This was the best dining experience we've had after 3 weeks of trying local restaurants (we are new to the area). The patio is open for walk-ins so we were able to decide to go last-minute. Our waitress knew the menu and was super attentive. It makes a *huge* difference when the staff expresses excitement about your order; small touches like this are what elevated this dining experience above the rest. Started with the tinto rose (refreshing, bright, dry with a hint of sweetness) and one of the specials, an heirloom tomato stuffed with other tomatoes and buttermilk. Cool presentation where they smother it in delicious basil sauce at the table. This dish was beautiful! We probably should have ordered some bread to soak up the sauce. We then tried the bucatini all'Amatriciana and the carbonara. Both pastas were homemade, perfect texture, and great flavor. Limoncello cheesecake was a great way to end the meal. Not too sweet, great flavor. The amaretti crust was really unique, loved the sweet almond flavor and still felt light. Overall, one of the few places we've been locally that clearly cares about the quality of food and service, and it shows. read more

We went to tavola for the first time for Valentine's Day and the service, food, and atmosphere were excellent. The little lighted alleyway to the back was so cute. We were lucky enough to nab a seat by the window (extra romantic!). I loved the low lighting but warm interior - it made it feel super cozy. And I loved how the lights reflected off the window (did I mention enough times how I love window seats?) We really enjoyed our prix fixe menu (which I normally don't!)! We added the wine pairings and it went so well with all our food! Our waiter was super friendly, knew the menu well, and made excellent recommendations. Everything was delicious - from the apps to dessert! Needless to say, we will definitely be back! read more

Truly truly stunning Italian in Charlottesville!! We didn't have a reservation (but I do recommend one), so we walked in to their bar which serves the whole menu and had a wonderful time. The ambiance was so nice, and the crowd was fun! We got the burrata crostini, Bucatini (vegetarian), eggplant parm, and tiramisu. We were STUFFED but we were so content! The service was amazing - I accidentally ordered the bruschetta without asking if it was vegetarian (and it wasn't) so I apologized profusely and the waiter recommended the burrata and didn't even charge us for the bruschetta when they had every right to!! The pasta is freshly made, the tiramisu was some of the best we've had in a long time, and the eggplant parm and crostini were so well balanced and yummy. Wow, the seared scallops over a beet risotto at tavola is one of the best meals that I've had in awhile. The scallops were cooked perfectly and had a very pleasant crust and sprinkling of salt on top. The beet risotto was rich and savory and the fresh herbs were a nice touch. The capellini frutti di mare "fra diavolo" pasta dish was very much on par. I loved the spicy chili oil that was drizzled on top - it brought out the flavors! The pieces of seafood were large and the thin pasta noodles went well with the sauce even though I don't usually prefer thinner pasta. All in all it was an incredible meal, from the food to the service and the ambience. I'll try one of their pasta dishes next time! I think this place may be a little over rated. The service was impeccable. The place itself is very nice and the amenities are clean. I like that they have a little bar in the back where you can have drinks and get small plates while you wait for your place. The food was okay. The bread tasted like regular grocery store French bread. The carpaccio was a little too chewy but, was seasoned well. The carbonara was okay, I've had better in SF and NYC. Had a reservation for a 50th bday party, they lost the reservation. Instead of making it right they were extremely rude and treated us horribly. I guess it is a huge privilege to eat here. To witness so much initial admiration and excitement for this restaurant become so quickly perverted and twisted by the disrespect and hostility we encountered that night is so disheartening. I came here for dinner for the first time with friends for a holiday reunion after hearing so many fond memories of their previous dinner experience at Tavola. We arrived promptly at 5pm for dinner service and were welcomed with enthusiasm and pleasantries and started our meal off well with cocktails and appetizers. Our waiter was kind enough to also ensure our order was tree nut free due to my allergy. Unfortunately, this is where any kindness or understanding ended. We did not receive our entrees until after 2 hours of waiting. We did not receive a proper explanation or apology. We did not receive an ounce of respect when trying to voice our complaints to both our waiter, Dallas, and the