sushi pizza
Melody S.

we stopped here for dinner on a wednesday night. even though it was a weekday, it was very busy. luckily, there was one table left, so we were able to get seated immediately. the inside is very nice. warm, bright lights, and lively chatter. the service was also great! the food was ready REALLY fast, i was a little shocked at how fast it came out in comparison to how many dishes we ordered, but i wasn't complainin! we got the tonkotsu ramen, eel sashimi, sushi pizza (salmon), and omurice (with pork, fried rice, and black pepper sauce), and an order of the spicy girl roll. every dish was SOLID. the omurice was so fragrant, the black pepper gravy was delicious with the fried rice and egg. the sushi pizza was also a hit - all the sauces blend into the perfect, savory bite. i would definitely come back next time im in ny!

I came here with a friend at 8:30 on a Tuesday night and we were able to be seated right away. We were looking for a good sushi spot that wasn't omakase and this was the perfect spot. The basic sushi rolls were rolled so nice, fish was fresh and it was a thin layer of rice which is always a good sign of a good spot. I was leaning towards a specialty roll but all of them either had shrimp tempura or a spicy fish. I think there was one with all fresh fish but it had asparagus in it, worth a try though. I would've loved a bit more variety on that front. My friend asked for eel sauce and they do charge an extra $2 for that, which they didn't mention up front. I would like to come back and try the ramen and omurice though. My friend and I stayed for a bit and they didn't rush us at all, which I really appreciated.

Tuna Roll & Salmon Roll

I had some friends visiting from out of town and their evening opening up for a quick dinner. We were a group of 6, which can get challenging to find resys for the day of, but we had no problem getting one at Tenjuo. However, I can't say I loved every aspect of our evening. Our group was seated upstairs with a corporate party in a private room. This created for an awkward vibe as everyone else in the room knew each other except for our table. The servers also did not tell us we needed to use the table buzzer to get food going, so we were sitting for over 30 mins waiting to be acknowledged until one of us figured out the system. Once we did though, the service was fast. I just wish someone had informed us. I got the salmon and tuna roll. The rolls were fresh but I did feel they were slightly overpriced for what they were. I did try the omurice from a friend and will say, that was the star. If I was to come back, I would definitely order that for myself. Overall, the omurice is a go, but the dining experience fell short otherwise.

Great price for value and really nice variety on this menu! The interior was really nice and the service was good. The lunch special came with an app, entree, and dessert. The takoyaki was yummy as was the chicken don bowl and the matcha pudding. Definitely a repeat spot and perfect for a lunch to go as well.

You can find Tenjou at 25 W 23rd St New York, NY 10010. This was just a few blocks from where I was staying at my most recent visit to NYC. Parking is always very iffy in NYC - I'd recommend walking to locations that are within a mile of your current location or destination and skipping a drive. The restaurant is quite lovely with an obvious eye towards an Asian, and specifically a Japanese esthetic - sort of a cross between minimalist industrial and woody craftsman with neutral tones and splashes of elegant graphics and color. I was by myself having just traveled from Atlanta and the NJ Train to Penn Station. Tenjou was near my hotel in Chelsea, about a 15 minute walk. I was seated immediately (it was still pretty early) on a Wednesday night - the restaurant was pretty busy but there were 3 empty seats at the sushi bar. I had a chance to look over the general operation while seated, including the sushi chefs - everything was crisp and competently handled. Looking over the menu I decided to get their ramen and a few apps. I ordered the Pan Fried Gyoza Dumplings, a spicy Salmon roll and the Tokyo Tonkatsu Ramen extra creamy with white garlic and straight noodles. Washed this down with a mug of Asahi. The Gyoza seemed slightly under-cooked to me or it might be that I've gotten used to how it's served in the Atlanta area. They probably could have used an extra 30 seconds of steam/boil. Otherwise the flavors were very good. The ramen seemed fairly authentic from what I remember having in Japan. I still prefer homemade noods but really in most ramen places in Japan, the noodles come from a local purveyor so this is on point. The soup was delicious and the toppings great - seems corn has been added to the Tokyo style, I don't remember that but hey, times change (it's been many years since my last visit). The spicy salmon roll to me was a bit dry and not spicy enough - too much panko flake for my tastes - I'd skip this the next time. Of course this varies a lot so this might be right up your ally? I noticed that most of the diners ordered the specialty rolls so I probably just didn't order the right thing but hey, how much can you eat? The food in general was quite good and very fresh. The service as good considering I was sitting at the counter. I'd consider this a good traditional Japanese ramen restaurant. I've had better/exceptional but this is very solid. 4/5 stars

I was solo for dinner on a work trip and was seated right away without a reservation, though it got very busy after I arrived where reservations were required. I really enjoyed Tenjou because the prices are reasonable and there are so many options for small plates that one can have 2-4 different items and not break the bank. I had the pork belly yakitori, gyoza, and a tuna roll. The sushi was fresh, tender, and melted in my mouth. The yakitori was tasty but had too much sweet sauce glazed on it for my liking. And the gyoza was hot, crisp with a lovely filling and sauce. All 3 items for $23 before tip which is in budget and I got to try a variety of things. The omurice dish was VERY popular with the tables around me and one table even cheered when it came out and they said it was what they get each time they eat there. The restaurant itself has plenty of seating, sleek, and comfortable. I'd definitely return.

