A manager came by and apologized for such a long wait. She gave us back our money for the meal which is the reason it received the two stars. Visiting NAFs sister in Marquette. After a day of driving and a large lunch. Sis said, I wish there was a sushi place in town. I whip out the Yelp app and looked nearby for sushi. Up pops Temaki, sis says she had never heard of it. I said it's next to a smoothie place... We find the place and it's located in the same space as a smoothie king. Coming in about 15 minutes before close, we were greeted by a happy and energetic staff. It took a few minutes to study the menu as it's an abbreviated menu for a typical sushi place. 2 California rolls, an Alaskan roll and an order of wontons. While waiting we took a look around the place, they have a traditional Japanese kneeling table, a fireplace and several traditional seating arrangements. While waiting, I studied the Smoothie King menu, TMI... many choices and not into that for today at least. Everyone enjoyed their sushi and wontons. I had minor complaints about the sushi. Too much rice, it's supposed to be about an inch in diameter, not almost 2" and almost impossible to put in your mouth, let alone handle with chopsticks. The other issue, going back again was to as for triple the ginger and triple the wasabi. There were two quarter size slices of ginger with each roll and the wasabi was about the size of a pea. A couple of tweaks and they are in the perfect zone. We might not be back for awhile, but I'm sure sis is going to go there on a regular basis. Update Aug 2018. The quality of food at Temaki & Tea has gone downhill over the past few years. It is inconsistent depending on the day you're there. My guess is the management is the culprit. It seems the oversight over the preparation and quality control/ assurance is not there like it was a few years ago. We have eaten here a lot over the years so this isn't based on one trip. As an example, Recently we had the the whitefish bites and the fish was way over cooked. That is sacrilege for meats. I've noticed the sushi rolls will be great one day and sloppy another. We noticed the menu choices have diminished and the small extras they used to provide such as various Asian condiments are gone. I know the excuse may be cost yada yada yada but that would be a telling sign of management issues. Let's hope they consider this as constructive input and get back to the higher quality they had a few years ago. read more

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises is how good the sushi is at Temaki & Tea. My boyfriend brought me here after I was feeling home-sick and craving sushi after being in Marquette for a while. I had little to no expectations of this place before we stepped in. But as I walked in, I won't lie, I did have a little bit of judgement. First of all, Temaki & Tea is connected to a smoothie place called Smoothie King. Secondly, it was stated that the restaurant was owned by the university, thus having university students as staff. Nothing wrong with students but I'm just more used to having my sushi made by sushi chefs. I'll admit my fault; I was way too quick to judge. I noticed that they had Spider Roll (Deep fried soft-shell crab) on their menu so that was an obvious choice that I wanted to try. I also order the Spicy Tuna Roll (Raw tuna, spicy Sriracha sauce, asparagus, and avocado). Service was great, waited about 15 minutes for them to bring our order over to our table. We opted for Jasmine Green Tea to complement our meal. The presentation of both the Spider roll and Tuna roll was appealing, a very simplistic and tasteful plate. The portion size of the rolls was very nice, the ratio of rice to filling was a good balance and the rolls were consistently cut. The Tuna roll wasn't bad but it was definitely a shadow compared to the Spider roll. I've never had a sushi roll with asparagus in it but it did give the roll a nice contrast to the soft Tuna. I've also never had a roll that use just Sriracha as the "spicy" (generally the Sriracha is mixed in with Japanese mayo). Although, I found these differences to be strange, the roll was fairly decent. The Spider roll was wonderful. The crab had a nice crunch yet was not greasy or overpowering. The inside of the crab was moist but warm, which made for one very appetizing roll. Many other places stuff their Spider rolls with avocado and cucumbers and it becomes more about the other filing textures rather than bring out the flavour of the crab. The Spider roll at Temaki & Tea really hit the spot and was surprisingly one of the best Spider rolls I've had. (I've since learned that the Spider roll has been discontinued from Temaki & Tea which is really disappointing!) I've been to many sushi places and I wouldn't have ever expected that Marquette would have a restaurant like Temaki & Tea. Yes it is student run and yes, they share a space with a smoothie place but man, they do make a great Spider roll. read more

I will agree with the assessment that the food is good and reasonably priced. Wait was minimal to average, food was hot and yummy. Warm in temperature, spiciness level low to average. I had an asparagus tamaki roll, jasmine tea (my friend had a free coupon yay), and the shanghai peanut noodle bowl with tofu. Even with the discount, the price was around 11$. Servings were generous. My friend's General Chicken was a large size also. I like the atmosphere too. This restaurant is combined with a smoothie king too, can't comment on those as it was not smoothie weather (as it was snowy out) for me. Friend says they are good though. read more

