We almost didn't end up coming in since the parking lot was empty and the sign in the window said closed- even though the open flag was out and the website said they should be open. But we decided to give it a try anyway, and were glad we did. We ended up having the whole tasting room to ourselves, and the sommelier was very friendly and knowledgeable. (Also the sign on the window just hadn't been flipped!) Corcoran seems to specialize in ciders more than wines. We went with a flight of the ciders- some of the flavors were a little odd tasting especially the Knot Head . The Sinful is one of my favorites though, having had it at 1836 before. The overall selection is pretty small so there isn't much to come back for unless you want to purchase more of their options. read more

I finally got around to visiting Corcoran Vineyards! It's been on my "to try" list for a long time! I started off with tasting all of their hard ciders: "Popo Peach" Hard Cider (6.0% ABV) "Hop & Pop" Hard Cider (5.5% ABV) "Knot Head" Hard Cider (6.0% ABV) "Sinful" Hard Cider (6.0% ABV) I enjoyed all of them! Then on to the wines. I tasted about half of what was available that day: April Wine 2012 Chardonnay 2011 Seyval Blanc 2011 Cabernet Franc 2009 Cabernet Franc 2012 Pinot Noir I was not impressed with any of the wines I tried - which was disappointing. A winery & a cidery on the same property (although in two different buildings). They have a lot of desert wines that are infused with berries, which I liked & found to be different. I'm not a huge cider guy, but I did really like one of my four servings. The winery: with a tiny historic farm house made into tasting room, Corcoran had a nice rustic vibe. My $10 tasting included 6 wines. My server was kind enough to serve me even though I came right before closing, and gave me a bonus tasting of her own favorite, the Blackjack. Their pooch wasn't around today; normally he comes right up to me to play fetch. Yes dog lovers, this is a very dog friendly place - including the tasting room! Whites: The 2011 Reisling and the 2012 steel-made Chardonnay were just OK; I can't remember anything distinctive about them. They also had an Apple wine, which I didn't like. Reds: I liked the 2011 Tannat a lot; very nice cherry palate. The 2008 Cab Franc was more light bodied than I'm used to, but wasn't bad. Desert: Great selection of desert wines! The 2010 Raz Merlot had raspberry notes and was wonderful. The 2012 Blackjack was a red blend with blackberries and came off like grape juice for adults; my pourer joked she nips it for breakfast and is always sad when she has to sell the diminishing stock (actually I don't think she was joking - I totally see that). While not on this tasting, in the past I LOVED the Cello, which was a lemony wine. Cider: 4 tastings for $7. They cidery is a new-ish addition. But the only one I really took to was the Sinful Cider, which was a bit spicy. read more

Corcoran Vineyards was number 2 on our vineyard hopping list today! We had actually been here before, but this time, I had my eye on the cider flight! Selection - 5 They have 3 different tastings available - cider, wine, and dessert wine. Their dessert wines are amaaaaazing. They're very unique and fruity. The lemoncello is delicious! They keep recommending I try it over ice cream - so you should too! The ciders weren't my favorite, but were definitely unique. You get a lot in each pour! They were extremely carbonated, which was a little too much for me, but the packaging was adorable. Our server, Rachel, said that the owner's niece drew them all - she also drew the tree on the front of the barn! I enjoyed the spicy "Sinful" one the most from the ciders. They are currently only selling this one by the bottle in January and February, just fyi. Atmosphere - 3 While I really enjoyed the ample seating and fun little games, the interior of the tasting room leaves something to be desired. It's not very aesthetically appealing - very plain and just reminds me of a standard barn with a bar in it. Though the outdoor area is beautiful during the summer! But the overall vibe is extremely friendly and welcoming. Wine Presentation - 5+ Rachel, our server was fantastic. It's like we were old friends catching up over some wine and cider. She was extremely personable and knowledgeable about each thing we tried. Love you, girl! I want to come back here in the summer when they have their BBQ going and just hang out outside in the sun! Great service. Small, at least the cider part. There's a small driveway and the building is hard to find, but nice and relaxing. They had four ciders--all very good. It was OK. The place is kind of far but the view is pretty cool. They are pet friendly which is a HUGE plus for me. We did the flight of tasting but they use these plastic cups which to me is kind of lame. The inside could use some renovation...seems pretty dirty and it's a small place. Out of the four different cider, we only liked the two. The knoxfort which had a hint of bourbon and vanilla was not impressive. At least my bf didn't care for it and he's a bourbon guru. There's a peach flavor cider we tried and I didn't like it, tastes nothing like peach...just gross. But hey, at least their original is pretty decent. read more

