I've lived in Orange since 1976, and the Tartan Room has become one of my absolute go‑to spots -- especially after a long day working as a realtor sponsor at a local car show. It's the perfect place to unwind with friends. Recently, my buddies ordered the beef stroganoff while I had my usual steak salad (which was spot‑on, as always). I tried a bite of their stroganoff and instantly knew I needed my own. The portion was huge, the flavor was incredible, and it completely exceeded expectations. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. The Tartan Room is exactly the kind of place locals like me keep coming back to. You can tell by the way the owner responds to reviews that he clearly doesn't take criticism well. Instead of addressing concerns professionally, he resorts to personal insults and low blows about people's appearance and financial situation just because they had an experience he doesn't want to own up to. The owner claimed we forgot our IDs, which isn't true. One of us simply left it in the car and went back to get it. He also claimed one of us was wearing a tank top, which was completely false. It was a regular short-sleeve shirt. Maybe the owner should learn what a tank top actually is before making assumptions and insulting customers. On top of that, making comments about people "living at home" and not being able to "afford sleeves" was immature, unnecessary, and honestly just embarrassing behavior from a business owner. The whole experience was strange and uncomfortable. Considering it was a weekend night and there were only about four people there, the place already looked like it was about to close down. Pleasantly surprised!! Super happy that I picked a local spot for dinner and we will absolutely be back. Love the old school vibe from growing up when times were more simple. Unwilling to accommodate a wheelchair ofter we went into the restaurant to let them know we had an ioth bday party of 7 with a wheelchair. Bar area doesn't not accommodate banquet area is where we needed to sit. We confirmed at the restaurant 90 minutes before arrival we get a call.... we have another party and only accommodate 5. My lady friend always raves about the Tartan Room. I looked and saw they had a Thanksgiving dinner for $65. She was happy and I made reservations. They had two seatings 1:00 to 3:00 or 3:30 to 5:30. We took the early seating. You had a choice of ham, turkey, salmon, prime rib, or ham and turkey. My lady chose ham and turkey; I went with prime rib. We got green beans, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, salad, and a dinner roll. I really love prime rib, and this didn't disappoint, it was amazing. I can't believe my lady friend has never had prime rib, she enjoyed the taste I gave her. Some people don't like rare meat, but prime rib should be rare to medium rare. The mashed potatoes were fresh and not from a box. You could see the small chunks of potato. The gravy was delicious. I loved the homemade stuffing. I always enjoy a nice dinner salad. I think my lady friend enjoyed her food too. She had a smile the whole time. Service was amazing. Everyone was so nice. Everyone wished all the customers a happy Thanksgiving. This was a two-hour seating, and we stayed almost the whole time. Nobody was rushed. It seemed like everyone had a good time. I can't wait to bring my lady friend back for a regular meal service. This place is really good. I went with Friends. This is the second time and we sat up at the bar. Nick, the bartender was wonderful. Definitely busy but checked on us often. drinks are a little strong for me but still very good. The ambience in there is dark and they have someone that comes in and sings so the music was really good. The food is a little pricey but everywhere is nowadays. $44 for a ribeye steak, dinner but it was excellent. Definitely go and I will be back again and again and again. read more

Kept hearing about this mom and pop place and finally went. We were pleasantly surprised! It's tucked away in a strip mall. With tartan plaid table cloths and an old school diner vibe, the food was great! We got their signature prime rib and lobster. While they used unsalted butter for the lobster, and the Aus jus was unflavored, nothing a little salt can't fix. The prime rib was cooked perfectly to medium rare. We shared this massive plate and they split it for us which was so fantastic! The salad was great with their homemade ranch. The service is so great, she was attentive and quick the entire night! The Tartan Room is kind of a hole in the wall restaurant/bar in north Orange. It has been around for a long time and feels a little dated, but it does have a certain charm. I have always sat in a booth in the main dining area, and I was surprised when a large group of family members were coming here to celebrate a birthday. I forgot that they have a separate room near the entrance that is all tables. They rearranged the room into one long table and we had our own private area which was great. The table started off with a few orders of the fried zucchini. It was breaded well and not greasy or oily. I almost always order the prime rib Texas style because this is the only place I've ever been that offers this preparation. It has a little dry rub on it, and is thrown on the grill for a bit. It doesn't make a huge difference, but it is a little twist on standard prime rib. The au jus was good and the horseradish is on the milder side. The veggies seemed fresh and not frozen. It also comes with a good sized house salad. Everybody else also enjoyed their food. I had a glass of the Bonanza by Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon which I would definitely NOT recommend. This must be the cab version of their Meiomi, a big fruit bomb that was barely drinkable. Service was excellent, especially for a large group. Our main server Terry was great, and several other staff members were constantly filling up waters, bringing food, and clearing plates. The food and service have always been good for me, and prices are very reasonable. This is a good casual place to grab a nice steak. Rating 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 for the excellent service our large group received on this visit. read more

