We visited Tarara Winery recently - for a friend's birthday celebration. It's been a long time since I visited Tarara - but this is about the 4th time I've visited over the years. I was surprised to discover that somehow I never wrote up a review of the place. First of all - the drive in is gorgeous. It was a rainy day, but that made the greens in the foliage - all the more luscious and colorful! We were shown to a private room for the birthday wine tasting. The two guys from Tarara - Alec - and I cannot remember the other's name - were fun and engaging. We tasted approximately 9 wines as I recall - I enjoyed most of them. Well crafted and executed! I try not to be a wine snob, but I know what I like. I've been there twice, thinking that the wine had to get better, but alas... The staff is wonderful.They deserve better wine to peddle. The grounds are lovely. They have a lot of concerts and events there. Since I haven't attended, I won't speak on those. The wine club would be a great deal if I could find something that I liked enough to buy a case. But wait! There is a glimmer of hope when I taste the wine under their Killer Cluster wine label. The Syrah is wonderful. Unfortunately, since the wine is made from off site (Washington) grapes, my purchase of a case doesn't count toward the Wine Club. Too bad, they may have had a return customer in me. I guess that I'll keep looking. Go for the events, go for the atmosphere, but bring wine with you. read more

We stopped here for a tasting, the wine and environment was great! Our winemaster was very friendly. We did the 9-wine tasting, and received a discount on a purchase. I would highly recommend coming back when the weather us warm, as the scenery is beautiful. Online, the website advertises food, however, we were a bit disappointed to find that they only had cheese/crackers and light refreshments. Other than that, our experience was excellent! read more

We didn't have a set plan for our Saturday Virginia wine "tour" and decided on Tarara very last minute. It was about an hour and half drive from Baltimore County. So not bad at all. We arrived just as they opened and surprisingly stumbled into a Penny wine tasting which they offer on Saturdays (score!). Because it was so early, we were the first guests. Danielle was great. Very friendly and knowledgeable. The wines are a little pricey but very nice! I loved the 2017 Boneyard Little Bones... The description is Elegant, sweet and frisky... Yep that's me lol. But back to the wines. A couple of my companions prefer sweet and super sweet wines. They didn't find anything that they liked. But Danielle did suggest a couple of nearby wineries which offered sweeter choices. On the day we visited there was a crab feast planned for later that day. And looking at the calendar, they do host other social events throughout the year. I have to imagine that it looks gorgeous in the Fall. Can't wait to return! read more

I went the first time for the Legwarmer's. What a mistake this was. I read a lot of the reviews before I went and have to say the 1 star reviews are the most accurate. The Legwarmer's are a great band and they put on an excellent show and the crowd was really into it with a lot of people dancing & singing along. It really creates a very fun atmosphere. What is not fun is waiting in line for 30 minutes for some wine. I went to two different stations and it was the same experience. I think the strategy is to get people here early and buy multiple bottles. It's the only thing that makes any sense. Otherwise why would they be so understaffed at every station on what is probably the single biggest night of their season? If you read through the one and two star reviews it is the same complaint over and over for an extended period of years. They can afford to pay help, especially on a big night like the Legwarmer's. The one station I went to the credit card machine was out and people were starting to get very upset. Fortunately I had cash so I was able to make the transaction. The wine isn't that great to begin with, I had the red blend and the Nevah red...just OK. It's also deceptive to list a Leesburg address when this place is actually in Lockets,Va. read more

