Located on the Downtown Mall. Great elevated bar food for dinner. Check out the steak frites, perfectly med rare 8oz NY strip with bearnaise butter and great hand cut fries. The thick cut pork chop is also excellent. Its big, brined and pan roasted, served with some rosemary. Fitzroy as a small, but excellent drinks selection. If you like G&Ts, I recommend the house tonic with Hendrick's and muddled citrus. Prices are reasonable given the quality and location. Service was excellent. Apps: Reservations via Resy. Online ordering via Toast.

Loved this place! Right on the mall in downtown Charlottesville. The black and white floors and low lighting gave intimate vibes yet it wasn't too loud. The cocktail list was extensive. My salmon was good- the mashed sweet potatoes were delicious and there was a generous portion of broccolini. The staff was awesome- knowledgeable, professional. Truly made it a great dining experience.

Stopped here before a show at the Jefferson Theater - no wait and we were sat at a nice booth. The staff were really friendly and helpful - we love a waitress who makes you feel great about what you ordered! I had the Pear Mule which was delicious but really sweet and my husband ordered the old fashioned which was also well made. For dinner, I had the black kale Caesar salad with shrimp and it was amazing. The shrimp were seasoned really well and the salad was fresh. My husband ordered the steak & frites...the steak was good but I felt like it needed a little more flavor. Plenty of seating available, several beer options and tvs - great spot to watch a game or to grab a quick bite before a show next door.

I had high hopes for this restaurant to surpass the reviews. It was a nice restaurant with a good ambiance and great service that unfortunately did not follow through with the food. The appetizer, Short Rib Rolls, and drinks were the best part of the meal. I would recommend that appetizer and the Pear Mule. We got the Short Rib sandwich, side of Brussels, salmon, and a side of kale Caesar salad. The short rib sandwich was underwhelming and could've benefited from toasted bread and an aioli but the sweet potato fries that came with it were good. The side of Brussels was unfortunate. It had good flavor but was severely overdone leaving them quite mushy. The salmon was dry and very fishy and the sides to it were bland. The kale Caesar came without kale but had a nice lemon Caesar dressing. I would recommend this place for the drinks as the Pear Mule was very tasty and the bartender was friendly. They have quick service and are open until 2am. We were disappointed with the poor food outcome but if that improved could see this place being a highly recommended spot.

It was a rainy football Sunday so outdoor seating wasn't an option. However, the Fitzroy was a nice introduction to downtown Charlottesville. We arrived right around happy hour time. The games started so the place began to fill up right before our eyes. For quick service on a late Sunday afternoon during your favorite football game, the Fitzroy is the place to go. You'll get your food within minutes. The menu is American eats so be prepared to order everything from hummus to start to grilled romaine salad and a good sized portion of steak with seasoned fries. They don't skimp on portions. Arrive hungry.

Friendly usher and server, comfortable setting and moderate noise level. We had house salad (surprisingly good and looked more like a fancier salad), fried chicken (just OK), sweet potato fries (good if you like sweet potatoes), and mac and cheese (good!). Nothing amazing but nothing bad.

Oh. My. God. We were walking around downtown and decided to grab a bite here and it was far beyond worth it. The food and mocktails were so delicious and came quickly. My friend and I couldn't choose what to eat so we split the burrata, fig and goat cheese salad, and spicy rigatoni--all were phenomenal. The interior was super cute and our server Sean was very kind and attentive.

Definitely a popular place, I recommend making a reservation. Good for groups with a large hi top in the middle. Large bar area. Dinner was good, tried the shrimp pasta, broccolini & mozzarella sandwich, and side salad. The best part was the spicy ranch on the salad, it was def fresh. The pasta was excellent too, although had tails on, as a personal preference I prefer not having to remove the tails myself while I'm eating out. Broccolini & mozzarella sandwich was ok, a little too oily (and that's saying a lot because I love butter & oil...) so the bread lost its crispiness, the cheese was only on one side (maybe it slipped/melted over but would have liked enough to cover the entire sandwich). Great cocktails. Overall a really nice dinner experience.