I wanted to leave a review that specifically addressed their social distancing / COVID-19 safety practices for customers. I think that they did a great job. While there, I observed the following: -staff who dealt with customers wore masks; those who did not were far away from customers and didn't interact with them (like 50-100 feet away) -staff disinfected tables and chairs between customers -customers were socially distanced (10'-20' feet apart from one another) -nobody petted anyone else's dog -for payment, we used squarespace. The staff did not touch our credit card, and we did not touch the device. We just inserted the card. We did have to sign for the receipt though. It was a beautiful Saturday morning in the DMV and we decided after hitting up one of the Christmas Markets to take a little drive out to Corcoran. I'd seen the signs for years, but never actually ventured there. I'm so glad we did. The owner and her assistant were super nice and friendly. We decided to do the dessert wine and the cider tastings. My friend wasn't originally going to do the cider one, so we did the dessert wines first so neither of us would be watching the other imbibe (which definitely changed the palate reaction to the ciders, but I digress). I really enjoyed all of the dessert wines. My favorites were the Raz and the USB; the RAZ was definitely bursting with raspberries and the USB is like a smooth port. The ciders all tasted the same to me, due to my palate being overrun by the dessert wines, but they seemed clean and fresh. I will have to go back to try again to update. It's a beautiful little vineyard hidden neatly in the countryside. It was super cozy on a snowy winter day and can imagine that it's a fun place to be in the Summer with the BBQ going. read more

I tried the cider flight, which allowed me to try all four ciders. They were all very different and a Wide range of flavor and carbonation (bubbles). I wish they gave you all four in a glass & a tray so you could take it outside and enjoy it with the BBQ because after having the 4 glasses on an empty stomach that was about enough for me. I liked the flavor of the first & last cider on the list (sorry don't remember the names), but the last one had a lot of carbonation. There was one that had hops, so if you're a beer drinker I think you would like that one & it would go well with the BBQ. The lady/owner was really nice and provided a lot of information on the wines and cider. It was really nice inside & provided a comfortable place to sit and enjoy. My only suggestion is make the samples/flights so you can enjoy them with the BBQ outside. read more

Hard place to find as the signage is not that great. However, it is well worth the journey to find this place. It's located in a residential neighborhood consisting of much land and beautiful homes. Beautiful setup on Loudon County going on here. Barrel aged cider was pretty solid. Good place to spend a Sunday afternoon. Owner was very friendly and willing to allow patrons to sample before purchase. With so many nearby vineyards, Corcoran sets itself with their delicious ciders. read more

Corcoran Vineyards - Dry cider with cinnamon - Wineries Near Me - Waterford, Virginia

