It took me years to finally try this place due to once a week, only two hours opening window. It was worth it! Realized how much pastries taste so much better when they were still warm. Cannot even remember when was the last time I had warm croissant. It was so buttery, soft & flaky. Orange Cardamom Kouign Amann. Very different than any other kouign Amann. There is not much crispy caramelization on top. Still warm with flaky layers covered with/orange peel & cardamom. What a great combo! Cinnamon bun was not typical cinnabon style buns that would be covered with icing which was even better. Loved the quality of dark chocolate in Pain Au Chocolates as well Don't know when I can make it to that two hours pick up time frame on Saturday, but if you can preorder and try them! read more

Open for only two hours per week on Saturday morning, Tasso is difficult to get, but it's worth it. The plain croissant is super buttery and flaky; this might be the best croissant in Toronto right now. Other items are very good as well, including an unusual Kouign Amann that is a very light and crispy pinwheel, and a dense, soft (no icing) cinnamon bun. You should pre-order on the website. read more

You will not find the name in the store front, but just follow the line and fresh pastry aroma. The store is very small and only fit 3 customers. It usually opens at 8:30AM from Friday to Sunday and closes when everything sold out. It happened it opened late today due to hydro interruption problem, so I was still able to grab the pastries. It was 40 minutes after the store opened, the person in front of me grabbed the last chausson au pommes. I was able to get the last ham and cheese. Truly the best French pasties in town. It is flaky and crispy outside and very soft and chewy inside. I wish they open for more days and produce more. Love to go back but you have to be there early. read more

It's been a long time since I last had their croissants as their preorder sells out very fast each week! I was lucky enough to be able to order last week for pick up on Saturday! Their pick up time frame is between 10:30am to 12:00pm. Unfortunately, I was running behind, but they were nice enough to call me and advised they will be there until 12:30pm which made it possible for me to pick up my order. I really appreciate they went out of their way to call me. I was so happy to pick up my order and they smelled very delicious in my car on my way home! The croissant was buttery and you can see the many layers when you bite into it. The Kouign Amann was extremely delicious also! It's rolled up in many thin layers. Definitely something I'd order again! read more

Been looking to give this coffee shop/bakery a try for the longest time but never got around to being available for their limited opening hours. Was finally able to visit on a Sunday morning. As I walked down parliament street looking for the storefront, all I could smell from a block away was buttery goodness. As I got closer, the smell got stronger. This was a great sign. When I finally got to the door, it's now obvious why I smelt this from a block away as their door was pried opened. Shop was small and cozy (more of a order your coffee and pastries for to go, no seats). The shop owner was extremely friendly. Being overwhelmed by the display, I decided to take a shot in the dark and order one of everything as I'm not sure when the stars will line up for me again to drop by this place. Ran home as fast as I could and while doing that, the overwhelming butter smell just leaked through the small holes of the box. All the pastries were flakey and were stimulating my olfactory sense like no other. Words simply cannot describe how delicious these pastries were. Almost felt bad that I didn't order 2x of everything. Will be trying harder to get here in a weekly basis. read more

I came here as part of Indie Coffee Passport 2013. I am not that familiar with this area and didn't know what to expect. The setup is simple and there is very little seating. They apparently make most of their baked goods in house which is a plus. I ordered a Cappuccino and my friend ordered a latte. In addition we ordered a bostock (I haven't tried this dessert before) The bostock and latte were both decent. Here is the verdict on the cappuccino. Espresso: Mild Crema': Decent Milk: Frothedwell with nice microfoam. Latte Art: Good 3 star for the capp as I prefer a stronger espresso taste. read more

Best croissants and pastries I have ever had! We got one of everything, the croissant, pain au chocolate, cinnamon bun and a kouign amann. The kouign amann was my favorite, so buttery and light, crispy. I can not wait to have another one, I think about it all the time! The line starts early and they sell out quickly. read more

Love the pastries here. So flakey, buttery, and flavourful. The only thing is, it is pretty oily so those of you that don't really do oil, beware! Americano is strong! They accept credit card. Dat crunch. Dat flake. No words can describe the buttery goodness of a TASSO croissant. I've been meaning to come here for a while but they have limited hours from "8:30am until sold out" on Friday to Sunday. The bakery is on the west side of Parliament just north of Winchester. There's no obvious signage but you may be able to identify it based on the lineup out the door. Inside, it's just a counter. There's no seating available. There's also coffee and some other baked goods available which I didn't try. As someone in line said, "Everyone is here for their weekend crack." After the first bite I can see why. read more

This is now my favourite place in the city for croissant by far! I am NOT an early bird, I like sleeping in embarrassingly late past noon on the weekends. But Tasso is only open 8am-11am (and often sell out before 11)... and so I drag myself out of bed early as hell so I can make it in time to get a big bag of delicious pastry! The croissant is just perfect...crunchy outer layers, super buttery and soft inside. So damn good. They have great lattes as well, I prefer them over Jet Fuel BY FAR. The owners are an amazing husband and wife who start baking at absurd hours and make everything themselves. So glad I discovered Tasso! read more

