MY FAVORITE CHIRASHI IN TOWN This is Taro's Fish's 2nd location. It's a "marketplace" setup with a wide selection of sashimi and other food items. It's for takeout only, thus you should go to their other locations if you'd prefer dine-in experience. I'm a regular and I typically get their customized chirashi (i.e. sashimi slices on a bowl of rice). I usually choose 3 kinds of sashimi on 2 bowls of rice. The price depends on the sashimi chosen and it's usually about $25-50/bowl - see a few samples below. The sashimi is of excellent quality at a competitive price. In addition to the typical ones (e.g. salmon, tuna, octopus, etc.), they also offer some seasonal choices too (e.g. sardine, firefly squid, etc.) Their service is amazing - friendly staff who are happy to help with my sashimi choices, and they always have a big smile too! Great selection of fresh and delicious tasting fish! Often come here to grab fish for DIY sushi at home. Taro's fish has a great selection of fresh slabs of fish for purchase based on weight. Once you grab all your items you'd like, feel free to bring it to the counter, they are happy to slice it for you at no charge! They slice it two ways, either sashimi style or poke style so make sure to let them know. I often grab salmon, hamachi, a box of Japanese uni, tuna, and mackerel. Salmon is always nice and fatty so it's a must get. Hamachi is nice and sweet. The Japanese uni is always fresh, sweet and creamy to the taste. Tuna is a must for any sushi dinner. Mackerel is also a great finishing touch to the meal. They also have frozen items such as scallops, edamame, other frozen fish. You can also find other Japanese staples like seaweed, wasabi, kewpie mayo, soy sauce etc. If you're not trying to buy slabs of fish to bring home, they also have a take out menu which you can purchase items a la carte. I love coming here for all things DIY sushi. Anything sushi/ Japanese related you can probably find here. Ordered the Premium Sushi Platter. Fresh, tasty, and nicely made. Being able to call their product premium, they are fully keeping up with their well-established standard. The ingredients they choose, the food freshness they offer, and the great attention to detail they put in each sushi are just pleasantly impressive. From the close-up photos, you will see how passionate Taro's chefs are about their work. Love the torched ones in particular. Love the balance between the charcoal aroma and the seafood freshness. It's really addictively delicious. Aside from sushi & sashimi dishes, they have all sorts of Japanese marinates, soya sauce, rice vinegar, mayo, frozen fish cake, frozen fish roe, you name it. I am so happy Taro's Fish opened a Markham location! I am a fan of their North York location and had been picking up their sashimi Platter for special occasions. The interior though small but well layered out. During Pandemic, there is a limit of 5 customers inside the store at one time. I went on a weekday afternoon so it was not an issue. Made to order, Prepared and Ready to eat sushi and sashimi. There are also Japanese grocery and sundries available. Absolutely love their sashimi Platter around $50 and their rolls are decent. Taro's Fish has been on my list for a while now and I'm glad I took the time to come here. The store is fairly small and has lots of ingredients that you can buy to make your own sushi. At the back of the store is where the sushi is prepared. I ordered a deluxe sushi set and also picked up a packaged chirashi. The sushi set takes 20 minutes to prepare, so order ahead if you don't want to wait. I was hoping to pick up some uni, but they didn't have any. The uni in the sushi set was replaced with salmon roe. The sushi set looked incredible. They did such a good job on presentation. The sushi pieces were fresh and flavorful. While I was disappointed that I didn't get to try the uni, I was surprised at how good the salmon roe tasted. It had the same flavor as crab. The chirashi was good too. Overall, I think the price of sushi at Taro's Fish is worth it and I'm looking forward to coming back. read more

I had done some research looking for fresh sashimi in the GTA and came across Taro's Fish. It's in such a decent location because at the strip mall off the 404 and major mac- it has ample parking. They had a wonderful system when you line up on the left to get in to place orders and on the right to pick up with a buzzer. We didn't have to wait long to place the order because they shoo you out of the store after your order is placed and they give you a buzzer. The selection of fish was amazing. They had quite a few all available to be sliced as sashimi or you could take them home and process them as you like. They had a great selection of toro including otoro, chutoro and bluefin tuna. It was so easy to pick 6-7 types of fish. By 4:30pm they were out of uni. Our selections cost around $200. We were there before the 5pm cutoff for sushi roll orders. We made our payments and had to wait for a bit walking around the strip mall. Once the buzzer went off, the staff literally was carrying our order at the door and we picked up with minimal contact in less than 2 mins. What an amazing experience! If you are looking for fresh sashimi or sushi, this is definitely the place. It's a small Japanese fish market/take-out store. We have been to their sheppard location but this is the first time at this location. We came here last Saturday around 4pm and there was a long line up outside. The store is really small so they are only letting about 7 people inside. Since it was late in the day and their last order is 5:30pm, we were limited to only ordering certain rolls. We were fine with that since there were still a good selection that we liked. Our favourite rolls were the Special Rainbow Roll and Spicy Salmon Roll...it's so good because it's so fresh. We also got a block of salmon and they will slice it up for you. Keep in mind that they accept credit card only and they are open only from Wed. to Sat. I know that I always say when I try new sushi places that this is my new go-to place but I'm pretty sure that this is the one! read more