owner Michael. Instead we were met with jarring hostility by both Dallas and Michael. Dallas was dismissive of my friends complaints, taking our upset as personal attacks on his character when we were only just trying to hear a clear explanation. Michael refused to properly listen or attempt to understand our perspectives, and instead chose to talk over us and ignore the issue at hand, saying things like "but at least you have your food now" and didn't even introduce themself as the owner until we had to ask several times for them to even give us a name. Defending their actions and service style is fine but there was no reason to ever diminish or ignore our perspectives. We were offered weak excuses for slow service: first that our ticket was last to be fired even though we were one of the first parties in the restaurant, second they claimed they needed to wait for our appetizers to be cleared before firing our entrees when we were clearly done and waiting, having even stacked our dishes to help with the process of clearing them away. We could clearly see several tables who arrived later than us, including a party of 8+, getting served their whole meal, paying and leaving as we continued to wait. All we wanted was a genuine apology and acknowledgment of why we were upset and to see them take ownership and responsibility of the miscommunication rather than be talked down to and offered free dessert as if we were children. Whatever miscommunication that occurred either in the kitchen or about how they run their service could have been clarified and should have been acknowledged immediately rather than dancing around the issue. Only now after a day of our complaints on yelp did Michael acknowledge it to be an "internal miscommunication". To be talked to in such a demeaning and offensive manner shocked us considering how well the night had started. Both Dallas and Michael claimed their years of experience in the industry to justify their behavior and actions. I am sure the staff at Tavola work hard at their craft, as we all do in our respective fields, and I understand the hardships and stress of working in the industry as a former barista, but to me it seems they still need several decades more experience if this is how they chose to "professionally" handle our situation. No amount of success nor experience nor age nor ethnicity should ever excuse someone from simple human decency. We deserved better. I hope they learn from this and understand that even if they did not intend it, their behavior and the manner by which Michael and Dallas chose to handle situation placed some of the only minorities in the room in what felt like a hostile and alienating environment, one where we did not feel safe nor comfortable. Tavola clearly has an unfortunate and almost decade long history of prejudice it has failed to acknowledge or address in its service to POC. Please see reviews by yelpers of color like Jing L. Way too much pepper, the pork was undercooked and the flavor was just off. Pro tip: no reservations, but the back room bar has excellent cocktails and our wait was not long at all. they also have sacks if you are starving and need something to munch on. Would have been nice to start the tab at the bar and have it transfer over to the main room, but it was not terribly inconvenient to close out. The inquisition cocktail was excellent and just the right combo of strength and sweetness. Our meal started off with bread and olive oil and the carpaccio. Both were solid, but nothing terribly crazy. I ordered the fra diavola pasta dish and was slightly underwhelmed by the sauce. There was a good seafood ratio, but I felt like the flavor was missing the kick I was expecting. My dinner date got the carbonara, and I think that dish was superior to the fra diavola. The service was truly excellent. Attentive and kind, I have nothing but great things to say - thank you for hosting us so well. Had such a wonderful evening at Tavola on Friday. Reservations are needed in advance, and for good reason because the food is amazing. We started off with the "Sundown" and the seasonal bourbon cocktail, both of which were wonderful, and the burrata appetizer. The burrata, accompanied by delicious pesto and sun dried tomatoes, was so fresh and was some of the best we've had. We both got the bucatini as our main, which was a very reasonable portion and was fantastic. I was a little nervous for the spice level due to the chili oil, but it was actually perfect with just a lot of flavor and the tiniest hint of heat. Decided to treat myself to a dinner here and did not disappoint! I got the gnocchi as my entrée and it was absolutely incredible. The flavors were strong and the texture was so pillowy and delicious! My waiter was great with helping me decide on a glass of wine and even gave me little bits to sample before deciding on a glass. I sat at the Chefs