A meal at Taste is a culinary adventure as well as a fun experience. Everyone is competent and welcoming, and the menu selections are creative and yummy. But the most striking feature of Taste Kitchen, is that the service is gracious and solicitous. When we ordered martinis, we found ourselves in a vermouth tasting, courtesy of the bartender, which was a lovely touch. The staff is genuinely having a good time, and making sure the guests are, as well. If you need something any waitstaff will float around to help you. It's as comfy as the home of an old friend. Amazing. Most of the restaurants were fast food or casual when walking around Ann Arbor but I found Taste Kitchen on yelp and figured it was worth a try. Among the things we tried were the salmon sashimi, which were nice thick slices and didn't taste fishy at all, butter squash soup which was a great tasting warm appetizer, and I got the seafood bouillabaisse. There was scallops, shrimp, salmon and mussels in a Thai broth. This had a little spice to it but was so good especially since it was cold out. Wish we would've tried the dessert since it looked amazing but I guess we will have to come back to do so. This is fancy and very nice on the inside with friendly waiters to match. Definitely give it a try if you're looking for something a little fancier while in Ann Arbor. read more

If I don't have anything nice to say I don't say it- but taste kitchen was too much of a disaster for me to bite my tongue. Within the first fifteen minutes our waitress knocked over a full glass of water onto my boyfriend who had to sit with a wet lap for the whole meal. We brushed it off because accidents happen, but things only went downhill from there. Almost an hour into our dining experience we were finally asked what we would like for our main course (odd because the restaurant was half empty) and when those dishes eventually arrived they were both undercooked to the point of concern. When our waitress brought back the properly cooked dishes, we had no silverware to eat with because that had also been taken away and overlooked. We had a few bites of the sub par duck before we asked for the check. No apologies or compensations were offered. Cherry on top- even the pen to sign the check didn't work. This is the best restaurant in Ann Arbor. We shared plates to try everything and got the shrimp risotto, tuna sashimi, fish tacos, and mussels. They were all amazing except the plates are small so you do have to order a lot. So worth it though and the service was great too. I'm a big foodie and have gone to lots of places in AA but was blown away by this place. Highly recommend to anyone that's in the area read more

2015-02-07 Saturday night at 7:00 PM We were a party of six and had reservations. We were immediately seated. The place was hopping so I would definitely recommend making reservations, especially if you have a large part. I ordered the soup of the day, which turned out to be squash soup. I really enjoyed the chunks of squash that was in the soup and since it was a little on the sweet side for me I had the server add several grinds of pepper. Delicious! Then I had the vegan's shepherd's pie. It was PIPING hot and filling. I actually ended up sharing half of it with Gerry...but partly because Gerry's 48-HOUR SOUS VIDE SHORT RIB which came with potato cake and Brussels sprouts was on the small side (i.e., big in flavor but small in quantity). I was disappointed when the server brought back two small, paper thin sliced pieces of bread when I asked her for some to sop up the yummy Shepherd's pie gravy (at the prices we were paying there was no way I was going to leave any delicious crumbs behind). My expectation was that she would bring some delicious crusty home made bread. So, the food was very tasty, the service was excellent but it was definitely expensive. I do not believe we would go back for dinner again simply because there are just too may other excellent restaurants in Ann Arbor where you can get the same quality of food and service for a whole lot less money. Amazing! Went here with my family and we had a blast. The sommeliers were very experienced and knew exactly what to pair with everything we ordered. We had the spring rolls and caprese for starters; all delicious! I had the risotto and scallops, the risotto was cooked perfectly and the flavor was spot on. The scallops were perfect with the curry sauce. Great service and great food. For dessert we had the creme brûlée and a coconut dish (forgetting its name currently). Both were excellent. This might be my new favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor! The cocktails were delicious (and a bit strong, just ask my mother-in-law), atmosphere is trendy, and pretty much all their dishes blew my mind. We came here on a busy Sunday night (around holidays) and made reservations a few weeks in advance. We were greeted by the host and promptly shown to our table. We ordered cocktails and all enjoyed their signature drinks. We shared several of of their cold/hot starters as well as the mains, giving us the chance to TASTE much of what was on the menu. Highlights included the grilled berkshire pork, chilean sea bass, duck tacos, cheese plate (with the fig compote, mmmm), and the lamb shank. The tuna poke was good, but we found the avocado overpowered the fish just a tad...not even close to enough to knock off a star. Slow clap for Taste Kitchen! We had dinner here last night. The food and service were top notch. Very creative and flavorful food thoughtfully presented. Beautifully decorated space. Fair prices. They played very nice jazz music that did not over power our conversation--especially appreciated in a town in which restaurants often blast loud techno music even during the dinner hour. We were told they will have their liquor/wine license in 3 weeks which will be a nice complement for the great food. We were very pleased to see a new restaurant enter the generally mediocre Ann Arbor fine dining scene with such a great effort right out of the gate. This a must go to restaurant. The food quality is very good, the service is exceptional and the location can't be better, but they lose a star due to value (I'll explain). I gave them 4 stars because with 2 people (each with an entree and 2 drinks), I walked out hungry and $150 poorer. I happened to get the most expensive thing on the menu, the lamb chops. Although very tasty, the dish had 3 very very small chops. It looked pathetic being served - especially with a $33 price tag. The scallop ceviche was good; but it's 1 seafood scallop cut it in 1/4's and charged $14... I realize fine dining isn't known for large portions, but you still have to complete it with value. I did see somebody order the pork with egg and that looked good and of value. Parking garage right across the street, the Michigan Theater right next door and although I didn't sit outside, they have it. read more