Overall: 4 stars Bright and vibrant restaurant in Flatiron serving up some American-adjusted takes on Japanese food in a pleasant way. I found the staff to provide attentive service and enjoyed the quality of food as well. Classic Poke Bowl - Love this bright and refreshing poke bowl with some sweey and fresh flavors that excite the palette from mango to seaweed salad to avocado. Both the eel sauce and spicy mayo adds some flavoral developments to the bowl such that every bite has its own unique flavor. Fifth Avenue Roll - Interesting roll that is spice forward come from the minced sashimi, and I like that they threw in some tempura crunch for some texture. Despite the crunch, it still eats as a soft and spicy roll in which maybe a component with firmer texture would help. Allan was the best! I've been craving ramen for a while back home in San Diego, and for our first night in NYC this place was absolutely delicious. The inside is beautiful, and there is a second floor I didn't get to see but I imagine it is just as pretty. Service was good, everyone is very attentive :)

Omurice (with Pork)
Andrew L.

Was in the area so ordered a takeout for lunch from Tenjou. The Omurice sounded unique so had to try it and ordered it with pork. It was expertly prepared and was delicious. The egg had a firm exterior but was nice and silky inside. It probably would have been even better if I had eaten it at the restaurant but it travelled fine.

Omurice

Loved the omurice! It came with the most delicious curry gravy, loved the peppery-ness, and loved the crisp of the tonkatsu on the side. Would come back, especially for the weekday lunch special!

Tenjou is a Japanese restaurant with an assorted menu and I was able to try a lot of their dishes. I had their chicken kaarage and a pork belly yakitori for appetizers. I really liked the karaage! I also had their beef gyudon, eel don, and their chicken katsu omurice. The omurice was definitely my favorite out of the three!

Josephine L.

Tenjou is fine if you need a mid-quality lunch spot that hits all the Japanese staples without hitting the bottom of your wallet. Everything we got was on the spectrum of decent to not bad, but I wouldn't make a special trip here. - Omurice: Well-made but bland. Came with onions, chicken, mushrooms, green beans, and pork, but nothing tasted special - Chicken Katsu: A bit dry - Tuna Crispy Rice: Not spicy enough and overpriced for what we got - Salmon Avocado Roll & Spicy Salmon Roll: Fine - Fifth Avenue: Get this if you want maximum fish with minimum frills. It had spicy tuna, spicy salmon, spicy yellowtail, avocado and crispy noodles, and was wrapped with soy paper - Pan Fried Gyoza Dumplings: Oddly burnt. Not good. - Spicy Tuna Gyoza: The ingredients sounded better than the execution

Omurice ($23)- generous portion of perfectly fried pork with an omelette on a bed of fried rice; the star of our meal
Daniel L.

We walked in on 7/4 and were 1 of 6 tables with Asian-presenting folks (always a good sign). We were promptly seated and ordered within 2min, receiving our food 5min later! Food- genuinely impressed for the $ - omurice $23 was impressively executed and so generously portioned - salmon tapas $18 was a nice refreshingly chilled addition - sweet potato fries $11 were so crispy and complimented the mayo-based sauce amazingly Only downside is music is a bit loud for intimate conversation, but we appreciated how casual it made the place feel. Will certainly try to be back on a future NYC trip

The ramen was so good here!! Being in your own "cubby" made the dining experience very private. The ramen came out a few minutes after placing our order. We ordered a plain ramen and one with the recommended toppings set - that came with soft boiled egg, chashu, and green onions. The broth was so rich and delicious! The noodles were cooked perfectly and made in-house! I enjoyed my meal with an ice cold refreshing Asahi! There are two self-serve water dispensers; one in the back and one in the middle. To order additional items, fill out a form and then press the call button. However, there are conflicting instructions as one sign says to just place your Kae-dama plate on top of the red call button sensor. Although we got here around 10:30 pm, there was a long line, but they offered take out and yes we did! Just like Japan, you'll get to choose: Noodle texture (I recommend firm) Original spicy red sauce level (I prefer mild) Garlic amount (extra garlic) Richness level (I like rich) Seasoning strength (dashi/saltiness level - I like less salt) Scallions (yes/no - it's a yes for me) Chashu (sliced pork, yes please!) Ichiran is a specialty ramen known for its tonkotsu broth, rich and savory. You can't go wrong coming here and if you haven't been, you have to try it! I promise you, it is life changing. Rich, savory and super comforting. Tip: don't overthink your options on the first visit, you'll be back again and again and customize it to be better than your last experience. We started with the pork belly appetizer which was recommended and stated on the menu indicating it's their featured dish. It was the biggest disappointment as it was extremely fatty with large chunks of fat, while the lean portions were dry. It didn't look very appetizing. The dumplings were just okay--they had decent flavor but I was hoping for a crispier texture. I ordered the Zebra Ramen. The noodles were cooked perfectly al dente, but the broth was much saltier than I would have preferred. The pat of butter felt unnecessary and made the broth overly rich without adding much depth. The chashu was on the small side and also quite fatty and I assume it's the same as the appetizer but was sliced instead of in large chunks. The marinated egg had good flavor, although the yolk was a little more cooked than I typically like. Another thing is the pork belly appetizer came with an egg. I wish the server would tell us so we didn't have to add it to our ramen with an extra charge. The nori was also completely soggy by the time it reached our table. Overall, the noodles were the only highlight of the meal and the rest were very underwhelming. It's definitely not a place I would recommend.