bar and it was great for a solo dinner and pretty cool to get to see the flow of the kitchen and the prep of plates. I ended with their tiramisu and of course, it was delicious. A reservation is a must during COVID-19 since dinner times are at 5PM, 7PM or 9PM on Friday & Saturday's. We made a reservation in advance via email and confirmed it when they called the day of. They wrote my last name down wrong so my reservation was questioned when we arrived. I was told that they were going to assume it was me after a few minutes of waiting with no apology for the mishap so my dining experience did not start off well. I started off with a cocktail, the veni vedi vici and it was great. For food my husband and I split a few menu items, the burrata, insalata verde, pappardelle bolognese, linguine alla carbonara and tiramisu. It was all fantastic, dessert is definitely a must order. Perfect spot for a lovely date night! The ambiance is trendy but not stuffy, the drink selection is great, and the housemade pasta is delicious - what more could you ask for when looking for a nice Italian dinner? Be prepared for a long wait (we came at 5:45 and waited for an hour - luckily shorter than the expected 1.5 hour for a party of 2), but it is definitely worth it for freshly made pasta and tasty sauces. There is a bar in the back where you can start with pre-dinner drinks and small plates while you wait for your table, and once you are seated for dinner, the food comes out very quickly. At the bar, we started with wine, bread with artisanal olive oil, and the gamberi (lightly fried and seasoned shrimp with a delicious salty and creamy sauce with capers). For dinner, we had the pappardelle ragu (probably the best red sauce with very tender meat I've had in town) and the capellini gamberi (not as good as the ragu but still tasty and light if you're in the mood for seafood and lemon). We ended with the cannoli special and affogato with salted caramel gelato. Overall, though it is pricey, it is definitely worth stopping by at least once for a nice night out and is definitely on my list of great date night spots in Cville! read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I don't usually review places but this was such a poor experience. First of all, my friends and I came in for dinner celebrating our friend getting married. It was a full house in there, very loud. The manager over to us and told us to be quiet, specifically the only POC women in our party was told to quiet down. I personally didn't notice a difference in volume once our party completely shut down after that out of being uncomfortable to be too loud. We waited an hour+ for our food and never even got to sit and eat it, we had to get it to go. I personally got food poisoning from my dish, I got the gnocchi. For the prices and the auto 20% tip I'd expect much better organization and treatment as paying customers. Sometimes food borne illness is unavoidable but it still added to the poor experience. I would not recommend for larger parties or anyone celebrating. Maybe a first date. read more

I do not recommend Tavola. My husband and I ate here last week and found the servers to be unprofessional. My dinner came out and it was over peppered, in my opinion. When the waitress checked on us, I said it was spicy for me and asked for a side of bread. I then watched as the waitress walked to the computer at the bar, which was directly in my line of sight, and told 2 other staff that "she said it was too spicy". The second person she told was looking right at me when she said it, and he responded "too spicy? it's just pepper!" Yes, I could read their lips as they were facing in my direction as they had the conversation. I am sure these conversations happen all the time at restaurants, but it was quite unprofessional to do so in direct line of the table, not to mention with a bar full of patrons. I did not complain, nor did I send it back. I simply asked for bread, which is a menu item. I was quite disappointed when we left the restaurant. It got excellent reviews and I had been looking forward to it. Unfortunately we also found it quite loud and difficult to have a conversation. Went here for a birthday celebration dinner, the pasta was pretty good! A little overpriced if I'm being honest, but overall pretty decent. This is one of our favorite places in Charlottesville usually. The staff is usually very nice and well trained. The atmosphere is warm and bustling. And, the food, our favorite part, is usually perfect. This time, the staff and the ambiance were great still but the food was lacking. The mussels used to come to the table, sizzling and freshly prepared. This time, they were borderline room temp. Bread served with it wasn't warm and toasty but just sliced. My bolognese was not the usual bolognese but just a few large chunks of pork and the serving was 1/3 smaller than