This was a college staple 10 years ago when Aoy and Josh were running the shop so I figured they'd put the Rice Paddy in good hands after retirement and they did not disappoint. Nang and her husband are absolute gems (she does the cooking, he takes the orders and serves with a smile!). They learned the recipes and techniques from Aoy, the OG, and they still do it just as great. I had the grilled orange chicken, wontons, and hot and sour soup (absolutely to die for, my favorite spicy soup for kicking a cold). The food was piping hot, huge portions, great taste and flavor, and I had a great time learning about the business in its new hands! The building is exactly the same as it's always been--a homey ambiance, small counter for ordering with a few stools for the patiently waiting customers, to-go meal supplies like cutlery and napkins, and local business cards hung by the door promoting the other hard workers in this little Yooper town. Take out only, the owner is a smooth talker. I ordered sweet-and-sour chicken asked for fried rice. I was told it was four dollars extra for fried rice because they add vegetables to it. I got it, and it was like white rice and sauce. The sweet-and-sour sauce was so heavy and sweet on it. The chicken had no batter/ breading. The vegetables were soggy. I then ordered a shrimp eggroll what was like eating coleslaw deep fried, nothing like an eggroll I ever ate. Crab wontons, average. All for 27.00 never going back! read more

It breaks my heart, but no. I will not come back here and I will not eat this food again. The gentleman that took the order could not have been more friendly and, honestly, he is the two stars. He's the reason that I can say some good things, because his attitude and customer service is clearly 110%. And the food tasted good. Of course it did. Because it was so. darn. greasy. Heavily weighted. My stomach woke me in the middle of the night and made it clear that it was not happy. We looked forward to getting food from the Rice Paddy when we came back to Marquette after 14 years. My wife ordered Pad See Ewe with fried tofu and I ordered Pad Thai with fried tofu. When we got back to our B&B we could not tell the difference between the two! Both had rice on one half of the container and while noodles with fried tofu on the other. Neither contained sauces nor vegetables, aside from broccoli on the top of one. Food was bland and not worth 5 cents let alone $20 that we paid!! Feel sorry for NMU students who grew up with parent(s) or older siblings who went to Northern and raved about Aoy and The Rice Paddy when they went there. Try the Thai House on 3rd street. Never eaten there out of loyalty to Aoy. She had been someone who we have known and admired for over 25 years. If a student couldn't afford a dinner, she would reach in her "tip bowl" and use that money to pay for it: saying "you pay next time girlfriend/boyfriend." People would leave Money in the tip bowl for such occasions and it was always over flowing; just like Valentine Michael Smith's church from Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. This place is a local favorite. I haven't eaten here for years because I found the food to be fairly bland and the very few vegetarian options to be unsatisfying. I don't want to say that it's the worst Thai food I've had, but every other place I've gone to eat Thai food is more enjoyable. The prices here are not bad, but they don't really feel worth it, unfortunately. It's also very busy because of how popular it is, which often creates a bit of a weight for pickup. We were craving Asian food and discovered this place on Yelp and Google. The place is only open for takeout and they are cash only. Highly, highly recommended is to order via phone so you can pick it up later. We did not know this and walked in. Turned out it will take 1 hour 30 minutes for our orders to be ready as they have SO MANY orders. But since we were not in a rush and were already in the mood for it, we decided to went for it anyway and explore the town while waiting. We ordered vegetable stir fry (carrot, broccoli, water chestnut), fish in lemon sauce, both of which came with white rice and 1 piece of crab rangoon, and we also ordered an almond roll. The almond roll is actually a giant egg roll filled with stir-fried vegetables (mostly cabbages) and almonds. It's really huge and somewhat greasy. The crab rangoon is sweet. Both the stir fry and the fish were presented very differently than what I would expect. The vegetable stir fry was extremely saucy and was a little bit too sweet. The lemon sauce was sharply sour. The food feels greasy and to be honest might not be what I would call authentic, but I feel like Asian food in the area is so scarce that this is not a terrible place if you really have cravings. This is a solid 3.5 stars but saying 4 stars is grading on a curve based on not expecting to find Thai food in a smaller town. 5 star service and friendliness. 3 star ambiance so I did it as takeout and went to the beach. Food was a 3.5 Stars. The egg roll was a bit too greasy. It didn't need so much oil. The green curry chicken was tasty but I wish the sauce was thinner and the veggies more plentiful. I will forever be confused by the "authentic" all over the menu and walls. The Pad See Ew was anything but authentic. Strangely sweet, goopy, thick spaghetti style noodles, zero gravy, and a couple of pieces of broccoli thrown in and then served with rice and hot sauce on the side. Pad Thai was the same with a tad more flavor. Both reminded me of Lo Mein with sugar added. Giant egg rolls? Yes. It's a tad weird. HANDS DOWN THE BEST THAI FOOD EVER. Aoy and Josh are the perfect tag team when it comes to running this spot. It's a simple little hole in the wall, but hands down one of the best restaurants and beyond affordable. The cream cheese wantons are a must, as well as the Sweet and Sour chicken was a favorite of mine. It's important to know that they get extremely busy, especially during lunch and will have extremely long waits...so depending when you need your food make sure you call early. They also don't accept credit cards and only cash, so be prepared if its your first time here. :) I moved from Marquette three years ago and I'm still always talking about how great Aoy is and how good the food it. I've been going to this place for 10 years. I'm done now. Last year, we picked up 5 meals. They were just, okay. I decided to give it another try. Last week, I brought up 5 friends from GReen Bay. I was ranting and raving how amazing the food was. I ordered the squash curry. That is not what I got. I wasn't upset that my order was incorrect- it gave me a chance to try something else. Well, the something else tasted like a thick tasteless flour roux. Ew. My other friend bought a beef item which only had 2 pieces of very thinly shaved pieces of beef, the size of quarters. I tasted that plate and it was just blah. I'm going to try a different Thai place next time. This place does have new owners.