Here's a quirky combination of Japanese cuisine and American smoothie bar. Crazy, right? Who would ever come up with that idea? Beats me, but I like it as a nice change of pace for a fast meal when I'm tired of burgers and fries. The kids love the uramaki and the wontons, and I can vouch for the bento box and the cashew chicken. I wouldn't put Temaki & Tea up against a place like Ootoya in New York City, but it's a nice alternative in Marquette to burgers and fries when you just want a fast meal in a pleasant setting. I maybe shouldn't even write a review, since I ended up walking out before ordering. I was completely craving some simple rolls... A spicy tuna or crab and maybe a California roll... I pull up to the drive through. Nothing on the menu but smoothies. So I feel like an idiot when I have to tell the girl i'll just go inside. I walk inside and 1 person is in front of me. In their yoga outfit, carrying their yoga mat. Did I just walk in to stereotype-land? I wait 15 in line... As I'm waiting, I look at the menu... I'll give this place two stars for the delicious smoothies and sweets and very courteous staff but the food we had was awful. Being from Chicago, this is not what I would call sushi or good Asian food, or even close to it. The shrimp tempura was tasteless and confusing. It wasn't even tempura batter and lacked crunch or flavor! The sweet and sour sauce didn't help either. The sushi was not fresh looking. I have had four meals here and would rate two as as average and two as very good. The variance may depend upon the person preparing, the time of day in relation to freshness and the source of the ingredients including the fish and vegetables. If you have any doubts about the food coming out of a package or being prepared for your order you need only to stand at the counter and observe the process. No, you will not get the quality at a highly rated east or west coast Asian restaurant but you are getting a reasonable price for a northern Midwestern located franchise. If you are going to make a stink about wait time then go to the local supermarket and pick a couple of items out of the refrigerator or frozen food section that you can nuke in your kitchen. They have an assortment of items ranging from appetizers, to stir fry to different types of sushi. Overall, a good spot for something other than the greasy kids' stuff. My bill for the teriyaki salmon roll, narigi, miso soup and dragon well green tea was $13.29. All items tasted very good and the meal was satisfying. The wait time was six minutes. BTW, the adjoining franchise Smoothie King offers three sizes of many types of smoothie drinks (that could be a meal or dessert) ranging from about $5.50 to $8.75. It is owned by Northern Michigan University and staffed by mostly students. So give some tolerance to the student workers who are above the average fast food server and, in my experience, have always tried to provide the best efficient service. read more

Prices are a little higher than they should be, but not by much. The only real downside is that it's all made by college kids, so the quality is sometimes up and sometimes down. You never really know what you'll end up with. But, if the roll comes out a little loose, just use some chopsticks, right? Anyway, they have a decent selection of sushi and temaki rolls, and their tempura and noodle bowls aren't bad either. Just a few years ago, I used to love this place. I had never been disappointed with any of the ten or so meals I had eaten here. My favorite was the Miso Honey Whitefish. It was loaded with veggies, the whitefish was perfectly cooked, there was actual miso and it was all served over brown rice by someone who knew how to prepare brown rice. Then things started to change. The brown rice was switched out for non-memorable white. The amount of veggies served was reduced. The whitefish was over cooked, a little burnt in spots. I commented on this to the manager. Sorry, she said. The new cook is at the bottom of the learning curve. I didn't go back for a while hoping that when I did return I would benefit from their newly acquired skills. On my next visit to this restaurant several months later, it seemed that the cooking staff had learned a thing or two. The Miso Honey Whitefish had improved but still wasn't as good as it had ever been. During the course of the year I tried other dishes too. They were ok but nothing was great. Eventually, I wasn't inspired to return. Then, a few weeks ago, a friend asked me to meet her for dinner at Temaki. Being the optimist that I am, I eagerly ordered the Miso Honey Whitefish, hungry for the eumami that only miso can deliver. When my meal arrived, I was a bit surprised by its appearance. There were no cooked veggies, only some raw shredded carrots and something else that I couldn't ID plus a few bits of green onion scattered hither and yon. I couldn't see anything that looked like miso but there was a trail of red sauce zigzagging across a piece of dry looking fish. It was served on top of a sad, old ball of white rice. It sure didn't look like any Miso Honey Whitefish I had ever had. Still, I was very hungry and hopeful to the point of being vulnerable to own and other's deception. The restaurant was closing soon. My friend and I were busy talking. I tried to eat this dish l remembered as marvelous and hoped had returned. But it had not. The red sauce was so spicy hot that I found the dish inedible. I asked the food service person for a remedy, say coconut cream or even plain yogurt. He apologized and gave me a bowl of plain yogurt. Because of the dental work I had done earlier in the day, this was my first meal of the day. I continued to try to eat. But then something even more odd became apparent. The fish seemed to have been coated in sugar before it was fried. Over fried at that. I will remember this meal for a long time. It is one of the WORST I have ever had! read more

We don't have many Sushi choices in the area so it's a shame that this place doesn't live up to what it should. The food there is very inconsistent along with the customer service. Majority of the time the workers are not friendly/approachable and they just don't look like they want to be there. It's a shame to see when most of the workers seem to be college students who should have a little bit more experience in customer service. The time it takes to get your food also takes a very long time. You will be told it will be ready in 20 minutes, but it always is 10 minutes longer than what they say when you call in. read more

If you are going to come here it is not worth getting the noodle dishes like generals chicken. To me it's not nearly as delicious as some other places in town. I do enjoy their sushi though. It may not be the most life changing sushi you've ever had but it does satisfy any cravings. I suggest if you get the crunchy shrimp roll get it without the teriyaki glaze. The first time I got it the bottom of the dish was soaked. I also wish they kept the California roll to the classic California roll recipe - without the egg and masago. Temaki & Tea, located at the edge of Northern Michigan University, surprised me. I had few expectations since my husband described it as a "fast food" sushi place. We had the Eye of the Tiger, Dynamite, and Spicy Tuna Rolls. They all tasted pretty good and had just the right amount of different texture factors for me in a sushi roll. My kids seemed to enjoy their California Rolls. Although my children did not order it, this establishment also has a Bento Box designed for kids as well as some simple noodle dishes, so I would say that kids can eat here although parents may want to exercise caution and check it out beforehand for kids who are really picky about their food. Overall, I would eat here again but probably wouldn't frequent it as much as I do my local sushi establishment back in Indiana. read more

At first glance, I wasn't too impressed. I was expecting a sit-down place. But then we got the crab wonton appetizers and it was delicious. We waited for what felt like an hour before we got our meals. Then after getting our meals, I got the teriyaki salmon and my mother got the tuna nigiri and philly roll, the teriyaki salmon was alright. The tuna nigiri was like any other raw fish and rice.