usual. Tavola is a great spot for your next date night! Though it is pretty small and they don't take reservations, they have an adorable bar in the back where you can hang out and wait for your table. Their bar program is solid-- cocktail presentation is on point and I really like their gimlet. Their gin & tonic is super unique so proceed with caution. We ended up sending it back because it was too weird. As with seemingly every good restaurant in Cville, tequila cocktails don't make it on the menu which always breaks my heart. One of our favorite dishes we have tried there is the burrata. You can't go wrong with grilled bread and cheese! I've tried a few different pastas and though they were pretty good, I haven't been wowed yet. I was surprised to learn they don't make many pastas in house. We did really enjoy the pork cutlet dish. The sauce was yummy and the pork was pounded thin and crispy. Highly recommend. Sadly, desserts aren't anything to write home about. We have had exceptional service here both times we visited, though, so that does set it apart from other restaurants in Cville. The ambiance at Tavola is really what makes it special. We have been here twice. The first time had their fall special, it was vegetarian but I wanted to try their special. I did not want a substitution but wanted to add shrimp, which they declined, stating it was vegetarian and they could not add grilled shrimp which honestly irritates me. I'm not asking for a change in the recipe, just some grilled protein. It's so pretentious. It also was insanely salty and blew out my palate and wasn't enjoyable. Others with us did generally enjoy their food but definitely was not their best night. We returned 6 months later and thankfully had a much better experience. We had the mussels which were good (but not amazing), the caprese was worth a reorder (despite hating $18 for a barata, it as I tally was really good and well plated and enjoyed the pesto), the calamari was good (nice shareable and standard but enjoyable). I had the pasta with peas (again vegetarian - I took it for what it was), it was good, but the best ever but was good. My husband got the gnocchi which was superior and delicious and the other two I. Our party got the carbonara and everyone was very happy. I still felt that the food is over salted, but in general it is a nice restaurant and experience, especially for what's available in Charlottesville, so will likely be again. read more

Came here for a birthday meal. It's in Belmont so parking is always a challenge and we often course came on a very rainy night. It's a popular restaurant so it is definitely on the noisier side. We were off a bit in the corner which did help this a lot. Our server was wonderful. Very attentive service. My only complaint sadly was the food. Went for a weeknight dinner with a partner. I'd say it's OK PLUS rating. Nothing special, splotchy service, I had my wine, partner had to wait 15 minutes for the cocktail. Hmmmm. Appetisers less than inspiring- unflavoured mussels which were totally dried out. Fried artichokes- no discerning flavour except maybe dusting of salt. Goat cheese sauce was very yoghurty and watery. Wreckfish for main dish was good but the the serving size on a tiny side and I'm not an ogre. Prepared well though. Stuffed zucchini blossom (only 1!!!???) was done with pesto like stuffing that did not hold up too well. I would have incorporated some of that lovely rice into it. We made a reservation (which I highly recommend) and arrived to a line waiting for the restaurant to open. Noah was our waiter and expressed great customer service throughout our meal. First time in Charlottesville and tavola was the first recommendation I received from multiple people so obviously had to try it. SO happy I did it is probably one of my favorite restaurants in all of C-ville!! The mussels are a definitely must as an appetizer - order extra bread because the sauce is amazing and you'll want to eat every bit of it! Best bolognaise/ragu I've ever had! And the tiramisu was amazing for dessert. I have been here a few other times and every time it does not disappoint! Finally got to try Tavola with my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary. They open at 5 and you can't make reservations so we decided to try and go right at 5. Glad we did - there were already a few people waiting to get in! Definitely recommend trying this method if you're going on a Saturday night. Not very large inside but we loved the exposed kitchen and intimate atmosphere. It wasn't too terribly loud for us. The bottle of wine we were going to order was sold out but our waiter gave us a great recommendation for a different one which was awesome! We appreciated the extra service. I love a beef carpaccio so I started with that and my husband ordered the pancetta wrapped shrimp. So tasty! He ordered the pappardelle bolognese after seeing all the positive reviews here and I tasted it and holy cow - it's delicious. I got the capellini gamberi which was also incredible. We split an order of scallops which was good, pasta was pretty filling but we couldn't do an entree each after that. Overall it was an excellent meal and we will definitely be back! read more

