Teaism in DuPont Circle is a favorite. Get the gigantic chai in a mug if you're solo. They ladel it out of a magic, steaming pot. I also get the delicious hot sweet green tea matcha. If you're with a friend and have time for a traditional pot of tea, do that. There are 4 locations in DC at time of writing and I've only been to two but I, by far, love the charm of this DuPont Circle rowhouse setting. They have all-day breakfast here and I basically was amorphous weekly with a platter of their Cilantro Scrambled Eggs for a great deal of time when I worked nearby. They come with ginger, jalapeños and flatbread. You can choose between turkey bacon or chicken apple sausage. I always chose the tea-cured salmon after having scrambled eggs with salmon once in Alaska. My Go To Teaism meal - aside from breakfast - is the salmon bento box. It comes with broccoli and orange fennel vinaigrette, a potato medley with miso sauce and rice. The way this tea-cured salmon is seasoned and cooked is tender, moist and sweet. It is delightful. Love the lentil soup with cilantro. And the Udon Noodles soup with ginger in mushroom broth. At Teaism, they get the basics right. One note about getting a table in this tiny, bustling cafe: you don't place your belongings at a table and then come back with your food just to score a seat. Because it's so busy, you're thinking you should. A local will let you know - however - that in that time you are waiting for your food, other patrons will need that table. You wait to get your food before sitting, basically. The Salty Oat Cookies are take-home worthy for the fam, every time. And Teaism sells a combo 6-pack with the Chocolate Salty Oat cookie as well. I had a lovely mug of hot chai and a Hungarian teacake here on a chilly winter day. The portions were generous, the chai had a good spice profile and wasn't too sweet, and the teacake was lovely and indulgent and full of jam. This was my first time visiting, and it's definitely tight quarters - it felt like everyone was fighting for tables, and I saw some people sitting on the sidewalk outside with their trays even in the cold weather. I would say to plan to take your order to go or fight to stake out a table. I haven't tried any of the hot food, but I would be back for tea and baked goods; I really enjoyed both as a little afternoon pick-me-up. read more

It's impossible not to like this place, from the amazing Morocco mint to their world-famous salty oatmeal cookies, it's just a wonderful place. The only drawback you will find is the very limited seating, which can't be helped of course,, and the painfully small and limited bento boxes. The tea is amazing - morocco mint with the salty oatmeal cookies are to die for. Beyond that.. it's just a tea shop. The windows upstairs don't open anymore which is a HUGE tragedy and a HUGE let down, but I guess that's what we get in this low trust society. Once upon a time, you could sit upstairs and open the little windows and feel the nice breeze, but not anymore. Some people ruin it for everyone. I will say this: If you're not into the whole hip, Japanese tea shop experience, there are other places that are more comfortable and less hectic. Teaism I love you! It feels great to walk into a tea spot that not only values tea (great and artisan collection to visit for a unique tea fix) but everything that comes with it. The ambiance is amazing, there is great light coming in from the tall windows on the lower floor, and a good antique windows on the upper floor. The building itself has a visible worn in history that feels comforting and lived in. It's a great place to study because wifi is provided and the seating is comfortable. Great for a hang out and prolonged stay when the eating and drinking selection is so great, its really a place you can come and order something new every time you come. I highly encourage taking in small bites so you can revisit the menu in a new way every time you visit. The food is so good. Its an American-Japanese fusion that interprets food in a new and interesting way. Seasoned miso mayo, pan Asian flavors (Korean included), bento box presentation, and delicious Hungarian pastry is some of my favorite details that can be found on the menu. Main dishes are warm, comforting, filling, and varied! Do not skimp on their drinks there is such a wide variety that ranges to tangy fruity to creamy and complex, see a Yuzu Butterfly Tea to their custom blend of rich spicy Chai. The inside of the shop is so cute and has a nice selection of teas, coffee, matcha, etc to choose from. We sat outside to enjoy our sweet coconut milk matcha lattes and enjoyed the nice view of the home nearby with beautiful tulips planted outside. Picked up some food to go from teaism after work and loved it! The restaurant itself is small but we sat outside and enjoyed our meal. I ordered the thai chicken curry which was flavorful and delicious. My only note is I wish it came with more rice for the amount of curry sauce, but nonetheless it was still great. I tried their classic milk tea with boba which was refreshing. It is more mild and less sweet than most milk teas I have had in the past, but it was still good. The restaurant itself is a gorgeous and provides great indoor/outdoor seating. I was able to enjoy a Iced Darjeeling Tea on a Thursday afternoon in September and had a lovely time soaking in the sun with my refreshing drink. The tea was flavorful and paired well with the crystalized sugar I added in. The service was top notch with my cashier explaining all the types of tea they offered, its origin, and a bit of history on how it is brewed. So kind and welcoming! They have a downstairs area with a little pond that was very cute and peaceful. I wanted something light, so I ordered the matcha filled croissant with raspberry jam and a mango juice, but I also tasted the food my friends got. I am not the biggest fan of matcha, but the matcha cream was really tasty! It tasted less earthy and more like concentrated green tea (I love green tea). The raspberry jam was high quality and the flavors worked very well together. The croissant was good. The mango juice kickstarted a month-long mango juice craving for me because it tasted like liquid mango. The other food standouts for me would have to be the chicken curry and the french toast. The french toast especially; it was crispy on the outside and came with stewed apples. I wish I had gotten a slice for myself. If I am in the area I will absolutely come back. read more

