You cannot beat a classic, especially when it's patio season and the Summer Shandies are on tap. Smokin'Hubster and I popped in for lunch and had a fabulous time. We rarely sit outside but this patio beckoned and we were helpless to resist. There's even outdoor seating available if you arrive before the restaurant is open! Silas brought us menus and took drink orders right away. We enjoyed the season's first shandies while exploring the menu. His attention was perfect and we shared some laughs each time he returned to our table. Neither one of us wanted to share (I guess) so we each ordered our own appetizers. I can never get enough smoked whitefish spread... until it's ALL MINE! I enjoyed every bite and would do it again. Patrick ordered the walleye strips and he did offer me a bite (generous devil that he is). They were perfectly crisp without being heavy or greasy. We were seated by Rachel, who was a wealth of information and couldn't have been more genuine in welcoming us. Thereafter, our server Silas was perfection. The outdoor patio has been given expert attention in becoming a beautiful oasis. Located in downtown Marquette on Washington St near the post office/city hall. Found this place because we needed a dog friendly patio that allowed our dog to sit with us not outside of the patio. Winner, winner, chicken dinner. There is an indoor and outdoor waiting area. It was nice to wait outside with our pup. While we were waiting, we ordered cocktails at the bar. The staff were so friendly. They loved our pup! He was spoiled with a few milkbones. Once we were seated, we ordered the single serving of nachos and the baked whitefish dinners. The nachos are huge! Loved that they bake the entire thing which makes the cheese nice and melty. Perfection! My husband and I ordered the whitefish dinner. We started with French onion soup and the breadsticks which were both good, but took forever to come out. The place was busy, but nothing crazy. I could not believe how long our food took- we were there for almost an hour and 45min! Service was average, our waitress just acted like the long wait was normal. Good thing we had drinks and an appetizer! For dinner we ordered wraps and the Cobb salad. My friends said their wraps were good. Went with two friends for dinner. It was a 30-45 min wait to get a table so we sat at the bar and had a drink while we waited. The entrance gets really crowded with people waiting for a table and there ends up being nowhere to stand. The inside of the restaurant is super cute and beautifully decorated. My friend and I ordered the regular cheeseburger well-done... now I've had many well-done burgers before that were cooked appropriately. I just don't like pink ground beef. Anyway, my burger was super burnt on the outside so it wasn't great. My other friend ordered a chicken burger and she said it was very good. It was my first visit! A relative who returned to the area spent a lot of time at this place when he lived nearby. Apparently, like the very best things in the UP, this place hasn't changed! The breadsticks were reminiscent of beer-nuggets from college days. The cheese spread came with the bread and was yummy. The pizza was tasty, but a little soggy for my taste. The service was great! Why 4 stars and not 5? The host could be heard complaining about tourists, and not just once. As a former tourist who loves living here, it made me uncomfortable for the families clearly visiting and enjoying their vacation days. But I will be back! Our super friendly waitress made this a nice afternoon stop. We had our dog so requested a patio table. The guy who seated us said we just nabbed the last table, but when we went outside, there were more empty tables than occupied tables, hmmm. They had a small selection of beer but mostly craft beers which is what we prefer. Bonus, the waitress actually knew about each beer so that was helpful since we are not from Michigan. Food was ok, nothing spectacular, but no complaints. I got a burger. Sandwiches come with chips and I'm fine with that. I did notice upcharges for fried or rings were pretty steep though (5.50 upcharge for rings!) We would definitely go here again. I know The Portside doesn't need my positive review as it is one of the crown jewels of Marquette, but I'm going to leave it anyway. My daughter and I stopped in on a busy Friday night. We were in no hurry and didn't mind the 20 minute wait. Once we were seated we were greeted by our super friendly waitress. We placed our order and got our drinks and enjoyed conversation. Our breadsticks came out (as well all know they are the best breadsticks in the land) and we enjoyed them. A bit later our waitress came back and said, "sorry your pizza is taking so long, we had a little issue, it bubbled funny and the kitchen wasn't satisfied with it." A minute or two later the manager came out with 2 plates with 2 pieces of pizza on each. He said, "we were able to salvage these pieces if you want to start with them?" A couple minutes later our pizza came out (which we ended up boxing). Our waitress came and apologized again. When she brought our check, she let me know that she took one of our drinks off and brought our a couple containers of their world famous cheeses spread. I am torn between 2 and 3 stars for rating the Portside. I am defaulting to the 3rd star because we were kind of stuck for a place to eat and they don't use reservations so we were told we could put our names on a list and get a table within the hour, and they did manage to seat us within the hour. It was confusing how seating was handled and I overheard some people invited to sit at the bar, an invitation I don't remember hearing from the person who took our name. I also saw people seated in the outside, open air patio that seemed to move inside; but our table was eventually an outdoor one, under a tree that we were assured would protect us if the gathering clouds decided to start raining. Then we were assured, if it started to rain, there was a table inside for us. (Our meal hadn't arrived, so I asked my guest, if there is a table I wonder why they don't just move us, but the food arrived and we managed to finish before the drops became regular.) My guest ordered French Onion soup and a side salad, and her side salad was very good and included homemade Bleu cheese that she enjoyed very much. She said the soup was hot and tasty. I ordered the Philly Steak sandwich and beer battered Onion rings. The onion rings were delicious. The Steak Sandwich was disappointing. I have been in restaurant management almost 10 years and food services almost 30, and I was hoping a Steak sandwich would have been cooked on a grill or seared in a skillet, but I recognize Shredded beef that is kept hot in a very weak broth, or just heated in hot water, or "nuked". There was no seasoning. It could have been helped by the onions, green peppers, mushrooms and cheese that should have been on it, but it seemed like they were heated, but also not seasoned either. Ironically, a couple of days later, I was heading home through Chicago and stopped at Portillo's, the famous Italian beef restaurant and got the Large Beef sandwich that was lightly dipped in their "gravy" which is a seasoned beef broth, no cheese or vegetables, and it was an amazing contrast to this sandwich that had vegetables and a very good bun. As a suggestion, if the beef was dipped into some onion soup before putting it on the bread it would have been worth another star. Finally, the open air seating has a pleasant atmosphere and the restaurant encourages a relaxed atmosphere in the area, but I assume that the standards and Health codes should still apply.