Finally got a chance to try out the Markham location and it did not disappoint. I've been going to the North York location for years now and they've really held up their reputation of having quality fresh fish and sushi. I'm really glad they have a location much closer to me now. I ordered the chirashi($15)and deluxe roll($10) over the phone and was able to pick it up within half an hour. There's also an option to order online but you must place the order at least a day in advanced. You instantly taste the difference in quality compared to other local sushi restaurants. It's down to the fine details and preparation of things like their rice and wasabi which shines through. Amazing! Taro's Fish is a Japanese owned one-stop-shop for delectable sushi grade fish and Japanese treats! They recently opened a new takeout location in Markham (Major Mackenzie Drive and Woodbine Avenue) Their flagship location on Lesilie and Sheppard prepares all the take-out portions for Markham. You'll still have to travel to their main location for more fresh fish, prepared foods and Japanese groceries since the Markham location is solely for takeout and has less availability. Their new location features sashimi platters, chirashi, maki rolls, snacks, sauces, and some drinks. We arrived right before they opened and got two of the Charashi bowls and a slab of King Salmon. Taro's carries fish and seafood from all over the world and his skilled staff are happy to slice, debone or fillet your fish for you, free of charge (if you want). For $14.50/Chirashi, you get two pieces of pretty much everything from the store on a bed of flavored rice with nori and pickled vegetables. There was Tuna, Salmon, Red Snapper, White Meat Fish, Octopus, Cooked Shrimp, Tamago & Ikura on a basil leaf. It tasted fresh, delicious and super filling. The $18 King Salmon was also fresh from New Zealand and has a sumptuous melt-in-your-mouth texture Since this place is relatively new, people start lining up when it opens! They are OPEN for Walk-ins from Wednesday to Saturday during Noon to 6PM (last call 5:00PM). They also have extra precautionary measures that are being taken against COVID 19: Limit 6 people in store at a time and you're required to sanitize prior to entering. read more

You can also make your own sashimi plates by choosing the filet and seafood in the fridge. You can also find Japanese roll cake, Mochi, snacks and drink, special soya sauce, wasabi, seaweed. 2022 update - Still great fish selection, and an awesome experience. For special occasions I stop by this place to grab some sashimi - usually bluefin tuna, salmon and whatever else floats my boat. I always opt for the option to have the fish sliced into pieces, at which point you will get a buzzer as it takes around 10 minutes to have completed. It is like a mini market that is a one stop shop for all your fish cravings. The location is super convenient with plenty of parking around. I usually stick to only getting sashimi here for value, however they do have other options such as rolls and party trays if you like. They also offer pre-made rolls, chirashi bowls and other dishes for people looking to grab some quick foods along with some Japanese snacks, mochi and cooking ingredients. The only down side is their fish slices are medium sized, so I feel like you can get less different variety of sashimi ie) hard to just get a few slices of everything. A pro-tip is to check their hours, to keep their fish fresh they're not open every day and on the days they are open, they usually open only noon until 6 pm! My new go-to place for fresh sashimi. I used to go to the one in North York but I'm so glad they have a Markham location now. The quality of the fish is good and prices are reasonable. The selection varies depending on the availability of certain types of fish but I find it's usually a large enough variety to get a few things. They slice the sashimi for you at your request, and you can buy sushi rice and seaweed separately to make your own rolls. I recommend the sashimi over the other sushi rolls and chirashi bowls which I feel are not as good value. read more

