We stopped by Tess's kitchen and sampled the awesome "blueberry lemon curd" crepes. They were absolutely delicious! We loved the menu selection. They have quite a bit of delicious items choose from, as you can see in the menu. We settled on the Spinach Artichoke crepe. It was stuffed full of spinach, artichoke hearts and chicken in a creamy pesto sauce. It also came with a generous side dish of rice noodles mixed with some delicious seasonings. Both my wife and I shared this plate and it was plenty for us. One great thing about "Tess's Kitchen" is that Tess and her daughter was so gracious, friendly and fun to chat with. They helped my wife and I understand the menu items and even let us sample some of them. Truly awesome people making delicious and interesting food. I am so glad we stopped by. We not only discovered good food, but we feel we made some great friends.

Pork Adobo Omelet with Shanghai Lumpia.

Every time I see Manang Tess, she smiles from cheek to cheek, making you also smile that big to reciprocate. She is unique among their fellow vendors in that either she or her daughter will actually serve the food to wherever you're sitting. That's so nice! Her food is another level of awesomeness. I always boast that my mom makes the best Filipino Food (that's kinda how Filipinos are with lutong bahay), but Manang Tess comes close. Are Visayans that much better cooks? First, her Fried Rice Adobo Omelet almost matches Julie'z in Kapolei, which I have to argue has the best Fried Rice Adobo Omelet, but they serve theirs on silverware so of course it'll taste better. Second, the way Manang Tess makes munggo (balatong) is quite on par with my mom; she actually keeps the leaves on the mung beans!!! Just the way I like it. Her Lumpiang Shanghai isn't the best, but you can't win them all. I also haven't gone to her French food menu where she also specializes, so I might give it a try as well. All-in-all, my Tess Kitchen experience was so good, I had to try her twice! It's worth risking my life riding a BIKI bike from the U.H. Med School (a food desert, I tell you) to get to the Ohana Hale Marketplace for that heavenly food. I would eat here once a week if she was a bit closer to work. Check her out! She's located on the second to the last row to the right of the stage. Her soul-lifting smile awaits.

Lobster sandwich with lobster bisque- onolicious!
Cyndy K.

Cyndy's Bottom Line: Scrumptious lobster sandwich at Tess Kitchen at stall #020. We stopped in at Ohana Marketplace for a quick lunch and discovered a scrumptious, delectable lobster sandwich and delicious lobster bisque at Tess Kitchen. The lobster sandwich is served on a lightly toasted baguette with a generous amount of seasoned lobster cooked to perfection so tender and tasty. The bowl of lobster bisque is rich with flavor and a light creaminess. So delicious you will want to have more. The bag of chips go well with the lobster bisque. There is counter seating to eat in. Tess Kitchen offer a wide variety of food items from Filipino, Italian, oxtail soup and many more. They also serve desserts such as banana splits and tutti-fruiti crepes. I will definitely return to try out other items on the menu. Yummy goodness here!

Saw this place advertise on Tiny TV. So I decided to try her see what she got on her menu. She noted for her crepes and breakfast and some Filipino foods. I wanted to try her lumpia. She has banana as well as Shanghai and her veg lumpia. I ordered the veg lumpia. 4 pieces for $5.00. It was fresh because she told us she had to make it so their would be a wait. We said ok will sit at the table by center stage. She brought it over hot and it was good. Will be back to try her Filipino food next. Support the local business.

#21 review for 2019. Flavor: The Nutella and strawberry crepe had just the right amount of sauce/spread and crepe ratio - it was not sickly sweet, the strawberry was not overcooked, and the crepes had a nice "char". Ambiance: The decor was inviting with hand written menu boards and photos that made ordering/choosing easier. Value: As it was a free Y event, I can't provide an opinion on the tasting. It is $8 for the "Black N Red" (Nutella, strawberry, and chocolate sauce) but don't know what the portion size was. Service: The young ladies were very friendly and nice. I don't think they were officially part of the Yelp event so they didn't have a lot of foot traffic. They made a fresh one for me to taste - talk about customer service!

What a sweet note, right ? It really tickled me

Very pleasant experience here. The ladies were very nice. The owner is Tess and she is as sweet as can be. Great selection of food. The prices are great ! She serves Filipino / French food. Lots of varieties of crepes (which look really good but I haven't tried yet) and Filipino dishes. I will definitely visit this place regularly. You won't be disappointed.

Oxtail soup!

Tess served us soup just after closing. The rice, whiteout seasoning was delicious. The oxtail soup was very nutritious and satisfying. Great service, great value.