I had my eye on this place for a long time because it's one of a few establishments that serve prime rib. The date of my visit was Saturday night 2/21/26 around 6:30pm. When my friend and I pulled up to the place he asked me if it was a dive bar. Because there were no windows and from the outside didn't look like a restaurant but a bar. As we walked in we were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere. It reminded me of a 80s Las Vegas Lounge There was an older gentleman providing entertainment by singing motown and oldies. He was actually pretty good we thought the live music brought out the place. There were customers on the floor dancing to the music. They seem to be regulars since they acted familiar with each other and the staff. I found the hostess station across the main dining room and was told it would be 45 min to an hour wait for a table for 2. The bartender came around and ask customers waiting for a table if they wanted drinks so we got a couple. It wasn't too long before the older blond hostess let us know a table was ready. During this time both her and the bartender were professional and polite. Once seated we approached by our waitress and were ready to order. My friend got the queen cut 12oz prime rib texas style. salad, bake potato. I got the King cut 16oz prime rib with lobster tail mp which was $80, tomato florentine soup, twice baked potato and veggies. We both requested med rare for our meat. Our sides came out promptly the soup, salad and complimentary bread. Then the main course. The meat was cooked to my liking, twice baked potato was good and veggies excellent. Overall the food, service, and atmosphere were good. Didn't get dessert this time but maybe next time. Would recommend. read more

Hello good people! Just a shout out to the Tatum room for a great tasting prime rib! For our first time we sat down ordered the customary beers (Stella) and some wine to ready the palate for that rare prime rib and let me tell You it was short of amazing! Tender warm and cooked to perfection! We started our adventure with some fried calamari and house salads....delicious! Followed by out main course, devoured the prime rib and finished off with some fried ice cream, great food in this little place plenty of alcohol choices to choose from and on the Saturday we visited they had live singing rod steward imitating singer that actually sounded really good! The vibe is lively with plenty of energy flow........we've been back 2 times since and plan on visiting even more! Cheers everyone! read more

I've not had a bad meal. Drinks are good except when I ask for Grey Goose I don't like seeing the bill reflect Popov or Kettle. The bartendress is a crap shoot depending on her mood...I am soft spoken... I don't like to hear employees/bartenders cuss! (I'm also of Irish decent/not shocked by language) The regulars are an amazing group of friendly folks, makes coming in a bit easier/more fun my group/posse lost interest in Tartan because of the music. The entertainment...ugh. Surely you can find better or are you paying $75.00 (?) and getting what you pay for? Garage band and karaoke singers. Not what customers want to hear in a famous steak house! At least one night have a professional singer entertain. You need to switch out and let newcomers sit in once in a while. I hear you're loyal to these musicians but that's not good business. Hostess Janie is awesome and obviously an experienced restaurateur and btw obviously highly experienced in customer service. My wife and I were looking forward to trying the Tartan Room for a long time. We finally made it there on a Tuesday night. We walked through the door and were looking directly into a large, empty dining room. That was confusing. Through a doorway we could see a dining room with people and a hostess. We walked through and greeted the hostess. We were ushered to a booth. Our drink order was taken by a friendly waitress. We were left to look at the menu for quite awhile before our order was taken. I ordered the calamari steak with onion rings. I chose the vegetable beef soup to accompany my meal. My wife got the petite filet mignon with twice baked potatoes also with the vegetable beef soup. The waitress dropped off a basket of soft bread. It did not seem fully baked? The soup came out shortly. The soup was very hearty. We were not able to finish the soup because it was spicy hot like it was over seasoned with pepper. It burned my mouth. Our food came out relatively quick. There were two calamari fillets accompanied by vegetables (broccoli, squash, green beans and carrots), and onion rings. There were three soufflé cups. One had butter and another might have been tartar sauce. I was not sure what the third was. The food overall was bland. The calamari had a slight garlic taste. I ate one of the calamari steaks. One was enough. I did not have any desire to take the left over one home. My wife's steak came out medium as requested. This was accompanied by vegetables similar to mine and her twice baked potato. The steak was ok. The potato was like mashed potatoes covered in cheese. The vegetables needed seasoning. The atmosphere seems like an old school steak house. There is a lot of dark paneling, low lighting and large comfortable booths. The noise level is a bit loud. There was a guy singing and accompanying himself on guitar. It was 1970s yacht rock. Popped for dinner. What a shock. Elvis impersonator trying to sing. I was alone so I sat in a side bar seat and ordered from a waitress. Had the small prime rib, baked potato and salad. The food was great. Pre.rib was perfect. Bread and salad were very nice as well. The staff extremely nice. I moved over to the acutal.bar when a seat came open, the walls mirror and short counter drove me nuts. Nick the bartender was awesome. Very much a locals hang. Dinner service starts at 5:00 and popped in the other night for an early dinner with a friend. I was starving so ordered a shrimp cocktail. The shrimp are the size of my palm, but cooked perfectly so they aren't tough as big shrimp can sometimes be. The cocktail sauce had chopped up celery and I'm just shameless enough that I dug in and ate that, too. They bring out a basket of complimentary bread & butter as well and that's always nice. The problem I have here is that so many things sound fantastic, but I keep ordering the same thing (Double Tornadoes or Beef Oscar) whenever I visit. One of these days I'll pop in for that shrimp avocado for lunch because it sounds incredible! And one of these days I'll stop in on a Wednesday afternoon to see what the chef has whipped up special for lunch. When my kids are with me, they order the Shrimp Pasta and they get 2-3 meals out of it! Back to my recent dinner, everything is always top notch at the Tartan Room. The restaurant is always clean, the service is always spectacular, and the food is always delicious. This particular night I ordered the Double Tornadoes, a baked potato with all the stuff, and a salad with bleu cheese dressing. I love their salad because they always include slice beets, sliced red onion, and cucumber. It's nicer than every dinner salad starter anywhere else. They have a good bleu cheese dressing, too. My potato was perfect and so fluffy with all the butter, sour cream, and green onions mixed in. You also have a choice of a twice baked potato and I think rice, too. My steak was just a tad underdone this time, but I ate it so wasn't really an issue. Medium rare is how I order and this is the first time ever that it's not been totally perfect and I've been coming here for a bit over twenty years now. Super great track record IMO! Here's something cool, too. We were wondering out loud what the prime rib boat is and a staff member who was passing by literally stopped to let us know! They have such awesome staff! After scarfing up the shrimp cocktail, my salad, and probably a third of my dinner, I was stuffed. They gave me a container and a bag to take it home. They have a full bar and their cocktails are always perfect! They have live entertainment most nights and it's such a great place to grab a drink and an excellent meal. They don't take reservations, but have never had to wait an excessive amount of time to get a table. One night a week they have a special fried chicken, Wednesdays at lunch they have a special that changes week to week, and they've been here for I think sixty+ years so you know they're doing it right! It's a little too far from home for me to be a regular otherwise, this would be my version of Cheers. read more

