Exploring Clayton with my sister. We chose lunch!. Cozy place with smiling attentive staff. Our waitress Nicole was efficient, knowledgeable, and attentive without being intrusive. Jeff was Johnny on the spot, kept water glass filled, made great summer cocktails--Jeff you Rock! Welcoming atmosphere in a small space with large vibes. Lets get to the food. Appetizers ordered were 3 Meatballs and Mango Jalapeno Wings. Delightful to say the least. I chose Uncle Joey and my sister chose the Blackened Chicken Wrap which were awesome and very flavorful. All food was complimented by the awesome Summer Cocktails. We tried the Tropical Splash-- I just needed one really;-)--for now. All in all a very successful foray. We'll be back soon. read more

Randomly happened upon this restaurant a couple of years ago and have been constantly happy with coming to visit ever since. The parking situation is interesting, there are a few spots behind/besides the building, curb parking in front, and then a dirt area that it doesn't look like you can park in, but people do. The food is consistently good. I've had their salads, sandwiches, pizza and a few dinner specials. They also usually have several seasonal cocktails. Inside, you seat yourself and someone greets you quickly. Outside, I think they want you to make contact with a server first, and then sit down. Everyone I've encountered here has been very nice and service is quick. I make a point to stop in when in the area. read more

We just moved to Clayton & my Bff told me about this place so I had to check it out. I'm originally from Jersey but I've been in Raleigh for 18 years. It's hard to find good bread, sandwiches & pizza but she said tavern 42 is legit. My hubby and two grandson visited last night. It was busy but we were greeting right away and was told it would be about 15 min. We wait 10 min & a tables ready. We order the sausage sandwich the filet mignon sandwich, the chicken wrap and the fried shrimp basket. Everything was delicious. The bread was like back home in Jersey. I heard the owner is from Jersey and ship their bread here. The shrimp were huge and very fresh. Wow even the fries and sides were awesome. Fresh potato salad and cold slaw. The sandwiches are a nice size. We all only ate half our meals. Then we find out that music bingo was starting in 15 min so we stayed. We had a great time. My husband and I won. My grandkids had a blast. Being 16 and 8 they are hard to keep amused. They stayed off their phones and we played three games. The Dj is from LI NY. She played really good music !!! Definitely a great night. I'm ordering pizza from there tonight and I'll give an honest review on the pizza. I'm a big pizza snob so I can't wait to try a few different pies. One of the local favorites in the area. Everything was good but nothing really stood out as great. My Italian sandwich had good ingredients, but the portion felt a bit skimpy. I had a side salad that felt pretty standard--I was just going through the motions eating it. The service was good, and the decor is unmemorable. Overall, it was a decent experience, just nothing I'd go out of my way for. Worth trying if you're in the area, but not a must-visit. read more

We've been here before and dined-in (on the patio) and enjoyed it. Unfortunately I don't believe the same effort (?) is applied to phone in orders. Requests for extra cheese and extra pepperoni on the pizza as well as the mussels being in a spicy sauce were ignored. Nothing to split hairs over unless one factors in the lack of delivery options. Physically retrieving the food isn't anything I will do again as the quality missed the mark for takeout. read more

I love this place! I've never had a bad meal here and the waitstaff are awesome! The blackened chicken wrap with a scoop of their homemade potato salad is beyond reproach. Just amazing! And they have my favorite beer "Hell Yes Ma'am'" on tap?! I'm happy. read more

Sun 3:30p: Order the usual when we do takeout at Tavern 42. Asked for "floppy chips", waitress says "oh you mean when their slightly undercooked?" and i confirmed. Sun 3:50p: Wife returns home with food for family. No obvious issues with anyone elses order, but my "floppy chips" instead are potato slices that sat in a fryer just long enough to become grease sponges. The Salmon BLT wrap looks through and through like its been sitting in the same grease, so much so i cant even tell if the salmon is undercooked or its the grease. Sun 3:55p: After trying to quick fix by tossing the chips in a fryer and removing the grease saturated lettuce, i decide to call down to get it replaced. I only live 5 minutes away and have done many takeout and dinein orders, taken out of town guests here, never had any problems so at most this should be just a short trip for my order to be replaced... youd think. On the phone after explaing the issue she puts me on the phone with the manager. I explain the same thing to him. He tells me ok "let me call the owner and ill call you back". to maybe the less savvy theyd just go along but to me i went "???" because of the giant red flag standing in front of me. i explain to him how to handle the situation, "ill be there in 15 minutes, so use that time to start the order and call the manager and ill be there in 15 min". i dropped one F-bomb over the dog food they tried to serve me and who the owner doesnt trust her employees to make right. mainly out of frustration that was exacerbated by the fact that her staff probably did understand the problem but werent empowered to just make it right. Sun 4:10p: I arrive with receipt, food order, and wifes card in hand. i notice one unusual thing. call it another red flag. there are signs ALL OVER the place saying "BE KIND OR LEAVE". gotcha. i know the code here. its a virtue signaling zone. they must have had some unkind customers come thru. keep my cool. Im seen right away and indicate i called down for my order to be replaced. (at this point im still not quite believing what the store mgr has told me). The manager then comes over and he says "ok and you said you want to swap out with the blackened chicken sandwich?" and i say yes then he says "ok let me call the owner and get her ok" and i said "you should have done that already, just refund the whole $38 order." i should add that he lets me know everytime he has to call the owner he has to wait for the owner to call back. i quietly ask "do you think everyone here would be happy to know it could take yall up to 30 minutes to even be able to decide if you can make an order right?" about the refund, the mgr says "yes but i have to call again for the refund". i ask isnt there a mgrs override? he says "the owner is probably watching everything right now on camera". then the owner calls and apparently wants to talk to me. i say "well hello CEO-in-chief", amazed that this much of the business structure is involved in a $38 messed up order. she defends the transaction by blaming me for ordering chips undercooked. the same chips her waitress communicated she understood, the same chips they made me tens of times, the same chips that never made me question the food safety of my order. Sun 4:15p: im issued the full refund and the staff informs me the owner has asked me not to return. i say "sure thing, thanks" and leave. This is bittersweet for me cause even tho im moving to a nearby town i still wouldve driven here occasionally and continued to host visitors and date nights, or maybe even just to get my paws on some of them tasty chips... but they dont want to be special anymore. they have signs all over their restaurant that indicate something's happening over at Tavern 42 to cause an unkindness epidemic. since i dont see these signs anywhere else, is it really that your clients became less kind? or maybe its the owner.... if this is how they want to run their business, all theyll be is a glorified dive bar. dont expect much more. read more

