My appointment was scheduled for last Friday (scheduled WITH Russell via phone). I waited at least an hour after our appointment time before I called and got his voicemail. Left a message, tried giving the benefit of the doubt. Got a call back from him later in the day saying he was sorry, but with the bad weather his cattle and/or his neighbor's cattle got out and he was getting them back to where they needed to be. I get that things happen, but he could've at least taken a moment to call me or text me to give me a heads up he'd either be late or need to reschedule. He's called a couple of times since then, at which point we advised him we were not moving forward. He called again today and I politely texted him back that we would be going with another company. He took it very personally and got extremely defensive, and provided a different excuse that it was a holiday weekend and he had family in town and if I couldn't understand that then too bad, basically. He knew it was a holiday weekend when he booked the appointment. If it was a bad time, then don't book the appointment, offer an alternative day. I'm attaching the screenshots of the messages because I also asked him at that point to not contact me again, yet he did. His behavior completely validates my decision for going with another company. Beware of this company!! I would think twice about using this company for Steel windows and doors. They do not have a proper paint department and use fabricators that cut corners to make more profit. Both my friend's doors and my very expensive entrance door and sidelights have a failed paint job. The paint began cracking and popping off imediately after the install. They have attempted to fix it 3 times now over the last year and a half. Every time, Russell just sends over a couple guys with rattle cans of paint and bondo. Every time they add more bondo and paint and the spray paint splatters and is done sloppy and quick. The doors look like they have been there for 20 years now, The finish is so bad! Growing up in the steel fabrication industry It was clear to me from the beginning that the steel was not properly prepared and primed before painting (these are exterior doors). If the steel is not properly prepped there is no amount of bondo and spray paint that will fix it. Now they need to be sand blasted and prepped properly to ever have a reliable finish. Now Russell won't return my calls or emails and it seems quite clear this company has no intention on making this right outside of court. They have just been making lame attempts until enough time has passed that Russell feels that he doesn't have to deal with it anymore. I've purchased steel doors from other companies for my house , installed around the same time as these doors and have had no problems with the finish. Don't use this company. read more

I am so glad I went with Texas Windows and Doors because I received a top quality wooden door at a reasonable price. My husband needed privacy doors on our open study. I spent two years trying to find a company that would make custom doors with sidelights to follow the arched opening. Finally I stumbled upon Texas Doors and Windows. Russell Shaffer visited my home within a couple days and we discussed making the project a reality. The turnaround time was quite reasonable, 4-6 weeks from start to finish. He has an amazing collection of doors in the shop; very impressive. Some of the doors are massive. I told him what I wanted and they produced beautiful Mahogany solid core doors that are gorgeous. All my neighbors are jealous! The installation crew did a really good job. Buyer Beware! See the attached photos. One is a door they installed on the exterior of our house. Clearly, this is not an exterior door, and it started showing problems within several months of installation. I emailed Russell Shafer, the owner, but he never responded. They installed two doors like this, and both are falling apart, so we will be replacing them. The other photo is a window they installed on our house. At the bottom of the window, you can see daylight straight through to the outside. When it rains, water runs down the inside wall. There are other problems too. However, my daughter loves her doors that they installed on her house. Our product and work was bad, but my daughter's was good, so I gave a 3. I contacted Russel to make me a new custom door. He came out to see what I wanted done and took some measurements. He was friendly and listened to what I wanted. The next day I made an appointment to go to his showroom and see what they offered. Wow!!! Talk about a selection of doors! I had no idea there were so many options. I came with a picture of the door I wanted, but after seeing the vast amount of options I decided to add somethings like Flemish glass and stain instead of paint for my wood door. It took about 3 weeks for the door to be built. The day of the installation his crew arrived on time and did a fantastic job. They took the old door out and installed the new one in just a few hours. They were nice and friendly. They took