I suggest not to go there on Saturday night ! We order hamburger, and steak with Humus. The hamburger had no spices, ( funny that the restaurant name is Tavlin, which means spices in Hebrew ) and tasted like old meat that sat in frig over Shabat. My wife could not eat the so called "steak" because it was very chewy and even the Humus was not good and seem old... We go to restaurants often, this place is among the worst 3 I ever encounter ! Take a star back for take out. Food they have for dine in are not on the take out menu and you can't order it. But if you dine in and order it you could wrap it up to go if you do not finish it. Food is great but do not understand while take out menu is different from dine in. Still recommend 100%, I went to Europe cafe and grill was able to order anything on their menu for take out. I held a small event at Tavlin and I was really pleased with how it came together. The manager was very low key and made the whole process really easy and the staff was very accommodating in terms of making sure we all our guests were taken care of. The food was also out of this world. All dishes were served family style, though vegetarian and vegan dishes were served for those who requested. I have been dreaming about their hummus. One day, I'll swim in a huge vat of their hummus. And, I was blown out of the water by their desserts. The BEST pareve ice cream I've ever had!!! read more

Take out review during Covid times. Friendly server, nice seating area, well socially distanced setup. Wide selection of menu. Tried the vegi falafel wrap and shawarma wrap. According to server shawarma meat was chicken and turkey meat [which is great] and yes the meat looked like white meat. Reason for 4-star is something was missing in both the wrap in terms of flavor. Made reservations to this restaurant last Sunday for dinner. Decided on this place because of their vegetarian/vegan options. Upon arrival, the restaurant was only half empty even though reservation app indicated a limited choice of available dining times. My party was seated immediately and orders were taken promptly afterwards. The complementary pita bread and pickled veg were fresh and delicious. My party of five ordered the falafel platter, crispy cauliflower, and combo platter for starter. Appetizers were all tasty. Falafels were a bit dry but accompanied well with the tahini sauce. The crispy cauliflower dish was tasty but seemed a little small for $16. Our main courses were okay. The Power burger was cooked well but lacked taste. The same goes for the Beef Kabobs for lack of spice. The best part of the dish were the fries; hot and crispy. Hummus falafel bowl was also good and tasty. Overall the dining experience was only mediocre. Majority of our main dishes were bland and nothing worth talking about. The restaurant seemed slightly overpriced for the food they serve. Tavlin is a wonderful Israeli restaurant in Tenafly. We have been going there for years. The hummus is probably the best in Bergen County. Amazing shwarma, falafel, kabob, cigars, kibbeh, etc etc. All of the details are great too: the pickled vegetables and pita that come out first are always super fresh. On Saturday nights they have a band playing classics. And last night I had a rib eye steak that was divine. I usually get their hummus bowls which are incredible as well. I can see why some people have described the service to be "elitest" - the managers/owners act like they are above you - they didn't even acknowledge us coming in when the restaurant was empty and only had one other customer. The waiters/bus staff are very kind, but that doesn't make up for the strange feeling you get as you walk in as if you aren't welcome. I went today to pick up lunch for a meeting and even though I said I wanted the shishkebob platter from the lunch menu they charged me the amount from the "To Go" menu which is TWICE as much. I tried asking what the difference is but he kept interrupting me and just saying "do you want me to cancel it?" He got so nasty I waited outside until they finished my order. They were 12 minutes late in finishing it and when I asked why it was taking so long, the answer was "they had to finish the french fries". I ordered 45 minutes before, and the french fries weren't ready? The food may be OK but if the owner is going to continue to treat his paying customers badly it is simply a place I cannot recommend to anyone and I refuse to return. read more

Delivery was quick and food was well packaged. Did not like the shwarma. The meat tastes under cooked which made me nervous after eating it. Excellent Kosher restaurant with inventive menu. Lots of choices whether you are a carnivore, pescatarian or even a vegetarian or vegan. I had the really homemade chicken soup-- served with some chicken and no noodles; it was excellent. I generally don't order chicken soup because it's usually 1/2 noodles, so this was a pleasant surprise. Big fan of this place. My family - 10 people - ware visiting from Germany, we went for dinner and everyone was praising how good the food was. Large portions and great value. Service was also very professional. Recommend in particular the Pargiyot Chicken, its gourmet deliciousness. read more

The moment we walked through the door the hostess had a look that projected a feeling of "oh no, another person I have to deal with." She was our main server, and she didn't smile once, wasn't at all welcoming to our large group, frankly, she shouldn't have cared less, or made us feel any less wanted. After the food was served nobody ever came back to the table to offer water or to see if the food was up to expectations. The next time we saw an employee was when the bus boy came to collect dishes at the end of the meal. The food was greasy, mushy and bland. Went here for lunch, for the first time, earlier in the week. And, obviously it was very good. Was it 5-stars good? Maybe not quite 5-stars, but definitely 4-stars plus, and given the smattering of absurd (as in for absurd reasons) 1-star and 2-star reviews, I'm more than happy to balance the rating scales just a bit. I'll start by saying that the freshness of the food was great, and refreshing to experience. Next, I'll note that the flavor and flavor combinations were very thoughtful and very good. And, I'll point out that while the service wasn't perfect, it was far from as painted in the aforementioned negative reviews. In fact, I'd characterize the service as "friendly enough" and a-okay. As for my specific meal, I thoroughly enjoyed the: - table pickles (great crunch and great tang) - pita bread (great texture; much better than typical pita) - bean soup (nice balance and texture, although I definitely had to add salt and pepper to compensate for the very faint flavors) - hummus with sautéed spinach, onions, pickles, and falafel (all truly excellent) - chopped salad (like an Israeli salad, but with mixed greens, and way too many of them at that) I'd definitely return and I'd recommend without hesitation. I went to this place with my boyfriend, two cousins and their wives/husbands. I wanted to like the place because of its cute location good reviews. Unfortunately I was disappointed. Firstly on Saturday nights they have a band play that the restaurant does not pay. Instead they ask the patrons to pay the band at $5 per person. They do this in two ways. Firstly when you're seated there is a flyer on the table informing you that there is this charge. Additionally when the band takes a break a member will come over, inform you about the policy and ask you to pay by putting money in their jar. I'm sorry but I didn't go there knowing I'd have to pay an extra $10 (for my boyfriend and I ) all because the restaurant won't pay their entertainment. Secondly my food wasn't anything special at all. Their hummus appetizer was very tasty but my chicken and couscous was something I could have easily made at home and had it taste the same. My boyfriend got a "burger" which was basically a burger patty inside a pita. Because this is a Kosher place they won't mix any dairy with and meat so there was no option of a cheese burger. For my bland chicken and my boyfriends pita burger (along with 2 split appetizers among 6 people) my bill came out to $60. A bit pricey if you ask me. Third, it was COLD in there. I wound up wearing my jacket the entire meal. That did not add anything enjoyable to my experience. All in all it wasn't the worst experience I've ever had but I won't be going back. Had high hopes here. I am from the restaurant business and I came with my Israeli partners. All the food was sub par. Our hummus was salty but we got another one which was decent. All the lunch specials were small, bland or not well executed. Fries were cold, pita was stale, etc. Not trying to be malicious and I really hope the owner can take this criticism as honest feedback from a fellow restauranteur. Up your game with basic food prep and presentation skills. Execute well and you will grow your business. On a positive note our server was excellent. Patient, nice and accommodating.
