This is a place I've been going to since the 1900s (as my kids love to remind me ). I didn't expect much. Things had changed since my childhood days, but the food had always remained good! I just missed the days when the same guy worked the grill and knew my name and my order by heart. But then, today... There was Karen. Yes, Karen!! Standing over a grill in 117° Arizona heat, she greeted us with patience, kindness, and an actual smile. She let my son take his time ordering without making him feel rushed. And when the ketchup was empty, she didn't shrug it off or point us in another direction. She didn't hand me a thousand little packets since the pump was empty. She simply took care of it. Was it just ketchup? Sure. But it also wasn't. It was someone choosing to care. When other patrons had notified other staff multiple times it was out - Karen found a simple solution without excuses! These days... that feels rare. We've spent years turning the name "Karen" into a punchline. But today, I met the kind of Karen the world could use a whole lot more of. If you're her manager and you're reading this... take good care of her. Promote her. Clone her if science ever figures that out. We came here for national glizzy day and and it was busy. I had never been to Ted's so this was my first visit. We waited in line to to order and after waiting about 25 minutes, we were helped. The cashier was stressing but was friendly. We ordered three traditional hot dogs with everything on top and a side of bacon cheese fries. Since it was national glizzy day, our hot dogs were supposed to be BOGO. We sat down and waited another 25 minutes until finally our buzzer beeped. We picked up our tray and noticed we were only given 5 hot dogs, not 6. We didn't mention anything just because we saw how busy it still was. The hot dogs were actually pretty good. They were a decent size and flavorful. We really liked the bacon fries and it was enough to share between us three. Ted's is my favorite hot dog spot in the Valley, and it keeps earning that title. There's a clear East Coast influence here, down to the details--like bottles of malt vinegar out for self-service, which is perfect over their fries, and Buffalo NY newspaper copies. And those fries are excellent on their own: thin-cut, crisped just right, with bits of potato skin mixed in for texture. The dog lineup is solid, with plenty of variety, but I usually stick with the all-beef frank. Everything's made to order, so there's typically a bit of a wait, but you get a buzzer so you can mind your own business while waiting. The space is a plus too, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. On my latest visit, a large group of bicyclists rolled in--some in full hot dog costumes, others in hot dog-print gear. They were all super friendly and cleaned up after themselves and it added to the whole experience. Ted has been around for a long time. Way back in the day they only took cash. So it was a little bit of a pain in the ass to make sure she had enough cash to bring friends. Simple place... Open fire, roasting hotdogs... Getting your order while you're in line. But worth it. Very simple inside. Nothing fancy... Just good hotdogs and fun. Grew up when this place first arrived but never tried it until now. Place was empty. Asked about the award wining Shanghai La tea and what it taste like. Worker said it's just regular tea. lol. I havent been here for over 20 years.. I came here once because my friend said they have the best hot dog. Met up with my friend for 2nd run. I know this place have been here for a while and they are known for their "griled" hot dogs.. Ordered two foot long with everything that comes on "free" added. Little over $15 for two hot dogs, I don't know I felt like it was bit pricey. Over all hot dog was pretty good. Came from west Phoenix to get a great hot dog. Little bit of a wait in line but it went pretty fast. Lots to choose from. Hot dogs, corn dog and even burgers. I love that you can split your fries and onion rings so I didn't have to make a choice. They have shakes too! I got the orange cream shake and it was all I'd hoped for. Everything was delicious and did not disappoint. Corn dog had a nice crunchy exterior. Works hot dogs have hot sauce , relish onions tomatoes and a good size pickle. So good! Shake was huge. I have lived in Arizona for over 10 years and have known about Ted's and its long-standing history in Tempe and finally tried it. Other than the fact that it was pricier than I expected for a hot dog stand, wish I would've tried Ted's sooner. I love hot dogs - and I love this place and their grilled hot dogs!! I stopped here for a quick to go lunch. The ordering at the counter was quick and fast. You walk up and they give you a pager after you tell them your order. I ordered fries and two hot dogs. They came out quick. I love that you get to customize how you want your hot dogs cooked such as well done. The hot dog and the fries came out hot and fresh. The fries were good and crispy with the right amount of salt. The hotdog was good but not great, there was a lack of flavor for the chili, just something missing to take it over the edge but it was good. The only issue was the meal costs $20 for two hotdogs and