First things first: Corcoran's setting is weird. It looks like it's been plopped amidst an urban housing development (more likely, the development grew up around the property -- the tasting room is a restored 18th century log cabin). But it's easy to overlook the few cookie-cutter houses when you pull up and see the acres upon acres of grapevines and the charming little tasting room. The tasting room is small, but there wasn't a crowd at all when we arrived around lunch time. The tasting fee is $7 (about average), but moms -- my Moms included -- received a free tasting in honor of Mother's Day, a much appreciated and lovely little touch. Our fee covered six, well-executed wines, starting with a 2010 Apple Wine made from local apples. It was tart, off-dry, and refreshing. This was followed by a 2010 Rosé blend of 90% Chambourcin, 10% Cabernet Franc. Fermented in the traditional French way, this Rosé has no residual sugar -- unusual for this variety (I happen to like Rosés and particularly enjoyed Corcoran's; Moms has been looking for one she doesn't object to, and this one was it so she snapped up a bottle.) The reds included a berry-nosed, mellow 2010 Amber Creek Chambourcin; a 2007 lightly tannic Benevino Cabernet Franc; and a 2011 BlackJack, Tannat/Chambourcin grapes fermented with blackberries. This was accompanied by bits of dark chocolate in order to compare the before-and-after flavor profiles. Last on the list was the 2010 USB -- a "Port-style" (hence the moniker USB, get it? get it?) Chambourcin dessert wine aged 12 months in whiskey barrels. I don't normally like sweet wines, but this USB was absolutely delish and Pops -- a die-hard sippin' liquor man -- went gaga, adding a bottle to Moms' running Rosé tab. On top of the excellent wines, we received an attentive, engaging, and informative tasting in the cozy and quaint main room of the cabin. Not to mention chocolate, one of the taster's home-baked brownies made with USB, and husband's favorite tasting accompaniment of all time, O.T.C. Wine Crackers. I'd added Corcoran Vineyards to our Mother's Day Wine-tinerary as an afterthought, but ended up enjoying our time here more than the other vineyards we visited that day. I loved the farm like setting of Corcoran Vineyards with the outdoor tables sitting along a lake. There's a nice big tree that provides some good shade where you can take a break from the heat as you enjoy your wine or snacks. We arrived at Corcoran early, but seeing as this was the final day of their Groupon offering, the tiny little tasting room was packed to the rafters. We ended up waiting over an hour for our tasting but the kind staff offered up some homemade white sangria to hold us over. The Sangria wasn't really sangria and had the taste of bad fermented fruit which made it completely unappealing. Despite the bad sangria, the staff was apologetic and reassured their waiting customers that they were not forgotten. Our turn to the table finally came and we popped up to the bar to enjoy the wine. Again the staff was very kind and helpful in explaining their different wines especially on a madhouse crazy day like today. The wines were okay and we ended up picking up a bottle of their Viognier. Post wine tasting, we were exhausted from standing for so long and ended up sitting along the edge of the lake enjoying our cheese and crackers. Jumping back into the minivan we waved goodbye to Corcoran and started the journey to our next vineyard. Will we return to Corcoran? Probably not but if you do go the staff are very nice people who have the patience of angels in dealing with a mad rush of "Grouponites". :-) read more

We went here to try the ciders. When we got there we were a little hesitant because it's little place down a long gravel driveway and practically in a backyard. Don't let that deter you!! We loved it here! The owner is extremely nice and does everything herself. She actually acknowledged everyone and gave every group attention (unlike some larger wineries). We tried the cider tasting. It was all really good but what stood out was the port wine. Oh my word!!! Absolutely amazing!! She said she is known for it, which makes complete sense. It is a little pricey but well worth it. We ended up buying a bottle of each of her ports. We brought it to a family get together and people who don't even like port ended up liking it. I honestly think Corcoran has a wonderful thing going for them - a unique mix of offerings all on one property: white wine, red wine, dessert wine, and cider. However, the space is terribly small and oddly laid out, and the wines weren't memorable after leaving. Four of us came here recently, and it was crowded! So we tried to make some space for ourselves to the side, but it was almost impossible to get the wine pourer's attention. We were facing a refrigerator of wines, and we were squished at the end of the counter. Our backs were toward the main part of the room. It was frustrating because it took a bit of time to find the woman behind the bar, get her attention, and explain to her what we were looking to order. And with it being so crowded, we felt bad for the one person to take care of everyone. Because she was alone, we weren't able to make conversation, ask questions, joke around - it was a very professional, quick, and curt experience. The drinks were also only fine. Nothing really stood out, but I guess the Raz dessert wine was good. The tasting amounts were pretty generous; I'd rather them be smaller because they were a lot to finish when we weren't really fans. There wasn't a throwaway bucket. Bottom line: the impersonal service, which could have been atypical, was disappointing. The beverages' tastes were only okay, and the tasting room was tighter than a can full of sardines. read more