The superb food deserves 5 stars for consistent excellence in every dish. Perfectly seared tuna. Perfectly cooked scallops. Perfectly dressed beet salad. Beautiful presentation and flavors. But on this night Taste was "punching below its weight." A place that aspires to this price point needs to do better than a 90 minute wait from seating to entree. Or a stingy pour on a $19 *glass* of wine. Or details like sad, not-fresh flowers on the table. And for larger parties note you'll pay a mandatory 20% gratuity even if the service warrants otherwise. When we first stepped in with our two year old child, the male bar tender from distance gave us a dirty look. It's definitely not a family friendly place. We ordered three dish, the grill shrimp was good and fresh. My husband ordered the plank salmon was not fully cooked with A big chunk of beet underneath. It's not appealing at all.If we wanted raw fish we would go to a Japanese restaurant and order some sashimi. My order was Cornish hen with some type of rice, no taste inside the meat. The rice was very hard too. During the dinner, the bar tender was walking around talking to the table around us. The one in front of us and the one behind of us, he just walked pass us without any acknowledgement. Very rude, gave us the impression that we shouldn't come here with kids even our daughter was very well behaved.We always had fine dinning, this was by far the worst. Was here on a week night and cannot imagine how it might be on the weekends. The food was amazingly good ! Had the Seafood Curry and my husband had the Shaking Beef. Both meals were well prepared and presented. Was pricey but worth it. A bit loud because of the crowd. I would have given it five stars but the waiter disappeared when we were trying to leave and it was a bother to get his attention. I would not have minded given all the other great stuff about this place, but we had an event to go to. I really want desert next time (and yes, there will definitely be a next time). read more

Phenomenal new restaurant in Ann Arbor. Romantic, grown up ambiance with the freshest seafood you can find anywhere. Creatively prepared food from Chef Danny, who is truly an artist. We shared tender scallops with a delicate risotto (dairy free), Swiss chard and thai curry, along with a hearty seafood bouillabaisse with a gentle kick to it. Incredibly delicious. A light and terrific coconut pana cotta completed our meal. The service was friendly, knowledgeable and nearly impeccable. We had a wonderful experience at Taste Kitchen--and it was on one of the busiest days of the year for Ann Arbor--graduation evening. We had a party of 8 and every one of us loved our meal. The service was outstanding--starting with Chene's custom made cocktails and outstanding service, and all the way through the delicious trio of sorbet. The salads were outstanding and so were the entrees. We tried the scallops, cauliflower, halibut, spring rolls (the fresh variety), and pork. This was our first visit to Taste Kitchen and we decided that this will be our new go-to place for happy hour! The food was exceptional: crispy Vietnamese spring rolls (authentic taste), mussels that were so delicious we almost ordered another round, fish tacos and a lovely earthy mushroom risotto. The bartender made fabulous cocktails, gave great advice on wine, and we finished off the evening with a yummy coconut panna cotta. We ordered some cocktails (and old-fashioned and a sidecar) which were fabulous! We are food snobs and were very satisfied with the appetizers and the small plates. A very thin and over cooked filet was presented along with chicken strips which was called chicken schnitzel on the menu. Reminded me a bad wedding reception meal. Very disappointing! Three stars for technique if I ignore the value question. The restaurant deserves extra points for the thoughtful wine list and the knowledge of the servers about it. I'm not sure how two dollar signs in the price category on yelp can be accurate when a two course meal with one glass of wine cost me nearly $80 with tax and tip. I know many places in Rome, Paris, London or New York where I can have the same two courses of the same or better quality with a comparable glass of wine at two thirds the cost. Enough about cost, let's talk about the food. The ingredients are top quality. Although I'm aware of the farm to table/local sourcing/carbon tax etc. trends, I don't consider them in choosing or evaluating restaurants. The owners of Taste Kitchen are into the trend and I'm neutral about it on a meal by meal basis. I had duck breast. It was well prepared and I appreciated the very judicious use of salt. The quince garnish and squash side were flavorful and seasonal. I felt the Hudson Valley duck itself was not flavorful enough to compensate for the natural intensity of the side dishes and the very light seasoning. The chef appears to be interested in French cuisine so he would do well to consider the importance of flavor balance that characterizes it. My octopus starter was the highlight of the meal. The interplay of texture and the chef's signature light hand with seasoning worked much better with the delicate seafood. I would have preferred somewhat more generous garnishes. I plan to return and get a more in depth feel for the restaurant's concept. I wonder if I will still feel the wine list is more interesting than the menu items. read more

Came here last night for the first time. Sat at the bar and shared several plates. The bartender (forget her name, but she was a very cool and very pretty blonde) was very knowledgeable about the food. We tried the mussels, duck rillettes, black bass, and dessert. The mussels were the best I've had. The black bass was perfect. As knowledgeable about the food as she was, her mixology skills were even better. She made me An amazing Old Fashioned and two amazing Manhattans. The only downside was the prices. But no buyer's remorse here, the food, drinks, and experience was well worth it. They don't change anything on the table, so you will basically use whatever previous table used, such as table cloth, tablemat... which may be common for many restaurants, but not making me feeling good...