Made the mistake of coming out to the wineries on Memorial Day weekend= traffic from hell, so I might have not been in my normal zen mindspace when usually visiting a winery. This place was interesting? The only way I can describe it was a bad fever dream. The layout is disorienting and windy with tons of little rooms and weird side decks. It tends to feel dated. This would have all been fine if the wine was good. I'm not in anyway a knowledgeable wine drinker, but these wines tended to taste a little cheap. I got a tasting for $15 dollars and the workers were all friendly and knowledgeable. I went to sit by the lake/pond situation, which was lined by an assortment of food trucks and hard games, but also overrun with ants and bugs. Granted, I understand we were outside and bugs come with the territory, but it was baddddd, especially since the best part of a winery is enjoying the outdoor view with some good vino. On a positive note, the outdoor live music was lovely, and I've heard great things about their summer concert series. Very nice 500 acre property in Lucketts, VA. This is also where the DC Wine Country Divas half marathon was held and will be held again this year in September 2017, which I am a member of! This visit, we chose 6 varietals from their 3-tier collection: 1-Tarara Voignier - was very good and light- nedoum bodied white 2-Boneyard Voignier- was okay not as creamy 3- gewurtzrraminer - this one was very fruity and that persimmon flavor was distinctly noticeable after taste 4- Cab Franc - light- medium body tanin was light and peppery 5-Nievah blend of cab sav syrah and merlot 6-Pinnacle cab franc The wines were good but the property was spectacular! They hold summer concerts of local bands and touring bands who cover dave matthews and other contemporary rock to alternative music. We will definitely come for the summer concerts. The property is also equipped for lakeside pavilion weddings and parties. The property was large and offer several type of venues including half marathon for several hundreds to thousands attendees. Regular tasting menu: 2 stars Reserve wines (if you can get them): 4 stars Service: 3.5 stars Venue: 4 stars Bottom line: Come here for an event, or maybe if you feel like spending $20 for a Reserve tasting, but probably skip it if you're only doing the regular tasting menu. Tarara has more land than any other winery I've seen in NOVA, and it's hard not to appreciate the drive thru the lush grounds to the tasting room. The tasting room is nicely appointed, although I take points off for not allowing people to bring their own food to the patio. With 50 acres under vine (including some off-site vineyards) they have more grapes than most places; I always give kudos to places that are mostly estate grown (in fact they used to sell grapes). Wines: At $10 for 6 wines, you don't get a lot for what you pay for - and the glass is extra. I wasn't a fan of the whites: the best of the bunch was the Cheval (blend of several white grapes, buttery on the nose but not the palate), but I didn't especially care for the Boneyard White blend of the Chardonnay...or the Rose for that matter. The reds were a little better. I liked the complexity of the Nevaeh Red 2012 Merlot blend, but at $44 it was expensive. I also had a taste of the (non-tasting menu) $45 Tranquility, which was a Cab Sav/Tannat blend, which I though was excellent. The other red on the tasting menu was the Killer Cluster, which was an odd blend of several grapes I've seldom seen blended together. Service: Mixed reviews. To be fair, I came before a concert, so they were packed and understaffed. When I did get service, my pourer was excellent - and bonus points for offering to let me sample the Tranquility, even though it is typically on their Reserve list. I might give it a try again, if only to sample their Reserve list. Based on what little I saw I suspect there are some gems here. And I do recommend visiting them for an outdoor concert. But I wish I got more out of my $10. read more

I had a great time at Tarara! We came around lunch time on a Sunday and it was the most perfect weather to enjoy their grounds. There are a ton of trails and walking paths, complete with woods and a gorgeous lake. It would be a great place to have an event. They also have live music on their deck! As for the wines, we had a gift certificate for a free tasting. I think that entitled us to taste 9 wines but we ended up getting 12 thanks to our amazing tasting associate! She was really knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the wines and it made it a really enjoyable experience. I went home with a bottle of the 2015 Long Bomb, which was one of my many favorites from the tasting. I also really liked the 2015 Viognier, The Killer Cluster (grapes from Washington state!), the 2017 Rose and the 2015 Tranquility. We also got to try the Neveah Red (their award winner) from 2013, 2014 and 2015, which was fun to try side by side. Overall a great experience and I'd be happy to come back read more

My friends and I had such a great time here on a Saturday morning. We decided to do a winery tour and Tarara was our very first stop! Between 11-12pm, they do Penny tasting!!!!!! We were literally digging for pennies on our drive to the winery, haha! When we got there, they asked if it was our first time, then they also offered us another tasting voucher for us to bring our friends back next time! What a great start already :) The tasting room is set up nicely with menu and glasses all around the bar. April, our server, greeted us right away. There were different group tastings were going on at simultaneously around the bar. We did the 9 tasting and we enjoyed most of it. Some of their wine have unique tasting note, for example: the select bin #7 was very soft and buttery. The Tarara Rose doesn't taste like your traditional rose. It's less sparkling. We enjoyed our tasting a lot. April was fun and entertaining. She's very knowledgeable of the winery and the wine they made. After our tasting, we also took a walk around the winery. when we were leaving, they were about to start live music right outside of the tasting room. This place is huge and you can bring your own snacks and picnic food if you like to do a picnic near the lake. We will definitely be returning anytime soon! read more

Tarara has a lot of land and it's very pretty, but they definitely need better signage. The tasting room is deep within the property, and the signs are tiny. The wines were okay; I really only liked the Social Secret Red, but that's personal preference. The tasting room is nicely decorated and there's usually plenty of space at the bar, but it can get crowded on weekends. Apparently children are not allowed on the outside patio, so people end up bringing them inside. I like kids, but having them be loud and sit on random places on the floor (ew) doesn't really make for a nice ambiance. Also, there weren't enough employees working the tasting room on a Saturday. They were super busy and did the best they could with a lot of visitors, but they really need to ramp up staffing. read more