Tasso Bakery - Perfection! - Bakeries Near Me - Toronto, Ontario

Stopped in at 8;50 am this morning. My coworker swears by the croissants. I got 2 regular croissants and 1 pain au chocolate. They seemed a bit burnt which is fine as I like things a bit burned/charred. The croissants were very flaky but also a bit chewy. To me Delysees on King St, now closed, has THE best croissants in the city. Very light and flaky. I would say Tasso comes 2nd. I would definitely go back and try their other offerings. read more

You can smell the freshness, taste the experience, and feel the technique with every bite. I have profound respect for the amazing and delicious croissants and pastries Tasso serves up. It must be a labour of love, or perhaps madness, to specialize in such a time consuming and small batch venture. I don't write a lot of reviews these days, but I wanted to put the word out that these are most certainly the best flaky pastries in Cabbagetown, and I'm sure they could compete with the best in the city. --update 9 months later This place got busy. Line ups around the building every day before they open, and most of the best things sold out within 30 mins. A friend recommended this place which bakes in small batches. I bought Salted Caramel Croissant, Canele and Almond flavored Tart. I liked these items in the same order. I have told anyone who would listen about this place. So much so that I probably deserve a commission. The hours they keep is fascinating to me but as long as they can afford to stay open, I fully support it. What a great small spot in Cabbagetown. There really aren't a lot of nice coffee spots in between the Don Valley Parkway and Yonge St., but this is a great one. The owners are wonderful and friendly. Coffee is as expected, awesome. The only draw back to this place is the size; you can't have a meeting or hang out in it. There are only two seats, so it makes it more of a take-out place. The pastries look to be made in-house and are delectable. I had the Latte and was not blown away, but was satisfied. For coffee lovers you will enjoy this place. For those that want a giant coffee, walk further south on Parliament and there are other establishments which may be what you are looking for. That's it! read more

Cafe Olya is a take-out cafe in Cabbagetown that provides your basic coffee drinks. There are no syrups/flavourings, no novelty drinks, and definitely no decaf coffee (sorry decaf fans!). They get their coffee beans from different roasters in Canada and the USA, which changes monthly. The cafe is run by a nice couple that make their pastries in-house fresh everyday. Usually the baked goods run out by the end of the day. Cafe Olya is not meant to be a place for you to sit down and get your work done. I was there to get the information for this review and I was out pretty quickly. This is a good spot for those who live in the neighbourhood and wants to pick up some fresh roasted coffee on the way to work or home. If you really love the coffee they are selling, they also deliver coffee beans right to your doorstep! Their coffee roaster is always changing so check out their website for which roaster they are selling for the month and details on the coffee delivery. read more

Great croissant. Crisp and extremely buttery. More buttery than I personally prefer, but hands down an amazing croissant.

I was just strolling home this morning when I noticed this little place. I can't believe I ever walked past this gem of Jamestown!! (Or old cabbage town, take your pick) now I do love me a good pastry. But this was beyond good. This was amazing. The brioche I had was delicate and fluffy without being too airy, and it's filling was some amazing cream that I am already craving more of!!! Go early. It's before noon and already there was only two pastries left. read more

Decided to give this place a shot, knowing that it had its work cut out for it with neighborhood favorite Jet Fuel just a few blocks down Parliament. Atmosphere was fantastic. Friendly owners and lots of parents with their kids playing around the shop. It was refreshing to be in a place with more character than your average twentysomething hipster (like myself) can provide. Coffee was great. Not as much umph as Jet Fuel, but still good. They definitely know how to make their coffee, maybe I will just ask for mine EXTRA strong next time. However, the crowning jewel of Olya cafe is their BAKED GOODS. My oh my. Absolutely mouthwatering baked perfection. Yumyum. I tried their dark chocolate scone and apricot jam cornetti. Wow! Still reeling from the amazingness of both. There are no words to describe how amazing the baked goods are. I fully, wholeheartedly, 100% support this place. Huge kudos to the baker, who I am sure has the power to sway nations with her recipes. I will be visiting again, many times, to get more of those baked goods. And maybe the coffee, just make it strong please :) read more

Most good coffee shops in this city have snobby owners who think that pouring a good cup of java requires some sort of attitude of eliteness ... you won't find this at Olya! The couple that runs the place is approachable, friendly and comes with knowledge about beans and coffee process ... it feels like a lovely neighbourhood addition, one that justifies visits from Queen and Coxwell. The baked goodies are delic! Always fresh, always something new and interesting and so yummy!!! Best of all, you know they are true coffee connoisseurs when they will gladly tell you about other great places to try java. That sorta confidence makes me happy to call myself a regular at Cafe Olya! read more

