can conclude).
-After finishing up here we are heading back to Austin. The ride back is a disaster. The bus driver seems to be trying to make up for lost time and drove like a maniac. Drunk Bro Brian is now SUPER lit, stumbling around our bus, drinking out of peoples glasses, chugging beers, putting his hands on everyone. At this point all I could do was ask the Almighty what transgressions I had committed to land me on this bus experience from hell, and to beg forgiveness and promise to be good forever and ever if I could only one day actually get to Fredericksburg. With AC. And a less rapey host. read more