Adobo fried rice omelette

Honestly, I've had Tess's adobo fried rice omelette precovid and recently went during this whole pandemic. Like precovid I've already seen her prepare food without gloves and before COVID it was a norm and most times people will assume that their hands are clean. But I definitely think times have changed and I believe owners of business should follow how things are done during the pandemic. Don't get me wrong her food is great but I will the adobo fried rice omelette is just a little bit salty other than that it's really good. But this last time I went, she not wearing her mask when preparing the food and no gloves either. I was a bit disgusted to be honest because during these COVID times I'm a bit more paranoid about cleanliness. Another I've walked by and same thing she is walking around without a mask on and in her booth preparing food without her mask on! Honestly I don't think I'm wanting to come here for a little while because if a business owner herself isn't taking the precautions to prevent the spread of Covid then she isn't protecting the safety of the public and customers. I docked off 3 stars because one for being a bit on the salty side and the other two for not wearing a mask and also preparing food without gloves!

The pancit was a standout: bihon noodles perfectly stir-fried with green onions and subtle seasoning, light yet satisfying as a side that balanced the richer dishes without overwhelming. Dinuguan brought that deep, savory pork blood stew richness - tender meat in a chocolatey gravy with a vinegar kick, way better than average and not overly gamey Monggo (mung beans) was hearty and comforting, simmered smooth with malunggay or bittermelon options for that homey veggie depth - grows on you with each bite. Veggie lumpia delivered crispy perfection: fresh fillings, not greasy, and a great crunchy contrast to the stews. Generous portions at fair prices, quick service, and that lechon nearby if you want to level up next time. Solid Waipahu/Honolulu Filipino spot - will return!

My family and I were craving Filipino food and walked in hoping to get our fix. The restaurant was empty with 2 people dining in so we thought we avoided the dinner rush. Upon entering we were approached by a middle aged woman who points us to a chair and tells us "over here is fine". No greeting or acknowledgement. Even before we could get to our chair, she shouts out about 5 dishes they were out of with her back turned to us. This lady was cold and absurdly rude. We left and ended up just getting dinner from Foodland. I would've loved to have spent my money on a Filipino owned restaurant but it seemed that lady didn't want the business and never cared to help anyone that came through her restaurant. Such a very disappointing experience. I rarely drop 1 star reviews but I walked away stunned at the lack of customer service this lady displayed. Do yourself a favor and go to Elena's. They actually care about their restaurant and the people who spend their hard earned money there. I'll never be coming back. I'll also be sharing my experience so others are spared their time and money.

How prophetic- see Jennifer Y's review from a few months ago…read more Evidently Fort Ruger Market closed yesterday on April 14, 2026. Great memories over the decades. Too bad it didn't play out well. The boiled peanuts were always a buy when we were in the mood. A posting this morning on the doors indicates they will re-open after renovation (does not mention timetable). Social media indicated they closed down 4/14/26. Same owner? New owner? Totally different business? Would be a shame if the iconic "Fort Ruger Market" disappears. If you lived in Kaimuki or went to Kapiolani Community College, this store was an example of the mom n pop stores that used to dot many neighborhoods before the arrival of 7-11 and other convenience stores. They were a Kaimuki Institution for over 75+ years. Hope they come back in a new and better form. Posted notice seen 4/15/26. Note: 4/16/26- a kitv news broadcast indicated that the owner, connected with the Young Fish Market family, told KITV after renovation the bldg would be occupied by CU Korean store, and that they would carry some of the Ruger Mkt favorites like poke and boiled peanuts . Hope they can incorporate the Fort Ruger Market name. Too iconic to disappear.

Walked in, saw the case was empty but waited for the person behind the counter so I could ask him if they were making/bring any out. First off, that guy was super awkward and just stared at me without a greeting. I said hi and asked if they had any poke. He slowly shook his head and said "no, we don't have any poke right now". I asked if they were gonna bring some out. He turned around to look at the lady behind him (who was already busy doing something else) then turned back around to look at me and continued to slowly shake his head and only said "no". So I just stared back at him and said ooookkkaayyyy.... What kind of place advertises poke but not have any poke on a Saturday close to lunch time nor has staff competent enough to help. I would completely understand if I went later in the afternoon but this was only a little before lunch. And no poke?! Cmon I looked at the hot food section and didn't see any lechon. So again, I asked if they had lechon today. SAME RESPONSE - looks at the case, then looks at me, and slowly shakes his said and says "no". Ummm....alright then... I wasn't going to get anything at all after this interaction and lack of food choices but the adobo did look good so I got a bowl of that. The food itself was good, a little oily, but what pork adobo isn't? I won't be going back anytime soon. That guy was useless and awkward and poke won't be guaranteed for lunch.

The calamansi is tangy and spicy so you get a lot of flavor with a slow burn. The OG sauce is a classic soy garlic blend that is always satisfying. The yuzu buttah is not your typical lemon pepper rub. It has a nice fresh yet rich flavor. Our favorites were the OG and yuzu buttah. We're anxious to try the other flavors next.