fries which seems very expensive. I'm not in a rush to go back but it was nice to be able to grab a hotdog on the go and have it to be served fresh and hot. We've been coming here for years, and this is the first time we've had a disappointing experience. The wait for our food was much longer than usual, and by the time it was served, it wasn't as hot or fresh as we've come to expect. I believe the management may want to spend some time retraining the person working the grill. The previous grill cook was outstanding and knew how to stage the orders efficiently and kept everything moving while making sure the food came out hot and fresh. I'm sharing this review because we genuinely enjoy eating here and want to see the restaurant succeed. I hope management sees this feedback and addresses the issue. Been driving by Ted's for years and finally decided to place an order a couple of days ago. It was so great to be able to order and quickly pick it up. It was late and the door was locked, but the staff opened up the door and gave me my order. It was kid, friendly, affordable, and centrally located so where ever the kids and I were, we usually stopped by Ted's on the way home to the East Valley. It's been about 15 years since I have been a regular and Man things haven't changed much except for the interior and the overall operation. But all the best parts are still the same and boy are these some of the best hotdogs in the valley! I didn't go with anything fancy this time just three regular all beef hotdogs done with a variety of fixings, including Ted's special hot sauce. As with everything now, prices are a little more expensive, but still very affordable when you compare them to other spots in the valley. Service as always was excellent, although there wasn't really anybody in line when we arrived. I would definitely recommend checking the spot out if you're in the area. read more

The hot dogs were very good! They are cooked over charcoal and have a very nice flavor. We got a good mix of toppings on the hot dogs. The chili was delicious. I personally did not love the cheese, I thought it was too salty, but my partner really liked it! The potato salad tasted very fresh. The fried pickles were so good. When I was younger, people raved about this place and I was told that I HAD to try it. It is the only one in AZ (I think the only location outside of New York) and they do a great job with grilled sausages. There's an old-school restaurant vibe that is similar to some famous pastrami shops in California. Maybe that's just me and remembering the feeling of similar spots from my childhood. It is not anything fancy, but a clean place to sit and enjoy your fast food, fast. Tip: pay attention as you get towards the grill and be prepared to order when it is your turn. The plain hot dogs are just that. They're grilled over hardwood charcoal in front of you and you can add a wide array of toppings, some of which are free and others which are not. Besides the hot dogs, I like the white hot, "Schreiner's pork and veal white hot cooked over real hardwood charcoal served on a potato bun," with mustard and onions. Probably my German heritage. They've got an extensive list of their food with common allergens on their website, so you can check before you go whether the onion rings, for example, contain dairy. read more

Still my favorite restaurant in the Phoenix area, and still the restaurant I would have my "last meal" at if I ever had to move out of Phoenix. I love it that much. The only reason I don't go as much is because its far away from my house in Surprise. Had to pick up my Mom from the airport last week, so I went here first for some dinner. Everyone loves a bargain, so when Ted's Hot Dogs offered a BOGOF promotion, I couldn't pass on the deal. Ted's Hot Dogs in Tempe pays homage to it's Buffalo, NY roots. Walk in and you're immediately greeted by a newsstand with both the Buffalo News and the Arizona Republic in case you want to catch up on the news of the day for either city. The walls are adorned with touches of Buffalo, such as a photo of Buffalo City Hall with the THD mascot directly in front. (Looks like a parade float.). I miss some other decor such as UB and Buff State pennants which were removed long ago. As you enter the restaurant, you're immediately hit with the aroma of toppings. "Onion" is not my favorite scent, but it comes with the territory. Thank goodness the grill is there to "balance" it. Back to the BOGOF ... the cashier seemed new and incorrectly charged me for an item I didn't order, then seemed to have difficulty figuring out how to use the register to make a correction. What I really wanted was a coney but, sadly, they aren't offered. The dining area isn't fancy, but serves its purpose. It was neat and clean with plenty of seating. You'll hear 80's and 90's music from "back in the day" to enjoy with your meal. The hot dogs were juicy and flavorful, though slightly cool, not hot. That said, their hot dogs are good enough to eat without toppings, so that says a lot. The buns were soft and fresh. Plus, keeping to their Buffalo roots, they serve a sweet and flavorful Loganberry drink which is a must on every visit. Just don't spill it. It's likely to stain clothing.
