For the past two weekends, I have been visiting my newborn nephew and family in Modesto. The day my nephew was born my family ordered dinner from here. This is another place on "the Modesto to-eat" list! Mostly because Mexican restaurants in Florida are nothing like this; no where near this authentic. We placed a large take out orders (10+) entrees and it was ready to pick up in about 20 minutes. Yet wouldn't you know, all those entrees and we were given 2 very small bags of chips. Psh! There's no flour chips at this location either; a delicacy we don't have in FL and I very much enjoy to munch on while I'm out here. There's a "salsa" bar which had 2 variations of red sauce, which neither of them my sister or I cared for, 2 variations of cabbage (another thing FL doesn't do), limes, jalapeños, and other things. No salsa verde was out so we had to ask for it. My sister loves loves loves Horchata and it's not bad; best described as a liquid churro and kind of makes me want a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal! We ordered flautas (or maybe they were taquitos?) for the toddler and they came covered in guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, cheese....not what we were expecting! Corn tortillas filled with shredded chicken - I'm not a good judge on the taste. Anything that has a corn tortilla automatically makes me hate the flavor. Now, I know retried beans are pinto beans, but they're usually brown in color. Maybe this means they're Americanized? Anyway, this bean & cheese burrito was huge yet seemed to be mostly rolled tortilla, some beans, and little cheese. And the beans were an orange'ish color, which I think are pinto, but do have a different flavor. I prefer Taco Bell's over this bean & cheese burrito. The carne asada tacos are a go to for me; beef, onions, cilantro and for an up charge, cheese. The tacos are served on corn tortillas - I hate hate hate corn tortillas - so I either 1) eat it sans tortilla or 2) heat up a flour tortilla at my sisters and fill that. They're pretty good! The meat I and last night was about 25% unable-to-chew. Not fatty, but tough in a way no amount of grinding would I have been able to break it up. Thankfully we were at home so I could spit it out! Tortas....why don't we have these in FL? A Mexican sandwich - mine was carne asada, lettuce, and pico de gallo. Pretty sure sour cream too! I think these things are awesome - tough I had a better one in Tracy, CA at a taqueria there. End Result: it's authentic and much better Mexican food than you'll get on the East Coast! I'm new to the Modesto area so I'm not sure if this is location is related to the one in Riverbank, but the one on Patterson in Riverbank is way, way better than this location. I came in last night and the lady taking the order was rude, but more importantly the food was just alright. I ordered my daughter and horchata and it had a weird taste to it, like the machine needed to be cleaned so I threw it out. It had a gross after taste. The burritos had more rice and beans than meat and I agree, the pastor was a little on the burnt side. We tried this location because it was closer to where we were at the moment, but I regret not driving the extra distance to the Riverbank location. So this review is specifically for calling ahead and ordering. I called ahead last night to order dinner for my Husband and I. He ordered a Super Carne Asada Burrito and I ordered the shredded chicken Torta. When I arrived it was ready. When I got home I saw that they only put one bag a chips.. That's odd there was two orders. When we go to La Parilla they give us a bag of chips for each order and already have your salsa in your bag for you. Anyways.. besides the chips my Torta was all soggy, the bread was all soggy around the edges. Usually when I order a Torta somewhere else they toast their bread so this doesn't happen. Other than it being soggy it was good. My husband loved his burrito. I usually get a burrito too, but I wanted to switch it up. Bummed I did. Really guys!!! I ordered tacos carne-asada. I did not ordder tacos-onions/cilantros. This restaurant has really turned out bad. Did they change kitchen crews? Even the friendly cashiers are gone and replaced with this not so friendly/great girl that receives orders. After increasing your menu prices 2X in a year (because of covid), you are now charging for salsa dip?!!! Might as well charge for the corn chips as well. Visited this place several times including the location on Prescott. thought it was pretty good and had given it good reviews until the last visit. The order was wrong and when I informed them, they told me I'd have to pay for it again if I wanted it right. My wife has certain food allergies which can make this a more serious issue. Left the food on the table and ended up giving a $35. gift to the most unworthy of thieves. I don't know why it is that Modesto has so many jerks