I would say this was the best winery on our little tour. The cider tasting was done by a very friendly & chatty hostess, who sweet talked me in trying the ciders. She also poured me an extra tasting & slipped me her phone number;) Their was only one home made cider. It was a good one, but there is a promise of four more this fall. The wine tasting was a crowded affair, little A/C but the company of our fellow tasters made up for the crowded conditions. Tips on where to go to taste the samplings of distilleries was greatly received by me. The wine was good or so the rather merry spouse let me me know:) Got a few bottles... Will be back to check out the beers which a fellow taster told me were well worth it! Ohh I forgot to mention... Skip this one. The wine tasting house looked run down and the floor is not level--you'll find your self standing at an angle and it won't be because you've had too much wine. Their wine--don't try the sangria, I took one sip and poured it out. The rest of their wines were slightly better than their sangria. They do have a great brewery though, so go their instead. When we went they also had a great local barbecue outside so the trip wasn't a total waste. They also have a cupcake and wine tasting, which is a cute idea but you need good wine and good cupcakes first. read more

Jeez! I haven't had a bad winery experience in awhile. Corcoran ended that streak. It was Halloween and I came in with 2 of my girlfriends. We were there for a cider tasting. Right off the bat, the property was gorgeous outside. Also, they had someone making pulled chicken and it smelled like HEAVEN! Unfortunately, it was hell when we stepped inside the tasting room. The room is small and couldn't very comfortably accommodate everyone that was in there. I wasn't too worried about that though, because folks at wineries are typically pretty cool and respectful. We bellied up to the bar and let the woman in the red witch hat know that we were there for the cider. She got out 3 glasses and poured the first tasting of cider. She didn't say much about it, just referred us to the tasting sheet. Fine. We can read. The first cider was on point. It was crisp and not sweet. The tasting room was filling up. If we thought it was hellish before, it was worse now! A bus group came in and the organizer let our pourer know that they had a group of 19. The pourer looked annoyed. Like this was an inconvenience to her. Me and my two friends all noticed how unwelcoming she was. Anyhoo, we sipped rather leisurely because the woman pouring disappeared. Like, she was nowhere to be found. When she did pop back up, she quickly poured the next glass and ran away again. The ciders were ok, overall, but the service and the ambiance left something to be desired. I want to come back though. Give them a second chance to show that they aren't schmucks. read more