There is some seating against the wall and more up a flight of stairs. I ordered okonomiyaki (cabbage pancake) with a fried egg and chicken sausage. My companions ordered another okonomiyaki pancake and the other ordered salmon ochazuke- Japanese rice & tea soup made with Hojicha green tea. My pancake was as large as the plate, but warm and crisp and the cabbage was tender, with flavorful sauces on top. I did not like the sausage. My friend loved the ochazuke - the salmon was perfect and the hot tea was the wonderful flavoring. There is a great tea selection- although I chose a boba - which was only one flavor - black tea although I did enjoy the chewy boba. I also would like to try the oat cookies they are well known for -- next time I guess. We enjoyed the food very much. I did not like the setup at all where you have to ascend steep stairs holding your heavy food-laden tray to the upper level of seating. This location has upstairs and outdoor seating due to limited seating on the first floor. We ordered two (2) Iced Hibiscus type drinks and a Pancake style appetizer Breakfast Okonomiyaki). For the price and quality of drinks, they are hard to beat with a drink being $4. After eating you can leave your plates on the table for the staff to clear. I will come back here but this review is based on the mango lassi with boba that I purchased. It was lacking in the mango and lassi portions as well as the boba. My expectation was that the lassi would be thicker but it came out like a smoothie without all the ice blended up. It also didn't have a tartness that one would expect of something that is made with yogurt. It seemed like only 1-2 teaspoons of yogurt were used in combination with a mango bubble tea powder. It didn't seem as though any real fruit was actually used. There was also a scant amount of boba in the bottom of the cup. I know most mango lassis don't come with boba but I thought I'd try it anyway. Other than this drink, the restaurant has a lot of vegetarian options for food and a very large tea menu for the tea connoisseurs out there. Parking is a headache but that's DC for ya. I did like that they have seating upstairs and outdoor seating as well if you want to relax with a cup of tea or some bites to eat without being near the main level's grill and cash register. read more

I really want to like this place, cuz it's so cute and so close to the DuPont Circle metro station! And plus i love the concept. I came here with some coworkers on a cold day, so I got their chicken udon. My coworkers got their salmon & chicken bento boxes. My udon--one star. The taste of mushroom was way too overpowering, i couldn't taste anything in the soup because of the mushrooms! The chicken pieces were tender, but that's really about it. The udon was definitely overcooked and treading into the mushy category. My coworkers enjoyed their bento boxes and commented that the sweet potato was a nice touch. Their meat (chicken and salmon) were a bit bland, but well cooked. I also had their creme brulee, which was quite yummy. Hence the 3 stars instead of one. The wait was very long when we were there for lunch, and they don't provide you with spoons (for the soup and creme brulee) unless you ask specifically for it. I ordered the dream salad not expecting too much, but was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was--the citrus dressing went so well with creamy beet hummus and the crunchy nuts. And their vegan cheeseburger is great if you want something hearty and comforting. For a quick bite, the ginger scones are tasty too, perfectly crumbly and not too sweet. I had an amazing first experience at Teaism! One thing I REALLY appreciated was how each of their menu items had a visual to go with the written description. This really helped me figure out what I wanted / what I would be getting. The staff was also super patient and kind with any questions I had. I ordered their beef brisk sandwich broccoli, and my friend had their curry and broccoli tots. I thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich: the brisket was so tender, the ciabatta was fresh and perfectly toasted, and the coleslaw had a fun coconutty twist to it! I really liked the sweetness it added to the sandwich and will definitely be coming back to get it again. The regular side of broccoli was good, but the tots were definitely the better side. I couldn't end my meal without dessert, so I ordered their creme brulee and chocolate oat cookie. Both desserts were solid but nothing you have~~ to get. read more