When we ordered this the waitress asked if we still wanted the bread and oil since we ordered the appetizer but of course I wanted it figuring it was included in our meal. After getting the check I see they charged us $3 for it. This did not make me happy. I know, I know its 3 bucks, but it's the point that the waitress should have said that rather than implying it was included with our meal... Had I known it costed extra I wouldnt have gotten it, considering I just ordered a $15 appetizer. The burrata was good. I loved the pesto. I would have perfected to have fresh tomato instead of sundried. Anyway moving on... the parpadelle ragu was really good. I loved the flavors of the meat and the pasta was cooked perfectly. The two of us shared it and it was the perfect size. I will say, it took quite a while for the food to come out but the staff seems to just be standing around. The kitchen is completely exposed so you can see what's happening and while we waited for our food, there was no activity happening back there. I dont know if they have another kitchen somewhere but customers perceptions are important so I suggest you dont have your employees standing around talking and on their phones while people are wondering where their food is. read more

Quite busy & we had no reservations, so sat at the bar, which worked out perfectly as we could watch with great interest the bartending talents of the skilled staff making so many creative & exotic concoctions. Big props for the brown butter bourbon cocktail. What an amazing experience! This restaurant was a treat. It's been on my list to try and I was excited to finally be able to go. After leaving my friend and I got in the car and talked about how great of an experience it was. The atmosphere is intimate and has a local small restaurant feel. Which is a great selling point for me. And would make a great spot for a girls night out or fun date night. It is a small restaurant that has a small dim eating area and bar in the back as well as a space in front with a bar along there kitchen. It fills up fas, especially the window seats in the front of the restaurant. Due to the fact that it is a small space it can get fairly loud so if you would like a more intimate dining experience. Attire is anything from dark jeans and a nice shirt to business casual. Also side note they seems like a great place to dine alone. They have seats at the bar in the front and the back which both would be a great place to casually dine alone without feeling rushed. The service is five star worthy. Clearly they are not only properly staffed but they chose the right people. Any time our glasses got close to half way someone would walk by and fill it up. Between each course they brought us new flatware and made sure we had whatever we needed before it was needed. We never felt like we had to wait for anything but at the same time didn't feel they intruded on the meal. Our server made sure to stop by when we stopped digging into our meal but not as though they were rushing us out. Also, she boxed up our meal and told us she would keep it to the side for us due to the small tables. It was impressive that she would keep it to the side as well as be able to keep it straight with a full restaurant! It was the cherry on top of an amazing dinner. The food was phenomenal. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the pasta tastes as though they are hand makes the dough (which they probably are) and each course brought it's fair share of flavor. The sauce I had on my pasta was spiced to perfection. Our pasta noodles melted in our mouths. Our dessert was fantastic. The limoncello gelato was a great treat to balance out the acidic tomato flavors. Overall, an amazing dining experience. Incredible Italian food. Ambiance is cozy and intimate - no rezzys, so come earlier or prepare to wait! Luckily, you can snag seats in the bar area and sip on a variety of beers, wines, or cocktails as well as get some appetizers to get you ready. I love the carciofo: artichokes, goat cheese, garlic. Main menu - you really can't go wrong. Pastas are my favorite and honestly a really amazing representation of how good the restaurant is overall for me. I love the pappardelle bolognese - their pasta is house made! I'm telling you, the stuff comes out piping hot and just stays hot and fresh the entire time. The beef and pork sauce is savory and not too over seasoned, but really brings out the quality of the meat. I was stuffed after eating this. Next on my list is to try their desserts! read more