Another great winery that is off the beaten path. The tasting room is small, but quaint. It's a very old home and has lots of character. Our pourer also happened to be the owner and we very much enjoyed talking to her as we tasted. I wouldn't bring big groups here. It just doesn't have the spaced to make it enjoyable. Very small and crowded with malfunctioning air conditioning (the one window unit we saw was blowing out HOT air, not cold). Tastings are $7 for white OR red, $12 for both, which I found a bit overpriced compared to some of the other wineries in the area. Their whites are very sweet, which might be just your thing! This review is for the new brewery (opened early August 2011) AND the winery. They both get four stars, so I combined them! The brewery currently offers 6 beers: Wheatland, P'ville Pale, Catoctin Ale LoCo IPA, Corkys Irish Red, and Slainte Stout. The Stout is not typical...the "coffee" taste isn't too strong, and I actually might be able to drink more than one in a night! The staff is very friendly, too. The winery is just a stone's throw from the brewery, in an old house by a pond. They have barbecue every weekend, which is delicious! You also get to try 12 wines for $12 if you choose the red and white flights combined. They have a great sparkling wine and a port-style (called USB) that is aged in whiskey barrels! a must-try! I only knocked them down one star because the winery tasting room was extremely crowded on both weekends we went. I really think they should do more to accomodate the large crowds, although the historic home is beautiful. I've had the pleasure of visiting Corcoran Vineyards a number of times and enjoyed all three of their offerings: wine, beer and cider. Over these visits, their layout has changed a bit -- mainly the building where the beer was served is now devoted to their cider; the beer is apparently a few miles up the road. Honestly, it's been a while since I tasted their wine, and I vaguely remember feeling somewhat "meh" about it. However, their cider and beer is where it's at. This last visit this past Saturday, I enjoyed an outing at Corcoran with some friends for a cider tasting. The place was packed and there were only two people attending to the customers. Honestly I've never seen the place so wall-to-wall and ill-equipped to handle the volume. We waited quite some time to be served, and we had managed to grab a place at the bar. Tastings were $7 for four; however, they were out of a couple of their offerings and, so, technically, we only got three tastings. We ended up getting a re-taste of something for the 4th tasting, but typically, most establishments let you re-taste any of the offerings for free. My feeling is, if they were out of stuff and you technically weren't getting four different tastings, they should have reflected that on the menu (and the price). Still, our server was very nice, and my friends and I enjoyed a bottle out on the patio. Also, I really appreciate that Corcoran is dog friendly. They allow dogs in the tasting room. Also, they usually have a BBQ restaurant on site serving up lunch. They weren't set up this past Saturday, so it might be a good idea to call ahead and see if they are serving, in case you were hoping to grab some food. This is a great one. First of all, it's not just a winery, they have a brewery onsite as well. I normally split my time between the winery and brewery when I go. The owner Jim is a super nice guy, spends a lot of time with his guests, and is just all around hospitable. The tasting room is a little small, so if you can try to avoid peak times. The cab franc is pretty solid, as well as the USB and Blackjack dessert wines (they are pretty sweet though), and I liked the apple as well. While it doesn't have the scenery of say Bluemont, it's a very pretty spot with a pond. If you go in the fall, make sure to taste the pumpkin beer. I think last year it was called Padawan Pumpkin. Corcoran is hands down our favorite winery. Our first trip there was after a disastrous tasting at Tarara. We put wineries into the GPS and suddenly we found ourselves in the midst of our a neighborhood - weird setting. The tasting room is a little small but the wines and people pouring are always fabulous! I love the whites and dessert wines! White: viognier, apple wine, traminette, and riesling. The stand outs were the apple wine and riesling. Dessert: Cello, USB (love the name - it's their port), RAZ, and BlackJack. My favorites are the RAZ and USB. My husband's favorite is USB. If we aren't looking for a new place to try, then we head out to Corcoran. read more

Corcoran was my least favorite spot on a five-stop wine tour, but it had some tough competitors. The tasting room is very small. Luckily, a large group had just left and there was plenty of room; if that had not been the case, things would have been a bit uncomfortable. I felt like we got the short end of the stick when it came to the tasting -- several of their wines were out, so we basically got an apple wine, a white, two reds and four dessert wines. I don't like fruit wines, and I'm not a huge fan sweet wines or dessert wines. Someone who does might have loved this! The tasting guide was nice but a bit rushed. It seemed like a get in, get out type of place, and that's what we did. I don't plan on making another stop here on future trips. I wouldn't recommend it as a must-visit. read more

We visited this little tasting room on a cold winter day. The tasting room had no heat on, believe or not. I didn't mind that too much except that their wines were also at room temperature i.e. ICE COLD! I tried warming up the glass by my hands so I could get some sense of what their wines tasted like, but it didn't work. All I learned was that ice-cold red wines all taste the same. There were only two women conducting wine tastings and of the 8 people at counter, they seemed to be struggling with the small groups they were tending to and if they were flustered, they definitely showed it. We paid for our tastings and glass and hoped for better at the brewery. Verdit: Of all the VA vineyards I have visited, Corcoran is probably my least favorite. No hard feelings, the available wines I tasted were just not my taste and while some people would find "charm" in the tasting room, I was uncomfortably hot, crowded, and wanted to get out as soon as possible. Jim Corcoran is the funniest man I've met in a long time. I've been to his vineyard several times. I thought it was really nice. The barbecue is DELICIOUS!!!! It was soooo good. I definitely think it's some place my family will come back to. Hopefully I will bring my friends one day. Wasn't really a fan of the cider though but thats ok. It was a little too fizzy for me, it kind of took away from the taste for me. Otherwise it was great. The staff was really nice. read more

What a gem! We got the cider wine combo flight & I can honestly say I liked every single one we tried! I haven't been to say that about any other winery I've been to. The owner is a great host & knows her stuff. Loved how quaint & relaxed this place is. We came home w/the mulled wine package (awesome deal)& a bottle of red. We will be back! read more