My friend and I went to Tarara to see a Billy Joel cover band, The Turnstiles. I was hoping that it would be like the world famous Catalina Island Wine Festival but alas it was not. Beautiful property with a mini amphitheater in the woods. The grounds had a small lake and large, lighted parking lot. There were 2 food trucks and an ice cream truck. Definitely less people than we expected for our $25 + fees ticket. Lots of private tents and pavilions. And, wine, maybe?? No!! They only sell bottles of wine. No samples, tastings, or glasses. My friend and I drove in a motor vehicle on winding country roads for over 50 miles. We didn't want a bottle. We wanted to split a single glass. We were willing to pay $10 per glass. NOT OFFERED. To add injury to insult, the bottles of (Virginia) wine were $30-75! Do they not understand the profit margin on glasses of alcohol? Tarara that is really irresponsible. Sell single portions. So, I went to a vineyard, didn't see the estate, and had no wine. Turnstiles was fabulous. They rocked. Sound system was good. My only complaint about the band is that they took requests. So, the drunks in the crowd starting yelling 'Leningrad,' 'Stormfront,' 'Downeaster Alexa.' Yeah, the last song is a real pick me up! So, I can't say that I'll go back to Tarara. They didn't have glasses of wine for sale and completely overserved the people who were there. read more

Although i love the winery, this is for the Crab Feast on July 14. THIS WAS AWESOME. Big changes from last year with all sorts of hand washing stations, excellent seat options, drink tickets, full buffet with yummy corn and biscuits, lemonade, iced tea, craft beer for beer lovers, corn hole, non smelly portojohns, keep your wine glasses, wonderful care and happy friendly customer service. It's a great value, lots of fun and the crabs are sweet and delicious. 2 minor "complaints" would be the acoustic music didn't happen because his speaker blew (bummer - But I'll bring bluetooth speaker for the table next year just in case) and the fried chicken was a little dry. On a recent trip to Loudoun County, I'm sad to say my visit to Tarara was the low point of my day. We chose to do the regular tasting, not the premiere, since we were trying to visit several wineries in one day. As we walked up to the winery, it looked promising. Big barrels, a pretty patio, lots of people hanging out. The tasting room was a real letdown, though. First, you walk into a kind of dark, basement like space and pay for your tasting. Then you are corralled over to one of two understaffed tasting bars. The staff members are trying to serve a ton of people at once, so you have to wait a loooong time between pours, and what pours you do get are done quickly with a short memorized speech that's quickly recited before they rush off to pour wine for someone else. On our visit, we happened to be a couple groups down from someone who was launching some sort of VA wine iphone app, so we got extra bad service while the pourer doted on this other person and passed our their business cards for them. I'm not going to comment too much on the actual wines, as I feel like I had kind of a sour taste in my mouth and probably didn't give them a fair shake. My friend bought a bottle of Charval. I was considering buying a bottle of Long Bomb, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it after the bad service I received. None of the wines blew me away, that's for sure. I really wanted to like Tarara as I met the winemaker at the Virginia Wine Expo and he seemed like a cool guy, but it just wasn't there. I've been told not to pass a final judgment until I try the premiere tasting, which is apparently a better experience, but I was so soured on this visit that it will be hard to convince myself to go back. read more

I forget that farmland is not too far off from DC. Wineries do exist in our area! I attended Tarara's Blackberry Days Wine Festival in early August. Yes, it was a bit of a drive but it was worth it. $15 included admission and wine tasting. For $5 more, you can try the reserve tasting as well. Many vendors were selling food, crafts, and other products. I grabbed a chicken kabob with rice. We also came home with some yummy cheese spread from a stand selling Country Pride Cheese House. Now for the tastings... it was incredibly busy for the festival so they had a large tent set up where tastings occurred. We squished in to claim a spot for the regular tasting. I found them all pretty mediocre. We gave our taste buds a little break and then came back for the reserve tastings. I highly recommend paying the extra $5 to try these. We came away with the Viognier, a delicious white wine I had never tried before. The scenery is just lovely (see pics). Wish we had put some chairs or a blanket in the car, but we found shady spots to sit. Many people chose to buy a bottle of wine and walk around enjoying it on the property. The blackberries were abundant and I couldn't help but sneak a few before going home to washing them. read more

It's not Napa but pretty good for NOVA. I'd walk 10000 miles to get here! Lol! The staff are friendly and they have lots of parking and check out the tastings. They have put a lot of thought into this place. This fall i plan on doing a kayak trip and wine tasting with concert! That's how great it is. Here's the secret to a great tasting... Show up before noon. Sure that's not the best time to start drinking... or, is it? At Tarara it meas you get lots of attention *and* the tasting only costs $0.01. That's one cent, 1/100th of a dollar. Better still, they don't go out of their way to collect even that. Our Wineista, April, was happy to discuss the wines at length, along with giving us a tour of the main house and a description of the property and it's history (including where the name came from). It made for a more than averagely enjoyable experience. As for the wines, they ran the range for two to almost four stars. There was one five-star wine but it was only available in case quantities and my girlfriend said I didn't need it. She was, of course, correct but it was still a very good wine. read more