the trash with them and cleaned up. My door is absolutely beautiful!!! As soon as I figure out how I will add a photo. What a great experience!!! I've had several neighbors come over to see it and all are impressed. My next neighbor is now having an iron door built by Russel. I didn't know craftsmanship like this still existed!! Russell and his band of installers are the best. We've now used them for two houses. The first house just needed a simple front door. The second needed a front door, 2 sets of deck facing french doors, and 2 additional exterior doors. Between all of that madness we've referred Russell to just about everyone in our rolodex. Wow what an amazing company. Mr Russell Shafer was extremely easy to work with and very professional. The craftsmanship is second to none. They installed 27 windows and 2 custom iron entry doors along with 14 handcrafted custom made wood doors. The price was well within my budget. Unbelievably beautiful amazing craftsmanship and detail. 1/2 a star if I could. Screened patio installation was a nightmare. Installer asked me how I wanted it installed. What? Then he said he could not install dog door, after Peter in sales selected the one that would work. Section was too small for dog door. ( dogs did not shrink since product was selected.) The group that installed a storm door were professional & skilled. I was told I was wrong, in this instants, dog door was not correct. When Peter came out to resolve an issue, he was abrupt, told me I was wrong & he had 22 other projects to deal with. Wish I had picked a different company. Will never deal with this company again. Stay away from this crook! Russel Shafer is the owner of the company. He came and installed replacement glasses in a (fogged) sliding glass door on one of my rental unit. I was in-and-out of town at the time. Later, tenant complained about a draft, called him back and ask him to fix it. He went by, did something, tenant said was ok. All of this was a while back. I never really inspected the job, after not hearing back from tenant. Fast forward to now: after the October lake flood, tenant had to evacuate. In the process of rebuilding afterward, I discovered that the glasses he installed were 1" wider and 1" taller than the frame, and he had rigged the frames (including installing the doors upside down!) to somewhat fit (of course, with wide gaps and air leaks, which he "fixed" gluing weatherstripping, after the tenant's complaint). After trying to get him to come do some more glass work, including this, and not hearing back, I got another company to show up, and they confirmed that I had been swindled. According to them, he measured wrong, and when the wrong glasses arrived, rather than reorder the right ones (on his cost), he tricked me. When I confronted him on the phone yesterday, he accused me of wanted new glass for free after the flood, because "they were fine before", and cussed me out. Glass does not "grow" in water. Guy's a swindler and a crook, do not use him! read more

After receiving a hate filled, threatening text from Russel Schafer about the original review I posted, I decided to revise it. When Mr Schafer came to my house for an estimate he described the windows he was to install as "opening to the sides." As this was the first time I had windows replaced, I did not know that the correct term for such windows is "casement windows." The estimate he gave was for $3,000 for two "double hung windows." I had already received an estimate of $2,500 for two windows that slide up to open (double hung) from another company, but I chose Mr Schafer to do the job because I liked the idea of the windows opening to the side, so I paid him the $1,500 he required before he would order the windows. Weeks later when his work crew came, the windows did not open from the side, but were double hung windows that slide up. Having waited so long and having already given him $1500, I decided that I would live with these windows, but that I would not pay $500 more than another company would charge for the exact same ones. When I told Mr Schafer this, he was very rude and insulting, accusing me of being deceptive, but did accept the additional $1000 as full and final payment. I thought that was the last I would hear from him, but he read the review I posted here yesterday and sent a long, nasty, threatening text to me claiming he described the windows are they are and not as I recall. Best case scenario is that it was a communication problem and he just overcharges, requires half of the money upfront, takes weeks to deliver and becomes extremely unprofessional when disputed. Worst case scenario is that he is intentionally deceptive, requires half the money upfront, overcharges, takes weeks to deliver and becomes extremely unprofessional (including threatening) when disputed. All I can say now is that had I read the other two one star reviews here on Yelp first, I would NEVER have hired this man. (Also no one bothered to demo how the windows worked and his crew broke one of my potted plants and tried to hide it.) read more