I love this place! The owners are so friendly and welcoming, the place smells divine (they bake all their treats in house) and the coffee is top notch. Their space is tiny but charming. As others have mentioned, once they are out of baked goods, they are out - no day-olds here. I've seen some people pretty upset to have missed the last croissant, but that's just another reason why the place is special. The coffee is a rotation from various roasters. I'm a fan of the Cafe Grumpy beans in particular. They are ready to talk about the roaster, tell you what's coming up next in rotation and generally share their excitement with you. Nothing pretentious here. Totally worth a visit. Or twenty. read more

Great take-out coffee without the attitude. Their espresso is carefully crafted and on par with the better places in the city. They bake their pastries in house literally in front of you while you order. I generally do not buy one with my coffee but when I do I am always satisfied. While there are a number of other indie coffee shops in the neighbourhood, none are producing coffee at this level. It's too bad they don't really have a place to sit! read more

It's probably too soon to give this place a 5, but I have only positive stuff to say. So I was in Cabbagetown for lunch and was ready to go down to the very loud place down the street to get a coffee on my way out. When I see this place across the street with someone just sitting in front of the window sipping in what looked like peace. I hesitate for a second and decide to give it a shot. I go in and it's small, a tidy counter with just the espresso machine. The guy is helpful in stating what their specialty is, helps me decide and here I am with a cup of cappuccino. I sip it and it's decadent. It's smooth and creamy, has a bit of bitterness for the espresso flavor. It evokes time and care put into this cup. I pay for it and notice the (shout out to) Indie Coffee Passport and mention I've been meaning to get one. They kindly offer to refund me cup if I decide to buy then and I did! Very friendly service. So why the 4? Well my experience was good there but i have not tried any of their foods or other drinks. I do think they could decorate a little bit more for some more personality. Next time I'll be sure to get a cup here so I can save my ears. read more

Obviously Tasso appeals to people so that's a great success story. However, I bought a bunch of croissants and Kouign Amann. I was really overwhelmed by how salty they were, particularly the Kouign Amann. I wondered if salted butter had been used by accident. They aren't cheap and I had to line up early in the morning to get them and my wife wasn't too pleased with the result. Maybe other people prefer this kind of saltiness? Maybe it was a one-off aberration? I've never had pastries so salty before. The upside of the experience was I researched recipes on the Internet, bought some unsalted high fat butter, and discovered making croissants and danish pastries is actually quite straightforward. Thanks to Tasso, I'm baking them at home at the cost of 50 cents to a buck a piece (depending on using grassfed cow or buffalo milk butter) and they taste amazing... they just don't look nearly as pretty (yet). So if you love the result, great. If not... try making them yourself. read more

indeed, very good flaky buttery and fresh made on the spot croissants. the choice of items is limited (4 to 6 bakeries) but you do not go there for multiple choices. staff / owners are friendly and professional and know their staff and job. in the top 5 of croissants in Toronto for sure. some days you may expect to line up for 20 minutes or come too late when they are out of stock. could be smaller lines up if they stopped selling coffee... to be more critical: very flaky and crunchy outside croissants, fluffy and buttery inside but maybe a little bit too heavy on the butter (i like buttery but 5% less might be enough... and would allow you to eat it while walking... for now, difficult to do as you would have extremely oily fingers then) and although it is light weight, it is surprisingly a little bit hard to pull apart. read more

A great stop in Cabbagetown. This teeny coffee shop is run by an adorable couple who appear to be the only staff. It's a great spot to stop for a coffee on your way to work. The beans are rotated among a number of independent North American roasters and the owners can always tell you lots about them. And every day there are fresh made incredible pastries baked right behind the counter. When you walk in you can usually see something being prepared. Seating just for 4 or so at stools against the window, so it isn't a camp out and write a novel cafe. Just a pop in, say hi, get some excellent espresso and phenomenal pastries and go on your way, kind of place. read more

smug and overrated....I have been a customer for going on two years and today was the last straw. Their web site states hours 9:00 AM until sold out. I'm familiar with this and understand. Today I arrive at 9:09 AM. They are sold-out of everything but croissants and pain au chocolat. I ask the owner, "how is it that you are sold out at 9:09 when you open at 9:00?" His response was over the top. I open when the product is ready, whenever that is and today it was 8:30. I mentioned that their website says 9:00. How am I to enjoy your product when I don't know when you open? He responds: I open when we are ready, if you don't like it don't come back. I assured him I would not be back. As I was leaving the store his wife shouts from the back, yeah, don't come back! I definitely won't go back. BTW, previous reviewers mentioned that some days they are over baked, today they were definitely over baked. This is a big city and there are plenty of places to buy amazing croissants, Bonjour Brioche on Queen for one has amazing croissants and bread and food. Oh, and great customer service. "Soup Nazi" was fictional, Tasso is not. read more

Slightly above mediocre croissants (i've tried better ones). I had a hard time finding this shop because of the lack of signage. I popped in here yesterday morning trying to wake up during a power walk, and am so glad that I did. As soon as I climbed up the stairs, the delicious aroma of beans and baked goods instantly filled my nostrils. A friendly woman and man were working there, and although I don't think there was really anywhere to sit down, it's a great pop-in shop for anyone on the go.