I came here on a Friday night around 6:30pm, just enough time to enjoy some tea with a lovely group of people before closing time. When I first arrived, there were not too many seats. But thankfully, a table opened up for the 4 of us after ordering. I love the selection of teas, and the 16oz pot is an amazing price. We all got tisanes (caffeine free teas) for about $4 per pot after tax and tip! I can only speak for myself, but the spearmint tea I got was brewed to perfection! You can tell they really steep the leaves at the right temperature (as someone who has burnt tea leaves and over-steeped my tea, I can tell when a tea shop does it right!) Highly recommend it cold if it were a summer day -- super refreshing! There's a small bathroom right next to the kitchen downstairs and an upstairs area with more seating. They had some fancy Japanese chocolates by the front that I purchased as Christmas gifts ($12 a pop if I recall correctly, but with flavors like dark chocolate and strawberry, matcha, miso-almond). I stopped by one day after dinner, and the inside was really quite charming. Felt like I was in some random hole in the wall, only to later find out that they have a couple location across DC. Still a really charming location! I got a milk tea with boba, and it was great. It had a really strong tea flavor, with a perfect balance of creamy milk. The pearls were maybe a bit softer than I would like, but still surprisingly good. Definitely on the sweeter side, and I don't think they offer sweetness adjustments (?), so I would very much treat it as a dessert, rather than a refreshing drink or snack. Still, was yummy! I also saw they had some special for a tea cake, so I got one of those as well. Also super sweet, but overall good crumb and was yummy too. The sweet potatoes have this sweet glaze sauce that was so addicting so good. The rice was so-so . Kinda mushy...but it's very difficult to cook good brown rice. The broccoli was tasty. I enjoyed my limeade very much! Very cooling during a hot summer afternoon. The seating is so lovely with umbrellas outside. There is limited seating in the front (a few seats). There are some seats upstairs too, but I think you have to bring your food upstairs yourself? I'm not sure. After a few days of eating out, my sister and I wanted a slightly healthier option so we went to Teaism, an Asian-inspired teahouse, for lunch. We got in the short line, placed our order, and then took our stuff upstairs. The dining space consists of the outdoor area, the counter with a few seats on the first floor, and the upstairs area. This is not the teahouse where you can zone out and relax at. It is a small space, and we could hear the conversations of the people around us. The tea list is extensive, and the food is made from scratch. My sister got one of the floral teas, and I got bubble tea. We shared the Korean beef brisket bento box and the okonomiyaki with shrimp. The tea is high-quality. The bubble tea is okay, which is good enough since this is not a bubble tea shop. The food had a homemade feel to it. The beef brisket was flavorful. The okonomiyaki was crispy. The food did not wow, but it was good. Teaism is a decent option for a quick and healthier meal, but it is a bit pricey. My sister was full, but I was not. Maybe I have a big appetite, but I think the food portions are on the smaller size. I would get their tea again, but I would rather go somewhere else for lunch next time. read more

Back again at Dupont Cir. to see Picasso's Blue Period at the Phillips. But after riding in on the MARC from Baltimore, Mom and I felt the need for a slight bite at the Teaism at the Circle. We decided on a hot Moroccan Mint Tea and an iced Matcha Tea. We both got the delicious egg and slaw sammies on fabulous soft bread; one with turkey bacon, one with chicken apple sausage. Yum! The bread was puffy good and we realized we could've shared--but we ate it all! There are other more lunchy items, as well. Although there is cozy, distanced seating with a cool view upstairs, besides some former bench seating on the lawn, there're several banked out tables shielded on the street. One of my favorite spots near Dupont for work or coffee chats. They serve a great variety of good quality teas and delicious food. As an oatmeal raisin lover, I have to try the salty oats cookie. It's delicious, the right amount of sweet and salty, just slightly more crumbly and drier than the decadent Levains that I'm used to. This location is not very big but feels cozy and homey.
