I was between this location and the one and 28th and decided to check this one out. Before walking a mile, I checked Yelp and Google to ensure that the restaurant was open. Everything on the internet, including their website, indicated the restaurant was open. However, upon arriving and entering, I was told by 4 men that the restaurant was closed for a private event. The door was open, there was no signage, and when I walked in men were eating and just proceeded to stare at me. Their behavior deeply unwelcoming. Moreover, they could have offered me some water before turning me away. HORRIBLE TAKEOUT OPTION! I have ordered takeout sushi twice from Temakase NYC location and both times was extremely disappointed. The first time I placed an order for pickup and had requested alternates for rolls in one of their preselected sushi boxes which is an option they give you. However, they did do the correct replacements and also had a roll that I had not wanted and asked to change, completely getting half my order wrong even though I had been clear about what I wanted. The second time was a delivery order from a different NYC location that took half an hour longer than the original hour long delivery estimate. Why did it take them an hour and half to prepare my simple order of a NOM box? On top of that, both times when I tried to contact them about these issues, the phones for two different NYC locations were not hooked up and not working, despite me placing the second order a month later. So both times I had to email someone about the issue. There are so many quality sushi places at the same price point (sushi hatsune, sanyuu west, Joji, kazunori, even sugar fish for a little more $$) that I have had much better experience and honestly quality at. 0/10 would not recommend wasting your time and money read more

Quick and easy service where you don't need to think too much to enjoy a meal. 4 rolls for $28 - scallop, blue crab, salmon, tuna (and can choose between regular or spicy versions for each). The five roll set includes a Toro handroll. Innovative flavors for each roll but I think that they utilize a little too much sauce. Added the everything bagel handroll at the end because of my curiosity. I think it is worth a try, it is very unique and jampacked with flavor. Service is stellar!! I sat at the bar by myself and had the "Hungry Hand Roll Set". You sre able to select original or spicy for each hand roll in the set. For the scallop I wanted original but the server made a mistake and gave me a spicy one. He allowed me to have the spicy one and made me the original one at the end to make up for it. The original was definitely better with the scallop. Even though the hand rolls were decent in size, you can alter by letting your server know if you want less rice. I think I will put this place for a quick easy breezy lunch or dinner. Here's why. I had this place on a list so I walked in when it wasn't so packed. The person at the front guided me and made sure of my options whether takeout or dine in. They offer combos of their handrolls from 3 - 6 choices. In each roll, you have the option of choosing a spicy toppings or a "classic" one. For example, the scallop offered either yuzu honey mustard and tobiko (classic) or chili butter aioli with chili flakes and tempura crumbs. You can mix and match the spicy and classic hand roll. I took the 6 handroll ("hangry") combo and it was pretty filling. For $38, I had a decent meal plus the rolls were not skimpy (not overstuffed but not decent). When I had to leave earlier than expected, they allowed me to put the rest of my rolls in a to go box. The music wasn't too loud so I could have conversation with someone. As a big Kazunori fan, I didn't love this. We went on a Tuesday night and made a reservation for 2. That was definitely unnecessary, as there were only about 6 other people in the restaurant. As soon as we sat down, they were trying to take our order which felt a little forced and rushed. I understand this sort of dining experience is usually face-paced but we were in and out of here within/possibly under 30 minutes. I felt as though I couldn't even fully enjoy the food, as soon as you finished a handroll the next one was in front of you. We started off with the salmon cripsy rice, this was actually very good and probably the only thing I would come back for. I then got the Hungry hand roll set which comes with 4 handrolls for $26, again the kazu prices are better and in my opinion for better quality. I think a handroll should highlight the fish and the main issue I had with temakase was the add on ingredients that took away from the fish and attributed interesting and unnecessary flavor profiles. I subbed the scallop for toro, this was good but not amazing. Then the salmon was decent. I did not like the tuna and cannot even remember the fourth one I got. I will say the restaurant had a cute vibe and aesthetic, however, I would rather eat in a hole in the wall with amazing food. I definitely think you can skip this and head over to kazu. I'm sorry, I wasn't impressed. Seemed to me like a pompous place for entitled Americans who don't want to or can't learn how to use chopsticks. Didn't have miso soup (I should have left when I learned they didn't have it), and the sushi rice that ordered came on some cheap a@@ little lightweight plastic plate. The hot honey miso salmon hand roll and the spice salmon crispy rice (bites?) were mediocre, not impressive. The sushi rice was the best tasting menu item that I ate. My friend doesn't like scallops and was easily able to switch out that particular roll for another. Service was quick and friendly. It was a chill, causal atmosphere. The Salmon was pretty good too, with slight citrusy undertones due to the yuzu flavors. The Scallop was also yummy and tender with a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The Sweet Chili Rock Shrimp was a giant piece of deep fried shrimp and the chili sauce tasted like a thai chili sauce. It was good but I wasn't too impressed. Crispy Rice is one of my favorites and I thought the Miso Avocado Crispy Rice was my favorite thing of the entire meal. The miso avocado mixture was creamy, rich, and slightly sweet and laid perfectly on top of the crispy rice. The Spicy Tuna one was also good and the tuna very fresh, but it was fairly standard. When my initial plans in the East Village fell through, I was looking for a place for a quick lunch and stopped by Temakase. Surprised at how quickly they were able to seat my party of 2 as a walk in. With the Yelp check in, we got a free serving of crispy rice! We opted for the spicy yellow tail. Fish was solid and the rice was freshly fried, with a nice ratio of the two. For the hand rolls, there are set menus with 3-6 rolls and you can also order al la carte. The size of the rolls were bigger than other places. Pacing was appropriate. Seaweed was crispy and ratio of rice to ingredient was very good! To name some highlights, the ikura salmon and toro scallion were both solid and very fresh. The tuna crunch featured crunchy bites without taking the spotlight away from the fish. The spicy scallop and blue crab were both creamy, although the former could have been a little bit more spicy with its mayo. The restaurant itself has two sections of high top tables.