A must try if you're in the area!! One of my all-time favorites. Great bar food and drinks at amazing prices. The inside is quite small, so it can get busy and packed quickly especially after 5. There are plenty of parking options, but the adjacent lot is small then there's a dirt lot right across from the restaurant as well. The size of the restaurant is my only complaint. I live right across the street so I just do to-go, but have gone during the week for lunch a few times when it wasn't too busy. They have a full bar with a lot of beer and liquor options as well as a few wine options. The servers are all friendly and helpful. Definitely a small-town family feel when you go. Now to the important part...the food. AMAZING. Everything is good here and there's an assortment of options. I've had so many different things on the menu and I have always been pleased. The prices are also great for the quality and quantity you get. Some of my favorite dishes include: Mango Jalapeno Wings Pizza Subs Stuffed Mushroom (stuffed with crab and shrimp) Mussels Homemade chips Shrimp in Garlic Salmon BLT Wrap Stromboli Also, they have great specials every weekend that start on Thursday evenings and go Friday and Saturday evening. So far, I haven't seen them repeat any of their specials so if you see one you'd like to try you'd better just jump in and try it. Great place for lunch/dinner. I've been going there for a few years, and always had a great meal. Large portions and always fresh. Very crowded at dinner, so I usually go for lunch. Buried deep in the heart of Clayton is this little bustling tavern, and I do mean LITTLE, tavern 42. It's clearly been here a while, you will see what I mean when you stop in, the driveway and parking lot may leave little room for parking, but there is always the street parking near the dead end roundabout. Like I said it is buried deep in the heart of Clayton. There seems to be quite a bit of seating outside, but it seems the outside seating reflects the inside seating on a busy night, FULL. So if your a party of four or more, be prepared to wait, this place seems to be a popular stop for large families, and from what I can tell, they tend to make an evening out of it. There are plenty of appetizers to choose from and they are not stingy with the garlic, I like the fact the cheese bread is prepared much like the pizza and comes with plenty of sauce to dip. The pizza surprised me, it's not a typical tasteless bar pizza heated up and delivered to the table. They clearly use a unique blend of cheeses, I suspect there may even be some Gruyère Cheese in there somewhere, but regardless of the combination I found it quite impressive. My request of extra cheese and extra sauce was definitely the right choice. I've been eating lunch here for years, but they have now lost a good customer. Stopped by 12/7/24 for a late lunch with my wife. We were told to sit where we would like to and the waitress came by a minute later with menus and silverware. She asked us about drinks took the order and that was the last time we saw her. We waited for 7 minutes and watched as she had a conversation with the bartender moved on from there to talking with a customer at the bar. I tried to get her attention but just gave up and left after she went to a table that came in 5 minutes after us with their drinks. She looked at us as we stood up to leave and never said a word. If you didn't want me as a customer just send someone else over. If she worked for me she would be fired. The customer helps pay your salary not the bartender whom you would rather spend your time with. read more

A good place must be shared when discovered. One of my coworkers who lives nearby informed me about this one. The interior is small and can get very crowded. Seating is also available outside, however it can get fairly crowded outside, much like inside. The parking is OK but I'm not a huge fan. On the menu, there is a decent variety of items. Nevertheless, everything I ordered was fantastic. A full bar with a wide variety of beer and liquor selections is also available. Everything was fairly affordable in terms of cost. If you want to enjoy a refreshing drink and some delicious food, I suggest trying it. read more

Recently moved to Flowers and my family and I love that this area has so many different food choices. We were looking for new places to try and I came across Tavern 42, which had good Yelp reviews. I was skeptical at first, because the reviews said the place was very small. We happen to arrive at 4pm on a Friday and we were able to find a booth inside. There are about 4 booths and the rest tables, maybe 10 total. The menu was extensive with many choices, drink options too. I ordered the Big Daddy Burger (single) and the shrimp basket as an appetizer. THIS BURGER WAS DELICIOUS. It was super juicy, crispy bacon and decorative with some melted Swiss cheese and mushrooms. My fiancé had the Big Daddy (double). My daughter had "honey bbq" wings, which came with 8 wings. The wings were big and tasty. My youngest had shrimp Alfredo, which was great also but the sauce was a little thick (still with great flavor). I definitely will be back here for some food and drinks!!! I would like to say this place is awful so it wouldn't be so busy whenever we went but... everything we have ever eaten here is absolutely scrumptious. They have really great food and rotate inventive specials to keep things lively. Love their Moms special pizza, Buffalo sliders, steak sandwiches, BLTs.and homemade chips. We saw the Irish specials online and decided to make a takeout order, since the inside dining is unavailable at this time. They must've been busy because it took a bit to get through when the phone wasnt busy, but definitely worth it! We love supporting small businesses especially in this time of need. The employee was so nice and friendly and she had the order ready to go when my husband picked up! We ordered 2 of the corn beef taco entree with french fries as the side.