The decor was beautiful and combined with the high ceilings gave a very historic feel. It was relatively busy, but very loud. We didn't mind the volume but a group of four older people kept complaining, so if you're looking for a more quiet environment this wasn't it on a Friday night. Our service was okay, but our waiter was distracted by a large group of drunken bachelorettes who kept yelling his name, so it wasn't entirely his fault. Everyone was very friendly and other staff kept checking in with us as well. Apparently there is a new food menu that is just a few days old. The waiter offered some recs, which we didn't get. The poutine was not great. Mainly fries with very little cheese curds and came with a small container of gravy that didn't cover the fries nearly enough. Fries were a little dry, so more gravy would have been wonderful. It basically was like eating a side of fries and I wouldn't recommend ordering this. The steak frites were cooked to a perfect medium rare with a very delicious herbed butter that flavored the meat perfectly. I would highly recommend the steak, although still the fries could be done better overall. I didn't get a cocktail this time, but they had a great menu with a lot of different creative options that would be great for going out to get drinks. I was just visiting, but had a good experience overall and would recommend! Will stop by again in the future!

While walking the area looking for a decent cocktail bar, I specifically sought The Fitzroy out, as I heard from friends about it and thought what I heard was positive, so I wanted to try it. When I got there, around 5:30PM or so, they were about 1/3 full, so not busy at all and I got a decent seat at the bar. The bartender was quick to give me a menu and take my order, but wasn't interactive at all; in fact, the only time I saw him was when he gave me my drink and then to cash me out after I drank it. They had an interesting menu and I probably would've gotten a snack, if he was around to ask. To be fair, he was the only bartender, but again, they weren't busy. The place looks really nice inside, historic, like everything else in this area. The vibe was energetic for the crowd that was in there and the front was open to the outside seating, which looked great too. I wasn't very impressed overall, even though my drink was good, it wasn't very welcoming and I reached out to the friend who had been here previously and asked why they recommended this place and they reminded me that they didn't and they experienced the exact same vibe and issue (and these are industry folks). So, I can't say I'll be back... seems to be a management issue. In fact, I hit a few places on the Downtown Mall over a couple of days and they all were cold, bland and not very good with the customer service. Stick to Main St, so many great places and much better service up there!

We were promptly seated when we entered The Fitzroy at 2:30 and we were given a menu. I was not expecting much when I went in The Fitzroy for my first time. I was expecting less when I looked at their limited lunch menu of chicken wings, pretzel, chicken sandwich, burger, vegetarian sandwich, or a Caesar salad. Leaving did cross my mind more than once as I considered the six basic choices for lunch. Then as I looked around I could painly see I was in a bar and not a restaurant. They had two long bars and one row of booths and tables. I decided on a bar burger, which for whatever reason, they called their Fitzroy Burger. According to their menu description, it was just a regular cheeseburger on a brioche bun. We order a pretzel for an appetizer. It came with a sharp cheddar cheese sauce and mustard dip. The pretzel wasn't anything special. It had a good warm taste but I prefer more salt on my pretzel than this one had on arrival. Our main orders of burgers and wings were served to us as soon as possible. The brioche bun on my Fitzroy Burger had been steamed and was still warm. The hamburger was surprisingly delicious, and so were the fries that came with it. One of our burgers was on ciabatta bread. The ciabatta bread was warm and fresh, and without an upcharge. The side Caesar salad was also tasty. Our waitress was very effiecient and she continued to check on us and refill our water glasses. This was an unexpected pleasant lunch experience for me and the others at my table. I am looking forward to returning for another lunch time experience, when I am in need of a bar burger and fries. I did notice a change in their kitchen staff at 3pm. Maybe this was their shift change time for their kitchen staff.