I only recently became acquainted with Taro's fish but my boyfriend and his family have been to the location in J-town/North York for the past 10-15 years!! You mean to say that's 15 years that I've been missing out on this deliciousness??? Taro's fish specializes in high grade fish and seafood products. It's definitely a little pricier than your standard sushi shop but you get what you pay for. What we normally do when we come here is we order their fresh sashimi grade fish by the freezer section and get the staff to slice it for us so we can make DIY hand rolls at home. They also have a wide selection of party trays and maki/sushi rolls to choose from but the fish tastes the most fresh when we're eating it by itself. Pictured below is our large tray of sashimi which was worth every penny. We got the salmon, tuna, blue fin toro, fluke, hamachi, mackerel and surf clam. Each piece was SO thick and fresh. The star of the show was the blue fin toro ($42) - super fatty, buttery and melt in your mouth. I had to stop myself from eating too many pieces because I wanted to preserve its delicate taste. The hamachi and fluke were also incredible. If you haven't tried Taro's fish, put them at the top of your list!! Taro's Fish opened up in Markham about 1.5 months ago. It is located in the plaza close to Starbucks and Harvey's near Major Mackenzie & Hwy 404, but in the strip mall northwest of those establishments. I was impressed with how clean this place is. They had a giant container of wipes for hand sanitizing prior to entering the store. Masks are required and they limit the numbers of customers in the store to ensure physical distancing. Many other fish and sushi establishments have some kind of fishy odour but this place not only offers the freshest of fish, but their store smells fresh. Taro's Fish is really more of a takeout establishment. Taro's sells a number of Japanese products but specialize in fresh seafood and fish. They have some prepared maki sets, chirashi bowls, and assorted sashimi sets to choose from. If you're craving for specific types of sashimi, you can select portions of fresh fish by weight and request for these to be sliced for no additional charge. We selected a chirashi bowl ($14.50) as well as portions of bluefin tuna, King salmon, sweet shrimp, and scallops to enjoy at home. After paying for our purchases ($77 taxes included), we were asked to wait in our car and the staff brought our completed order to us about 5-10 minutes later. Our food was packaged with bags of ice to help keep our fish cool during the transport home. We enjoyed the chirashi for lunch. We appreciated the freshness and variety of the fish and the seasoned rice. The chirashi bowl was not the most generous portion I've ever enjoyed but was still was good value for what we paid. We devoured the rest of the sashimi for dinner. I enjoyed in particular the sweet shrimp and scallops, and the butteriness of the King salmon. Surprisingly the bluefin tuna was my least favourite, and mainly because it had the most fishy flavour of the fish we were eating. Overall we were so satisfied with the quality and flavour of the seafood, and it brought back memories from our trip to Tokyo Fish Market. Advanced orders can be made, and in fact are required for certain orders like party trays. Larger party trays such as their family party tray ($75 for 44 pieces of nigiri and California and spicy salmon maki) need to be ordered 1 day in advance. They are only accepting cashless payment at this time. I've heard so many good things about the original Taro's Fish location in North York but never had the chance to go. Thankfully they've opened a location closer to home which means I now have a go-to restaurant for fresh sushi and sashimi. Highly recommended! read more

It's smaller in size but has so many options for you to pick from. I came here (lined up outside) on my birthday with my boyfriend to order a platter but they were too busy to accept new orders. Our fault for not ordering ahead but we ended up grabbing a few slabs of fish and some rolls. When we went to pay, they offered to cut our sashimi for us which was amazing! They told us to wait in the car and brought us our sashimi to the car! That's customer service. They wrapped up the sashimi on a foam platter on top of a bag of ice. This is their second location (first location in North York on Sheppard). It's a much smaller shop, a pick up and go type deal. They have freshly packed sashimi you can pick up with a good variety. You can also order rolls and nigiri at the back of the shop and pay for it at the front. Due to COVID, they take down your name and plate number and have it brought out to your car while you wait there. I really appreciate how they have a tub of disinfecting wipes for you to use before you enter. Ordered 4 different rolls with an order of uni nigiri. * Spider roll * Deluxe spicy roll * Spicy scallop roll * Otoro roll And an order of uni nigiri. The sashimi was fresh and didn't have that "fishy" taste. They also don't skimp out on the uni in each piece of nigiri. Loved how they load up on the "stuffing" and not so much with the rice. My biggest pet peeve is when the rolls break apart when you pick it up, but these were rolled up quite well :) Only down side is that it's quite expensive. About $57 for everything mentioned above. DO NOT GET THE SOFT SHELL CRAB ROLL - their soft shell crab roll was the worst I've ever had. The tempura batter on the crab was pale, soggy, almost like it was uncooked - it had zero crisp. $15 completely down the drain. Sushi platter for two was otherwise quite nice - double the price for a place like Hug Sushi but quality is nicer (although probably not double the quality). I wanted to update my previous review by adding a picture from the sushi we picked up today. Once again we placed our order well ahead of the 6 pm close. My order was prepared in Under 20 mins and the person that handed the takeout bag to me was very pleasant and personable. These guys work really hard starting their day at 6 am to be able to open at 12, but the hard work shows in the quality of fish that you get. Thoroughly enjoyed the fresh rolls and fresh sashimi. I especially loved the chopped scallop rolls as it actually tasted like scallops and not fishy at all. Order ahead and you will be set. Definitely a new gem in Markham! read more