We ended up ordering a few more drinks and their steak dinner. The dinner comes with soup or salad. I got the clam chowder which was delicious and the steak was cooked precisely how I wanted it. The twice baked potato had plenty of flavor it had me wanting more. We also got to see a gentleman singing Elvis songs as well as other songs. Drinks, dinner, and a show. What more do you want? So we've been here 3 times now. The first was fantastic. Everything was cooked perfectly and our waitress was a hoot that just made us feel so welcomed. The second visit, everything was overcooked and the waitress was indifferent about our table. The third time I came in with a friend for happy hour and the waiter was great and the ribs were great for the price! The live music was a little loud but hey it's live music! All that to say.. it feels kind of like a crap shoot on the experience you're going to have when you walk in.. but perhaps that is part of the fun? Food must tries: the Texas prime rib. I have wanted to try the Tartan Room for a long time and my husband and I finally went for lunch a week ago. Based on reviews, we expected better food quality. Our meals were pretty disappointing. My husband had the fish and chips. The portion was small, the fish was sliced very thin and the breading was not tender or fluffy. Not at all like most fish and chips. I had the French dip sandwich. Again, the portion was small. The sandwich was small with a small portion of meat. But the worst part was the bread. VERY poor quality! It was basically the Wonder Bread version of French bread. Service was friendly and the ambiance very pleasant. I wish I had a better report, and I'll give it another try in hopes that we were just there on an off day. read more

First timers at the Tartan. Went for my wife's birthday (7/12) cuz she was aching for prime rib. They had good reviews so off we went. We went early and had drinks cuz the kitchen doesn't open til 5. Our waitress in the bar area said she'd been there 40 years!!! Service? Great. Ambience in the restaurant side? Great. Food? Prime rib was excellent. Zucchini appetizer? Wonderful. Lobster? Been a loyal patron for decades. Tonight was disappointing. Food was "OK", but service was horrible. Never had to ask for bread before, drinks were slow, and the worst part was the additional charge for ordering my drink on the rocks... really, a normal $12 drink, was $15? Do not recall this charge in the past. Always been happy with the food and service, but tonight something did not feel right. Asked for a manger upon leaving, and they never materialized. I'll be back, but was not happy with tonight's meal. Step up your game, please! Your concept and atmosphere is a dying breed, and you have a loyal following. Tartan has been a long time favorite. A combination of old school rat pack and divey modern vibes with remnants of the defunct Foxfire. Please don't roast me but I really dislike the bread change. Bread is a huge piece of happiness when dining out. It's our carb splurge and we want warm and delicious addicting bread (think Smokehouse in Burbank) They have never changed their bread and it's Disneyland in a basket! The bun on the burger has also changed. This makes me sad. Service is solid. Food is solid.