I had a great time visiting this winery for a tasting. Located just north of Leesburg in Luckett's, the winery is situated on a large plot of land with nice views of the woods, fields, pond and some walking trails (although I did not venture very far). We parked and went to the cellar inside. We found a spot along the bar where we wer givene a menu of 9-11 red, white and rose wines. The woman leading the tasting was knowledgeable about each wine, the year, awards won while also sharing her own preferences. She also gave us bottles of water which was needed after so many tastings. Having never done a true tasting before, I had a great time assessing each wine side by side and learning some of the terminology and descriptions. I definetly have a abetter sense of what I like! She even offered us additional tastings beyond the menu for a more complete set. My favorite was the 2015 white wine and rose surprisingly. Despite not knowing much about wine, I had a good time and my friend left with a bottle! The bottles were priced 20 and up with some significantly cheaper as they were discontinued. While they often used Virginia grown grapes, some wines were from Washington state among others. Would like to return to thus winery and others in the area! I went to the winery on Saturday and while the wines are good and the ambiance is fine, the patio is filled with insects. I was bit by a bee on the patio - there are a lot of bees there and while I like the insects, I think the winery should do a better job keeping them away from the people. I am now dealing with allergic reaction, doctors and medicine. The winery recorded the incident and even kindly gave me a Benydril to "ease the pain," but no one bothered to give me a call to see how I was feeling... That seems wrong and careless. If you are going there, especially with children, stay inside or beware of bees. read more

I LOVE wine and really love my California and Oregon wine but this has been my first experience trying out Virginia wine. Last year, one of my family members had mentioned she loved this wine and since the holidays were coming up, I thought i check this place out to stack up on some good wines for the upcoming family holiday gatherings. The estate is beautiful, especially during the fall. I was able to hang out by the lake there and took wonderful pictures of my son with the beautiful changing leaves in the background. I went on a Tuesday afternoon so the crowd was minimal. The featured tasting is $10. They give six small samples of their featured wines. I didn't care for the white wines they offered. The cabarnet frac is fairly descent but the 2007 long bomb wine was good. Was not a big fan of the 2009 limited long bomb wine but ended up getting that too since they give a 10% discount if you buy three. The wines are about $20 and up, which I think it's kind of expensive for the wine you get. It's no California Wine country experience but at least I can say I tried it once. At least I got to enjoy the scenery at the winery. read more

Stunning property, they must have spent millions upon millions on the building alone. Could be the only winery with a view of another state... The wines however... 'Our wines are so good that we had to outsource production to stay in business' Otherwise known as they are a glorified liquor store! You go wine tasting to taste wines grown there. Not wines that come from Washington State etc. If I wanted to taste to best wines Washington State has to offer I'd go to a tasting at my local liquor store.... This winery was recommended to me by my boss. My girlfriend and I visited this sprawling estate on a rainy Saturday during Labor Day weekend. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Special thanks to our hostess, April -- she was charming, personable, and had extensive knowledge about the product. When we come back, we're asking for her. Everyone has their own preference when it comes to wine; and I am certainly no expert when it comes to the subject. But out of the nine we tried, the two standouts for me were the Viognier and the Chardonnay. We did not join the Vine Club... this time. But if we lived locally, I wouldn't have hesitated. We purchased a bottle of the Tranquility 2013, which was another of our tasting favorites. You can't beat the value. I think we paid $15 to taste nine wines, and the pours were very generous. We loved our visit to Tarara Winery this afternoon! Penny tastings (read: complementary tastings) before noon on Sunday was the way to go, and our wine expert April was incredible. Our nine-wine tasting turned into more than a dozen pours, and we really got to taste the variety that Tarara has to offer. If you're reading this review July 2018, Tarara might still be selling cases of their Killer Cluster brand, which is being discontinued, for ultra-discounted prices. After becoming Vine Club members, we walked away with a case of Killer Cluster's Albarino (delicious!) for only $86. April took us on a tour of some of the property, but it's clear that there's much more to explore here, and we'll be back soon to do so! read more

I'm only giving a three star not because my experience was bad, but it's lacking some of the internal atmosphere experience (indoor restrooms and indoor wine tasting option) that other vineyards in the area offer. The property itself is beautiful! I do love their barnyard white! I recommend! read more