running and working in businesses. Took a chance on this place after visiting from Fresno and was disappointed. I ordered the Platillo de Pollo (chicken plate) and a coke for $17 total (pretty pricey for the poor quality). It seems like the cooks are lazy. The rice is not real rice, it's instant rice. The beans are definitely canned not homemade (you can tell by the reddish orange color). The chicken was just okay. The chips taste stale and they aren't homemade either... just store bought. Worst of all the salsa was not good... probably store bought too. Normally when I spend this much on a meal and have a bunch left over I will ask for a to go box because I don't like wasting food or money, so you know it's pretty bad when I decided just to leave the food behind. The place itself is quaint and cute and has a lot of potential. I hope the owners see this and made some changes! My family and I have been going here religiously for over 6 years now, I grew up with the grandson of the owner so of course it was the only Mexican place we'd go. After the uncomfortable and frankly embarrassing ass experience I had there today none of us are ever going to eat here again. I placed a $35 doordash pickup order here but when I came at the exact pickup time to get it one of the newer girls at the register couldn't find the order. I've worked in food before and I get that sometimes orders get misplaced or given to the wrong person, so I wasn't upset at all. After talking to another worker she told me they needed to put the order up now because it hadn't gotten made. Totally fine, I went to my car and waited 15 minutes. Came back in and this new chick looks at me like I'm some asshole criminal and tells me some man already came to get my order so "I should stop trying to scam her." I hate confrontation and I just tried to show her the doordash screen and explain there's now way anyone I know did that, and that it must've been a mistake and she hits me with "then how did they give me the doordash name". Wtf I have no clue, probably because that didn't happen. People mishear names all the time and I get that but when you want to turn it into me trying to steal a whole second order of the same Mexican food ima write a nasty yelp review. Like damn the fact that you're gonna accuse me of stealing an order of Mexican food from my childhood friends restaurant really ticked me off. On top of all that they still "remade" the order I guess and after accusing me of lying and me just awkwardly standing there for a minute with no clue what to do she hand me bags of food. Their burritos are the best! I always order the super carnitas burrito, and it never fails. It's big, and only around $6. The carnitas are always fresh, and cooked right. I don't know what makes their burrito so good, I have been to many taquerias and ordered the same thing, but they never taste as good as San Jose Taqueria. I don't know too much about the other food because I can't get away from their super burrito, but I have never heard any complaints. I really miss this place. I recently moved to San Jose, and living on the East Side there are a ton of taquerias, but I cannot find a burrito like theirs. Next time I am in town I am heading straight there. read more

The food is meh, overly greasy (like oil oozing out of the foil of my al pastor burrito), and soggy (the chicken burrito was soggy to the point it fell apart half way through). The size is of the super burrito is normal for the price, $6.49, but for the taste, I'll pass. I ordered the carne asada regular nachos as well; it came with a lot of meat (pro) but the cheese was melted to the bottom of the container, not even on the chips. This used to be one of my haunts but the past few experiences have left me a little despaired. Last time I went, me and my brother spent more time alternately of me picking the cartilage out of my chicken burrito and him pulling hunks of fat off the beef in his taco then we did eating and enjoying. It's interesting that people preparing food never stop for a minute and contemplate "Hey, somebody might be eating this, so maybe I'd better not let these chicken bones slip by" but to each his own. I know that the cooks are more occupied with trying to set land speed records in getting food to the customer - you can order and literally not even have sat down yet and your food will be brought to you - then paying attention to the little details. I used to like eating here because even though the food did not have a lot of flair or flavor, it was solid and dependable. The salsa has never been a strong point, it's like red water with a few vegetables thrown in and the chips are store bought. *Addendum*: I forgot to mention the clerk who always talked about Scarface when she saw my Johnny Thunders shirt (well he does sorta - in a long distant cousin way - resemble Pacino) and how her mom tore the posters down from her bedroom.