Stopped in to The Fitzroy for a pre-dinner cocktail and appetizer yesterday. Purely just based on seeing one cocktail on the outdoor menu that I really wanted to try. I got the Chamomile apricot sour. It's made with chamomile infused Tito's, which I was so excited to try. But unfortunately it was VERY sweet probably from too much apricot and I couldn't taste the chamomile from the overpowering sweetness. Next time I'll have to ask for light apricot & I would recommend others do the same if you like a less sweet drink. My boyfriend got the House old fashioned. I thought it was smooth and easy to drink and really enjoyed the different flavor from the malted barley syrup. It gives it a bit of difference compared to a typical old fashioned. We also got the Fig bruschetta. I was a little disappointed. It was honestly just goat cheese with a tiny bit of fig and a sprinkle of crispy prosciutto and chopped basil. So I can't really say the bruschetta name doesn't really work here. Also like every appetizer ever, you needed more bread. The flavor was good, but lots of leftover goat cheese due to bread shortage. Love the ambiance and style of the white marble bar top with the mixture of white subway tile, red brick, teal walls and black accents. It just goes together perfectly with the black leather seats and booths. It's a vibe. I spoke to some locals after and they were surprised we stopped in for a pre-dinner drink because to them Fitzroy is a late night going out bar. LOL I will definitely be bringing friends here.

Went to the Fitzroy and the service was good. We sat at the bar because there was no seating at the time. It was about the middle of the day and they didn't take too long. I liked the food, not a big fan of the avocado, but I did enjoy the rest and loved the eggs.

We had 5:30pm reservations and were seated immediately. The host was warm, acknowledged the occasion, and honored my request for a quieter table by placing us in a bay-window nook. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The space echoed so badly we could barely hear each other, and the setting sun combined with the AC being accidentally turned off made the area feel like a sauna. Our water glasses were filled within minutes, so we thought service would be smooth. Instead, we sat for another 15 minutes before anyone greeted us--while a table seated after us was helped promptly and served at a noticeably faster pace. I understand large parties require attention (there was a group of 10-12 nearby), but as a former server myself, I've never allowed smaller tables to feel forgotten. When our server, Lucian (sp?), finally arrived, we immediately placed drink and appetizer orders because we were already starving. The appetizers came out about 20 minutes later--still before our drinks. The brussels sprouts were excellent and worth the wait. The biscuit basket was good, though the butter-to-biscuit ratio felt off, and the apple butter was surprisingly delicious. Our entrées didn't arrive until at least 45 minutes after that. The pacing was simply poor, and we consistently felt like an afterthought. While our server was polite, he didn't initiate conversation, offer suggestions, mention happy hour, or acknowledge our daughter's birthday. He didn't even suggest dessert. Meanwhile, the six-top behind us--seated well after we were--was wrapping up their meal as ours was just being served. The food presentation was beautiful. The pot roast, however, was underwhelming. It lacked seasoning and sauce, and the vegetables were forgettable--very few potatoes, no carrots. "Not your normal pot roast" was accurate, but not in a good way. The shrimp and grits were excellent, with great seasoning and a flavorful sauce. The salmon was moist and well-prepared, though it still had a few scales on the end of the filet. Once we finished eating, we again waited for our server to return. We eventually had to wave him down for boxes and again to request the check. Parking in the back was convenient early in the evening, though I imagine it becomes difficult later. Would we return? Unfortunately, probably not. We've been treated better, served more efficiently, and appreciated more fully at other restaurants--including one almost directly across the street. What we hoped would be a memorable celebration ended up feeling ho-hum at a high price--too high for the experience we received.

They neither responded to my email nor the review with any sort of explanation or apology which suggests that they don't really care. So I'll share this on Yelp too so others are aware of their poor customer service. We visited this restaurant with a group of seven and were excited to try it, especially because the outdoor seating area looked like a great spot for dinner. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being very disappointing. Service was extremely slow and disorganized from the start. About 15 minutes after ordering, a different waitress brought food to our table that we hadn't ordered, then quickly took it away without much explanation. From there, things only got worse. Our meals came out slowly over the course of 30-45 minutes, just one or two plates at a time, with no communication about the delays. Our four-year-old waited nearly 45 minutes for a simple order of fish sticks. Even basic service was lacking. We had to ask multiple times for something as simple as an apple juice refill, and it still took far too long to arrive. Toward the end of the meal, our waitress stopped checking on our table altogether, which made it difficult to order dessert. The food itself was pretty good, which is the only reason this isn't a one-star review. However, the poor service and lack of attentiveness completely overshadowed the experience. Overall, it was frustrating and disappointing, and we don't plan to return.

Between us, we did 3 cocktails, 2 apps, 2 entrees and 2 desserts and the bill came to about $220 tax and tip included. The restaurant had their main door closed (maybe they always do?) so we entered through a narrow back alley entrance into their bar. Parking is kinda tough. We did arrive a few mins early to our reservation and watched a table of 2 and 4 get seated before us which was a bit frustrating (it seemed like the host knew them and maybe they were given preference). Additionally, despite the reservation saying it was for my partners birthday it was not mentioned while we were being sat or by our server during our meal. Other restaurants in town (particularly Orzo and C&O) are really good about noticing these reservation notes and ensuring they are acknowledged. Both restaurants have also provided complimentary dessert or champagne and so it was a bit of a bummer it seemed to not be noticed at all. The ambiance was also much louder than we expected. Unfortunately we got sat next to 4 very drunk rowdy women which can't be helped but we could hardly hear each other over how loud the room was. The vibe was more of a nice dinner out with friends than romantic intimate dinner we hoped for. The music was upbeat and funky. Not a bad thing just maybe a misfit for what we were hoping for this evening. I haven't been here before so it might have been nicer to be sat in a quieter corner since it was just the two of us (not sure if that would have been possible). Our server Ginger was nice. She did provide a list of special for the evening which we ordered a few of. Food wise, tavola, in my opinion, certainly beats mockingbird or the local which are its two neighboring restaurants I've been to. It's actually not even a close comparison the food is significantly better imo. For starters we had the fried artichoke in aioli. Delicious - 5/5. Only problem was there wasn't more of it! The bread was from alb baking co and was served with olive oil. It was fine. Not the best bread or oil I've had. For drinks we had the alpine air (gin, pear, lemon, rosemary I think) and some pear cocktail (pear simple, Tito's, maybe pear liqueur?). My partner had an espresso martini with dessert. All cocktails were 5/5. Very good. For entrees we had the duck rotini and the pork special with collard greens and potatos au gratin. The rotini duck was interesting. I liked the flavor profile of duck, cocoa (in the pasta), pickled chiles and mushroom. I did feel like the flavor combination was so rich I wish they would have been a little more bold with the cocoa flavor. To be honest, it got lost and was completely overpowered by the mushroom flavor in the sauce. The sauce itself felt more of like a butter and fell a bit flat. The duck was chopped into small pieces and I just felt like the execution of this dish didn't do the ingredients justice. I wish they had done a braised duck breast in maybe a cocoa-orange sauce as I thought the cocoa duck combination was quite smart. I felt like the pasta version of these flavors just fell a bit flat and ended up feeling a bit bland as the mushroom was the only prominent note. Overall, I'd give this a 3/5. Neither of us were wowed by it but I think the flavors are ambitious and interesting. The pork on the other hand was fabulous. The pork was cooked perfectly in what felt like a wine reduction and was incredibly tender, no knife needed. The potatoes au gratin were a tad on the underdone side and had a bit more bite than maybe I expected but the flavor with the caramelized onion on top was fabulous. The collard greens are some of the best I've ever had. I love collard greens and am quite picky and these were amazing. I wanted a whole plate of them. 5/5. We ordered Brussels and pancetta on the side and this was also a 5/5. Very good. For dessert we had the tiramisu and the cheese plate. The tiramisu, frankly, was a 2/5. The lady fingers were totally soaking and the dessert was actually just a wet blob. The texture was just not good. The cheese plate was fine, 3/5. It was served with grilled crostini, cherries and candied walnuts. The cheeses themselves were a soft maybe goat cheese, what felt like pepper jack, and then two hard cheeses similar to Parmesan. None of them were particularly flavorful or compelling. I wish the plate had been served with some sort of jelly or sweet spread to accompany the cheeses as I felt the bread nut cheese combo was a bit too dry. Overall, I would say the main foods we had were very good and I think next time we may try their more traditional italian pastas like the carbonara or the bucatini. Overall I think the food here is very good and we would be back.
